Janaka Stucky is a mystic poet, performer, and founding editor of the award-winning press Black Ocean. He’s here to talk about his latest book of poetry, Ascend Ascend, recently released by Jack White’s publishing imprint, Third Man Books. Ascend Ascend was written over the course of twenty days, coming in and out of trance states brought on by intermittent fasting and somatic rituals while Janaka secluded himself  in the tower of a 100-year-old church. The book is rooted in the Jewish mystical tradition of merkabah literature, chronicling an ascent up the kabbalistic sefirot. Janaka noted in his description of the book that traditional merkabah prose tends to be rather dry and focused on preparations for the journey while sort of avoiding descriptions of the experience itself. But Ascend Ascend skirts that norm and Janaka instead has chosen to document the entire journey, which he describes as the ecstatic destruction of the self. Jeremy Johnson is the author of Seeing Through the World: Jean Gebser and Integral Consciousness. Seeing Through the World introduces the reader to the work of German-Swiss philosopher, poet, and intellectual mystic Jean Gebser. Writing in the mid-20th century during a period of intense cultural transformation and crisis in Europe, Gebser intuited a series of mutational leaps in the history of human consciousness, the latest of which emerging was the "integral" structure, marked by the presence of a concept Gebser called time-freedom. Jeremy says that Gebser's structures of consciousness are as significant an ontological insight as Carl Jung's "reality of the psyche." Yet, until now, very little secondary literature has been available in the English-speaking world as it relates to Gebser and his work. And, until now, very few podcasts have been recorded about Gebser and his work, but that is why Jeremy is here: to guide us through these structures and to show us how this integral structure of consciousness is a means of divination, a crystal ball we can scry with to further illuminate what it is about our current age that seems so damn different. Welcome to part two - let’s call it P2 - of a continuing conversation with blogger Recluse. This one is long overdue, which is my fault not scheduling it sooner. Recluse blogs at visupview.blogspot.com, where he explores topics such as mind control, deep politics, the occult, the supernatural, high weirdness and Forteana in all of its fucked-up forms. This chat builds off our chat from last June, which we recap at the start of our conversation so I won’t repeat all that here, but this is about one of the lesser known and lesser discussed sources of power in times both past and present. We started with the Knights of Malta and now we’re spiraling out into some other related groups and their ties to governments, organized religions, banks, multinational corporations, intelligence agencies, killers-for-hire and mafiosos across the world. This is very much still table-setting, just another information dump, but it is chapter two of a story that brings together the church’s historical interest in the occult, population control and political subversion. It is, as Recluse has called it, a strange and terrible journey into the heart of the deep state. The Modern Hermeticist himself in the house. Dan Attrell is here to talk all about translating one of the preeminent texts, maybe the preeminent text, in the history of Western esotericism: the Picatrix. The Picatrix is perhaps the premiere text written on the subject of astrological magic - a manual for constructing talismans, mixing magical compounds, summoning planetary spirits, and determining astrological conditions. Originally composed in Arabic around the 11th century, it was then translated into Latin in the 13th century, and it is that Latin translation that Dan and his co-translator David Porecca have worked to produce this new English version, which offers important insights not only into occult practices and beliefs but also into the transmission of magical ideas from antiquity to the present. Dan is an historian, classicist, philosopher, and musician. He has a Bachelor of Arts in History and Classical Studies, a Masters in Ancient Mediterranean Cultures from the University of Waterloo with a thesis on shamanic motifs in the ecstatic mystery rites of Attis and Cybele. He’s also completed a Post-Baccalaureate in Classics at UCLA, focusing on the translation of ancient Greek and Latin texts. And he is currently at the University of Waterloo doing his PhD in History on Renaissance Hermeticism/Platonic Orientalism, Medieval religion, and science. Hopefully by now you’ve heard the last episode with Gordon White and Jay Springett, because it is a great companion piece to the conversation you’re about to hear with our guest, Dr. Kasper Opstrup. Kasper is a writer and researcher of what he calls radical culture, specializing in concatenations of art and literature, radical politics, and occultism as counterculture and underground phenomenon. Kasper published his PhD in book form back in November 2017. It’s called The Way Out: Invisible Insurrections and Radical Imaginaries in the UK Underground 1961-1991. His book charts a hidden history of experiments with cultural engineering, with the hopes of expanding current discussions of art, media, politics, radical education and the occult revival. Along the way, we encounter a series of figures – including William Burroughs, Brion Gysin, Genesis P-Orridge and Alexander Trocchi – all of whom blurred the lines between inner and outer, the invisible and the material. We’ve got a really cool episode here with Gordon White and Jay Springett. Most of you know Gordon. He’s been here before, back in episode 66, and he’s the man behind the magic at the Rune Soup blog and podcast. Just when you thought it was safe to turn on the ol’ self-grappling show, we’re venturing back into the dark side of occultism with Jasun Horsley. Jasun Horsley is the author of The Vice of Kings: How Socialism, Occultism and the Sexual Revolution Engineered a Culture of Abuse. Jeff Nixa is a shamanic practitioner, teacher and author of The Lost Art of Heart Navigation: A Modern Shaman’s Field Manual. It’s the last show of 2018, and this year-end show has somehow developed a theme of what we call in my hood, real talk. Last year I chatted with a man named Gilbert Bates about love, the three levels of consciousness, primal pain and primal therapy, which got a tremendous response. So with that in mind we return to the subject of love to close out the Gregorian calendar year that has been 2018. Our guest for this one is Dr. Armin Zahdeh, who published a book in 2017 called The Forgotten Art of Love: What Love Means and Why It Matters. Armin is a cardiologist and professor at Johns Hopkins University. He has authored more than 100 scientific articles and is an editor of scholarly books in medicine. Besides medicine, he has a strong interest in philosophy with a particular focus on mending its ideas with concepts from biology and sciences. In the book, Armin revisits psychologist Erich Fromm’s The Art of Loving and examines love through the lenses of biology, philosophy, history, religion, sociology, and economics to fill in critical voids in Fromm’s classic work and to provide a contemporary understanding of love and a look at its role in every aspect of human existence. There’s a lot packed into this conversation, including love as a religion, love’s similarity to creativity, what Armin thinks of polygamy and so much more. Just a raw, honest chat about love. I even said during the chat this is nothing that groundbreaking, and it really isn’t, but that’s what I like about it. It’s just real talk about the one subject that seems to continue to elude us both individually and collectively. Especially collectively. Quite a different experience this time around. Katy Bohinc is back in the house. She was our guest in episode 71, talking about her previous book of poetry Trinity Star Trinity. She’s got a new book of poetry out now called Scorpio, which has garnered some really nice press recently. I think the poems mimic the persona of the astrological sign of Scorpio, the traits and characteristics present in those of us born from October 23 to November 21. Equal parts dramatic, nostalgic and erotic, but with a throughline of that elusive L word that you hear so much about. Our guest this time around is Dr. Kristen Gallerneaux, an artist, curator and sonic researcher with a Ph.D. in Art Practice & Media History, an MA in Folklore and an MFA in Art. She is also the Curator of Communication and Information Technology at The Henry Ford Museum in Detroit, Michigan, where she continues to build upon one of the largest historical technology collections in North America. But it is Kristen’s recent book High Static, Dead Lines that forms the basis for our conversation. This book has been described as “a literary mixtape that explores the entwined boundaries between sound, material culture, landscape and esoteric belief.” The book contains essays and fictocritical interludes are arranged to evoke a network of ley lines for the “sonic spectre” to travel through—a hypothetical presence that manifests itself as an invisible layer of noise alongside the conventional histories of technological artifacts. Stefan Kiesbye is the author of the recently released novel Berlingeles, a dystopian cyberpunk story that conjures up names like William Gibson, Philip K Dick, Franz Kafka and the television series Black Mirror. Stefan teaches creative writing at Sonoma State University in Northern California and Berlingeles is his sixth novel. It’s set in a future Los Angeles that has been walled in, much like Berlin back in the day, and follows the stories of Gaz, a rising member of the city’s most notorious street gang, and a 96-year-old man known only by the letter K.   Here’s a line from the synopsis of the book: “Seeking a way out of this hellish maze of sweeping slums, waves of violence, and little hope, Gaz might just have found his path to salvation, while the underworld hangs on the prophecies of blind prophet Gerut, and the rest of the lost city still smolders in the ashes of a civil war.” And a story like that, with themes like this, combined with Stefan’s background, made for quite the chat, so hopefully you take something positive from this. Happy Halloween or Samhain or Day of the Dead or whatever you may be celebrating this time of year. And we have a show that’s apropos this time around. Dacre Stoker and JD Barker are in the house. They are the co-authors of the recently released novel Dracul, the official Stoker-family endorsed prequel to the original Dracula story. Very cool, very excited to have them here for our annual Halloween episode. As you will hear in the chat, Dacre is the great grand-nephew of Bram Stoker, the author of that original Dracula story. Dacre is a former teacher and athletics coach; he even coached for Canada during the Olympics. But he’s made the transition to full-time writer and speaker. He gives presentations about Bram and Dracula, takes folks on tours of sites related to the Dracula mythos as well as the real-life inspiration for the character, Vlad the Impaler. And, along with his wife, manages the Bram Stoker Estate. JD is an international best-selling author whose work has been broadly described as suspense thrillers, often incorporating elements of horror, crime, mystery, science fiction and the supernatural. His first novel Forsaken was nominated for a Bram Stoker Award for Best Debut Novel and won a handful of others including a New Apple Medalist Award. Any occult fans out there would definitely enjoy that novel. And that Bram Stoker nomination is what led to this Dracul collaboration. So let’s close our eyes and hope that this vampire thing is just imagination, but something tells me sooner or later you’ll hear that creature creepin’ up behind. You won’t find too many people who work in and around paranormalia like our guest this time around. His name is Joshua Cutchin, and he’s the author of the recently released Thieves in the Night: A Brief History of Supernatural Child Abductions. Thieves in the Night deals with complex and delicate issues pertaining to human sexuality, reproduction, mental health, and gender, with a particular focus on the Faery Faith and the parallels to UFO and extraterrestrial abduction experiences. And as Josh himself notes in his intro to the book, this should be treated as a thought experiment and launching point for further discussion and debate of the paranormal, rather than objective truths. I remember the first time I sat down and watched Night of the Living Dead. I was 16 years old, and I rented the VHS tape, no joke, from my local video store. Around this time of year. And I was blown away by the aesthetic of the film, the black and white, the social commentary, and what I would later come to know as the zombie motif in fiction. And I’ve been - not obsessed - but heavily interested in this motif since then. And I’ve been looking for someone to chat with about it for two years now. Because not only is the zombie an integral part of horror fiction and greater pop culture, it’s an integral part for an entire sociopolitical and religious structure that emanates in Haiti. You wouldn’t know that if all you know about the zombie is from George Romero films or Walking Dead comic books. Thankfully, our guest this time, Dr John Cussans, is in the house to dig deep into the history of the zombie and tell us about something he calls the zombie complex. John is an artist, writer and educator based in London with an academic background in art history and theory, and cultural history. His work is informed by critical re-evaluations of anthropological theory in the mid 20th century, and investigates patterns of theoretical and practical convergence between contemporary art, philosophy, psychology, social movements and popular culture from a post-colonial and anti-imperialist perspective. So imagine my delight when that exact book arrived unexpectedly on my doorstep one day. And imagine my further delight to see Judika Illes’ name on the front cover. Because, even if you’re not that into the occult, if you don’t know much about the people who write in this genre, Judika’s name is one you’ve seen if you’ve wandered through any bookstore. Our guest this time around is Aidan Wachter, talismanic jewelry maker and author of the recently released “Six Ways: Approaches & Entries for Practical Magick”, which is the basis for our conversation here today. This book really struck me in some feel spots as I was reading through it, and you will hear a bit about why and how it did that. Six Ways is a handbook of practical sorcery and magic, as Aidan knows and works it. He says that, “Magic and sorcery have many definitions, and will have many more as we move as a species forward through time. The basic idea is that there are ways of being and interacting in the world that allow for certain kinds of communication, the production of change on both internal and external levels, and the development of what could be called 'special skills and talents'. These are psychic powers or arts, in the old usage of the word: meaning 'relative to the soul, spirit, mind'. These arts of soul, spirit, and mind come down to us in various ways. They have recently collaborated on a project called The Sibyls Oraculum: Oracle of the Black Doves of Africa, which is a system of divination inspired by the Libyan Sibyls, the African prophetesses of the classical world. The deck was created by Tayannah, a tarot reader and researcher of religion, esoterica, and mysticism, and drawn by Katelan, a visual artist, writer, and occultist who specializes in vintage style mixed media art and photography. This contemporary oracle pays homage to the oft forgotten African founding mothers of the sibylline traditions. Drawing on both the African and the Classical traditions, the card art is in a style reminiscent of the Libyan mosaics popular in the 1st century B.C.E. And in the deck’s accompanying guidebook, Tayannah details how to consult the oracle, providing in-depth write-ups about the meaning of each of the 44 cards and the symbolic language represented by each card’s imagery. There’s also a history of the Sibyls of the ancient world and an exploration of the continuing Sibyl tradition in North Africa today. But the framework for our conversation here comes from the true intention of the deck, which is to directly address the spiritual lessons underlying the seeker’s question, and to facilitate self-examination and decision-making, and help improve the likelihood of success and broaden the perspective of the situation. If you’ve been here before you know we have always questioned authority, and that doesn’t just extend to the usual suspects - ya know, the government, the church, the corporations. We questions all kinds of authority. And our guest this time around has been doing exactly that, but he’s taken it a step further and turned his attention towards authorities who are part of the occulture, for lack of a better term. His name is Jasun Horsley and he’s recently published a book called Prisoner of Infinity: UFOs, Social Engineering & the Psychology of Fragmentation. And when I first came across it that title immediately hooked me and then when I read the synopsis, I sat back in my chair and said, “Well, I have to read this.” In addition to this book, Jasun has authored seven previous books with another one coming in early 2019 that builds on his work from Prisoner of Infinity. Jasun also hosts his own podcast called The Liminalist, and has a blog called Auticulture, which is a portmanteau of autism and culture. The autism portion of that is an interesting angle, and we do talk a bit about that right up front here. Really, this is one of the more interesting pieces of research I’ve read, and Jasun is one of the more interesting people I’ve met since I’ve started doing this. This conversation will ruffle some feathers. And his book will ruffle some feathers (and already has). There’s a Patreon extension here too, another 30 minutes.
