Most people diagnosed with breast cancer will never have a breast cancer recurrence. However, everyone who's had breast cancer is at risk of recurrence. Today's guest is Nikki Panico, the Executive Director of Susan G. Komen Wisconsin. Nikki is unfortunately no stranger to breast cancer. Her mother and aunt both died from the disease 14 years ago, the same year that Nikki was diagnosed for the first time. Now, she is dealing with a second diagnosis, despite undergoing a double mastectomy and 5 years of hormone treatment and having no evidence of disease for over a decade. Nikki is here today to share the physical symptom that led her back to her doctor and how she is feeling amidst this new fight.
In this podcast episode, Casie Ludemann interviews her friend Ashley, who shares her experience of being diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 31. Despite the physical limitations and the mental toll, Ashley remained determined to stay active and maintain her fitness. She found support from a fitness coach and gradually worked her way back to exercising. Ashley's story highlights the importance of physical and mental resilience in overcoming cancer. In this conversation, Ashlee McNicholas and Casie Ludemann discuss Ashlee's experience with breast cancer and the importance of health and fitness in her recovery. THE ZOOMER SQUAD: A ‘LONGEVITY-OPTIMIZED' DIET COULD INCREASE LIFE EXPECTANCY UP TO 10 YEARS, STUDY SUGGESTS Libby Znaimer is joined by Bob Richardson, Public Affairs Consultant, Rudy Buttignol, President of CARP and John Wright, Executive Vice President of Maru Public Opinion. The Zoomer Squad panel discusses a new study that suggests a ‘longevity-optimized' diet could add 10 years to your life. Then, we move to the ever-relevant topic of terrible Toronto traffic. And it's been a year since vehicles were banned from entering High Park, has it been beneficial? UNLESS YOU HAVE A GENE VARIANT, DOUBLE MASTECTOMY HAS NO SURVIVAL ADVANTAGE Libby Znaimer is now joined by Dr. Ellen Warner, Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto and a staff medical oncologist at the Odette Cancer Centre at Sunnybrook, and Dr. Eileen Rakovitch, Professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at UofT and the Cancer Program Director of Research at Sunnybrook. A study in JAMA Oncology finds that removing the unaffected breast does not improve survival rates for breast cancer patients. Researchers analyzed data from more than 661,000 women and found that those who underwent a lumpectomy or single mastectomy had similar survival outcomes to those who opted for a double mastectomy. CANADIAN OLYMPIC COMMITTEE APPEALS SIX-POINT OLYMPIC SOCCER DEDUCTION Libby Znaimer is now joined by Sean Fitzgerald, Senior National Writer at The Athletic and Wally (Walter) Rigobon, Host of the Naz and Wally Sports hour on Zoomer Radio. The plot thickens in the drone spying scandal which led to a six point deduction for the Canadian women's Olympic soccer team and the banning of three coaches for one year each after a staffer was caught using a drone to spy on the New Zealand team's practices. Now Canada is appealing the scoring penalty on the grounds that it unfairly punishes the athletes for actions they had no part in. Meantime, the women's soccer team has pulled off two victories that put it back to zero.

Rachel Evans made one of the most difficult choices a woman could make. She chose to undergo a mastectomy due to a positive BRCA1 gene mutation. During this episode, Dorothy and Rachel talk about the emotional and physical challenges of the surgery and the impact it had on her femininity and ability to breastfeed. Rachel emphasizes the importance of research and information for women considering reconstruction after a mastectomy. And she opens up about the support she received from her husband, who is also a cancer survivor, and her hope for her children to remain positive and informed about their own health. Key Questions Answered 1.) How can having a family history of breast cancer and a positive BRCA1 gene mutation lead to difficult decisions about preventive measures like mastectomy? 2.) How can reconstruction after a mastectomy have emotional and physical challenges? 3.) What does support from loved ones, like Rachel's husband, do for someone who just underwent a double mastectomy? 4.) Why is maintaining a positive attitude and staying informed about screening and available resources important to individuals facing a high risk of breast cancer? “What I had been taught online and in high school was that this is actually a legitimate thought to have: Okay, maybe I should have been a gay man, maybe I'm trans.”As a teenager, Laura Becker lived in an abusive household and suffered from depression, social anxiety, and substance addiction. She became convinced that transitioning would cure her of her trauma.“It wasn't framed to me as queer theory. When I was in middle school, like 14, it was framed as social justice. ... And I latched on to that immediately,” says Ms. Becker.By age 19, she had come out as a transgender gay man using they/them pronouns and was prescribed cross-sex hormones after a one-hour consultation with a gender clinician. One year later, she had both of her breasts removed. Today, at 26 years old, she regrets those decisions.“How do I exist as a female when I've mutilated my body? ... Like, what do I do now, because that didn't work out? I didn't transcend my body. I didn't transcend the trauma,” says Ms. Becker. “I take responsibility for my delusions, but I don't take responsibility for the medical neglect and the medical malpractice that occurred.”Laura Becker is now an advocate for detransitioners. She considers herself “pro-human” and encourages practicing “radical acceptance” of the “necessary imperfections” that we are all born with.“If we accept the burden of being alive, we must accept that there are necessary imperfections,” says Ms. Becker.Views expressed in this video are opinions of the host and the guest, and do not necessarily reflect the views of The Epoch Times.

Today's episode features a story by one of our favorite students, Margery Berger. She has been taking classes with us since way before the pandemic. Margery has told stories on our podcast twice before. Episode 46: An Object Is not Just an Object aired in 2018 features a really compelling story about Margery's obsession with her scale. On Episode 95: What Did It Take to Finally Get Published? Margery told a story about the time her boyfriend said she has ugly hands. That episode is great because we talked to Margery about what holds her back. Margery submitted this story to the Huffington Post and editor Noah Michelson (@NoahMichelson on Twitter) picked it up. Her story is called, I Hated My Breasts and Was Afraid to Show Them to Dates. Here's What Happened When I Did.We also bring you an interview with Noah Michelson who is the head of HuffPost personal and the host of "D Is For Desire," HuffPost's love and sex podcast. Noah gave Margery this note: “What would someone who didn't have your experience learn from reading your story?” Because of Noah Michelson, we're thinking about stories in a new way. Jennifer DeLuca, owner of BodyTonic Pilates Gymnasium in Brooklyn, NY. Jennifer began her Pilates life in 1985 at the esteemed High School for the Performing Arts in New York City. Part of the curriculum was a semester of the Pilates Mat under the tutelage of Nancy Butler. Not exactly wowed by Pilates, Jennifer couldn't have anticipated how her love of dance and movement would intersect with the Pilates method. Joe Pilates said, "A healthy body is your birthright,” but his quote would be tested when Jennifer discovered a lump in her breast and was diagnosed with breast cancer in July of 2020. Learning she had the BRCA gene, Jennifer made the hard decision to have a double mastectomy. So began her journey of isolation, surgeries and chemotherapy. She credits the support of her staff, clients and her own Pilates practice for helping her return to health.Today, Jennifer has no known cancer and she and her business, BodyTonic are thriving. For those who are dealing with any kind of health issue, you may find this interview very inspiring. Darina revisits Brock's home studio to shoot a new series and record a face to face episode. Darina chats to Brock about her experiences with breast cancer in 2019, juggling this with the birth of her second child, overcoming these challenges, to find in January that it had returned. An incredibly humbling listen from a person who has set up a charity to help others and takes each day with a smile to inspire, educate and assist others with stage 4 cancer.
On this week's episode, Nicole and Alanna are joined by Leslie Jacobs Toole, a local Cincinnati momma with a story to tell. She had actually followed Alanna for a while on social media and once she learned of GWGP, she reached out to share her BRCA Gene story with the gals. Being a topic both Alanna and Nicole were not very familiar with, it was a no-brainer to have her on the show. In this episode, Leslie shares with us about her long family history with breast cancer - including her mother, who was diagnosed with breast cancer at the young age of 34. After witnessing her mother's suffering, she recognized the very real possibility she could have the BRCA Gene and also develop cancer like her mother. Against her mother's blessing, Leslie got tested - and the test came back positive. Then, in 2012 at the age of 24, she took her own health into her hands and got a double mastectomy. We were so blessed that Leslie felt comfortable enough to share the vulnerable details of how cancer and BRCA has affected her life - and we think others who are in a similar position will feel comforted and seen by her kind testimony - including how neglecting her emotional healing led her down a path that eventually led to her sobriety (7 years now!) If your family has been touched by breast cancer and you're curious about the BRCA gene, then this is a wonderful conversation that you absolutely won't want to miss!
