Listeners of Leading With Your Gut that love the show mention: jenna,It's the holiday season! For some that means times of love, joy, connection, and community. For others, the holiday season can be nerve wracking, emotional, and expensive. We also often forget that some folks do not have opportunity to be with loved ones or aren't able to financially afford America's consumerism culture. Then there are some of us who have a hard time being with family members because of how we socially identify. Showing up authentically for some marginalized folks can be hard, especially if the predominate group has identities that match America's "dominate" or "normative" culture. And in these settings, difficult conversations can sometimes arise causing awkwardness, tension, and emotional harm. So what can we do to protect ourselves and others? In this episode I offer tips for what to do when we're in these harmful situations. My tips are both for folks that have identities that match America's "dominate" culture and folks that are marginalized. Thanks for tuning in. On today's episode, returning guest Ashley Morgan (she/her) and I discuss the phenomenon of Imposter Syndrome, loosely meaning doubting one's own abilities and feeling like a fraud; leading us to converse about Jodi-Ann Burey and Ruchika Tulshyan's articles in the Harvard Business Review, “Stoping Telling Woman that they have Imposter Syndrome” and “End Imposter Syndrome in your Workplace.” Our conversation dives into "performative culture," particularly around diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace, the urgency to listen and believe Black and Brown folks, and finally how Ashley is able to support her female-based clients with reclaiming their power. I want to thank Ashley for being a returning guest on Leading With Your Gut, the podcast. A little bit about Ashley Morgan...After 16 years in Corporate America, most recently as a Director & AVP, Ashley is passionate about helping women unlock, own and leverage their power. She is on a mission to help women create success on their terms. Ashley teaches leadership and strategies for career acceleration without burnout. This week on Leading With Your Gut, I share pieces of my life of when it's been difficult for me to ask for help; something that has been challenging in adulthood. In this episode, I share stories as it relates to my personal health and the desire to be vulnerable and dependent upon on my community instead of being "strong" all the time. In my adulthood, I went from believing that individualism and self-sufficiency were skills that held more value than learning how to be part of a community for support. For me, it takes courage to shift my mindset and to accept that asking for help does not equate to weakness. At the end of the episode I offer a framework by Iyanla Vanzant from her book Get Over It! The framework is called the 4 A's: Awareness, acknowledgement, acceptance, and action. This framework has helped shift my mindset and deepen my awareness, in general, and particularly in this area. If you have a hard time finding the courage to ask for help, I want you to know that you're not alone. To stay up to date on episode releases and featured guests, follow @leadingwithyourgut or @jennareneeshellman on instagram. October is National Breast Cancer Awareness month and today, Friday, October 15th, is National Mammogram Awareness Day. Taking care of your body is a form of self-love and self-care. Check out the resource links below on how you can receive (early) breast cancer screenings.I'm honored to have my longtime friend Breanna Gastaldi (she/her) as my guest on the show. Bre has a perspective of intimately experiencing cancer within her family and somewhat within herself. During the pandemic, Bre decided to start early screenings for breast cancer. Earlier this year, a spot was detected on her breast and Bre ended up having surgery to remove pre-cancerous cells. Bre was 33 years old when this happened. Luckily, Bre is okay, and is thankful that she decided to get early screening vs waiting 10 more years to start this process. This episode is important for Bre and I because we want ya'll to be proactive about your health and preventative care, particularly when it comes to cancer screening. If you have health insurance, preventative screenings like mammograms should be covered, but if not or if you don't have insurance, there are organizations that can pay for these services. Check out the National Breast Cancer Foundation for more information. I want to thank Bre again for being a guest on my show. Hey ya'll, I'm Jenna Renee Shellman (she/her). Welcome back to Leading With Your Gut, the podcast. However, the themes around upcoming episodes will be centered on self-love, empathy, and connection. One of my favorite quotes is "When you know better, you do better" (Maya Angelou); and through storytelling, we can learn to do better. Meet Goli Kalkoran; a lawyer-turned-entrepreneur. A courageous woman who quit practicing law; did a lot of soul-searching, tried a bunch of different things to figure out what she wanted to do next, and happened upon an idea that turned into a business. But the most interesting part of Goli's story and the reason behind her hit podcast and blog Lessons From A Quitter is the year-long journey it took her to really admit to herself that she wanted to quit being a lawyer and figure out how to start over. Goli is the quintessential risk-averse, people-pleasing, type-A personality individual. She studied hard in school, got good grades, and followed the predictable path to law school, never really questioning what being a lawyer actually meant. Not surprisingly, when she started practicing law, she hated it! But like most people who follow a traditional path by spending a lot of time, money, and energy to get that degree, Goli accepted that, regardless of her happiness, she had to work as a lawyer. Goli never even considered any other possibility than practicing law. Instead, Goli just daydreamed of winning the lottery. Does this resonate with you?In this week’s episode of Leading With Your Gut, Goli shares how she was able to pivot from her burnout and create a life that she desired. We talk about the layers of perfectionism and people-pleasing that Goli had to unravel to accept who she is really is; for her, and not for anyone else. After the show, please follow Goli and Lessons From A Quitter on social media and subscribe to her show. If you’re in a leadership position where you oversee adults or students, are a business owner, or manage clients, this episode is for you. This week on Leading With Your Gut, I share 5 values that I believe all leaders should commit to in order to stay focused, build trust, and grow. Many of you know that my career started out as a public school teacher managing students, district standards, and parent expectations; then I transitioned into the corporate setting managing adults before becoming an executive coach and workplace consultant. In my professional experience, one of the best ways to lead others in any capacity is to choose a set (about 5) of values that pertain to your team or situation; communicate those values clearly with your direct reports, and stick by them. The 5 values that I have chosen to discuss are the following, in no particular order:EmpathyVulnerabilityAcceptanceTransparencyAccountabilityAfter the episode, DM me on Instagram @leadingwithyourgut or @jennareneeshellman to share what your values are, or what you think of the values I've chosen to discuss. Welcome back to another solo episode of Leading With Your Gut. In this episode, I share some insights into my family tree, particularly on my dad's side. For this episode, I wanted to use this space to amplify my grandmother's voice. My grandma, Betty Collins Shellman was a generous, loving, and musically talented woman. She died when I was a teenager, but I still remember her presence. Grandma Betty was a lifelong activist; always attending protests in Seattle, promoting equity for all, and staying on the right side of history. Her voice, like many other Black women, need to be heard and shared. In the 1980s my grandmother, Betty Shellman, wrote a piece in Seven Stars & Orion by Ester Hall Mumford. Grandma Betty related her memories of growing up east of the Cascades in Wenatchee, coming to Seattle, and what life was like for her and for the people she knew during the Great Depression. On this week's episode, I narrate her story. Welcome back to another unedited episode of Leading With Your Gut. This is the third week now that I just speak from my heart while stumbling over some of my words. Today is an important day (June 15, 2020) because the Supreme Court has ruled that discrimination against LGBTQ individuals at work is illegal under the Civil Rights Act. In this week's episode, I share my ongoing revolution as a Black woman, monumental events that have occurred in the last 10 years or so, and some lessons learned. I also discuss a few of my memories of racial discrimination that I repressed or forgot about up until recently. My childhood friend Shalanee Joyner joins me this week on Leading With Your Gut. In this episode, Shalanee and I discuss what it was like growing up amongst mostly predominately White people. Shalanee is a 34-year old light-skinned Black woman who grew up feeling like a chameleon; blending in mostly with Whiteness or White culture because it was easier. I'm a biracial Black woman who grew up never feeling good enough in either White or Black communities, but like Shalanee assimilated to mostly Whiteness because it was easier.Shalanee and I share similar stories, experiences, and reflect upon the following:-recognizing when we became aware of our racial differences as kids -growing up in a predominately White neighborhood, going to White Schools, and having mostly White friends-discriminatory and racists remarks against us-privileges in favor and against us-the importance of this movement and our hope that it's not just a trend-how we can amplify our voice and our experiences-the importance of Black voices-how this is an issue of race, however until all marginalized groups are free, no one is freeThis Wednesday, June 10th, at 11am PST, I'll be hosting a free introductory class that will explore privilege. I ask that participants donate to one of the organizations listed in the Eventbrite details. In addition to hosting this free introductory class, I'll be teaching a four-part paid course in the coming weeks. This experiential course will further help you understand, deepen, and utilize your privilege so you can become a lifelong ally at work, with your teams, students, employees, staff members, friends, and families; so you can fully PROTECT Black people and POC around you. J-L might be in the limelight now however, for 16 years the struggle was real.Since his undergraduate days at Georgetown, J-L balanced studying and working as a lawyer while mastering his comedy skills at night. For 16 years, J-L has been given many promising opportunities in comedy including appearing on late night television. However, J-L's career never grew to the level of success that he had hoped. For 16 years J-L has been in the middle of the arena waiting for his comedy career to take off with his head mostly planted in the dirt, daring greatly and rising strong (in the words of Bene Brown).I’m beyond excited to have J-L Cauvin (pronounced Co-Van) as my guest on Leading With Your Gut this week for a double feature. I became a fan of J-L's after watching his content on Youtube and then subscribing to his podcasts Making Podcasts Great Again and Righteous Prick. I quickly realized that J-L was talented, smart, vulnerable, and able to finesse politics and social issues into his humor so well. What I learned about J-L is that he has passion, drive, and humility to push through his failures. The first time we connected he told me that he was overwhelmed with the exponential growth that his comedy career has taken in last few weeks. In just a a short amount of time, everything that he has been working towards is all here now. Ironically, it took Covid-19 to give J-L the chance to be truly seen. J-L shares his story of courage, despair, and hope. In part 1 J-L and I discuss his background, struggles as a comedian, and gut instinct to continue following his dream. In part 2 we talk about Trump. And Trump actually stops by to answer a couple of pressing questions that I have...After you are done listening, please go buy J-L’s new album Fireside Craps: The Deuce rated #1 on iTunes comedy charts. Sex Communication Coach Leah Carey believed that she was unlovable and broken after growing up in an abusive household. Leah was often criticized by her father for being fat, ugly, and undesirable even though she wasn’t. As an adult, the abuse from her father ultimately caused Leah to feel self conscious and confused about sex.It wasn’t until she had the opportunity to take a solo road trip around America when her life started to change. In this adventure, Leah evolved into a confident and sexually proud woman. In this week’s episode of Leading With Your Gut, Leah Carey shares her story and mission behind her coaching business and podcast called, Good Girls Talk About Sex.Nothing is off limits in this episode. If you are not comfortable listening to two women talking about sex, maybe this one isn’t for you. If you are curious, please hang in for the next hour! In this episode Leah and I discuss quite a bit such as female body image, sexual abuse and trauma, the objectification of women, sexual shame and confusion, pleasure, dating for sex, tantric sex, female sexual repression, and sexual positivity. Leah speaks with openness and vulnerability about her experiences. Through her sexual awakening, Leah has learned to rely on her basic instincts, aka, her gut when encountering new partners and situations to maintain safety and control. I really enjoyed connecting with Leah. I think what she is doing as a coach and podcast host is empowering so many people, especially women to not feel shameful of their bodies or desires. Leading With Your Gut listeners, get ready to laugh for the next hour! I am so excited to have my friend and entrepreneur Benjamin Lehrer otherwise known as “Burberry Ben” join me on this week’s episode. At a very young age, Ben's curiosity for business was apparent. He enjoyed creating ideas, dreaming about possibilities, and developing solutions to make a profit. In this episode "Burberry Ben" shares a few stories of his early ambitions including selling fake Louis Vuitton bags from Canal Street to peers and customers on eBay.There is no denying that Ben has always been capable of making money. One of best things about this episode is Ben’s ability to be reflective on the mistakes he made in his younger days. Ben recognizes that he didn’t really understand or think about “ethics” as a whole. In his early twenties Ben’s ideas were focused on helping people quickly and making a profit, without thinking through some business logistics. Fast forward to Ben’s thirties and how he has evolved. Ben now is the founder of two successful businesses, WebTitans and Modern Fox Rentals. The way that Ben conducts business, his motivations, importance of ethics, and purpose have changed since he was slanging fake bags in college. Ben is grateful for his parents. They continuously guide him through his decisions and have really helped shaped his success. Benjamin Lehrer is absolutely hilarious. This episode will offer lessons, stories, and tips, combined humor for those thinking about starting a business. What does it mean for Ben to lead with his gut? To turn off all the “shoulds” and focus on what makes him happy.Connect with Jenna:leadingwithyourgut@gmail.comIG:https://www.instagram.com/leadingwithyourgut/https://www.instagram.com/jennareneeshellman/Connect with Ben:https://webtitans.net/https://www.modernfoxrentals.com/IG:https://www.instagram.com/benjaminlehrer/

Zachary Speron, a director of a higher education career college joins me on this week’s episode of Leading With Your Gut. Zachary has a purpose to help aspiring students find the right educational pathway that’s best for them. A pathway that leads to job opportunities and that is outcome based. Zachary and I are huge supporters of higher education and we understand the value of a bachelor's degree. However, with student loan debt sitting around $1.4 trillion in 2017, up from $260 billion in 2004, it is important for people considering higher education to do their research and to listen to their gut before making a huge investment. Zachary believes that part of this research is finding employers who offer tuition reimbursement and partnerships. This opportunity can cut student loan costs and have a high likelihood of job retention and advancement. In the intro, I share my story of overcoming student loan debt. To all the millennials listening: What was your American Dream? Did you have a similar experience like myself? After the show, please email me your story. I would love to hear it! Like many women, Devin felt the societal pressure to find a man, hunker down, and get married quickly. Luckily, Devin caught her fiancé in a lie and was able to get out of the relationship prior to their wedding. After Devin called off the relationship, the loneliness kicked it. She didn’t have many people to connect with about her breakup and she didn’t know any resources that could help her recoup the cost of the wedding. Devin’s experience motivated her and friend Jessica Heilweil to create an online community that offers connection, tips, and advice for called off engagements. And just like that DIYBreakUP was up and running! After listening to Devin’s story, please download Part 2 with co-founder Jessica Heilweil. Welcome to Part 2 of d.i.y.BreakUp! You heard it right. Do it yourself breakup! In this episode I am chatting with co-founder Jessica Heilweil, Devin Allen’s friend and business partner. Unlike Devin, Jessica grew up not feeling the societal pressures of getting married and having a family. However, when Jessica and her husband Joe got engaged everything started to change. Jessica and her then fiancé experienced the pressure and expectations of having a traditional American wedding. Something that they never originally wanted. Unfortunately, they caved and went the traditional route, spending a lot of money and saying yes to things that they didn’t care about. As a result, wedding planning created a lot of stress. Jessica believes that she started listening to her intuition once she decided to cancel the prepaid wedding plans and celebrate the way her and Joe really wanted: by hosting a backyard BBQ wedding with close friends and family! In this episode of Leading With Your Gut, Jessica shares the stress and frustration of losing money and not having a community to reach out to. Through the creation of d.i.yBreakUP, Jessica and her business partner Devin built an online community for people who need connection, tips, advice, and strategies for calling off a wedding and recouping money.Jessica reminds us to follow our intuition when it comes to planning a wedding and to be careful of getting carried away in hopes of pleasing other people. She says, “The marriage is the end goal and the wedding is just the pit stop.”Website:https://diybreakup.com/IG:https://www.instagram.com/diybreakup/Connect with Jenna Renee Shellman:leadingwithyourgut@gmail.comIG:https://www.instagram.com/leadingwithyourgut/

"Why do I stay sick?"Certified Health and Wellness Coach Victoria Albina asked herself this years ago when she was suffering from IBS, SIBO, parasites, heartburn, and other chronic pain issues. Victoria went to countless western doctors, but only received bandaid solutions to the actual problem. It wasn't until she turned to naturopaths and herbalists that she discovered that the problem was within.
