Åsikter som uttrycks är skribentens egna.”Jag söker den fråga på vilken människolivet är ett svar.”Så inleder den svenske författaren Willy Kyrklund sin bok Mästaren Ma från 1952.Den märkliga lilla formuleringen har svävat omkring i mina tankar ända sedan jag för första gången läste den för omkring trettio år sedan. Finns det verkligen en fråga på vilken människolivet är ett svar? Hur skulle en sådan fråga i så fall kunna se ut?Och vem skulle ursprungligen haft anledning att ställa den?Det ligger nära till hands att peka mot himlen och tänka: endast en gud kan ställa en så outgrundlig fråga.Å andra sidan tycks själva idén om en frågande gud skava mot bilden av gud som allvetande. Den som redan vet allt har väl ingen anledning att fråga efter något.Ett vackert försök att förstå relationen mellan den frågande guden och den skapade människan finner vi hos den florentinske 1400-talstänkaren Giovanni Pico della Mirandola. Här framträder nämligen människan just som ett svar på en saknad, som ett uttryck för en brist i den Allsmäktiges hjärta. Efter att Gud Fader frambringat alla ting och djur i vår värld insåg han nämligen att någonting väsentligt saknades. Som om det fanns ett inre tomrum i Varat självt. När den Outgrundlige begrundade denna tomhet – och som alla vet betyder ordet begrunda just att ställa sig frågor – kom han strax på svaret: det är människan som fattas!Världsalltet, tänkte gud, behöver ytterligare ett kreatur, en varelse som är utrustad med ett medvetande som kan vittna om allt det jag har skapat. En varelse som tillsammans med mig kan förundras och glädjas över skapelsen. Så kom människan att bli svaret på Guds längtan efter att bli sedd och beundrad. Människan, sålunda, som det förkroppsligade svaret på gudomens oförmåga att stå ut med sin eviga ensamhet.Pico della Mirandola är inte ensam om sina tankar. Andra har följt i hans fotspår och kommit fram till liknande slutsatser. Några av dem har gått så långt att de hävdar att det först är genom människan som Gud kan bli fullt medveten om sig själv. Gud speglar sig, så att säga, i den lilla människovarelsens strävan efter att begripa och sätta ord på den värld som hon slungats ut i. Det började ganska så blygsamt, men sedan tog det fart på allvar. Med stjärnkikare och spektroskopi utforskar hon den oändliga rymden. Med skalpeller och röntgenstrålar blottlägger hon tålmodigt och systematiskt sitt eget väsen.”Gud har väntat i sextusen år på ett vittne”, förklarade den tyske astronomen Johannes Kepler i början av den naturvetenskapliga revolutionen.Utan människan, instämde författaren Denis Diderot drygt hundra år senare, skulle världsalltet vara tomt och stilla. Om människorna ”blev bannlysta från jordens yta skulle naturens föränderliga och sublima skådespel inte vara mer än en scen av ödslighet och tystnad”. Från att ingenting ha varit – ett lätt och naivt byte för naturens nyckfulla makter – har människan kommit att uppfatta sig som ett slags gud på jorden. Som ett språkrör för det Absoluta, som en inkarnation av den eviga Andens självutforskning.Det finns en fantastisk passage i Hegels verk Logiken, där den tyske filosofen plötsligt anar innebörden av sitt eget filosofiska projekt. Om det verkligen är sant att jag, Hegel, i detta mitt verk faktiskt lyckats frilägga världsalltets djupaste hemligheter – ja, då innebär det ju ingenting mindre än att det inte längre finns någon skillnad mellan mitt eget och guds vetande.Detta hegelska motiv varieras gång på gång hos det tidiga 1800-talets tyska idealister och romantiker. Deras egna tankar förstås som det medium genom vilket det gudalika Världsalltet äntligen får syn på sig självt.Vi står här inför en storslagen omkastning av den gamla rollfördelningen mellan gud och människa, mellan skapare och skapad. Är människan verkligen strikt underordnad gud – om det nu är människan som tänker, talar och skriver fram gudens självmedvetande? Om det är människan som räddar guden från dennes dystra isolering och stumhet? Om människan på egen hand, utan guds hjälp, kan se och gripa världen ur evighetens synvinkel?”Gud är död – och det är vi som har dödat honom!” Så förtätar Nietzsche, år 1883, den insikt som ibland beskrivs som den moderna existentialismens födelseögonblick.Att Gud är död skulle kunna uppfattas som en utomordentlig befrielse. Men Nietzsche själv är helt på det klara med att guds frånfälle samtidigt öppnar dörren till den mest genomgripande bävan. I samma ögonblick som vi överger Gud blir vi nämligen själva övergivna. Nu är det vi som måste leva våra dagar i kosmisk ensamhet, utan någon yttre instans att spegla oss i och utan löftet om ett liv bortom döden.I samma stund som vi dräper gud förlorar vi samtidigt den fråga – och den saknad – på vilken vi skulle kunna utgöra ett svar. Människan finns nu bara till – utan att någon någonsin har frågat efter henne.Men kanske är allt detta bara vidlyftiga spekulationer. Ibland misstänker jag faktiskt att Willy Kyrklunds sökande efter den stora frågan bara är en av alla de snaror som han älskar att lägga ut till sina läsare. Kanske vill han bara locka upp oss på den spindelvävsstege vi så gärna reser mot himlen – för att sedan, med stötar och skakningar, tvinga ner oss till den jord vi kommer från.Nej, människa, du är ingen gud. Greg Kaminsky discusses how Kabbalah was adopted from Judaism into Christianity, by Giovanni Pico della Mirandola, as well as his spiritual beliefs and practices. Among these, Pico believed in a hierarchy of angels that could be engaged with and emulated by human beings and that, by doing so, we could make ourselves divine.

This week's guest is probably no stranger to you all and he is certainly not to me! Please welcome my friend whose former co-host I had the pleasure to be, Harvard graduate with a Master in Medieval Studies, host and producer of the long-running podcast ‘Occult of Personality', freemason, Buddhist Tantra practitioner and author Greg Kaminsky. Only five months ago Greg published an amazing book called ‘Celestial Intelligences - Angelology, Cabala, and Gnosis: Giovanni Pico della Mirandola's Quest for the Perennial Philosophy'. In this episode Greg and I will be talking not only about the creative process of this book but also exploring the question what it meant and how he as a person and as an author was changed by it. We'll dive deep into the meaning of the written word in the occult sense, the way of contemplation, how knowledge and experience become conveyable and also discuss the choices people in modern society make – partly influenced by technology – and how these choices impact their perception and vice versa. Of course, we're going to talk a lot about the man that Greg's book focuses upon, 15th century philosopher Giovanni Pico della Mirandola and his ‘Oration on the Dignity of Man' and Greg will also shed some light on his motivation to write this very specific book in the first place. Furthermore, we'll touch upon the necessities of correspondences and paraphernalia in practice, talk about different concepts of enlightenment in Eastern and Western traditions and actually try to define Gnosis itself. In this episode we talk once more with researcher H Darrel Rutkin on one of the most, if not the most, relevant figures of early modern anti-astrological discourse: Giovanni Pico Della Mirandola (24 February 1463–17 November 1494). Published posthumously in 1496 his Disputationes adversus astrologiam divinatricem (Arguments Against Judicial Astrology) had a tremendous impact on astrological practice. Pico has been studied by several researchers, among them Darrel, who addressed his work and impact in this PhD thesis and in other publications. In that dialogue, Fonte creates a locus amoenus characterized by a centered garden visited by seven female interlocutors to discuss what options women have to take charge of their lives. The presentation will end by comparing and contrasting Fonte's garden with Giovanni Pico della Mirandola's paradise in his Oration on the Dignity of Man (1486)

W średniowiecznej Europie miało miejsce tajemnicze zjawisko: na przełomie XII i XIII w. żydowskie tradycje ezoteryczne — dotąd przekazywane wyłącznie ustnie i strzeżone przed niepowołanymi uszami — z jakichś powodów zaczęto spisywać w formie traktatów. Giovanni Pico della Mirandola (Pico for short), was the wunderkind of the Renaissance. In 1486, at the age of 23 he proposed to defend 900 theses on religion, philosophy, natural philosophy, and magic against all comers, for which he wrote the Oration on the Dignity of Man, which has been called the “Manifesto of the Renaissance.”Today we are going to talk to Professor Matthew Gaetano about this remarkable figure. Pico was called a great genius, even in his own time. He defend 900 contested theses drawn from the Greeks, Scripture, rabbis, from Persians, and from Islamic scholars into a syncretic drawing together of learning and culture from all across the then-known world.There were also odd aspects of Pico's thought system— he defended magic and mysticism. But his complex life is an inspiration for us moderns today.

It is hard to imagine that almost a thousand years went by during which virtually nobody in the West knew anything about the majority of Greek philosophy. In retrospect, this period has rightly been dubbed the Dark Ages. But all that was about to change when the East and the West met in Florence, Italy in an attempt to heal the rift between the Orthodox and the Catholic churches. Florence at the dawn of the Renaissance was, much like Alexandria a thousand years earlier, a melting pot of cultures and religions. And once again this kind of multicultural environment was exactly what was necessary for the Hermetica to resurface in Western Europe. The Hermetic writings proved an invaluable treasure to the thinkers of the late 15th and early 16th century, providing them with the terminology and the symbols to clothe their inquisitive thoughts about Man, God and the Universe. Two men in particular stand out as having had particular importance in this process; Marcilio Ficino and Giovanni Pico della Mirandola. Both made significant contributions to the development of Western thought; Ficino with his brilliant orations and countless translations of lost works, Pico with his unwavering faith in the human pursuit of knowledge. Both were magi; Ficino invoked the seven Hermetic spheres and clothed their essence in music, Pico sought to prove the divinity of Christ through the Kabbala.
