PAUL THOMAS ANDERSON FILMOGRAPHY MARATHONThere's very little stranger than the transition from adolescence to adulthood... and the fact that maybe it may never happen. Licorice Pizza is one of those 'vibe movies' where you're transported to another era, an earlier time in your life, and a place where maybe your ethics are put on hold temporarily so that you can feel something pretty intenseThe film follows the story of Alana Kane, an adult afraid of losing her youth, and Gary Valentine, a teenager trying to suppress his. They go through the treacherous navigation of first love in the San Fernando Valley, 1973.The boys watch PTA's most recent film, diving in on if they thought the romance was necessary to go in the direction it did, and if it means that you're a freak if you're into this movie.Podcast Instagram: @marathonme_officialPodcast Facebook page: @marathonmeofficalEmail: marathonmepodc@gmail.com

Are you like me and just a little too young to have experienced firsthand some of the retro pop culture you've grown to love? Then I've got five films to help take you back to the 70s and 80s, that weren't made during that time. These films are like me—not quite retro. First, we have It (2017) and It Chapter Two (2019), which deliver a one-two punch of horror and nostalgia. This film adaptation of Stephen King's It moves the setting up to the late 1980s and mid-2010s, modernizing the original story just a bit, but still leaning into the nostalgia of childhood, friendship, and conquering childhood trauma. Next up is 2011's Super 8, written and directed by J. J. Abrams and produced by Steven Spielberg. Set in 1979, a group of kids while making a Super 8 movie accidentally record a train crash and get footage that they shouldn't have seen. It's a wonderful send-up of horror and sci-fi directors, like Spielberg, George Romero, John Carpenter, and Alfred Hitchcock, while also being a poignant exploration of grief. If you need something to lighten the mood after the scariness of the It films and Super 8, you'll enjoy 1998's The Wedding Singer! The tagline for the film is “He's going to party like it's 1985!” and boy, does he ever. Wonderfully silly and surprisingly sincere and romantic, The Wedding Singer is a lot of fun from start to finish. Grab your Aqua Net and enjoy this fun rom-com with the person who wants to grow old with you. Our final selection for our Not Quite Retro movie night is the 2021 Paul Thomas Anderson film, Licorice Pizza. While met with some initial controversy, this is a multi-award nominated and winning film from the writer and director that brought you Magnolia and Boogie Nights. Set in 1973, Licorice Pizza watches our leads, Alana Kane (played by Alana Haim) and Gary Valentine (played by Cooper Hoffman), grow up, figure out life, and fall in love. It's a mythology of early 70s San Fernando Valley legends with an amazing soundtrack, a cast stacked with phenomenal actors, and the band HAIM, as well as their parents. Make a martini, or maybe just grab two cokes, and enjoy the feel-good comedy that is Licorice Pizza. We hope our selections this week take you back to a time in history that you may or may not have experienced firsthand. If you did, do these films accurately capture that time period? Which films do you think capture it best? Thanks for joining us on this trip back to the 70s and 80s in this episode of the Video Store Podcast. Welcome back to Behind Greatness. Our dicussion today is with writer, author, philosopher and Rock & Roll Hall of Famer, Gary Lachman, who joins us from his home in London. Gary grew up in New Jersey and as a young adult he decided to follow his musical curiosities and move to NYC to play and write Rock & Roll. Living in a store-front at 19 in NYC, he spent years writing songs and playing gigs as Gary Valentine until he lived his dreams: co-founding a successful Rock & Roll band, opening for the Rolling Stones, starting his own group The Know and playing with punk legend Iggy Pop. At 28, he retired. Taking his attitude, energy and drive and devoting it to learning, reading and writing – he started writing histories of Hermeticism and the Western Inner Tradition, existentialism, the paranormal, the Occult and the philosophy of consciousness. We discuss the importance and the significance of the Rose and “The All”, our lack of self-remembering, the robot we all live with and the triviality of “everydayness”. We learn from Gary about the taps on his shoulder and about current reconnection with (musical) exploration and living and creating with the lack of preconceptions.   “The promise without the guarantee”. What a treat. Paul Thomas Anderson pays humorous tribute to the 1970s in southern California in this story of a teenage entrepreneur who falls for a clever young woman. The latest film from Paul Thomas Anderson shows the writer-director returning to a favorite place and time: southern California in the 1970s. Boogie Nights in '97, and more recently, Inherent Vice in 2014, celebrated that unusual period in humorous, gently satiric ways. The new movie is called Licorice Pizza, and in some ways, it's Anderson's most outright comic film. In his screen debut, Cooper Hoffman plays 15-year-old aspiring actor Gary Valentine, a high school student in the San Fernando Valley in 1973. He's a goofy red-headed kid, a little overweight, who for some reason has developed amazing self-confidence. He thinks he's going somewhere, and he's full of ideas about how to get there. On the day when class pictures are being taken at the school, he sees a young woman, a photographer's assistant named Alana Kane, played by the similarly named Alana Haim, also in her first film. Gary is immediately love-struck, and decides that Alana is going to be his girlfriend someday, and he quite boldly tells her this. She brushes him off and says she's 25, too old for him, but this awkward yet assertive girl with a wise guy attitude is secretly flattered by Gary's devotion. They do become friends, and work together on Gary's schemes, including one in which he tries to get in on the recent waterbed craze. But the friendship is founded on her stubborn insistence, and eventually his as well, that they're not really a couple at all. Now, one of the characteristics of Anderson's films is that he doesn't care about social proprieties. He likes to makes film about subjects that other people avoid, such as the pornography industry, weird cults, gambling, drugs, you name it. In this case it isn't at all clear to me that Alana is 25. She says she is, but she lives with her parents and sisters, and her father treats her like a teenager. Be that as it may, the director is interested in the dynamic of an absurdly confident boy falling for an older girl. And this is a personal work for him. Cooper Hoffman, who's actually 18, is the son of the late Philip Seymour Hoffman, a close friend of Anderson's who appeared in five of his movies. Alana Haim is a musician in a group with her sisters, that is called Haim. Anderson is a fan and has previously directed several of their music videos. Anderson's humor goes on some strange tangents, not all of which work, but the picture is as good as it is primarily because of Alana Haim. Her character is clearly immature, but she plays at being grown up with complete conviction, while her unacknowledged needs are always leaking through. It's a marvelous performance, consistently funny and engaging. Haim carries the movie with apparent ease. The picture has a kind of splashy “anything goes” style, with Anderson's signature sweeping camera movements and great use of background music. There are good parts for some familiar people: Sean Penn, Tom Waits, and especially Bradley Cooper, insanely funny as an unhinged film producer. But most of all, watch the film for Alana Haim. She's the real deal. Oh, and about that title: “Licorice pizza” was SoCal slang for a vinyl record, and it became the name of a popular chain of LA-area record stores. The film doesn't tell us any of this. I had to Google it to find out. But I think Anderson named his film Licorice Pizza as a way to sum up the ‘70s in his home state. Like the film, it's an affectionate joke.

Since leaving show business, Gary has become "the author of more than a dozen books on the meeting ground between consciousness, culture, and the western inner tradition." His latest work is entitled, "Beyond the Robot: The Life and Work of Colin Wilson," about someone regarded as "one of the most underrated and defiant scholars of the 20th century." Gary Lachman (aka Gary Valentine), once the bassist of Blondie, has since turned his sights toward being a popular writer of the occult. His traditional background in philosophy has given him a unique perspective into the history of esoteric systems, allowing him to see patterns and historical lineages across these disciplines which so rarely overlap. Gary has written on Jung, Swedenborg, Rudolf Steiner, and histories of the occult and consciousness, and joins us to talk about the spiritual practice of "reading and research and contemplating." We also talk about the physical health of mystics, creative illness, and revelatory knowledge vs academic knowledge. More at philoofhealth.com

It's all smack and tackle thanks to this being Superbowl weekend. The food is great, but I'm not one for the game myself. I'd much rather sitdown and listen to some great garage rock, or some swingin' lounge music. Or, I could mix up a modcast of epic proportions. Flashback to 1984, and to 1967, and to 1978, and even just back to '02. Flashbacks are great aren't they? So are the tracks on this week's modcast. Okay, maybe not epic, but pretty damn good none the less. Got a couple of new things to serve up for you: some power pop from The Wishes, and some very excellent mod R&B courtesy of Invisible Lead Soup. And there's a few nice gems here that I blew the dust off of which I think you'll dig from The Standells, the Sidewalks and not the least of which is a great little song from power pop composer Gary Valentine who, sadly, has never received the accolades he's due. Get thee over to the modcast homepage and check out the show, as well as the bonus videos and other goodies!
