Welcome back to another episode of Decoding 40. Vin learns that having one more drink before you leave Thanksgiving dinner is a recipe for waking up in your drawers the next day. After a spotless no road rage record, L finds himself in a verbal altercation with an MTA bus driver. Rick is down in South Beach setting up for The Fearless Artist gallery at Art Basel. Mack has a call from hell with a software salesperson and his daughter has a special milestone this week. Next, we discuss the Kyle Rittenhouse trial and the murder trial of Ahmaud Arbery. These two cases happening simultaneously gripped the nation and the verdicts helped to further polarize this nation. While justice was definitely served in the murder trial in Brunswick Georgia, the Rittenhouse case may have emboldened white supremacy and vigilantism in America. After that, it's movie review time. This week we reviewed the Netflix feature, The Harder They Fall. Racial justice and injustice in America today. We are relieved by the guilty verdicts and life sentences for all three men charged with murdering Ahmaud Arbery in Brunswick Georgia. But we're still thinking about the Not Guilty verdict for Kyle Rittenhouse, charged with shooting three people, killing two, during the street protests over the police shooting of a black man, Jacob Blake, in Kenosha, Wisconsin. John Nichols comments on that trial, and its broader significance. Also: Racism in America for decades led to strict housing segregation. But historians are now showing that that wasn't simply the result of white people refusing to live near Blacks--segregated housing was the result of a carefully organized, long-term effort to establish a legal basis for systematic racial discrimination. And the groups that succeeded were not the KKK or White Power groups. It was realtors' organizations. Eric Foner reviews that history.

A dramatically different short story that speaks to the heart strings of young people and adults in today's America it is available now for pre-order on amazon.com written by Michael D Beckford. Ahmaud Aubrey was a victim of racial profiling Is there brother I'm at Aubrey was killed cold-blooded in Brunswick Georgia trying to defend himself. These white vigilantes killed him in the process of what they calling a quote unquote citizens arrest. His brother did not commit a crime at the very least he trespassed on a property that wasn't even fully constructed yet which as we all know trespassing is a minor offense he's not commit a burglary that was no violent crime involved and this should have never ever have happened to this young man. Gone too soon as his life because of the actions of these Three goons. 2. This was a KKK style killing When I first saw this video last year which I could not really complete the whole thing to this day these videos really make me emotionally charged so I really try to stay away from him but when I watched enough to know what happened and see what's going on it surely reminded me of the days of you know the KKK The mask to vigilantes for white power and white supremacy went around killing black people for position for power and to completely terrorize black neighborhoods. So when I watch this video I realized that this was a KKK style killing of another unarmed black man. . 3. The police and the da should also be up for charges for falsifying information It wasn't until certain video was released in regards to this killing that we started to find that the police and the da is complicit in the murder of Vermont Aubrey they try to rub it off and say oh yeah just a burglary and other black kid doing this during that and someone was protecting their quote unquote property which you know in America property is a contentious thing because we as blacks were once considered the very thing for which they feel they have to outright defend by force but as we all know especially those who claim to be Christian property you can get back you can rebuild but we'll never be able to get back and rebuild on Aubrey's life and a da and the police should be also prosecuted it's in the best of the law in regards to them being complicit and it's deadly act by these white vigilantes. and with the da and police help these murderous vigilantes could have gotten away with it. Where is Sleepy Joe? Unfortunately it seems that sleepy Joe has been pretty mute and regards to this particular case I'm assuming he doesn't want to sway the courts but where is sleepy Joe I don't know. Let's Take Em To Church This world needs a reset since the pandemic has been a strong tense atmosphere of racism and prejudice in America, anti-black, anti-asian and anti everyone else. Back to IL and normal travel is our mantra this month. We left FL to head north and a more typical summer experience after 6 months being stationary. The trip home involved our annual stop in Gaffney, SC for a motorhome check up. This year due to the age of the MH, we had all of the fluids replaced - expensive, but necessary. We try to keep our Dutch Star in good condition so that we are not left on the side of the highway while on a trip. We also stopped Brunswick GA for a short side trip to Jekyll Island. The June calendar photo was taken on Driftwood Beach on the island. We’ll be in IL until August when we head West for the fall. We share ideas about RV buying, tank management, campgrounds, boondocking and many other current topics. How about a Rv bidet? I have never thought about such a thing, but they are for sale - the Butt Buddy. Who remembers the Jetsons animated tv series from the 60s? They predicted many of our tech advances that we use today. Fifty or 30 amp that is the question. How much can your relay on 50 to run your coach? Kitchen ideas, water hoses and much more are discussed in this episode.

In this episode and the next, he seeks out stories and advice from others. This week he talks to Warren and Keisha Cameron from High Hog Farm in Grayson, Georgia. This couple met on a dare and a few years later were presented with the opportunity for a fresh start when they fixed up a homestead and created a farm, which now primarily focuses on raising livestock for fiber. My thoughts on the 2 police killings which have rocked America.
What a timely session with Drew. In retrospect, there is so much more I wish I would have asked, based on what has transpired in our community and in our country since we recorded this. Drew has a heart for reconciliation. He believes that we can be and need to be reconciled to Christ, and to one another, through racial, cultural, and ethnic barriers. Union City Church is seeking to do just that in the way it worships, disciples, grows, and serves the community. Drew also shared some wonderful insight on how we might view this time of Corona Virus through a spiritual growth lens, and what we can do to make sure that we don't forget some of the important lessons we are learning during this time. Tune in to hear someone share from their heart about how we can come together as believers, as community members, and how we can choose to be defined not by our differences but by something much, much deeper that ties us together. In this installment of 3D Politics,Govt Cowards Thugs and Tyrants Part 1: Absence of Sense. Local & state officials are passing the buck and claiming that the decisions of local importance need approval from others who live and work at govt. buildings, which are hours away from the people who are impacted by such matters. Part 2: Brunswick & Tanzania Demand Justice. We break down the case of the Brunswick Georgia retired cop who behaved quite unneighborly when a jogger trotted down his street. He's now charged with murder, along with some of the ad hoc posse who tracked down and ultimately shot the jogger to death.Part 3: Aussie Thugs & Courthouse Thugs. This past weekend there arose a video account of a woman in Australia who adorned a sandwich board with a handwritten message of dissent of local policy. The govt. decided that it was not a proper protest that the govt. could support with a permit to gather. So they sent the cops to apply force upon her while her young child screamed in horror of losing his mother to the impending arrest. then we questioned why the multipurpose county offices which also house district courts (when they are not indefinitely disbanded; are ordered closed by state court judges? Is this not a county facility of essential purpose for matters not involving a judicial branch function? We simply ask county commissioners to take their own buildings back and open their essential services and public records.Watch the enclosed Video here, or Listen to the Podcast, here.Watch the entire weekly telecast live, every Monday night at 7pm, on our Facebook page. -
This week, we're giving our (maybe predictable) opinions on the lynching (let's call it what it is) of Ahmaud Arbery by (at least) 2, white men in Brunswick GA. If you've listened to this podcast for any amount of time, you know we live in Atlanta and, although this happened nowhere near the Atlanta metro area, we weren't surprised one bit it happened in the state. As usual, we said exactly what we felt and pulled no punches...from white men in general to the NAACP to the black "activists" on the internet simply using this murder as yet another way to clout chase, we're TIRED of all of it. Check it out and see what we thought about this whole situation.

We have talked with the peace activists of the Catholic Worker movement on several BCR episodes [#29 & #46 with bonus material] and knew that the seven men and women who broke into the U.S. Kings Bay Naval Base at St. Marys, Georgia would be in court in Brunswick in mid-August. This submarine base is where the U.S. military stores its Trident nuclear missiles. We wanted to talk with four of the Kings Bay Plowshares 7, who were under house arrest and on bail, about the hearing and how they were doing. That week was also the anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, and there were protests going on outside the Kings Bay Naval Base. So, while Becky and I sat at her brother's dining room table in Santa Maria, California, we called south Georgia. We first talked with Kathy Kelly, Brian Terrell, and Anthony Donovan while they were fasting and holding a vigil outside the gates of the Kings Bay Naval Base. The next day we spoke with four of the Kings Bay Plowshares 7. The day before they had argued in the Federal Court in Brunswick Georgia that the case against them be dropped based on RFRA – the Religious Freedom Restoration Act – which requires the government to prove a compelling state interest if it restricts a person’s free exercise of religious beliefs – a defense successfully used by the Religious Right. We talked with Carmen Trotta, Martha Hennessy, Clare Grady, and Patrick O’Neill. Here are some resources that were mentioned during our conversations:Anthony Donovan recommended -- "Warheads to Windmills: How to Pay for a Green New Deal." On April 4, 2018, the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s assassination, seven Catholic peace activists cut fences and entered the King’s Bay Naval Base in Southeast Georgia, to protest the United States nuclear weapons arsenal. King’s Bay is presumed to be home to several Trident Nuclear Submarines. They called their protest a “Plowshares Action,” inspired by the book of Isaiah, from the famous passage, “They shall beat their swords into plowshares.” The King’s Bay 7, as they have come to be known, were arrested, and held at the Glynn County Detention Center in Brunswick GA.Four of the defendants accepted terms of release that allowed them to return to their homes while they awaited trial. Three of the activists, Elizabeth McAlister, who lived for decades here in Baltimore; a Jesuit priest from New York, Fr. Steve Kelly; and an activist from New Haven, CT, Mark Colville, chose to remain in jail.Fifteen months later, they are still there. Pre-trial hearings were held last November. Another hearing is scheduled before US Judge Lisa Godbey- Wood on August 7th. If the Judge decides to deny the defense motion to dismiss, the case will go to trial.I spoke with Liz McAlister from jail last January, in an interview that aired here on Midday on the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. She had recently celebrated her 79th birthday. This is the second time in her long life of activism that she’s been incarcerated for an extended period. She and the others have been charged with three felonies and a misdemeanor trespassing violation. If convicted, they could face up to 25 years in prison. Part of their defense invokes the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, a 1993 law which protects the exercise of religion. That same act was key to the Hobby Lobby case in 2014, in which the company sought to deny its employees health care coverage for contraception because it violated the company’s religious principles. The King’s Bay 7 claim that because the Catholic Church considers nuclear weapons immoral, the Government must accommodate their religious beliefs. There have been more than 100 Plowshares actions since the 1980s. This is the first time a court is being asked to consider this particular line of defense. The founders of our country codified in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States freedoms and liberties that countless people have lost their lives defending, including the revolutionaries whose sacrifice we celebrate this weekend. Those freedoms and liberties were not extended to all at the outset of our founding. Many of those freedoms continue to be elusive for some people for reasons having perhaps less to do with law and more to do with hate and animus. And while the founders could not imagine a group of people like the King’s Bay 7, they did assert that the goal of a government should be to construct a republic in which citizens could flourish in whatever manner that meant for them as individuals. They understood that the pursuit of happiness means something different to every one of us. Elizabeth McAlister and her fellow activists have devoted their lives to the assertion that nuclear annihilation is a real and present danger. They are willing to sacrifice their liberty, comfort and their own pursuit of happiness to protest against our country’s participation in that danger. They are taking a stand, a stand not shared by the overwhelming majority of their fellow citizens, and they are exercising their freedom to discuss and display their convictions in a court of law. As a practical matter, will these Plowshares actions lead to nuclear disarmament in the U.S. or elsewhere? No. But will the King’s Bay 7’s dedication to the cause of peace, and their unrelenting reminders of the dangers of war, serve as an inspiration for others who commit to making our country more tolerant, less racist, fairer, more compassionate? Yes, I think they will. On this Fourth of July, as we celebrate the principals upon which this great nation was formed, and the courage of the founders who risked their lives and liberty to achieve freedom for all of us, let us also acknowledge the courage and sacrifice of people like Elizabeth McAlister for reminding us, from a jail cell in Georgia, what freedom means.

In this episode, Tam and I interview Mandy Thompson on the self-care essentials for today's woman. Mandy is a true daughter of the South, raised in rural Georgia with pencils in hand as early as her mama can remember. She moved to the Georgia Coast after graduating from Georgia Southern University in 2001, and spent 15 years in vocational ministry before becoming a professional artist. Mandy returned to art in her mid-30s as a way to work through depression and process her emotions, and found abstract art as the medium to most fully express emotional concepts. She has wrapped her art career in the healing power of creativity, both through viewing and creating it. Not only does she encourage others through her work, but she works with those who are interested in using creativity to bring healing in their own lives. She now lives in Brunswick Georgia with her husband and two beautiful daughters. She’s a member of the Glynn Art Association, Jekyll Island Art Association, and has a private studio downtown at the Brunswick Stewdio. You can find her work in multiple local venues and exhibits. www.mandythompson.com
