ABC Debate moderator Lindsey Davis just LET THE TRUTH SLIP OUT!
What’s Trending: Donald Trump did not have a great performance at the debate last night. The ABC moderators David Muir and Lindsey Davis were also incredibly biased. The Harris campaign has challenged Trump to a second debate. // Despite already being way over budget, King County Councilmember Girmay Zahilay is proposing a new $1 billion affordable housing plan. A Seattle resident broke into song at a City Council meeting. // New Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol has introduced his new plan to turn the company around.
Trump takes on Kamala Harris…and David Muir…and Lindsey Davis in the most rigged debate in American history; Harris wins on points, but does it really change the race? Join Jim and Greg as they dissect Tuesday night's presidential debate and how everyone on that stage was underwhelming in their performances - from Kamala Harris dodging or lying on the hard questions to Donald Trump missing opportunities and getting easily distracted to the moderators playing favorites. They also update yesterday's Taylor Swift story and reflect on 23 years since the horrific 9/11 terrorist attacks.First, they break down Kamala's performance, particularly how she refused to answer challenging questions about the Biden-Harris record on the economy, the border, and her many sudden policy changes. They also note specific areas where she tried to sneak to the right of Trump and her clear strategy of baiting Trump away from discussing the issues most damaging to her.Next, they explain how Trump kept falling for the rabbit trails offered by Harris, his failure to highlight some of the most devastating aspects of the Biden-Harris record, misstating other attempts to land punches, and how he looked generally unprepared for the event. They also highlight a few of his zingers against Harris and Biden, but even those turned out to be missed opportunities. Then, they evaluate ABC News moderators David Muir and Lindsey Davis for their one-sided, questionable fact-checking and for offering some real softball questions to Harris. Finally, Jim and Greg share their thoughts as the nation solemnly marks the 23rd anniversary of the 9/11 Al Qaeda terrorist attacks against New York City, the Pentagon, and Flight 93 in Pennsylvania. Please visit our great sponsors:Lumenhttps://lumen.me/3MLHead to lumen.me/3ML for 15% off your Lumen.

Leslie Lindsey Davis lost 100 pounds. And she did it by putting a stake in the ground and deciding to become healthy in three ways: Physically, Emotionally, and Mentally. In today's episode she shares ways for all of us to fuel our journey to lose weight by filling the the self-sized hole that we may have in our lives.Takeaways:1. A lot of times when we are starting a journey to discover or better ourselves, we find that there is a self-sized hole in our hearts that we are desperate to fill with food or some other vice.2. It's usually pretty apparent to yourself when you are unhealthy, but you may not be sure about how to go about getting healthy - mentally, physically and emotionally. You just have to start small in each of these areas. 3. Put your stake in the ground - know that you NEED to change and then control what you can control. 4. The brain likes hits of endorphins, good or bad, so pay yourself with good words and behaviors. Be aware of what you are saying to yourself and make it good, instead of bad. 5. There aren't any bad choices. There are not so good choices, good choices, and great choices. 6. There are no CHEAT days or CHEAT meals. Think about the words you are saying because they have deep meaning on how we think. You can only cheat on taxes, test, and on your spouse. Everything else is a choice. 7. Little lies we tell ourselves: If you eat a broken cookie there are no calories. If you eat off someone else's plate it doesn't count. The thing you realize is that the only person you are lying to is yourself. The outside world can see the evidence of you lie.8. When you begin the journey of finding yourself pack your bag with things that will help you. Create a relationship with yourself though journaling because when you can see the words on paper and can reread them, you can do something with it. 9. When you having a bad day and want to sabotage your journey, stop and ask yourself what is really going on. 10. Take progress photos of yourself on the journey - because our brains are trained to keep a picture of us and what we looked like at the beginning. Throughout these progress photos, not only will you see progress in your health, but in your mental and emotional lightness as well. 11. Get rid of clothes that don't fit anymore. Don't hang onto them because they mentally give you permission to go backward. Those clothes are reminder of who you uCome talk to me here:Find me on my Website:https://www.lesleylmcshane.comFREE: Midlife in Motion ROADMAP - with $50 Off Midlife In Motion Program COUPONhttps://midlife-in-motion-roadmap.gr8.com/I want more details on the MIDLIFE IN MOTION program:https://lesleylmcshane.com/courseI don't need details, I want IN in the MIDLIFE IN MOTION program:https://lesleylmcshanellc.thrivecart.com/midlife-in-motion/Schedule a Kickstarter Call to get your nutrition and fitness on track!https://lesleylmcshane.com/book-a-callConnect with me on Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/lesleylmcshane/Get Redesigning Midlife Weekly Updates:https://RedesigningMidlifeWeeklyUpdate.gr8.com/Find your community at the private Redesigning Midlife Facebook Group:https://www.facebook.com/groups/redesigningmidlife/You Deserve It Notebook:...

The next witty must-listen book in the Flavia Albia series. Rome, the very end of December. The Field of Mars is packed with monuments, none more beautiful than Domitian's new Odeon and Stadium. But the area has been overtaken by ugly events: elaborately staged murders. Someone bears a spectacular grudge against the theatrical community and intends to get revenge in the most spectacular way possible. The killer's method is to re-enact bloody scenes from the gruesome side of popular theatre, where characters in plays really die on stage. A figure from the past wants Flavia Albia's father to investigate, but Falco is out of Rome for the holidays. Albia seizes the commission. And begins to regret doing so almost immediately. 'The undertaker did it!' the first victim croaks before expiring. This seems to make no sense, because surely people are already dead when they go to their funeral? Though there is a serial killer at large, the authorities would prefer a cover-up, but Albia is driven to discover what is going on. How much blood must be shed before the mania ends? And could her own family be on the list for a frightful stage death?
Bestselling author Lindsey Davis speaks to her long-time editor Oliver Johnson about DESPERATE UNDERTAKING, the 10th Flavia Albia mystery and the 30th in the extended series that began with the first Marcus Didius Falco mystery which was published in 1989.

Those clothes are reminder of who you used to be. They don't serve you anymore. 12. A journey is a ME thing, not a WE thing. But you need a team - A person that will support you no matter what and be non-judgmental. And then find someone who can help you with your exercise and fitness.13. Learn to be inefficient - for example, when loading in your groceries, take only two bags at a time and make more trips. Meet yourself where you are. When body image issues and limiting beliefs stem from childhood, it can be so difficult to be content with your adult body. Contentment comes not just from healing these traumas, it also comes from removing triggers from your daily life. Dr. Sarah Stierman talks about how she broke up with the scale and feels good at her new stronger and smaller, though heavier, size. How to Break Up with the Scale Put your scale in another room (or remove it from the house) Determine your body type Work out and eat to support your body type List your evidence of non-scale related success (photos, measurements, how you feel) About Dr. Sarah Stierman Dr. Sarah Stierman is a board-certified Dermatologist and Dermatopathologist in private practice in NW Ohio. She co-owns her practice of 12 providers (including her husband of 18 years) and 65+ employees. Dr. Sarah Stierman enjoys treating patients of all ages with medical, surgical, and cosmetic concerns. She especially enjoys helping adult women achieve optimal skin health through science-based skincare and procedures. She is a mother of two school-aged children, and a pet mom to 17 (dogs, cats, chickens, and one fish at last count). Sarah actively participates in local community theatre, vocal performance music, and is an avid supporter of the Arts. In her spare time, she works on her Overwhelm, lifts heavy things, enjoys vegetarian cooking, and tries to catch up on her sleep. ...the Work never ends! Healing Limiting Body Beliefs It’s unfortunate, but so many of us develop body image issues in our childhood. Whether this stems from traumatic events perpetrated by family members, like what happened to Dr. Sarah Stierman, or societal pressure, these events trigger limiting beliefs about our body. Sarah explains how she was always bigger than her friends. She now understands she has a different body type - a mesomorphic body - that is naturally bigger. This body type also gains muscle much easier than other body types. When Sarah accepted that she couldn’t change her body type, she learned to embrace it. This meant she started understanding how to fuel it and what exercise feels good. Breaking Up with the Scale Sarah had to check her perfectionist ways at the door. She chose to reframe and embrace her mesomorph body for what it can actually do - not what she wanted it to do. She realized it wasn’t going to be perfect, but it was her body. Part of Sarah’s monumental journey to self-acceptance was breaking up with the scale. It’s not an easy decision to make, especially when you’ve been a slave to it all your life. Sarah physically removed it from her life, but mentally it was much harder. Any time Sarah feels doubt and like she needs to check on the scale, she instead writes lists of all the non-scale victories she’s achieved. Muscle weighs more than fat is a mantra we can all live by. Homework for Women Physicians Have you split up with your scale yet? If you haven’t, I want you to start the process. Move your scale out of its normal home and go a week without stepping on it. A week is easy? Try a month. Let me know in the comments on the episode page how you get on. In This Episode How our childhood can create limiting beliefs about our bodies [7:30] What happens when you accept that you can’t change your body type [14:00] How to embrace imperfection [17:15] How to break up with the scale [19:30] Why the Transform program is different from other transformation programs [26:30] Quotes “It’s just phenomenal how stifling it was and created my limiting beliefs. I know my metabolism is not broken based on my results with Transform. It’s just amazing how easy it is to derail yourself. You’re the only one standing in the way of yourself.” [9:23] “I’m a chronic over-achiever so I guess I’m just going to have to reframe and embrace my body for what it actually can do. It’s amazing when you actually are able to harness your own potential.” [15:18] “I have done strength training body transformation programs before. I hurt myself. I injured my back and injured my elbow, I had tendonitis. I felt so betrayed by my own body and felt that nothing works. When I show myself that I can be strong and I can make gains, my body just shuts down and betrays me. Transform felt easy because I can gain muscle so easily, but it also felt good. It didn’t feel like I was punishing myself. It didn’t feel like I was going to hurt myself. The biggest shift, this time around, is breaking up with the scale for good. It’s over.” [26:16] Resources Mentioned Check out the full episode page here Find Life Coaching for Women Physicians Online Follow Dr. Ali Novitsky on Facebook | Instagram Subscribe to Life Coaching for Women Physicians on Apple Podcasts Podcast production by the team at Counterweight Creative Related Episodes Episode 50: Dr. Lindsey Davis on Overcoming Limiting Beliefs Episode 54: Dr. Monica Milas on Transformation Through 100 lb Weight Loss Episode 53: Dr. Harita Raja on Mind-Body Transformation

It’s so easy to let yourself become less important during catastrophic events. But as Dr. Katie Jobbins talks about, if you’re not looking after yourself, you won’t have the long-term capacity to care for others. Self-care is important, especially through a pandemic. Key Takeaways You can be okay with where you are and enjoy it Let whatever you’re focusing on go and move on Find movement you love and want to do About Dr. Katie Jobbins Katie Jobbins, DO, MS, FACP is a primary care internist at High Street Health Center Adult, an academic hospitalist at Baystate Medical Center, and Associate Program in the Internal Medicine Department at UMMS-Baystate in Springfield, MA. She then completed 3 years of Internal Medicine and stayed on to be Chief Residents in 2015-2016 at Baystate Medical Center. In her current role as Associate Program Director in the MMS-Baystate Department of Internal Medicine, Dr. Jobbins serves as a clinician-educator working with residents in both the inpatient and ambulatory setting. She recently won one of the AMA Inspiration Awards for her work in medical education. Prioritizing Yourself During a Pandemic When this pandemic hit, Dr. Katie Jobbins found herself falling back into old habits where she didn’t prioritize her own health. Despite previously going to therapy and private programs, it wasn’t until she joined a group program that Katie felt she had the tools and accountability to make lasting changes. The pandemic has impacted all of us in one way or another, and for so many of us, it’s been detrimental to how we take care of ourselves. Katie explains why it was essential for her to find time for herself. Katie shares some of the ways she started prioritizing herself throughout the last year. It doesn’t matter that there’s a pandemic going on - it shouldn’t change the way you care for yourself. Creating Space for Yourself Every Day Katies says you need to make sure you’re doing something for yourself every single day - and notice when and what this is. It’s not only about doing something for yourself. The act of recognizing that you’re putting yourself first has a positive impact on your overall health, too. Katie shares some ideas for how to look for and create space in your life. Can you go for a walk during your lunch break? Take advantage of what space you already have in your schedule. Finally, Katie talks about how she started enjoying exercise and movement. It’s so different to approach movement and wellness from a place of love and joy than from a space of necessity. This change of mindset is so valuable. Homework for Women Physicians How do you create space in your day that’s just for you? If you haven’t done this - or haven’t done it sustainably - this is your permission slip to start finding space. Let me know in the comments on the episode page. In This Episode Why group coaching programs have a different impact than private programs or even therapy [8:00] Why you need to make time for yourself, even when you don’t feel like you have it [10:30] How to put yourself first, even during a pandemic [13:00] Why you should recognize what you’re doing for yourself [14:30] How to look for and create space in your life [18:45] How to have a healthy relationship with activity and mental health [28:00] Quotes “I needed that external stimulus from someone else who was almost like my honest mirror. I could hear it, but I was afraid to say it out loud. When I finally said to her that I need help, I need additional resources with people who are having similar struggles to me. I had done therapy, I’d done all the private things, but I needed something that was more of a group together. I needed accountability. As the pandemic went on further, I felt more isolated. I needed something that could help me have a deeper connection with other people.” [7:13] “The pandemic’s going to keep going. It’s not going away, this is our life now. For us to say that that we’re going to get to a new life at some point, great. But this is where we are now. I can’t change that. I can control what I do, I can try to control what goes on in my family. The biggest part of the transformation is that I’m okay with the chaos now.” [13:12] “You should do something for yourself every day. The idea that there is space for you if you let yourself have it. It’s okay, don’t feel guilty. Create that space for yourself.” [15:25] “I think that the biggest takeaway from the Transform process is that I’m taking care of myself and I feel less helpless. When the pandemic hit, I felt helpless, and I couldn’t figure out where that came from. It’s that I really needed to help myself. I was already helping so many other people. But I needed to help myself so that I could take care of all the other things that were on my plate.” [31:23] Resources Mentioned Check out the full episode page here Find Life Coaching for Women Physicians Online Follow Dr. Ali Novitsky on Facebook | Instagram Subscribe to Life Coaching for Women Physicians on Apple Podcasts Podcast production by the team at Counterweight Creative Related Episodes Episode 53: Dr. Harita Raja on Mind-Body Transformation Episode 51: Dr. Daisy Ramirez-Estrada On Learning to Prioritize Self Care Episode 50: Dr. Lindsey Davis on Overcoming Limiting Beliefs
Slow and steady wins every race, and as Dr. Komal Patil explains, it’s about finding that consistency in your routine. When you are working on your health and wellness goals consistently, you make steps towards them every day - even if you don’t devote hours to your end goal. Hot to Make Time for Self-Care Write down everything you do in a day Identify where you’re wasting your time (looking at you - scrolling on social media for 2 hours!) Replace these time slots with self-care practices and exercise Be consistent in your self-care practices About Dr. Komal Patil Dr. Patil is a board-certified endocrinologist and obesity medicine specialist. The Link Between Stress and Boundaries Dr. Komal Patil knows firsthand what it’s like to not show yourself the love and care we all really need. She was constantly tired, overweight, and not feeling at her best, at all. She wasn’t taking care of herself - and knew it. Komal was under immense amounts of stress, coming at her from all aspects of her life. She didn’t have any boundaries set with her clients and found herself bringing work home with her. The first thing Komal did was set some boundaries, which she found a positive impact on her stress levels. Since the global pandemic, Komal has had to change her approach to health and nutrition. But what didn’t change was her showing up consistently. Developing these habits over time helped Komal maintain at least a little bit of her regular routine, which is absolutely better than nothing. Carbs, Weight Loss, and Self-Care Komal shares that her diet includes carbohydrates. Carbs are an essential part of a balanced diet, but it’s about finding the right ones. Komal recommends finding natural carbs, such as fruit and vegetables, which won’t spike your blood sugar. We also talk about the link between weight loss and exercise. As someone who’s tried every diet out there, Komal is a firm believer in increasing your activity levels when you’re trying to lose weight. Especially when you focus on strength training. Finally, Komal stresses how important it is to make time for self-care. Self-care is not just soaking in the bath (though that’s great, too!): it’s exercising, sitting quietly, eating well, and spending time with the people you love. They may not be 100% perfect all the time, but it’s that consistency: the baseline minimum of a few workouts a week.” [14:20] “Carbs that are from nature and paired properly with fat, fiber, and protein will not cause those blood sugar spikes in the same way as if you’re eating a concentrated amount of carbs.” [20:30] “I think you have to find your baseline activity and then slowly increase your exercise from there. I don’t think exercise is a bad thing. Exercise has been really helpful for me, especially with a focus on strength. I see more of a change than I do with cardio alone.” [28:10] “First, we have to get out of the ‘I don’t have time’ mindset. You do have time. And if you don’t fill your cup first, you can’t fill anybody else’s. We have all of these responsibilities to our partners, family members, children, and work colleagues, to be able to deliver on all of these things. Accountability, small goals, and thought work are the keys to long-term success. It all starts with the thought piece. Dr. Harita Raja joins me to talk about her mind-body transformation and how life opened up for her in the last year. Key Takeaways Putting yourself first is not selfish. Setting realistic expectations and goals is the key to sustainable results. Finding an accountability group can dramatically increase your chances of success. About Dr. Harita Raja Harita Raja, MD is a board-certified psychiatrist who specializes in women's mental health. Dr. Raja founded Bethesda Women's Mental Health to provide women with a place to obtain compassionate and knowledgeable psychiatric care. She works closely with her patients, their loved ones, and their providers to find the best treatment plan. Dr. Raja received her medical degree from Albany Medical College in Albany, NY. She completed her psychiatry residency at Medstar Georgetown University Hospital, in Washington, DC. Dr. Raja has published numerous articles and a book chapter about women’s mental health. She has also presented her work at various local and national psychiatric meetings. She is a member of the D.C. Women’s Mental Health Consortium. Dr. Raja is dedicated to educating women and the community about women's mental health and the options for treatment using a holistic perspective. Get a Life Coach who Gets It Dr. Harita Raja shares how she spends her days helping women as a psychologist, but she neglected her own health and well-being. It was only at the start of lockdown that she realized she had to make substantial changes to her own health. One of the biggest factors Harita took into consideration when looking for a life coach was someone who would understand her lifestyle. That sense of understanding is especially important for physicians, as we have such a demanding life, combined with a tendency to be high-functioning. The first area we started looking at was Harita’s thoughts. Your thought model has a dramatic impact on every aspect of your health. That’s why it’s essential to get your thoughts on track before considering any physical transformation. Group Coaching and Accountability is Key In fact, for Harita, it was about four months of thought work before we started working on her physical transformation by adding strength training. Being in a group setting helped Harita with this transition as well. That safety zone where we could share our vulnerabilities honestly is such an essential part of a healthy relationship with yourself. Harita explains why setting realistic goals and expectations is so vital to any kind of health transformation. Setting these smaller goals makes your bigger transformations much more possible, as you get excited about the smaller successes you’re making. Homework for Women Physicians Are you hesitant to make any kind of health transformation? What’s one thing holding you back? Let me know in the comments on the episode page. But I couldn’t do that until then.” [13:09] “It’s finding that confidence in us first because that’s where it starts. It’s all in our thoughts. Anyone can do this, it’s just a matter of believing in ourselves.” [21:21] Resources Mentioned Check out the full episode page here Find Out More About the Transform Program Find Life Coaching for Women Physicians Online Follow Dr. Ali Novitsky on Facebook | Instagram Subscribe to Life Coaching for Women Physicians on Apple Podcasts Podcast production by the team at Counterweight Creative Related Episodes Episode 51: Dr. Daisy Ramirez-Estrada On Learning to Prioritize Self Care Episode 50: Dr. Lindsey Davis on Overcoming Limiting Beliefs Episode 49: Dr. Andrea Strathman On Achieving Sustainable Results
Lindsey Davis talks all about her lengthy career bringing Ancient Rome back to life for her readers, and discusses the latest book in her smash hit Flavia Albia series: A Comedy of Terrors.
The next book in the thrilling Flavia Albia series, by acclaimed author Lindsey Davis. Saturnalia, the Romans' mid-December feast, nominally to celebrate the sun's rebirth but invariably a drunken riot. Flavia Albia needs a case to investigate, but all work is paused. The Aventine is full of fracturing families. Wives plot to leave their husbands, husbands plot to spend more time with their mistresses. Masters must endure slaves taking obscene liberties, while aggressive slaves are learning to ape dangerous masters. But no one wants to hire an investigator during the holiday. Albia is lumped with her own domestic stress: overexcited children and bilious guests, too many practical jokes, and her magistrate husband Tiberius preoccupied with local strife. He fears a Nut War. Nuts are both the snack and missile of choice of tipsy celebrants, so there is a fortune to be made. This year a hustling gang from the past is horning in on the action. As the deadly menace strikes even close to home, and with law and order paused for partying, Albia and Tiberius must go it alone. The Emperor has promised the people a spectacular entertainment - but Domitian himself is a target for the old criminals' new schemes. Can the Undying Sun survive the winter solstice, or will criminal darkness descend upon Rome?
Creating lasting body transformation changes could be as easy as letting go of what you think you know. Dr. Lindsey Davis joins me to talk about how she released the beliefs that carbohydrates were evil and you shouldn’t exercise to lose weight. Steps to Overcoming Limiting Beliefs Understand you need to eat carbs and exercise for any kind of body transformation Know you have to be comfortable sticking with a plan for at least 18 months Be patient and make small, sustainable changes About Dr. Lindsey Davis Lindsey Davis is a private practice Breast Radiologist in her hometown, Panama City, FL. She attended the University of Florida for her Undergraduate and Medical degrees as well as her Diagnostic Radiology Residency. She then completed a Breast Imaging Fellowship at George Washington University. Lindsey was introduced to coaching in Ali’s original Mind, Body, Marriage course and has continued in the Life Coaching Society and Transform programs. Carbs are Essential Eating It’s so easy to follow mainstream dieting propaganda that’s currently saying you shouldn’t eat carbs if you want to lose weight. My guest today, Dr. Lindsey Davis, talks about how she learned to embrace carbs after having gestational diabetes. She overcame the belief that carbs would harm her body and stop her from losing weight. In fact, you need carbohydrates if you want to achieve any kind of body composition change. They’re essential for fuelling your body through hard workouts, replenishing your energy stores, and keeping your appetite content between workouts. A gamechanger for Lindsey was when she embraced the mindful macro approach to eating. She realized that counting macros and calories wasn’t sustainable for her long-term, especially if she were to go on vacation or out to eat at a restaurant. But with mindful macros, Lindsey knew she could stay relatively on plan while still having food freedom. Why Exercise Matters for Body Transformation Another myth weight loss “experts” tout is that you shouldn’t exercise if you’re trying to lose weight. This may be true if that’s all you’re trying to do, but exercise is essential, again, for actually transforming your body and creating lasting change. You should also prioritize strength training, especially if you’re over 30. Strength training should be a vital part of your exercise routine. It’s essential for longevity and for helping to transform your body. Finally, Lindsey recommends ditching the scale. When she learned to trust the process, regardless of the number on the scale, she felt free to make better decisions. Homework for Women Physicians Are you ready to transform your body and release your need to count every calorie? Applications are now open for my Transform program. We start in April! Let me know in the comments on the episode page if you have any questions about Transform. In This Episode Why you need to eat carbohydrates for any kind of body transformation [7:30] How to embrace the mindful macro approach to eating [9:45] How to incorporate exercise into your weight loss or body composition change [11:45] Why strength training is vital for making body composition changes [13:30] Why the number on the scale isn’t as important as the progress you’re making in a body composition change [20:30] Quotes “Don’t change anything that you’re not willing to do for 18 months. When I was doing this macro program, I thought that it was not real life. If you’re at a restaurant or you’re on vacation, it couldn’t be super accurate. With Mindful Macros, it just felt so much freer. You can be at a restaurant or on a cruise ship and eyeball a balanced plate, still have fun, and still be a part of everything else, while staying reasonably on plan. That’s the key to sustainability.” [10:03] “Exercise is my time alone, especially during the pandemic when we’re all home a lot. If I can escape for thirty minutes, it’s a treat. I can see how important it is. It doesn’t have to be for weight loss, my weight is exactly the same as it’s been for a year. None of it is for weight loss or physical changes, it’s important but it’s not all of it. I can see the benefits in all areas of my life. I think that’s when I really shifted to incorporating it every day because it wasn’t about weight loss, it was feeling better doing it. I was able to commit because it wasn’t for some external motivation, I was doing it for me.” [17:54] “Be patient and make small changes that seem easy. The concept of baseline minimum was very helpful to me. Commit to something small and take it slow, see how that goes, and see how your body responds. When you feel like you want to make another small change, do that as you’re ready. It doesn’t have to be having results in three weeks, or else. We’ve got all the time in the world to make your health better.” [23:31] Resources Mentioned Check out the full episode page here Apply for the Transform Program Starting April 2021 Find Life Coaching for Women Physicians Online Follow Dr. Ali Novitsky on Facebook | Instagram Subscribe to Life Coaching for Women Physicians on Apple Podcasts Podcast production by the team at Counterweight Creative Related Episodes Episode 45: Dr. Megan Zeien on Transformation through Strength Training Episode 46: Dr. Jennifer Moranda on Finding Food Freedom Episode 48: Dr. Laura Demoya on Discovery Self-Worth

In 1st century Rome, public gardens created by Julius Caesar have become dangerous haunts, especially for women alone. When her husband has to leave the city, Flavia Albia is left to supervise his building project in an old grotto. Soon it becomes apparent that a dangerous serial killer has made the Grove his killing ground. In this edition of Historical Fiction, Alice Roberts talks to Lindsey Davis, the unassailable market leader in the "crime in Ancient Rome" genre. Lindsey Davis has had a long and celebrated career as the creator of the Falco and Flavia Albia mysteries set in ancient Rome. But when she started out, publishers weren't interested in the period. Nobody, they told her, wanted to read about ancient Rome. She persevered, brought ancient Rome to life, and created a whole new sub-genre in popular fiction with lots of authors following in her footsteps. Hi there, I'm your host Jenny Wheeler, and today Lindsey talks about her remarkable series – first with 20 Marcus Didius Falco books and now 8 books in a follow-up series with a female investigator, Flavia Albia. We've got the latest in the series, three eBook copies of The Grove of the Caesars, featuring a serial killer, yes, they did have serial killers in those days, to give away to three lucky readers. (And yes - this is the same book - this is the US cover, while we used the UK cover in the intro.) Enter the draw on The Joys of Binge Reading website, or on our Binge Reading Facebook Page. Introducing Lindsey Davis author Jenny Wheeler: Hello there, Lindsey, and welcome to the show. It's great to have you with us. Ancient Rome Mysteries from Lindsey Davis Lindsey Davis: Thank you very much. I'm really pleased that you've asked me. It's lovely to have contact with New Zealand. Jenny Wheeler: You're sitting in Birmingham. Lindsey Davis: Birmingham, in England. Yes, the real Birmingham, the first Birmingham. Jenny Wheeler: You've had a long and celebrated career as an author, but people always like to know where you got started. You had 13 years as a civil servant before you started with your writing, didn't you? Lindsey Davis: I did. I think it's important. I think you need to have another job. Although some people do go straight into writing, I think like teachers and vicars are always better if they've done a different job first, the same goes for writers because you have to know what it's like to wake up in the dark and think you've got to go out on public transport to some terrible office to do a job that you hate. If you're going to impose something like that on your characters, it's simply a matter of experience and you have to gather information about life, so you might as well have a real job while you're doing it. Lindsey's Civil War saga Jenny Wheeler: You've got a great backlist of mysteries set in ancient Rome, twenty in the Falco series and now you've just published the eighth Flavia Albia book, The Grove of the Caesars. Why did you migrate from Birmingham to ancient Rome? Lindsey Davis: It was via the English Civil War because when I was about 14, I wanted to write a novel about my hometown. The most exciting thing I knew of what had happened there was Prince Rupert of the Rhine, the dastard, but handsome, came and attacked our city because we were very left wing and making swords for the parliament and he was on the King's side. The road to Ancient Rome I was taken along by my dad in my school uniform to the reference library where I read up on 17th century pamphlets. Nothing much came of that because I was only 14 and that's much too early to start really. But I kept the idea for years and years and when I was starting to write,

In this episode, Gordon speaks with Lindsey Davis about tapping into niches and how therapists can utilize the help of a dietitian. Lindsey explains in what situations would a therapist want to refer to a dietitian and how the two can work together to assist their clients. We also learn the steps a dietician would take to help their clients and then we hear Lindsey's thoughts on fad diets. Later, Gordon gives Lindsey some advice on her web presence and suggests blogging as frequently as possible to assist with search engine optimization. Meet Lindsey Davis Lindsey Davis is a Registered Dietitian and owner of Restorative Health, a nutritional counseling business aimed at transforming a client's diet and lifestyle by helping them embrace a BALANCED view of health and eliminate any weight-related fear, guilt or shame. Lindsey believes that all foods can fit into your meal plan and health-related goals are met by setting a series of small, measurable, realistic goals. She has worked clinically for 6 years and is well versed in chronic disease treatment as well as weight management. She loves the counseling environment as it allows her to develop a relationship with her clients and walk through a season of life with them. She strives to help her clients develop a positive body image while providing education and support to meet their personal, individualized goals. Dietitian Referrals Lindsey reached out to Gordon to educate others on when the therapy community should refer to a dietitian. For instance, people with eating disorders and disordered eating will benefit from having a registered dietitian. The dietitian can walk through with the client how to have a balanced lifestyle with their food choices. Therapists have clients with eating disorders and do not know how to address the food aspect without a dietitian. Lindsey would refer a client immediately the second you know they have an eating disorder so the dietitian and therapist can start working together. Normal Eating Lindsey's work is very individualized because eating disorders are not universal. Typically, Lindsey tries and nail down the negative thought that is running through her client's head. The dietitian would then challenge the thinking and find one that would reflect the truth. Many clients suggest they want to eat like a reasonable person, so Lindsey uses a resource from the Ellen Satter Institute as to what constitutes normal eating. Then, the client will pick which aspects of normal consumption to challenge them the most and Lindsey will work them one at a time with her clients. Fad Diets The reason Lindsey is so passionate about starting her private practice is because of her personal philosophy. Her philosophy is that all foods fit; she does not believe in excluding or restricting entire food groups unless a medical diagnosis requires it. Eating is about moderation and portion size; Lindsey wants to teach others to live a balanced and healthy lifestyle. People go out to eat, go on road trips, and come into contact with fast food. It is essential to learn how to navigate these situations without any fear or guilt. Specialty Pages Specialty pages are useful for SEO and online marketing. For instance, a specialty page will have one page devoted to binge eating and having one page dedicated to weight loss. These pages do not need to be lengthy, but it can be a subset of the services page. The reason for separate pages is that when people search the web for a particular problem, they will type their specific need. If you have addressed this particular need on your webpage, you will be the site that comes up first on Google. Gordon also suggests stepping blogging up to a few times a month if not once a week. Relevant content is essential for search engine optimization. Lindsey Davis is best known for her series of historical crime stories about a laid-back amateur sleuth called Marcus Didius Falco. Set against the turmoil of the 1st-century Roman Empire, the books are witty, gritty and hugely entertaining. She's also written stand-alone novels about Ancient Rome, and about the English Civil War. The recipient of many awards, including the Crime Writers' Association Diamond Dagger for Lifetime Achievement, Lindsey writes a book a year, but has still found time to be the Chair of the Society of Authors and Honorary President of the Classical Association. Lindsey talks to Michael Berkeley about her introduction to music as a schoolgirl in Birmingham, her passion for symphonic music and her decision to introduce a new, feisty female protagonist to succeed her beloved Falco. Her music includes works by Schubert, Tchaikovsky and Dvorak and - appropriately - Berlioz's Roman Carnival Overture. Producer: Jane Greenwood A Loftus production for BBC Radio 3.
Join RevKess and Kalisara as we talk to Assaph Mehr about his Felix the Fox series. Assaph has been a bibliophile since he learnt to read at the age of five, and a Romanophile ever since he first got his hands on Asterix, way back in elementary school. His main influences in writing are Steven Saylor, Lindsey Davis, Barry Hughart and Boris Akunin. Assaph now lives in Sydney, Australia with his wife Julia, four kids and two cats. By day he is a software product manager, bridging the gap between developers and users, and by night he's writing - he seems to do his best writing after midnight. Murder in Absentia: A young man is found dead in his bed, with a look of extreme agony on his face and strange tattoos all over his body. His distraught senator father suspects foul play, and knows who to call on. Enter Felix the Fox, a professional investigator. In the business of ferreting out dark information for his clients, Felix is neither a traditional detective nor a traditional magician - but something in between. Drawing on his experience of dealing with the shady elements of society and his aborted education in the magical arts, Felix dons his toga and sets out to discover the young man's killers. You can follow Assaph on his blog, Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, and Goodreads.

That Stack Of Books with Nancy Pearl and Steve Scher - The House of Podcasts
For some readers, the love of mysteries started with Nancy Drew. Here are some suggestions for mystery readers from Nancy Pearl and the folks around the table at the Bryant Corner Cafe. Nancy Pearl says her enjoyment of mysteries is limited by some wince-worthy writing. But she avoids those writers. The books Nancy recommended and some suggestions from the rest of us around the table at The Bryant Corner Café, 32nd and 65th in the Bryant neighborhood in Seattle. We will be there next Tuesday, June 2nd at 3:15. Drop on by. (Though Nancy finds them less mysteries than character driven stories. She isn’t sure they even belong in the mystery section and are an example of why she chaffs at putting books into different categories. ) Judy calls out Sherlock Holmes for re-reading. Nancy calls for Agatha Christie, even if, as she says, all the characters are just collections of ticks. For good mysteries with Roman themes, Keith enjoys the Flavia Alba mysteries by Lindsey DavisFor good writing and good mysteries with contemporary themes, Nancy recommends Walter Mosley and his Easy Rawlins series.Donna Leon’s Inspector Brunetti series and Andrea Camilleri’s Inspector Montalbano series are Steve’s favorites. Lindsey Davis describes herself modestly as “an English Lady Pensioner.” She is certainly an English Lady, but as an author she is far too prolific to fit any definition of the word retired. The author of 27 books, Davis’ most famous creation is Marcus Didius Falco, a series of detective novels set in Ancient Rome. Although she wins high marks from classicists—she was named honorary President of the Classical society and has been invited to speak at places like the Getty Villa—she balks at the idea that even the merest suggestion that the Falco novels filled rich details about every aspect of Roman life might be described as “educational.” Instead, she insists they’re entertainment. That they are. In this interview, we talk to Ms Davis about the reasons for the enduring popularity of the detective genre and why she resonated with the Roman Empire as a backdrop for her novels. (The answers will surprise you.) Currently, Ms Davis is writing books in a spin-off series about Falco’s daughter who is also a detective. You can find Ms Davis on the web at www.lindseydavis.co.uk. All 27 of her books are available on Amazon. If you’re looking for a place to explore her work there’s no better place than with The Silver Pigs, the award-winning first novel in the Falco series. Be sure to rate and comment in iTunes.

Lindsey Davis was born and raised in Birmingham, read English at Oxford, then joined the civil service, which she left in 1985.She started writing about Romans in The Course of Honour, the remarkable true love story of the Emperor Vespasian and his mistress Antonia Caenis. Her research into First Century Rome inspired The Silver Pigs, the first outing for Falco and Helena, which was published in 1989. Starting as a spoof using a Roman ‘informer' as a classic, metropolitan private eye, the series has developed into a set of adventures in various styles which take place throughout the Roman world. The Silver Pigs won the Authors' Club Best First Novel award in 1989; she has since won the Crimewriters' Association Dagger in the Library and Ellis Peters Historical Dagger, while Falco has won the Sherlock Award for Best Comic Detective. She has been Chair of the UK Crimewriters' Association and Honorary President of the Classical Association. Her Official Website is www.lindseydavis.co.uk.
