The Sibyls of ancient Greece and Rome were oracles that divined the future by channeling the god, Apollo. Sibyls were considered to be intermediaries between the mortal world and the divine realm, and their pronouncements were highly regarded by the Greeks. Sibyls were often consulted by individuals, city-states, and rulers seeking guidance on important matters such as warfare, politics, and religion. They were believed to possess deep wisdom and knowledge of the future, and their utterances were typically written down and preserved as sacred texts. For this month's primary source, we hear an amalgam of prophesies as they relate to Cyprus -- specifically a series of ominous predictions of earthquakes and floods predating the infamous 4th century earthquake that levelled parts of Cyprus including Kourion. On Thursday August 15th, 2019 the Hermetic Hour with host Poke Runyon will present a discussion on the ancient "Sibylline Oracles" created, or re-created, in Greco-Roman Alexandria in the first centuries of the common era.These prophetic verses, attributed to the Sibyls, or prophetic priestesses of ancient Greece were actually a hoax, written by Jewish and Christian Gnostics in an attempt to recast the legendary lost prophetic books of ancient Rome to include the Bible and predict Christianity. They were so successful and popular that the early Christian Church approved of them. They were accepted into the Hermetic tradition, along with The Orphic Hymns and the Chaldean Oracles.They became an influence on western magick and Fairy lore. We will refer to Jake Stratton-Kent's summary of the Oracles in "Geosophia" (2010) and Milton Terry's translation 1899. Enter the mysteries of the deeper world by allowing the Sibyl within to awaken. Angela Natividad and I explore The Sibyl, from the classical antiquity to contemporary oracles. Angela and I talked for over two hours, with about the first hour being an intro and the second more on specific Sibyls and bringing this archetype to the present day The Sibyl was an ancient priestess of great prestige in many areas of the Greek and Roman worlds. Their influence continued in Christianity right up to the Renaissance. There were many sibyls, including The Pythia (which was also a title referring to many prophetesses, pictured) and The Sibyl of Cumae. To the ancients, The Sibyllae were the chosen priestesses who held the sacred gift of prophecy. They prophesied the rise of Rome and predicted the birth of the messiah. So powerful were her words that her books were dearly guarded by the Romans. Michelangelo painted her on the Sistine Chapel. There were many other important sibyls throughout the ancient Mediterranean, predicting the rise and fall of empires accurately as well as responding to questions about the details of everyday life. The Sibylline Oracles are a compendium of oracular writings attributed to ancient Sibyls, but more likely heavily adapted by early Christian writers. As an archetype, The Sibyl persists today, from the popularity of astrology and tarot to the mysterious oracles spoken by economists. They have recently collaborated on a project called The Sibyls Oraculum: Oracle of the Black Doves of Africa, which is a system of divination inspired by the Libyan Sibyls, the African prophetesses of the classical world. The deck was created by Tayannah, a tarot reader and researcher of religion, esoterica, and mysticism, and drawn by Katelan, a visual artist, writer, and occultist who specializes in vintage style mixed media art and photography. This contemporary oracle pays homage to the oft forgotten African founding mothers of the sibylline traditions. Drawing on both the African and the Classical traditions, the card art is in a style reminiscent of the Libyan mosaics popular in the 1st century B.C.E. And in the deck’s accompanying guidebook, Tayannah details how to consult the oracle, providing in-depth write-ups about the meaning of each of the 44 cards and the symbolic language represented by each card’s imagery. There’s also a history of the Sibyls of the ancient world and an exploration of the continuing Sibyl tradition in North Africa today. But the framework for our conversation here comes from the true intention of the deck, which is to directly address the spiritual lessons underlying the seeker’s question, and to facilitate self-examination and decision-making, and help improve the likelihood of success and broaden the perspective of the situation. Dr. Marjorie Roth was born in Kenosha, Wisconsin, where she studied music until coming East for graduate school.  She has earned doctoral degrees in Historical Musicology (PhD) and in Flute Performance and Literature (DMA) from the Eastman School of Music.  Following a year in Vienna, Austria, on a Fulbright research grant, Dr. Roth began a full-time appointment at Nazareth College in Rochester, NY, where she is now a full professor of music history and studio flute, and serves as the Director of the Honors Program.  Dr. Roth has presented papers on Renaissance music and on various topics in Esoteric Studies at conferences held in Italy, Egypt, Poland, Iceland, Belgium, Greece, Sicily, and the United States.  She is a regular member of the presenting faculty for Esoteric Quest conferences sponsored by the New York Open Center and has given talks on music at Lily Dale, New York.  In April she will travel to the Sivananda Yoga Ashram in the Bahamas to read a paper on the magical and medicinal properties of the Tarantella.  She will return to Lily Dale in July to present a paper on Sibyls and Sibylline prophecy as part of the Science of Things Spiritual event.

Returning to the show tonight after a long hiatus is Dr. David Hillman with the topic "What Does the Ancient Sibyl Say About Your Vote? Dr. Hillman has been embroiled in some very interesting circumstances of late regarding free speech in universities, or lack there-of, and how speech and artistic expression are under attack by corporate-driven universities and why you should care.  We'll delve beyond the obvious and look at what a University is and why we need them now and what Corporate America is doing to destroy our educational system.  We'll learn about "holy sodomy" and why it might be required learning.  We'll look into the Sibyls of the Vatican Hill, prophets for the Pagan Roman government and why poetry of pirestesses was consulted in a national crisis.  We'll take a closer look at that controversial story of Jesus caught with a naked boy in the Garden the evening before his arrest and what the play Medea teaches us about Catholicism.

I am a woman in all save the body...Therefore am I--a woman--clothed in a man's body that I may be enabled to do the work set before me. "The second case is that of a soul who, having been a woman perhaps many times, has acquired more aptly and readily the higher qualities of womanhood than the lower qualities of manhood... "The third case is that of the backslider, who having nearly attained perfection,--perhaps even touched it,--degrades and soils his white robe, and is put back into the lower form again. These are the common cases; for there are few women who are worthy to be women."
