As he prepares for an exciting 2025, with intentions to release two or three new books, Baylor shares insights into the true challenges of writing and how it transcends beyond simple difficulty. He discusses the subjective nature of terms like 'hard' and 'easy,' reframing the focus on how to surpass past achievements and continually reinvent oneself to add new value to the world. Baylor stresses the importance of embracing the mindset of an author not just in writing, but in life. Through compelling narratives and mindset shifts, he outlines the process of crafting unique life stories that others will want to read and learn from. Emphasizing originality and individuality, he advises against the pitfalls of comparison and highlights the importance of starting today to prepare for a successful future. You should love the fact that you're not them." "Find a recipe that works for you, add your own sprinkles." Leadership is Not Just a Title; It's an Attitude

SHOW NOTES: On this show…we are embracing leadership as an attitude and not just as a title. Maybe you're a CEO, VP, or Director and maybe you don't hold a title at all. Either way, you are a leader. You don't need a corner office or fancy title to lead; all you need is a little courage and a lot of self-belief. It's all about finding your voice and stepping into your power, whether you're running a team, working behind the scenes, or just navigating your everyday life. Leadership isn't about calling the shots—it's about taking charge of your journey, lifting others up, and being the CEO of your own story. We'll explore how you can lead from where you are and talk about how being the “entrepreneur” of your life means setting your own course. It's time to ditch the idea that leadership is only for a select few—if you've got passion, purpose, and a willingness to grow, then congratulations, my friend—you're already a leader!  For some people, taking charge comes easily. For me, it was inherent. I can remember times when I stepped up and took charge, times when I was asked, and times when it was assumed. I also remember times when it didn't always go as planned. There are instances where I find comfort in mentoring and encouraging but not leading and other times where I purposely, take a back seat. What about you? Where are you most comfortable and where would you like to grow? Being a leader is about mindset, whether in a workplace, a community, or your personal life. Everyone has the potential to lead by finding their voice and taking control of their journey. Matt Mayberry helps us understand that You Don't Need to Be “the Boss” to Be a Leader found at the Harvard Business Review Michelle Rees shows us How to Take Ownership of Your Life (and Get Everything You Want) found at Whole Life Challenge Simon Sinek gives some valuable insight on What Makes a Leader Great? Found on his YouTube channel Embracing an entrepreneurial spirit is all about thinking like a visionary, taking initiative, and having the courage to pursue new opportunities. Here are some ways to cultivate that mindset in your own life: Adopt a Growth Mindset Entrepreneurs are always learning. Instead of fearing failure, see it as a chance to grow. Every challenge or mistake is an opportunity to improve, and this mindset opens doors to new possibilities. Take Initiative Stop waiting for permission or perfect timing. Whether it's in your job, personal life, or side projects, be proactive. Look for opportunities to lead, solve problems, or create something new. The entrepreneurial spirit thrives on taking action. Set Big Goals and Break Them Down Entrepreneurs dream big, but they know that success doesn't happen overnight. Set ambitious goals, but break them into smaller, manageable steps. This keeps you focused and motivated while building momentum. Be Comfortable with Risk To think like an entrepreneur, you've got to get comfortable with uncertainty. Not every idea will succeed, and that's okay. Take calculated risks, and view them as a necessary part of innovation and growth. Get Creative with Problem-Solving Entrepreneurs don't just accept problems—they find creative solutions. Train yourself to think outside the box. When something doesn't go according to plan, instead of throwing in the towel, ask yourself, “What's another way to approach this?” Embrace Failure as a Learning Experience Entrepreneurs see failure as feedback. Don't let setbacks stop you—learn from them. Whether it's a botched presentation or a business idea that didn't take off, each “failure” is a stepping stone toward success. Network and Collaborate Entrepreneurs know the power of connection. Surround yourself with people who inspire you, challenge you, and push you to be better. Collaboration sparks new ideas and can lead to exciting opportunities. Stay Flexible and Adaptable The entrepreneurial spirit thrives on flexibility. Be willing to pivot when things change or new opportunities arise. If plan A doesn't work, entrepreneurs are already thinking of plan B (and C, and D). Cultivate Passion and Purpose Entrepreneurship isn't just about making money—it's about passion. Find what excites you and pursue it with enthusiasm. Having a sense of purpose fuels persistence and keeps you going even when the road gets tough. Celebrate Small Wins Entrepreneurship is a journey, and it's important to celebrate the milestones along the way. Recognize your progress, no matter how small, because it keeps you motivated and energized for the bigger goals ahead. CHALLENGE: It's time to step up and take charge—be the leader of your own life by finding your voice, embracing risks, and turning challenges into opportunities. Remember, leadership is an attitude, not a title, and you have the power to create the path you want!   I Know YOU Can Do It!

Hey Strong and Simple peeps! Bringing you an episode after this long hiatus that is actually a recording from Michelle for her Countdown to 2024 Challenge folks last weekend. Thought this could help all of you too, so wanted to share! If this episode is helpful to you, please share with your friends and family and on your social media!  We have some amazing episodes loading for 2024, so if you've missed us, don't worry, we're coming back! If you're interested in jumping into the challenge, we have 3 more weeks to go!  Find out all the details HERE ------------------- From the Countdown to 2024 Challenge: It's the first weekend of December and that means we are really ramping up to a solid month of quite likely nonstop holiday gatherings; with family, with friends, and even with co-workers. I used spend the holidays (and most other days TBH) white knuckling my way around food. Starving before events or dinners to save up calorie for the big meals and then ending up feeling full of shame at my lack of "will power" around foods when I eventually overate and stuffed myself - because I was so damn hungry! I would eventually find myself mindlessly grazing or full on binging on foods I thought were off limit foods that I restricted from myself. This would then lead back into a restriction cycle and so on until I just knew something had to give. And the thing that gave was letting go of dieting and a never ending pursuit of intentional weight loss. Shedding, unpacking, and unlearning years of diet messaging, disordered patterns of eating and binge eating tendencies is not an overnight task. It is an ongoing practice and learning experience to let go of perfectionism and treat yourself with compassion and care as opposed to punishment and shame. So what if you are new to this? What if this holiday season is the first one or even the first time you are wanting to stop the cycle and shift to an intuitive, mindful and compassionate relationship with food? First, pat yourself on your back, because you're here for the countdown to 2024 challenge - which is already a great step to supporting yourself not falling into the holiday diet cycle! The most important thing is to be patient with yourself and remind yourself this is a practice and it is not about perfection. In fact, one of the reasons it is so hard to shift away from diets is because we have been so conditioned to follow a concrete set of rules that we can feel quite untethered and even dysregulated without the hard core structure of a diet. We can find it hard to trust ourselves and our bodies. To help you with some structure and guidance, I have jotted down 8 tips to support you as you navigate the next few weeks (and beyond.). There is no stop date this - because it is a practice for life. And again, these are suggestions - there is no right or wrong!

NOTES: While he was still speaking to her, messengers arrived from the home of Jairus, the leader of the synagogue. They told him, “Your daughter is dead. There's no use troubling the Teacher now.”  But Jesus overheard them and said to Jairus, “Don't be afraid. Just have faith.”  Then Jesus stopped the crowd and wouldn't let anyone go with him except Peter, James, and John (the brother of James). When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw much commotion and weeping and wailing. He went inside and asked, “Why all this commotion and weeping? The child isn't dead; she's only asleep.”  The crowd laughed at him. But he made them all leave, and he took the girl's father and mother and his three disciples into the room where the girl was lying. Holding her hand, he said to her, “Talitha koum,” which means “Little girl, get up!” And the girl, who was twelve years old, immediately stood up and walked around! They were overwhelmed and totally amazed. Jesus gave them strict orders not to tell anyone what had happened, and then he told them to give her something to eat. Mark 5:35–43 (NLT) Jesus will not be HURRIED. Jesus EXCEEDS our EXPECTATIONS. If God always met your expectations,  He'd never have a chance to exceed them. IGNORE those who tell you to GIVE UP.  REFUSE FEAR. Keep BELIEVING. BOTTOM LINE: Jesus can take you from fear to faith. THE CHALLENGE: It's time to get up.

Have you been hearing us talk recently about… training, training, and more training? Did you hear our recent announcement about Sync Logistics training? Well, the hype is still going in this episode of the Extra Mile Podcast by Metafora. Also, did we mention… it's the season finale!!!! Don't worry though, we'll be back in 2023 with more great guests and conversations. Our host Adam”P-Mutt” Perlmutter and guest host Teresa Ronquillo chat with the one and only Ryan Schreiber, VP of Industry and Growth at Metafora. They discussed a very interesting topic: training and training-as-a-service. What's the moral of the story? There is a business cost to not doing training or to doing training poorly. Conversely, if you train your people the right way, it's an investment rather than an expense. This way, your employees will be trained based on what you need for the company and, more importantly, what you need from them. Training-as-a-Service: Sync Logistics Training Ryan shares the origin story of the brand name for this new training-as-a-service solution. Sync made sense for so many reasons, largely what it represents as the root word for many other words. To illustrate: Some of the training can be done synchronously. Some of the training can be done asynchronously. Sync is synchronizing the learning, as in standardizing it. Issues with the Current State of Training We dump too much on people early on, and then they often remember a bunch of stuff they don't need to remember yet, and they don't remember a bunch of stuff they do need to know at that point in their training. Companies don't do enough training early on and then don't have an opportunity to come back to the basics for many employees. Setting this foundation is crucial. Companies don't do a good job explaining the “why”. Without the why, you're simply just training your people to become automatons. The training sticks and becomes true knowledge when people understand why they are learning it, why it's important, why it is the way it is, why the knowledge will help them in their role, etc. The focus tends to be on new hires only. There needs to be an equal focus on ongoing and developmental training. Consider: First time managers. How to have difficult conversations. Advanced capacity strategy concepts. What challenges does Sync Logistics Training tackle for transportation and logistics companies? Challenge: It's hard to avoid management burn-out on training Challenge: It's difficult to make digital training engaging Challenge: It's hard to ensure that shadowing time for new hires is valuable, impactful, and not a waste of time for all employees involved Challenge: Improving a training program is costly Challenge: It takes too long to get new hires to a place where they are valuable contributors. What's the thesis of Sync Logistics Training? The concept here is to take employees on a learning journey, beyond new hire training. It starts on day one, yes, you need to build a better new hire training program, but equally important are ongoing and developmental training. What type of companies would benefit the most from implementing a quality TaaS solution? Ones that want their employees to ramp faster Ones that want their customer and carrier experience to be better Ones that want to build a deeper bench Want to check out more of the content references in this episode? The phrase “saints before us” invites listeners to consider the duality of its meaning: In that, the new season of the podcast focuses on Missouri's Black United Methodist Churches and highlights both the work of the saints that came before us and offers an invitation to the saints currently before us to carry that legacy.

As I get ready to launch this podcast, I am trying to take a deep breath. As multiple parts of the podcast got cut, I try and not to get frustrated about some amazing bits of conversation we lost. We all had a fair amount of unpredictable events in the last year or two. So I will add this one to the list and stay grateful for all that Jenna shared with us, her experience of moving countries, founding a movement, seeing it halt and having the energy to do it all again. Let's hear about Berlin Clothing Swap. Moving continents Jenna moved to Berlin in 2013 after a few visits to the city. She found Berlin offered so many possibilities and opportunities and, like me, she originally moved for a year! Well, for her it has been 8 years but she is still passionate about the city. When she first arrived, she did not know many people or had much money to spend. As her parents instilled circular fashion concepts into her through her childhood, she decided the same was needed in Berlin. With that, she created the Berlin Clothing Swap - an opportunity for people to swap clothes (and meet friends).  So how did she go from an idea to the first event? The first Berlin Clothing Swap "event" Jenna admits she had a hard time calling it an event when only one person showed up. Looking back, she knows what went wrong - no advertising, no signs. Luckily, that one person that showed up allowed her to realize she was onto something but had to put a different effort into it. For a while, she struggled with the direction she should take - what format, what model, what rules. It was not until 3 years later that she put together another event (courtesy of a broken foot). The pause in her life allowed her to really put time into it, study social media and really think through the different dimensions that would make Berlin Clothing Swap successful.  And BCS started to grow. Hit by the pandemic As Jenna told me about the clothes people can try at events and swap between them, I could not help but think of what a distant reality that was.  Large events, people swapping clothes, I don't even know where to start. Jenna was planning a swap event at the time the pandemic hit but had to cancel. To keep the movement going, she created a Facebook group where people could swap directly in terms mutually agreeable. That way, they could keep it going, even if they did not get a chance to try it on in advance. She was not afraid of being disintermediated because, in the end, she is very passionate about the circular fashion cycle continuing. Founder's Syndrome One of the greatest challenges Jenna faced as an entrepreneur was to delegate. She was used to managing everything on her own, and as Berlin Clothing Swap grew she had to give some out. She started with social media management and always has volunteers for her events. She also had to find additional founding members to register as a non-profit, and that has also caused some worries. "This is my baby and the idea that someone can come and take it away from me at some point is difficult" Letting go to grow is definitely something I have reflected on before. At the same time, it comes with the added responsibility that no matter who helps you, the responsibility is all on you if something fails. Looking forward Jenna is excited about the re-opening. As she is planning a new event for this Summer she has many plans looking forward. She wants to have smaller events, thematic or by size and really go after what people are asking for. In an ideal world, Jenna would like to even convert this passion into her full-time occupation. She is happy she did not do that pre-pandemic though! And if you hear her talk, you can see Jenna has multiple dreams and is open to multiple possibilities. I can't wait to see what is on the cards. Lockdown in Berlin Jenna was on holiday when the pandemic hit. On her return to Berlin, she found that working for home actually worked out for her. The pause in life helped her take stock and actually invest more in her work and achieve an even better performance. At home, she kept painting by numbers, started yoga and even received a care package from her parents with different games. Jenna missed out on meeting friends, putting on some make-up, going out! "I missed life!" But like me, she also found the introvert in her that enjoyed spending time with her partner, watch movies, take walks with friends in a more personal 1-on-1 experience. She also found that there was power in the ability to cancel plans and say no in the moments where she needed to take care of herself. Genuine emotions Jenna was very open about what her difficult points were through this pandemic. She has not seen her family in a long time (though she now has flights booked) and that has made her extremely sad. In the low moments, cycling has been a great way to manage her emotions and make her feel better. But she also admits to indulging in reality tv to just have a good laugh. That is allowed too! What will the new normal be? As the re-opening is here, Jenna is finding herself exhausted from all the events. She hopes to be able to find more balance in the future and really embrace the fact that she won't be able to be there for every party and will listen to her body more "There will be other parties, there will be other birthdays, there will be other dinners. It's ok to say no" That is a key learning she is bringing into her life from this pandemic. One that I found myself struggling with as well. Today is the season finale for Life, Camera, Action season 2. To wrap us up, my guest Harriet and I will be talking about how she takes designs and brings costumes to life for both theater and film. Harriet is a professional costume, prop, and puppet maker based in the UK. When she’s not working on set or backstage she co-runs The Wardrobe Chronicles, an online space to educate and encourage creatives aspiring or currently working within the costuming industry. In her almost decade-long career, she has worked on everything from regional theatre to Disney's Aladdin (2019) and The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, currently streaming on Netflix.Remember: Costumes are the final element that make a character real. They are the symbol that people literally buy into and wear to emulate their heroes. Therefore, it’s incredibly important to choose the right team to work with to make your designs a reality. Only choose people who truly get and appreciate your vision. Research: To bring your costuming to the next level for your storytelling projects, compare your designs and explore their functionality. If they will be used on stage, is there a practical place for a mic pack? If you have a design for screen, are there features that will potentially set you up for continuity errors? The more thorough your design, the more efficient the construction process will be.Challenge: It’s important to know your worth as a creative and stand by it. This honors you, the people you collaborate with, and the projects you take on. So take some time and calculate your typical cost for a project including base materials, time, extra resources, equipment rentals, etc. Then add on an additional amount that you would like to receive for your services. If that total comes out as a number that feels great to you, stick to it! If not, recalculate and adjust as needed.http://www.victoriaruke.comTo learn more about Harriet, her projects, and The Wardrobe Chronicles: https://www.thewardrobechronicles.com/Follow her on social media: @chronicleswardrobe @endlessworkshop

Do you ever wish there was someone you could talk to? Someone who would understand the challenges you face at any given moment? But maybe, as you think of all your friends and family, and perhaps even your church pastor, sometimes it seems that there is no such person. I was reading in the New Testament book of Hebrews and came across this fascinating verse of scripture.Hebrews 5:8 says, “Jesus…learned obedience from what he suffered.”What an interesting verse. Jesus learned obedience from what he suffered. He learned obedience by actually obeying. Jesus did not learn how to obey; He learned what is involved in obedience. Jesus learned the experience of obedience, and part of that learning was enduring suffering. One thing that God, enthroned in heaven does not know is the experience of obedience. Enthroned in the heavens, God obeys no one – all obey Him.· Jesus obeyed in the spectacular challenges of his life.· Jesus obeyed in ordinary aspects of life.· Jesus obeyed as a child, as a teen, as a young man.· Jesus obeyed privately and He obeyed secretly.· Jesus obeyed God His Father, and He obeyed rightful human authority.· Jesus obeyed in all things, even to the end. Here's the point from this verse in the Book of Hebrews. I want you to see this. Jesus experienced what we experience. Jesus was tested like are. Jesus suffered like we do. Though it all he experienced what it was like to be obedient.Today we serve a God who understands our lives. He understands our joy and our happiness. He understands our pain and our sorrow. Jesus understand when we go through trials, temptations, and even suffering because he has been there.Hebrews 4:15 says, “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin.”That High Priest is Jesus Christ. And in Him, I realize that I am not alone. There is someone I can talk to, who will understand exactly what I'm going through and what I need at any given moment… because He's been there! The same is true for you!I love it that this verse tells us that Jesus can empathize with our weaknesses. Jesus feels empathy. Empathy is the ability to understand and to share the feelings of another. To the ancient Greeks, the primary attribute of God was the essential inability to feel anything at all. Jesus isn't like that. He knows and He feels what we go through. The ancient Greek word translated sympathize literally means “to suffer along with.”What makes the difference is that Jesus added humanity to His deity, and lived among us. When you have been there, it makes all the difference. John 1:14 speaking of Jesus says, “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.”I hope you'll be encouraged by the knowledge that whatever you are going through, Jesus understands. He understands weariness. He understands grief and sorrow. He understands frustration. He understands the constant demands of life. He even understands your temptations. Today's Challenge: It's so easy for us to feel alone and to believe that no one understands what we are going through. Stand on the Word of God today that tells us that Jesus understands. He is with you and will provide whatever you need.

I remember a difficult season my wife and I had some years ago. We were struggling financially and I was deeply discourage. I still had faith in God, but I was struggling. Why were we going through this situation? Why wasn't God providing for our needs quicker. I remember an argument my wife and I had where I expressed to her that I didn't think God cared about us anymore. She responded by saying, “Loren, you know that's not true.”  She was right. I knew it wasn't true, but it was how I felt at the moment.I wish I could say I have never struggled with my faith, but that would not be true. Sometimes we are weary. We are tired. Sometimes it's hard to hold on. Sometimes we don't see God's hand at work. Sometimes we hear the lie of the enemy telling us God is not there. He doesn't care. There is not a person here today, or watching online who hasn't at some point, struggled with their faith. “Doubt is a virus that infects all people.” - Lee StrobelMark 9:14-29 - “So they brought him. When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth.21 Jesus asked the boy's father, “How long has he been like this?”“From childhood,” he answered. 22 “It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.”23 “‘If you can'?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who believes.”24 Immediately the boy's father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”25 When Jesus saw that a crowd was running to the scene, he rebuked the impure spirit. “You deaf and mute spirit,” he said, “I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.”26 The spirit shrieked, convulsed him violently and came out. The boy looked so much like a corpse that many said, “He's dead.” 27 But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him to his feet, and he stood up.Our hearts go out to this family. Their son is possessed by a demon. The demonic spirit has made the boy mute. He cannot speak. The demonic spirit throws the boy on the ground, he foams at the mouth and gnashes his teeth. The demonic spirit causes the boy to jump into fire or water to kill him. The poor boy is tormented. “…if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.” (Mark 9:22)It's not that he didn't believe…it's that he had some doubt. A little doubt is better than no belief.  Bring your faith. Bring your doubts. Bring your struggles. God can handle it.He did believe in Jesus' power to deliver his boy – after all, why else would he have come to Jesus? But he also recognized his doubts. So, he tearfully plead with Jesus: Lord, I believe; help me overcome my unbelief!Maybe after the family has been through, it just seemed to good to be truth that Jesus could heal and deliver the boy. Maybe the father didn't want to get his hopes up only to be disappointed once again.Ask God to give you faith and to help you believe.Understand that faith is a choice, not a feeling.Act on your faith, not your unbelief. That's what Noah did when he built the ark. It's what Abraham did when he offered Isaac. It's what David did when he faced Goliath. It's what Joshua did when he marched around Jericho. It's what Nehemiah did when he built the wall. Do you think these men had perfect faith? No way. They didn't know in advance how everything was going to work out. But why took a deep breath and decided to trust God, and they acted on their faith, not their doubts. That's what we must do today.Today's Challenge: It's okay to tell God you are struggling in your faith. He already knows. Be like the father in this story and tell God, “I do believe, but help me overcome my unbelief.” I believe God will strengthen your faith today.

They said: Take it up to the sukkah [on the roof]. When they would give Rabbi Tzadok less than a k'beitzah of food [even bread], he would take it with a cloth (he ate with tahara and would wash his hands before touching food, but for such a small amount he wouldn't wash, so he would avoid touching the food directly), he would eat it outside of the sukkah, and he wouldn't recite the blessing after it. Gemara: Challenge: Is the mishna quoting a story that contradicts the law it is teaching [Rabbi Tzadok didn't follow the stringency of Rabban Yochanan ben Zakkai and Rabban Gamliel]? Resolution: The mishna is telling us that with regard to this law one can be stringent and is not considered arrogant (in general it's not good to be demonstrative with one's stringencies, but here it's permitted). When they would give Rabbi Tzadok less than a k'beitzah of food [even bread], he would take it with a cloth, he would eat it outside of the sukkah, and he wouldn't recite the blessing after it. Challenge: It seems that Rabbi Tzadok would not permit eating a full k'beitzah outside of the sukkah. This would be a challenge to the opinions of Rav Yosef and Abayye (21.6). Resolution: Perhaps the mishna is only teaching Rabbi Tzadok's law of a beitzah with regard to the laws of netilas yodayim* and birchas hamazon, but one is still allowed to eat a beitzah or more outside of the sukkah.   _________ * Tosfos: More than a k'beitzah cannot be eaten by covering one's hands with a cloth because we're concerned that he might touch the bread with his hands. But there is a difficulty here, because Rabbi Tzadok was a kohen who is permitted to eat more than a k'beitzah with a cloth.

Rava: It is possul . Summary Rava to Abayye: So according to you, a sukkah can be made up of 2 parallel walls, as long as there is a board running across from one to the other? (It would seem so, because in the case of the exedra there are no walls at all!) Abayye to Rava: In that case I would agree that it's possul because it's like an open alleyway. (The imaginary wall is erased by the fact that people are breaking through it all the time. But behind the portico the exedra has actual walls around it). Challenge: It seems that Abayye and Rava are merely rehashing an old debate of Rav and Shmuel: An exedra that is in an open valley (it is not surrounded by walls, but it does have two walls at a right angle): Rav: One is permitted to carry within its bounds on Shabbos because of ‘pi tikrah'. Shmuel: ‘Pi tikrah' is not applied in this case. Resolution: There is no doubt with regard to Shmuel's opinion. Abayye and Rava's argument depends on their understanding of Rav. Abayye holds that Rav always applies the principle of pi tikrah, so he applies it here as well. Rava explains that Rav applied the principle of ‘pi tikrah' here in the valley because the walls were made especially for the exedra. But in the first case the walls are actually part of houses, and they are not there for the exedra at all.

In the late 1800's George Mueller operated an orphanage that at one time had 1,000 orphans. One morning there was no food to eat, but he called all the children and staff together and prayed thanking God for the provision of food, even though no food was on the table. A few moments later a baker knocked on the door. He told Mr. Muller that God had led him to bake bread the night before and give it to the orphanage. Before the bread was given to the children, a milkman knocked on the door. He said that his milk truck had broken down and he wanted to give the milk to the orphanage. Regardless of his circumstances, Mueller had decided to be thankful. Colossians 3:15-16 - “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.”The Apostle Paul is reminding us there is a connection between being thankful and having peace in our hearts and in our relationship.Gratitude gives us perspective. It reminds of us truths that we have forgotten. It causes us to recognize how blessed we are, instead of focusing on what we don't have, or wished we had. A thankful heart helps us remember God's goodness and faithfulness. When I was a child we used to sing an old hymn in church. It was called, “Count your blessings.” The first verse went like this:When upon life's billows you are tempest-tossed,When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,Count your many blessings; name them one by one,And it will surprise you what the Lord has done. The hymn writer was correct. Discouragement causes us to look inward, but gratitude enables us to look outward. And, sometimes upon reflection, we are surprised to see all that God has done. This year we have faced challenges unforeseen. No one could have predicted on December 31st, 2019, as we celebrated the coming new year, that we would face all we have.  The coronavirus has brought sickness to many, here in America 260,000 people have lost their lives to the virus. Imagine the thousands of families with an empty chair at the table this Thanksgiving. The shutdowns and restrictions have impacted us all. Financially many are hurting. Our lives have been disrupted by the inability to go to church, school, the gym, and pretty much anywhere. It would be easy for us this season to be discouraged, angry, and in despair, but let's take a minute to count our blessings. You and I have so many reasons to be thankful, and I encourage you to make your own list. For me,At the top of my list, I'm grateful for Jesus, who is my savior and my Lord. His presence and power in my life.Wife and three daughtersParents and siblingsFriends who mean the world to mePhysical, mental, emotional, and spiritual healthNeeds are met: food, clothing, shelter, transportationGod's call on my life for ministryPacific Christian Center, here in Santa Maria, CA.The promise of eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.No matter what you are going through, make time today to give thanks to God. In fact, it's God's will that we do so. 1 Thessalonians 5:13 says, “give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.”Today's Challenge: It's quite simple, grab a sheet of paper and pen and make a gratitude list. If you have family with you, get everyone involved and see how many blessings you can count.

I’ve always been a huge fan of personality assessments. DISC, Myers-Briggs, StrengthsFinder—they all fascinate me. I love reading the results of these different assessments because they’re usually pretty positive. You get an entire report that focuses on your strengths—who wouldn’t have fun reading that? Well, earlier this year, my friend Rachel Cruze convinced me to take a different kind of personality assessment: the Enneagram. I took the test, not expecting to learn anything new about myself. But y’all, I was so wrong. This assessment was so different from any other I’d ever taken. Rather than telling me what I was good at, this assessment revealed all of my weaknesses (Some I didn’t even know I had!), and the deeper motivations and fears associated with those weaknesses. Related: Ep 79: Take Control of Your Life With the Power of Personal Responsibility Not only did I feel like there was finally a personality assessment that truly understood me, but I also felt like it helped me understand myself better. Learning about the Enneagram has been transformational for me. It’s made me so much more self-aware. And you know what? Knowing your weaknesses and being self-aware is one of the best gifts you can give to both yourself and those around you. What Is Self-Awareness? Being self-aware is about knowing your strengths and your weaknesses. For example, self-awareness is about knowing how you come across to others—not just your intentions, but how you actually come across. I’ve noticed a pattern in my life where people describe me as being intense and aggressive. But here’s the thing: I don't intend to be aggressive, and I don't think I'm intense. I describe myself as enthusiastic and passionate. I’d never use the words intense or aggressive. But you know what? After hearing enough people use those words to describe me, I started to pay attention. It turns out, intense and aggressive is how I come across to other people. Do you know what paying attention to those patterns did for me? It gave me a better understanding of how I actually come across to people so I could learn to adjust my tone, behavior or volume level based on who I'm talking to. It’s pretty easy to be self-aware when it comes to our strengths, isn’t it? And it’s important to know what your strengths are so you can leverage them in your life and your business. But I want to spend this episode talking about the other side of the coin: what we should do with the not-so-good stuff. Three Ways to Become More Self-Aware We all have blind spots. You know what a blind spot is, right? Think about when you're driving in the car and want to change lanes. You slowly start to get over and all of a sudden you’re swerving back into your lane while someone blares their horn at you because you almost hit them. But you had no idea the car was there—it was in your blind spot. And that's exactly what our weaknesses can be like for us—we’re not even aware they exist. But if we’re going to succeed in life and business, we have to be as familiar with our weaknesses as we are with our strengths. So, let’s talk about three things you should do with your weaknesses: 1. Recognize your weaknesses. I spent so many years unaware that I can come across as aggressive or intense—it was definitely one of my blind spots. If we want to mature, improve our relationships, and become more pleasant people, we have to recognize exactly what our weaknesses are so that we can work on them (more on that later). So how can you recognize some of your own blind spots? Pay attention to patterns and themes around what people say about you. If you don't notice a pattern, ask people you love and trust. Take a personality assessment like the Enneagram or DISC. 2. Acknowledge your weaknesses. Once you recognize your weaknesses, I want you to call them out. Own them and be up-front about them. That's not to say you have to broadcast your weaknesses to the world, but when you sense you’re acting out of a weakness or you’re coming across in a negative way, go ahead and call it out. If you’re with someone, acknowledge it so they don't have to. Related: Say What They're Thinking Here's what's so amazing about this: When you acknowledge that you’re aware of your weakness, it completely disarms the other person. They feel immediate relief because they no longer feel the pressure to call you out. If you simply acknowledge where you're coming from and the weaknesses that are influencing your reaction, it's amazing how beneficial it will be to yourself and the other person. 3. Work on your weaknesses. Being self-aware of your weaknesses doesn’t mean you’re off the hook to act however you want to act. You don’t get to use your weakness as a pass for your behavior. If your weakness is time management, and you acknowledge that, you don’t get an automatic excuse to be late everywhere you go. If you struggle with a short temper, you don’t get to say, “This is just who I am,” every time you blow up on someone. We all need to work on our weaknesses, mature, and become better human beings in the world. But we can't do that if we don't actively work on our weaknesses. For me, I’m learning to be quiet, submit and respect authority, apologize more quickly, and let others lead. So, what weakness do you need to take personal responsibility for? What do you need to commit to working on this week? Friend, there’s no shame in this. You’ll improve every relationship and interaction in your life when you work on weaknesses. Related: Ep 82: Succeed at Anything By Understanding the Importance of Discipline Working on your weaknesses is a long and difficult journey. But if you will commit to recognizing them, acknowledging them, and working on them, I promise you’ll not only become a more self-aware person, but you’ll also become a more mature, well-rounded, and pleasant person to be around. Becoming Self-Aware Through the Enneagram with Ian Cron I'm so excited to introduce you to my guest today, Ian Cron! He’s the bestselling author of The Road Back to You (a book I personally love that has transformed my life) and a master teacher of the Enneagram. On this episode, Ian and I talk about: How the Enneagram is different from other personality assessments The difference between self-knowledge and self-awareness The importance of being aware of your weaknesses and the underlying motivations How to navigate relationships with people who aren’t self-aware Challenge: It’s Not the Thought That Counts As a speaker and author, I'm always trying to find ways to say something unique. I want to say something new that hasn't been said before because—let’s be honest—the world is full of overused cliché phrases. Let's just go through a few examples, shall we? Finish these sentences in your head: Where there's a will, there's a . . . Don't put all your eggs in one . . . It's the thought that . . . Here's the thing about these cliché phrases: Most of them are overused because they're true—except that last one. Who came up with “It's the thought that counts?” And who’s used the phrase so much it’s lived on for centuries? I'll tell you who: People who don't do anything. “Oh, it's the thought that counts,” said every person ever who hasn’t followed through on their intentions. It's not the thought that counts. My husband's birthday is coming up, and there’s not a chance in the world he’ll be bragging the day after his birthday about what I thought about doing for him. He’s not going to be like, “Oh, my wife, she was going to get us tickets to my favorite concert, but she never got around to it. She never made reservations for dinner or booked a babysitter. But hey, she thought about it!” Related: Ep 34: Excuses That Steal Your Time Speaking of cliché quotes: The road to hell is paved with good intentions! No one cares what you think about. They care what you do. Your thoughts don’t change your relationships. Your actions do. Your thoughts don’t change your business. Your actions do. Your thoughts don’t reach your goals. Your actions do. So, here's the deal: It’s not the thought that counts. It's what you do that counts. It doesn't matter what you know. It matters what you do with what you know. Do you have an idea? Great. What are you going to do about it? Do you have a dream? Great. What are you going to do about it? Do you have a plan? Great. What are you going to do about it? Y'all, when you actually start to take action on your ideas, implement what you're learning, and do something with what you know, feel and dream in your heart, you really will be chasing your dream. You really will be building a business. You really will be creating a legacy. You really will be making an impact and changing the world. Stop thinking about it and go do it.

A Thriving Independent Business is a path for a creative entrepreneur to reach their goals toward realizing their passion. Creatives must focus on a priority, a passion that causes “angry compassion” to drive them toward living their fullest life. That can’t be done working for someone else. The key is an independent business. But don’t loose sight of the goal - it can be all to easy to get lost and lose motivation. This episode will shine a light on your journey. What is “Business”? “Business" is your entire service/education business Does Business also encompass your own singing/performing and other aspects of your entrepreneurial life? What is “Independent”? Your income is not dependent upon a long-term employer.  Your income is free from outside control; not depending on another's authority. What is “Thriving”? To Flourish To Prosper To Succeed What Is Not “Thriving”? Fail Why do we need to thrive? Passion for our work (different from elation or ecstasy). We care so deeply about the outcome that we commit ourselves to the outcome, whatever comes. What fills you with compassionate anger?  Ultimately you will change the world around you. Todd Henry from Die Empty and Accidental Creative Podcast “You have to be burning with an idea, or a problem, or a wrong that you want to right. If you’re not passionate enough from the start, you’ll never stick it out.” Steve Jobs Goals and Behavior What we pay attention to is what we are capable of changing.  Every time we act in alignment with who we want to become, it is incredibly empowering and affirming.  Goals vs actions Habits Priority vs priorities From Brodie Welch on The Entrepreneurial Musician podcast Why Accept the Challenge? It is easier to not change, but you are not done - ever. You will never reach a point where you should just maintain. Growth (of some sort) is always necessary to avoid lots of bad stuff. Business Evolution The last time you set your business goals you might have been a different person.  Reassess yourself, reassess your business identity.  How does your business (and you) embody self respect? Be the change you want to see in the world.  How can you model self respect for your students.  Is exhaustion a badge of honor? Growing vs Maintaining vs Pruning Are you adding without subtracting? Not everything should grow always and for all time - choose what to maintain and what to grow. Diversify your income sources.  Diversify your working style. Take Steps On the Path of Your Passion
