This week in honor of Li-Fraumeni Syndrome Awareness Month, we have selected this episode from February 2022 to re-share. It features Whitney O'Connor who discovered her link to Li-Fraumeni Syndrome when diagnosed with breast cancer. Li-Fraumeni Syndrome is just one of the many genetic mutations that can lead to a breast cancer diagnosis. Whitney was diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder called the Li-Fraumeni Syndrome. She has been diagnosed with breast cancer twice – the first time at 30 and then again at 32. While her diagnosis of Li-Fraumeni Syndrome provided the hint to a cancer mystery, it also gave Whitney a built-in support system because the gene ran in her family. In this episode, Whitney reads from her piece “The Cancer Gene” from Wildfire Magazine's 2021 “Family” issue. People with eating disorders are being repeatedly failed by the system and radical changes need to be made to prevent further tragedies. That's according to the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman UK, Rob Behrens. He says little progress has been made in the six years since the publication of a report which highlighted serious failings in eating disorder services. Rob joins Nuala to talk about what those failings are, and what needs to be done. In her memoir Outside the Sky is Blue, writer and journalist Christina Patterson tells her story of what it's like to grow up with a sibling who is mentally ill. Her older sister, Caroline, had her first breakdown when she was fourteen and Christina was nine. Later, Caroline was diagnosed with schizophrenia and was heavily medicated for the rest of her life. Christina joins Nuala to discuss growing up in a family in the shadow of mental illness. Actor, singer, songwriter, and all round South London superstar Cynthia Erivo joins Nuala to speak about her role in the upcoming film, Luther: The Fallen Sun, where she appears opposite Idris Elba. She'll also talk about making the movie version of the musical Wicked, where she is playing the lead role of Elphaba, and being one step away from an EGOT (an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony) award winner. Would you want to know if you were going to get cancer? Journalist Hilary Osborne was diagnosed with breast cancer last year. She regrets not finding out sooner whether she carries the BRCA2 gene. Whereas comedian Michelle Brasier has been told by doctors she has a 97% chance of developing cancer, and is living life to the full. So, how do you face the stark reality of living with a hereditary and life-shortening illness? Hilary and Michelle join to Nuala to talk about their experiences. Self-care is not selfish but self-preservation.Dr. Simran Malhotra is a triple board-certified physician in internal medicine, hospice & palliative care, and lifestyle medicine as well as a certified health and wellness coach. On episode #110 of the Thriving minds podcast we discuss how she survived BRCA 1 previvor with a strong family history of breast & female reproductive cancers and underwent a risk reducing bilateral mastectomy & total hysterectomy in 2020 at the age of 32.  This is podcast episode is dedicated to my beautiful friend Fiona Van Der Poorten, who was not as lucky to get the gift of DNA sequencing at 26 years old to reduce her breast cancer risk and passed this year leaving behind 5 sons. In the last few hours, she posted on Facebook that the last 24 hours were the best of her life. Fiona wants you to have the best 24 hours of your life today. After learning about her own genetic risk of cancer and her professional experiences in palliative care, she founded Coach Simran MD, a platform where she works with and educates women at high risk for cancer with or without genetic mutations on the powerful impact that positive lifestyle changes can have on their quality of life and even longevity.   She describes wellness as a mindset. That food is medicine, sleep is medicine and exercise is medicine. Through her real-life experiences as a patient, family member and palliative care physician. She became passionate about empowering and guiding women, particularly those at risk for serious illness on the powerful impact that positive lifestyle changes can have on the quality of life and longevity. In 2013, Hollywood star Angelina Jolie made news when she announced she had undergone a preventative mastectomy after being diagnosed with the 'BRCA' gene mutation. The name BRCA is an abbreviation for BReast CAncer gene, a hereditary gene that affects your body's ability to suppress tumour growth and increases the likelihood of cancers such as breast, prostate and ovarian. Those who are likely to have it can be tested for it and there are preventative measures that can be taken such as mastectomies and an ‘oophorectomy’-a surgical procedure to remove ovaries. Rachel McKeon is someone who has made the monumental decision to undergo such a procedure. After being diagnosed with the BRCA1 gene, Rachel decided to take her health into her own hands and underwent a number of procedures to reduce the risk of her contracting cancer in the future. Speaking to Dermot and Dave, Rachel shared her story, and how the support of the Marie Keating foundation was so important throughout the process. A particular version of the ginger gene MC1R underpins the fiery hair and freckled complexion of redheads, famed and feared in many cultures. But it is also linked to increased pain sensitivity and skin cancer risk. So where did it come from? And are redheads really endangered? As far back as the 19th Century, doctors realised that some types of cancer seemed to run in families, but it was not until the last decades of the 20th Century that scientists started to pin down the genetic culprits. Faults in two of these genes, BRCA1 and BRCA2, significantly increase the chances of developing breast, ovarian or prostate cancer.

Tests revealed that she carried a gene mutation commonly associated with Jews—yet Medina was a Hispano, meaning that her ancestry was both Native American and Spanish, with no known Jewish background.
