Welcome to a very special episode of Backstage Pass. We recently attended the National Alliance for Musical Theatre's 37th Annual Festival of New Musicals in New York City, and have created a podcast experience that will make you feel like you're right there with us! Each year, the NAMT festival shares 45 minute preview performances of 8 new musicals in development. This episode features conversations with NAMT's New Works Director Frankie Dailey, and 4 of the 8 shows in this year's festival: FINN by Chris Nee, Chris Dimond, & Michael Kooman, Love is Dead by Brett Ryback and Jeff Lupino-Esposito, Soft Magical Tofu Boy(s) by Kevin Wong and Particle by Selda Sahin, Autumn Reeser and Derek Gregor. Tune in next week to hear the other 4 shows! We also share demo recordings of a song from each of these musicals so you can get a taste of the music from each show. From FINN you'll hear “Sparkle and Shine” performed by Zachary Noah Piser. From Love is Dead you'll hear “Fully Formed” performed by Lana McKissack. We also interviewed Sonya Hayden and Matthew Lowy who were featured in NAMT's College Road Trip program, which shines a spotlight on university theatre programs that develop new musicals. Their musical, Taking Off! was recently developed at Michigan State University and an excerpt of the show was performed at the Festival of New Musicals. You can hear their song, “Ready for the World” at the end of the episode performed by Sonya Hayden. Check out Part 2 next week to hear interviews with the other NAMT writers, as well as more bonus content from musical theatre creators who were present at the festival. In this powerful episode, Inclusion Catalyst sits down with Professor Corinna Lain, legal scholar and author of the forthcoming book Secrets of the Killing State, to examine the realities behind lethal injection in the United States. Lain's work exposes a system shrouded in secrecy, built on medical misconception, and sustained by public misunderstanding. Corinna Lain's research confronts the core question: Why are states so bad at lethal injection? What emerges is a disturbing truth: the method widely perceived as humane is structurally designed to hide pain, avoid accountability, and preserve the political palatability of the death penalty. Key Themes & Insights Lethal Injection as Hidden Torture The standard three-drug protocol uses a paralytic that freezes the face and body, masking the agony inflicted by potassium chloride. Autopsies routinely show multiple puncture wounds, evidence of repeated failed IV attempts by unqualified staff. Some executions have lasted hours, including the three-hour execution of Joe Nathan James. State Secrecy and Systemic Malpractice Many executions are carried out by non-medical prison staff, not trained clinicians States source drugs from unqualified vendors, including individuals running non-pharmaceutical businesses. Protocols are frequently violated: Curtains raised too early. Media witnesses banned. IV insertions hidden from public view. Prisoners' fingers are often taped down to prevent signaling pain. The Making of the Book Lain felt spiritually called to document these abuses and persisted through a year of publisher rejections. A fortuitous meeting led to a contract with NYU Press, which will release the book Easter 2025. The manuscript is extensively documented, with 1,000+ endnotes drawn from depositions, investigative journalism, and insider accounts. The 80-Day National Book Tour Lain traveled 12,000 miles across 23 states, taking unpaid leave to bring public attention to the issue. Reception has been overwhelmingly positive — and notably, no state official has challenged her findings. Why Lethal Injection Persists Lain argues its primary function is aesthetic: to make state killing appear peaceful, preserving public support. The book reframes the death penalty debate from “Does the prisoner deserve to die?” to “Does the state deserve the power to kill?” Many people on death row undergo profound personal transformation; the state may be, in Lain's words, “killing its Pauls.” This episode is produced in partnership with the Georgia Interfaith Public Policy Center.

Pastor Brad sites that Paul was away of his impending death, and still was joyful in praising the Lord.

The Founder of The Timothy Initiative, David Nelms, talks with Wayne Shepherd about this extensive disciple-making ministry. (click for more...)Website: https://ttiglobal.orgThe interview with Pastor David Nelms, founder of The Timothy Initiative (TTI), centers on his mission to plant churches among unreached people groups worldwide. Nelms explains that TTI focuses on areas with few or no churches—primarily Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, and animist regions—and has helped establish churches among more than 1,700 ethnic groups. He describes how the ministry began after witnessing an Asian village with no Christian presence, leading his church to start 7,000 house fellowships by removing traditional barriers such as salaries, sanctuaries, and seminaries. TTI's model emphasizes discipleship multiplication based on 2 Timothy 2:2—training believers (“Pauls”) to mentor others (“Timothys” and “Tituses”) who then start new fellowships. Now operating in over 45 countries and training more than 200,000 Timothys, TTI also uses mapping technology to identify unreached villages and partners globally through a “Coalition of the Willing.” Nelms shares dramatic transformation stories, such as men delivered from bondage through the gospel, and concludes by urging believers to pray, give, and make disciples both locally and globally. In this episode, we continue our conversation with Matt Herrero, Joel Chapman, Weston Gaylord, Ken Savage, and Jessia Hoffman about their musical GRAVITY: A Newtonian Musical. When physics prodigy Sophie is accidentally catapulted back in time, her meet-cute with 23 year-old Isaac Newton prevents him from discovering gravity—trapping Sophie in 1666. To return home, Sophie must restore history and navigate the Enlightenment, where Natural Philosophers are the pop stars of their day. Along the way, she encounters historical luminaries such as up-and-comer Edmond Halley, Isaac's rival Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz, and the unknown author Margaret Cavendish, who is embroiled in her own quest for fame and scientific recognition. GRAVITY is a hilarious romantic comedy, smashing together madcap time travel mayhem and delightfully remixed history. This episode features the songs, “Let Us Enlighten You”, performed by Marcus Jamal Paige, Dave Abrams, Nathaniel Rothrock, and Weston Gaylord, as well as “In My Own Time” performed by Taylor Iman Jones and Matt Herrero. "Final Words"Pastor James Leads us from 1 Timothy 6:3-21This week's sermon closes out 1 Timothy. This week pastor James leads on Pauls final words to Timothy in Ephesus, closeing out on what to do about false teachers within the church. He also urges to stray from the love of money and resources, as it is the root of all evil and that the resources themselves are put to better use in service of the Lord. That investing in his kingdom, is the best way to everlasting life, and an everlasting legacy.YouTube Link: https://youtu.be/N7zP3Q38MHQThank you so much for joining us today! The Rev. Sarah Phelps preaches on the twenty-first Sunday after Pentecost.
John 1:1-18 The Word The Communion of God (vv. 15) His deity His community His creativity His majesty The Flesh The Incarnation of God (vv. 613) His witness His rejection His reception The Glory The Revelation of God (vv. 14- 18) His grandeur His glory His grace More to Consider Most of the NT creeds are found in the writings of Paul and most were likely passed along in the churches orally before and during Pauls ministry. The NT creeds and traditions predate the NT writings themselves and focus generally on Jesus identity, activity, and commands, but mostly on his death and resurrection that was central to the core message of the earliest churches. The affirmations in these creeds and traditions reflect the earliest Christian beliefs and practices and focus on Jesus ministry and teachings, death and resurrection by the mid AD. 30s. Lee Martin McDonald The early Christian creeds leave an essential question for modern-day Christians: Does this evidence of the resurrection inspire you as it did first-century Christians? When you hear that Jesus rose from the dead, do you want to share the good news about Jesus with others? We must continue to share our common belief in the risen Jesus so we can remember him, praise him, and be stirred to share him with others. Dr. Bob Martin III He began His ministry by being hungry, yet He is the Bread of Life. Jesus ended His earthly ministry by being thirsty, yet He is the Living Water. Jesus was weary, yet He is our rest. Jesus paid tribute, yet He is the King. Jesus was accused of having a demon, yet He cast out demons. Jesus wept, yet He wipes away our tears. Jesus was sold for thirty pieces of silver, yet He redeemed the world. Jesus was brought as a lamb to the slaughter, yet He is the Good Shepherd. Jesus died, yet by His death He destroyed the power of death. Gregory of Nazianzus, A.D. 381.

The Rev. Robert Fruehwirth preaches on the twentieth Sunday after Pentecost.
1 Corinthians 10:23-33 The Principle of Sacred Liberty (vv. 23-24) Libertys reality Libertys range Libertys root (Psalm 24) The Exercise of Sacred Liberty (vv. 25-30) A clear conscience A careful compassion A considered conduct The Goal of Sacred Liberty (vv. 31-33) The glory of God The gospel of Christ More to Consider "Why should my strong conscience be judged by a brother's weak conscience? And what damage can there be in meat for which I have given thanks?" The answer is: regardless of what we do, be it eating or drinking, we must do it for God's glory and not just to please ourselves. Humanly speaking, it may seem wrong for a strong Christian to bow to a weaker brother, but this is what glorifies God. Making that weaker brother stumble into sin would disgrace the church and the name of Christ. There are only three groups of people in the world: the Jews, the Gentiles, and the church. God expects the church to seek to win Jews and Gentiles to the Lord. If a Christian lives to win souls, these questions about conduct will take care of themselves. It is the idle Christian, the carnal Christian, who frets over how far he can get involved with the world. When believers live to build the church and win the lost, they put first things first and glorify the name of Christ. Warren W. Wiersbe The principle which summarized Pauls response to the question of eating food offered as a pagan sacrifice was an application of the command to love God and neighbors. Christian behavior should be for the glory of God. Also it should build up the church of God by leading some to new birth (v. 33b) and others to maturity in the process of salvation (justification, sanctification, glorification; cf. 1:30). Christians should avoid behavior that would cause otherswhether Jews (cf. 9:20), Greeks (cf. 9:21), or the church of God to stumble (lit., fall; cf. 10:12). Lowery, D. K. (1985). 1 Corinthians. In J. Congratulate someone, express pride, summarize a story & word formation: ‑lich & ‑isch. Paul has the painting! During the war, the lady and her husband were secretly listening to forbidden news - right in front of the painting (and he proposed to her there). It was the memories of her husband that she didn't want to lose. So she didn't want to give it away, even though she doesn't quite like it. It was also in front of this painting that he told her he wants to surrender. That's why she was so sure. Pauls work and blog are going well. He's considering writing a book, given that many people voted for it. But it still bothers him that he doesn't know why Laura took Fritz's side. Mom calls: She is proud of him. And of his father because he's finally doing a gambling/gaming addiction therapy. Paul and his friends plan to celebrate. They change the date for Laura since she is busy with somehing very important that came up. She makes a secret of what this important thing is. And she doesn't want to reveal it until Saturday... Laura was overly interested in the blog article about Fritz, didn't want Paul to report him even though she dislikes him, and now it's even a secret what she's busy with on Friday. In this episode we continue our conversation with Karl Amundson and Emily Fink about their new musical: Falling Forward. Falling Forward is about Meghan, a queer 27-year-old sculpture artist who is leaving New York City, moving in with her mom in Michigan and giving up on her artistic aspirations. However, packing her apartment proves to be a noisy affair, as all of Meghan's belongings-- including a Bong, a Self-Help Book, a Vibrator, a Family Portrait, a smart-device, and more—come to life, forcing Meghan to reckon with her own role in her terrible-horrible-no-good-very-bad year. Equal parts memory play, fever-dream, generational satire, and coming-of-age story, Falling Forward follows Meghan as she teeters on the brink of change, searching for certainty in her uncertain world. This episode features the songs “When It Falls” performed by Emily Kristen Morris and “Midwestern Life” performed by PJ Adzima. The Apostle Paul wrote a significant portion of the New Testament. There are 27 different books in the New Testament, and Paul is credited with writing about half of them. For the vast majority of Christians, his writings provide extremely practical teachings and examples for us to build upon the single and solid foundation of Jesus Christ. That being said, there are some Christians who believe Paul was an imposter, a self-appointed apostle who was actually diminishing the power of the Gospel of Jesus. What would make someone question the validity of Pauls' writings? It turns out there are several varied reasons for this perspective. The question is, are they legitimate and what do they imply? A major challenge One of several major challenges to Paul's apostleship we confront in this episode is that Paul never listed the Ten Commandments in full. While true, this actually mirrors Jesus' own approach. Neither quoted them entirely but both emphasized their moral essence. Paul affirmed many commandments individually: he quoted the Fifth in Ephesians 6:1–3 and referenced the Sixth, Seventh, Eight and Tenth in Romans 13:9. He also implied the First and Second in Acts 17 and taught truthfulness in Ephesians 4:25, echoing the Ninth. Though he never explicitly cited the Third (against taking God's name in vain), neither did Jesus, although reverence for God's name was clearly implied. Another objection Another objection claims Paul's stance on circumcision contradicts Jesus. A key point about Paul's teaching in Galatians 5 is that he opposed legalism, not circumcision itself. He warned against using rituals for justification, emphasizing that salvation comes through Christ alone. Paul even had Timothy circumcised—not for salvation, but to aid in the ministry work among Jews. Further objections—such as the claim that all churches in the Roman province of Asia rejected Paul (2 Timothy 1:15) or that Revelation 2:2 denounces him can easily be answered by contextual study. Such study reveals that Paul's abandonment was due to shame over his imprisonment, not doctrinal rejection. The denouncing of false apostles in Revelation clearly refers to later imposters, and not Paul himself. Ultimately, Paul's gospel is given to complement Jesus' message, as it is tailored for Gentile audiences unfamiliar with Jewish law. His teachings emphasized love, transformation and Christ-centered righteousness, not ritual observance. Scriptural evidence clearly points to Paul as a faithful apostle, not an imposter.
