The gap between what the government spends and what it collects is expected to grow from about $1 trillion last year to $2 trillion for the 2023 fiscal year that ends Sept. 30, according to the latest projections from the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget (CRFB), a nonpartisan group that advocates for reducing the federal deficit. "This would be the highest deficit we’ve ever had outside of a recession or national emergency," Marc Goldwein, a senior policy director at CRFB, told FOX Business. The sizable increase stems from a number of factors, including high inflation, more expensive interest payments and a drop in tax receipts. It comes on the heels of a record drop in the budget shortfall last year, as the deficit dropped from close to $3 trillion to roughly $1 trillion after the government's record spending during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021. In 2022, the government enjoyed a surge in capital gains revenue after Americans capitalized on the booming market the previous year, sold more stock and recorded large gains. The market has not fared as well since then, leading to a sharp drop in capital gains tax revenue compared with last year. The Treasury Department likewise benefited from a spike in general tax collection, because surging inflation essentially pushed up nominal income for millions of households. Although the IRS indexes the tax code to inflation, it does so on a lag. Higher federal income tax brackets and standard deductions took effect at the beginning of 2023, essentially allowing more Americans to shield their income from the IRS. Social Security and Medicare are also indexed to inflation, meaning the government is spending more money on those programs than it did in fiscal year 2022. "But mostly what’s happening is it’s coming to the new normal, from an unusually low 2022 deficit," Goldwein said. "That’s pretty scary, because normal before the pandemic was $1 trillion. And in 2015, it was $500 billion. So we went from $500 billion is the normal, to $1 trillion is the normal, to $2 trillion is the normal in less than a decade." The figures exclude President Biden's $400 billion student loan cancellation plan, which was counted in the official 2022 deficit numbers but never implemented because the Supreme Court struck the policy down. One vehicle lit up in Pinellas Park and another car fire occurred in Palm Harbor. “Carfax says owners need to understand the fire risk doesn’t go away after their EV dries out,” ABC Actions News told viewers. “The salt water that is flooding can get into the battery and dry there and once it dries it creates what federal safety officials call bridges between cells and that can lead to fires and those fires can come anywhere from days to weeks later and once an EV catches fire it is incredible difficult to put it out,” said Patrick Olsen of Carfax. After Hurricane Ian, 21 electric vehicles caught fire in the state, prompting officials to warn residents ahead of Idalia's approach. “We saw a number of fires associated with EVs from Hurricane Ian. The gap between what the government spends and what it collects is expected to grow from about $1 trillion last year to $2 trillion for the 2023 fiscal year that ends Sept. 30, according to the latest projections from the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget (CRFB), a nonpartisan group that advocates for reducing the federal deficit. "This would be the highest deficit we’ve ever had outside of a recession or national emergency," Marc Goldwein, a senior policy director at CRFB, told FOX Business. The sizable increase stems from a number of factors, including high inflation, more expensive interest payments and a drop in tax receipts. It comes on the heels of a record drop in the budget shortfall last year, as the deficit dropped from close to $3 trillion to roughly $1 trillion after the government's record spending during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021. In 2022, the government enjoyed a surge in capital gains revenue after Americans capitalized on the booming market the previous year, sold more stock and recorded large gains. The market has not fared as well since then, leading to a sharp drop in capital gains tax revenue compared with last year. The Treasury Department likewise benefited from a spike in general tax collection, because surging inflation essentially pushed up nominal income for millions of households. Although the IRS indexes the tax code to inflation, it does so on a lag. Higher federal income tax brackets and standard deductions took effect at the beginning of 2023, essentially allowing more Americans to shield their income from the IRS. Social Security and Medicare are also indexed to inflation, meaning the government is spending more money on those programs than it did in fiscal year 2022. "But mostly what’s happening is it’s coming to the new normal, from an unusually low 2022 deficit," Goldwein said. "That’s pretty scary, because normal before the pandemic was $1 trillion. And in 2015, it was $500 billion. So we went from $500 billion is the normal, to $1 trillion is the normal, to $2 trillion is the normal in less than a decade." Former Ford CEO Mark Fields believes that Tesla is one generation ahead of its competitors in the EV race, despite its stock dropping around 7% after its investor day presentation failed to confirm any new car models. Tesla's keys to winning the EV race come down to product appeal, software or user interface, controlling cost, and consistent execution. Tesla has started installing its fourth-generation Supercharger posts in Europe with longer cables to reach charging ports of different EV models, according to Tesla's Head of Global Charging Infrastructure, Rebecca Tinucci. The company's charging network is now the world's largest global fast-charging network with over 40,000 Superchargers in 46 countries. Tesla has opened up its Supercharger network in North America to non-Tesla EVs at 8 Supercharger locations in New York and 2 in California, fitted with the new "magic dock" interface. Ccharging costs vary by location but Tesla offers a membership for reduced charging rates. Tesla has been granted over $330 million in tax incentives by the Nevada Governor's Office of Economic Development board for the company's new electric semi truck and battery manufacturing facility, as part of an expansion of Tesla's Nevada Gigafactory. In return, Tesla has committed to investing $3.6 billion over 10 years and hiring 3,000 new employees with an average wage of $33.49 per hour. Ford has announced plans to resume production of its electric F-150 Lightning pickup truck on March 13 after a battery issue caused one of the vehicles to catch fire. The resumption of production will be watched closely as Ford seeks to compete in the growing electric vehicle market. Polestar, the EV brand owned by Volvo Cars and Geely, announced an 84% increase in revenue for 2022 and halved its net loss to $466m. The company aims to launch two new EV models this year and increase its deliveries by nearly 60% to around 80,000 cars. Vietnamese automaker VinFast has delivered the first batch of 45 vehicles to US customers amid doubts about the company's corporate health. CleanTechnica confirms VinFast's assembly process is on track and the company has delivered over 4,278 EVs to local customers in Vietnam. Buick China has revealed the interior of its upcoming battery-electric crossover, the Electra E5, which boasts advanced technology such as a 30-inch EyeMax curved OLED screen and wireless charging. The vehicle is expected to launch in China before mid-year and in the U.S. for the 2024 model year. LG Energy Solutions and Honda have broken ground on a new joint venture battery plant in Ohio, representing a $4.4 billion investment and the creation of 2,200 new jobs. The plant will produce lithium-ion batteries to power Honda vehicles for North American consumers, with the goal of shifting to 100% EV sales by 2040. Aston Martin is set to reveal a future model lineup that includes a new full-electric car at a capital markets day for investors this summer, according to Chairman Lawrence Stroll. The luxury carmaker is currently overhauling its three core front-engine sports cars, the DB11, the Vantage, and the DBS, with the first to be delivered to customers this autumn. First Bus has ordered an additional 117 electric buses from Wrightbus to operate in four UK cities, with additional funding from the British government. This order, along with the previous one, will enable First Bus to operate over 600 electric buses by March 2024 and supports the company's goal of being CO2 neutral by 2035 Redwood Materials has completed its first year of recycling electric vehicle (EV) batteries and has recovered over 95% of lithium, cobalt, nickel, copper, and other metals from 1,268 battery packs weighing over 500,000 lbs. The company says the cost driver is logistics, which will reduce over time as end-of-life pack volumes increase. Daimler Buses is transforming its Mannheim plant into a center for electric city buses, and it will invest around €150m in both its German plants by the end of the decade. The company plans to offer CO2-neutral vehicles in all segments in Europe and Latin America by 2030, and it aims to sell only fully electric vehicles for city buses in Europe. Renewable energy sources in the UK generated more electricity than gas during the winter season, producing enough energy to power every home in the UK. The progress was made through the use of wind, hydro, and solar energy, and is in line with the UK government's goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2050. A new report from the International Energy Agency (IEA) shows that while global carbon dioxide emissions have increased, the growth has been tempered by a surge in renewable energy. The growth in renewable energy is driven by an increase in wind and solar installations and more supportive government policies, and the IEA emphasizes the need to accelerate the transition to renewable energy to achieve a sustainable future. A new study from the European Heat Pump Association and the European Heat Pump Network shows that heat pumps are significantly cheaper than green hydrogen for producing heat in Europe. Decarbonizing heating is a critical part of the EU's goal to reach net-zero by 2050, and the study highlights the role of heat pumps in achieving it.

The Great EV Consolidation is underway, and some electric vehicle stocks in your portfolio may not be around a year from now...In short, the number of electric vehicle companies will dramatically shrink over the next few years, not unlike that of the gas-powered car boom in the early 1900s… Back then, nearly 500 companies entered the race to capitalize on this technological marvel, but by 1930, less than 50 of them were operating. Cherry on the top: Just three automakers made up 80% of the market. It's a natural evolution. And the same thing is happening with EVs today. Which means that there are fantastic long-term investments and fantastic short-term trades to play the Great EV Consolidation… but only if you pick the right stocks.To prove my point, electric trucking company Nikola (NKLA) just agreed to acquire battery maker Romeo Power (RMO)! We've said before that the EV industry is too crowded, and we're due for a “great consolidation.” Nikola's buyout of Romeo is just the beginning.When a new technological paradigm emerges, everybody wants to start a business around it because they see an immense opportunity to strike it rich. But the market isn't big enough to sustain all those startups. As an industry matures, it consolidates around a few players. Those left out in the cold either go bankrupt or get acquired. Guess what? The EV market is maturing. Every time I leave the house, I see a Tesla Model 3, or I see a Tesla Model S, and often find myself in a “Tesla sandwich,” flanked by Tesla EVs on the highway. Looking at the data, June 2022 saw a record-high number of EV auto sales. The industry has started to become meaningful to the global economy. And I believe that over the next 12 to 36 months, the EV industry will be defined by two things – rapid growth and rapid consolidation. The top players that arise out of the EV boom will differentiate themselves from the pack in terms of some major value-add (think: cost, design, performance, or branding). Those electric car titans will attract all the consumer demand, reap all the rewards of the EV Revolution, and squeeze out 90% of the industry.So, when I look at the EV landscape today, I see a graveyard with a few shining stars.To make some short-term gains, look for small-cap EV stocks that could be great acquisition targets -- and are not at risk of bankruptcy. These companies will have an edge over their competitors, plus unrivaled talent and technology. Investors who take advantage of small, beaten-up, yet high-quality EV stocks primed to be bought out by future titans of industry will see tremendous gains over the coming few years.

The first inspiration was a complex data capture session at a gait lab using optical and EMG sensors, which recorded precise information about her walk.Electromyography sensors, also known as EMG sensors, measure small electromyographic signals generated by your muscles as you move them.  The second inspiration was functional electrical stimulation as part of her physical therapy.Electrode pads were placed on individual muscle groups, which a therapist stimulated during walking sessions to stimulate and strengthen the muscles. The device & company that was created is called CIONICThe device is a wearable for people with mobility issues that doesn't just monitor leg movements but actually helps activate the person's muscles. CIONIC partnered with the Laboratory for Engineering of the Neuromuscular System (LISiN) at The Polytechnic University of Turin. Robison talked on the device:“We set out to create a product that combined the diagnostic power of a multi-million dollar gait lab with the therapeutic power of Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) … We were confident we could leverage the recent technological advances enabling innovative products like self-driving cars and apply it to the human body to solve an enormous problem: 14% of adults in the US experience mobility impairment, a number expected to balloon to 20% by 2050."  The resulting sensor array successfully combines electromyography (EMG) and functional electrical stimulation (FES).LISiN Lab helped develop a comprehensive risk assessment strategy to ensure that the product was effective and safe Meta open sources early-stage AI translation tool that works across 200 languages | The Verge (08:37)  Social media conglomerate Meta has created a single AI model capable of translating across 200 different languagesThe company is open-sourcing the project in the hopes that others will build on its work. The AI model is part of an ambitious R&D project by Meta to create a so-called “universal speech translator,” which the company sees as important for growth across its many platforms Machine translation allows Meta to better understand its users (and so improve the advertising systems that generate 97 percent of its revenue)Could also be the foundation of a killer app for future projects like its augmented reality glasses. While most machine translation models handle only a handful of languages, Meta's model is all-encapsulating: it's a single system able to translate in more than 40,000 different directions between 200 different languages. Meta AI research scientist Angela Fan, who worked on the project, says the model, described in a research paper here, is already being tested to support a project that helps Wikipedia editors translate articles into other languages. Additionally, Fan stated that an important decision was to open-source as many elements of the project as possible — from the model to the evaluation dataset and training code. Meta also offers grants to researchers who want to contribute to such translation projects but are unable to finance their own projects We are going to end off with a quote from Fan:“I think that's really, really important, because it's not like one company will be able to holistically solve the problem of machine translation … It's everyone — globally — and so we're really interested in supporting these types of community efforts.”   Tiny shapeshifting robots brush and floss your teeth, kill bacteria | New Atlas (14:53) Engineers at the University of Pennsylvania have developed a system of microrobots that can change shape to form bristles or floss. They don't just brush plaque away, but release antimicrobials to kill bad bacteria. If you want to outsource brushing your teeth to robots. Part of the problem with teeth brushing is that toothbrushes don't account for differences in the shape or spacing of different people's teeth.The new system solves that issue by effectively shapeshifting. It's made up of iron oxide nanoparticles, which can be assembled into different formations and controlled using magnetic fields. The particles can be arranged into the shape of bristles to brush plaque from tooth surfaces, or thinner floss-like strands to scrub between teeth. Iron oxide is known to activate hydrogen peroxide, triggering a reaction that produces free radicals that kill bacteria and the sticky biofilms they form on teeth. The system was tested on a flat slab of artificial tooth-like material, then a 3D-printed tooth model, and finally on real human teeth. The tests showed that these microrobots could efficiently remove plaque and biofilms, reducing pathogenic bacteria below detectable levels. Also showed they could precisely control the bristle stiffness and length by adjusting the magnetic field.This allowed the tips to be made firm enough to clean the teeth but still soft enough to be gentle on gums. The researchers say that the customizability of this microrobot system could clean people's teeth better, while its hands-free potential could allow people with reduced fine motor skills to still take care of their oral health. New drug increases human life span by 30%, according to Mayo Clinic | Brighter Side News (19:47) Scientists may never find the elixir of life, but they are finding new ways to extend our life spans. Mayo Clinic researchers say senolytic drugs can boost a key protein in the body that may protect older people against aspects of aging and a range of diseases. Senolytics developed at Mayo Clinic and given once clear the bloodstream of senescent or "zombie" cells.These cells contribute to multiple diseases and negative aspects of aging. Diseases including atherosclerosis (a form of heart disease), diabetes, and lung disease. As you age, these zombies build up in the body. They can make it difficult for your body to repair tissue, and they can release chemicals that harm normal cells nearby. This study shows that the removal of senescent cells significantly boosts the production of a protective protein called a-klotho.The protein a-klotho is important to maintaining good health, as it tends to decrease with age, and especially decreases in multiple diseases, including Alzheimer's, diabetes and kidney disease.  James Kirkland, M.D., Ph.D., a Mayo Clinic internist and senior author of the study., talked on these Senolytics drugs:“We show that there is an avenue for an orally active, small-molecule approach to increase this beneficial protein and also to amplify the action of senolytic drugs." Animal studies have shown that decreasing a-klotho in mice shortens life span and increasing a-klotho in mice by inserting a gene that causes its production increases life span by 30%. This study shows that senolytics increased a-klotho in humans with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a senescence-associated disease that leads to frailty, serious breathing difficulties and death.   Tesla will open up Superchargers to non-Tesla electric vehicles in the US later this year - The Verge (24:23) Tesla plans to open up its Supercharger network to non-Tesla electric vehicles in the US in late 2022, according to a White House memo. The company has been allowing non-Tesla EVs to use its Supercharger plugs in several cities in Europe as part of a limited pilot program but has been quiet about when US charging stations would be available to non-Tesla EV owners.  The memo stated: “Later this year, Tesla will begin production of new Supercharger equipment that will enable non-Tesla EV drivers in North America to use Tesla Superchargers.” Tesla did not respond to an email seeking confirmation of these plans (Elon Musk disbanded the company's PR office in 2019). It's not clear whether the White House purposefully scooped Tesla's own announcement on this project. Tesla's Supercharger network is often held up as the best possible example of an EV charging network: fast, reliable, and plentiful.  This news is in line with what Tesla's CEO Elon Musk has, for years, about opening up his Superchargers to other companies' electric vehicles.  If the US version of the pilot program works the same as it does in Europe, non-Tesla EV owners will need to download the most recent version of Tesla's smartphone app in order to access the stations. They will be prompted to select “Charge Your Non-Tesla” in order to find the closest participating Supercharger site.  Tesla owners can still use the stations just as normal.

The Rivian CEO made the comment while giving reporters a tour of the company's plant in Normal, Illinois. - "Put very simply, all the world's cell production combined represents well under 10% of what we will need in 10 years," Scaringe said, according to The Journal. "Meaning, 90% to 95% of the supply chain does not exist," he added. - Last year, the Center for Automotive Research (CAR) released a report that found that battery cell production will not be able to meet demand until 2030, causing an estimated shortage of over 18.7 million electric cars between 2022 and 2029. - "I'm on the phone with semiconductor supplier CEOs every day," Scaringe said, according to report from Axios. "It's a day-in, day-out battle for allocation and the number we get is precisely equal to the number of vehicles we build," he added. Our second batch of A6 E-Tron spy shots captures the electric sedan testing at the famous Nurburgring race track. - The new photos continue to show the Audi covered in a full-body camouflage wrap. - The new electric sedan will ride on the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture jointly developed between Porsche and Audi. While we know the car's platform, we don't have any powertrain details. Audi previewed the A6 E-Tron with a concept that packed a dual-motor setup making 470 horsepower (350 kilowatts) that could send it to 62 miles per hour (100 kilometers per hour) in less than four seconds. The PPE architecture will also underpin the upcoming electric Porsche Macan and the Audi Q6 E-Tron crossover. The mobile connector bundle comes with an adapter that allows drivers to charge their cars from a standard 110v household outlet, with other adapters available for purchase separately. - In a reply to a user's reaction to the situation, Musk confirmed that the company will no longer include the Gen 2 mobile connector with new car purchases. “Usage statistics were super low, so seemed wasteful,” Musk explained, adding that Tesla “will be including more plug adapters with the mobile connector kit” in the future. It's unclear which adapters Tesla will start including with the kit. - The Gen 2 mobile connector is still listed as costing $275 on Tesla's site, and you couldn't purchase one even if you wanted to; the mobile connector is currently out of stock, and the same goes for the Gen 1 connector. That said, it's unclear how long either accessory has been out of stock or whether a supply chain shortage is contributing to Tesla's decision. The Forbes report indicates Tesla had only applied for a “small portion” of the money to build its first four stations, which would also accept non-Tesla EVs, much like a “pilot” program the company has started to test in Europe. Data reveals battery and plug-in hybrid electric car sales grew to a 2.39 per cent market share of new vehicles, up from 0.78 per cent in 2020. Tesla topped the list, selling 15,054 Model 3s. The Electric Vehicle Council data, released on Monday, shows five of the top 10 highest-selling models in Australia last year retail under $50,000 drive-away. Chinese-owned MG ZS SUV was the second highest with 1388 cars sold. The MG HS model, which retails for about $46,990 was fourth while the electric Mitsubishi Outlander, Hyundai Ioniq and Nissan Leaf also made the top 10. The Morrison government has been heavily criticised by carmakers and advocacy groups for its refusal to set targets in the sector and previous public ridicule of the technology. The popularity of PHEVs and BEVs were boosted by better availability at dealerships, and the continued efforts from governments to incentivise consumers to shift away from traditional segments. This level of growth meant that EVs accounted for a major portion of all new car registration in several markets, including Norway (90%), the Netherlands (64%), Sweden (61%), and Denmark (57%)."  - JATO Dynamics In 2021, plug-ins noted about 2.25 million registrations (28 European markets), which is 19% of the total market. December brought huge news, as the Tesla Model 3 was the best-selling car of any type, regardless of the powertrain, with 27,358 units. December was one of them, with over 900,000 registrations. Full electric vehicles (BEVs) ended the year growing significantly faster than PHEVs — +69% year over year (YoY) versus +31% YoY. That allowed them to end the year with 71% of plugin EV sale Interestingly, though, if we look at the quarterly average, because that's the proper way to look at Tesla performances, the Model 3 ends up being below the Model Y (52,000 units for the Model Y vs. 47,000 for the Model 3). So, in reality, the Model 3 could be winning its last monthly best seller titles, as the Model Y has greater potential to grow in 2022. After years of being limited to the Tesla Model 3, the midsize category is now experiencing true inflation of models, with several models ramping up deliveries. There's the sensible BMW iX3 (7,338 registrations), passing by the flashy Ford Mustang Mach-E (6,488 registrations), the tech-friendly XPeng P5 (5,037), the minimalistic cool Polestar 2 (5,334), and let's not forget the Korean cousins Hyundai Ioniq 5 (7,294 registrations) and Kia EV6 (5,072 registrations). Added to the Tesla Model 3 & Y, there is now a little for everyone in the midsize category. However, the Model S Plaid in question featured a spacer applied to one fender and not the other. Munro notes such alignment issues are common with cars constructed using aluminum pressed panels. Tesla is still a low-volume manufacturer, but when it comes to higher rates of production, these issues can spiral. NORTHVOLT BATTERY PLANT SPARKS INTO LIFE, A FIRST FOR EUROPE - Sweden's Northvolt said on Wednesday its new gigafactory in northern Sweden has assembled its first battery cell, making it the first European company to design and manufacture a battery on the continent. - The cell is of a prismatic cell format - a variety of thinner and lighter battery - and came off the assembly line on Tuesday. - Northvolt CEO Peter Carlsson had told Reuters that the new factory would produce a battery this year "even if it means the first battery is made on New Year's Eve". - The company is aiming for the Skelleftea plant to achieve production capacity of 60 gigawatt hours (GWh) as it aims for at least a 20-25% market share in Europe by 2030. The number of gross reservations (since the ID.4 introduction in March 2021) has increased to more than 40,000 (as of mid-December), out of which over 15,000 cars were sold. - Assuming that there were not many resignations, there are still some 25,000 ID.4 buyers waiting for Volkswagen to ramp up production and sales, which is not easy considering production constraints and high demand also in Europe. - The good news is that in 2022, the company intends to launch localized production of the ID.4 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. You can see why Tesla CEO Elon Musk is so anxious to get Tesla's factory in Germany up and running. - That report, published in Automotive News, also says that, unsurprisingly, Tesla will be the best-selling EV brand, too, though Volkswagen will be the best-selling EV company, by virtue of selling EVs not just with the Volkswagen marque but also electric Audis, Cupras, Skodas, and Porsches, too. - Sales of the Model 3 jumped 84 percent to 113,397 through November, according to data from JATO Dynamics market researcher. Volkswagen's ID3 compact hatchback is likely to be at No. 2. ID3 sales rose 125 percent to 63,109 in the first 11 months.The Renault Zoe, 2020's best-selling EV is on track to be No. 3. For those not in the know, the Ryzen (formerly Atom) is responsible for handling infotainment duties on Tesla EVs. It's directly responsible for the screen's responsiveness when activating menus, playing games, loading apps like YouTube or Netflix, and swiping around the navigational map. - The first Model 3 and Y vehicles with MCU3 (Infotainment Computer with AMD Ryzen) are now being produced and delivered in North America! - One other notable change coming alongside the Ryzen chip is the inclusion of a new, smaller Li-ion battery to power the vehicle's 12-volt system. This replaces the antiquated 12-volt lead-acid batteries found in almost every other internal combustion engine vehicle and previous Teslas. The Li-ion battery, which is shared with newer Model S and Model X vehicles, weighs just 4 pounds compared to 27 pounds for its lead-acid predecessor and should last the life of the car (instead of 2 to 4 years). RIVIAN TARGETS $53BN VALUATION IPO - Rivian, the electric automotive company backed by Amazon, is targeting a valuation as high as $53bn when it makes its debut on the Nasdaq, potentially as soon as next week. At the top end of its range of $57-$62 a share, Rivian would begin trading at a value higher than the likes of carmakers Kia and Nissan, and would raise just less than $8.4bn from the offering. - Amazon ranked as Rivian's largest outside shareholder, with a 22.4 per cent stake. - The market debut would also result in a windfall for founder RJ Scaringe, which owns more than 17.6m shares that would be worth a total of $1.1bn at the top of the price range. However, responding to a tweet about the blockbuster rally, Musk said Monday evening, “If any of this is based on Hertz, I'd like to emphasize that no contract has been signed yet.” - Musk's dose of cold water on the deal sent Tesla stock down over 5 percent to $1,147.64 by 6:30 a.m. ET Tuesday. The stock's still up more than 12 percent since the announcement of the Hertz deal. - a Hertz spokeswoman, insisted in a statement, “Deliveries of the Teslas already have started. Through the first eight months of 2021, the marque's battery-powered cars and SUVs made up nearly two thirds of those registered in the US." writes Robb Report: "According to new data from Experian (h/t Inside EVs), 294,218 electric vehicles were sold between January and August. That number only accounts for 2.7 percent of total automobile sales, but represents a 114 percent increase compared to the same period in 2020. And 194,165 of those vehicles were Teslas. That number represents 66 percent of all EVs registered in that time and a 79 percent increase when compared to the same period last year." As for the model split: "Model Y compact crossover (pictured at top): 105,445 of the electric SUVs have been registered in 2021. FOLLOW UP: MITSUBISHI AFTERSALES DEAL DONEA deal has now been finalised between The Colt Car Company and IM Group over the future of Mitsubishi aftersales business, resulting in the formation of a new company I.M. MAPS (UK) Ltd which will take the reigns. This is reassuring news for existing Mitsubishi owners. NISSAN OPENS 400 JOB POSITIONS IN SUNDERLANDNissan has announced there will be 400 positions, in the manufacturing team, opening up at Sunderland to help build the new Qashqai and Leaf. RIVERSIMPLE HITS FUNDING TARGETRiversimple, the hydrogen car manufacturer, has hit their target of £1.5 million they needed to roll out customer trialling of their cars. PROBE INTO EV CHARGING The Competitions and Markets Authority, is the latest to announce they are investigating the UK's EV charging business. One aim is to make charging as easy as buying diesel or petrol. Another key area of investigation is the near monopoly Ecotricity (now Electric Highway) has with motorway charging facilities. TESLA TO OPEN SUPERCHARGER NETWORK TO OTHERSMusk has announced that Tesla will open up the Supercharger network to non Tesla EVs soon. Whilst this sounds great, there are some expressing scepticism with how many will actually be able to take advantage due to charger set up and connector options. HIGHWAYS ENGLAND TO REDUCE MOTORWAY SPEEDS FOR NOXHighways England, working with the Joint Air Quality Unit, will monitor sections of the road network, which if they exceed safe air quality levels, will then be slowed down to reduce emissions. Other aspects, such as traffic management and congestion reduction will be used. However, this is another sticking plaster solution to a problem that requires more than Level 1 thinking. Lucid Motors, a company founded by Peter Rawlinson, the former head engineer of the Tesla Model S who frequently clashes with Musk, teased its commercial earlier in the week. Available in a choice of two battery capacities and offered in rear- and four-wheel drive guises, the model will also come with the three basic trim levels, plus a high-end launch edition." reports Motor1: "The mechanical options are fairly simple, with the cheapest models boasting a 58 kWh battery and an electric motor that feeds power to the rear wheels. That provides a range of up to 240 miles. Opting for that larger pack extends the range to up to 300 miles, but that will be slightly limited if you opt for the four-wheel drive variants. Those models still get a respectable 287-mile range, but they offer vastly improved performance. Where the 58 kWh RWD models will get from 0-62 mph in 8.5 seconds thanks to their 168 bhp motors, the 73 kWh RWD cars offer 215 bhp – enough to cut that time by more than a second. But the 73 kWh AWD cars are even faster, with 300 bhp taking them from 0-62 mph in 5.2 seconds. Another appealing option is the Vehicle 2 Load pack, which allows customers to use the car’s battery to charge any electric devices, supplying up to 3.6 kW of power."   I still think the party trick is 10-80% charging in 18 minutes.   https://uk.motor1.com/news/506127/hyundai-ioniq-5-uk-pricing/   SPAIN POURS BILLIONS INTO LANDING EUROPEAN ELECTRIC VEHICLE PRODUCTION "Spain is moving aggressively to land new battery and electric vehicle plants, using billions of European Union pandemic relief funds to avoid being left behind as the global auto sector undertakes the biggest technology transformation in a century." reports Autoblog: "As Europe's second largest car-producing nation behind Germany, and with the automotive sector accounting for 10% of its economy, Spain has a lot to lose as automakers overhaul supply chains and manufacturing for electric vehicles. Germany and number three European producer France are already pouring funds into battery plants, supporting their respective national champion automakers, and both Volkswagen and Renaultare investing heavily in EVs on their home turf. Of the €70 billion to be sent from Brussels in the form of grants, the Spanish government plans to spend 13 billion on sustainable mobility through 2023."   https://www.autoblog.com/2021/05/09/spanish-ev-production/   PORSCHE MACAN EV WILL ARRIVE WITH MORE RANGE THAN TAYCAN "Porsche's best-selling model will have an electric version arriving in 2023, and the company is currently testing prototypes. It'll ride on a new electric platform, have significantly more range than the Taycan electric sedan" says Car & Driver: "The electric Macan will be built on VW Group's Premium Platform Electric (PPE) electric architecture that will be used on a range of future Audi and Porsche products.  The EV will borrow the Taycan's 800-volt architecture, which allows for fast charging at a maximum of 270 kilowatts, and like the Taycan, Porsche is planning that the electric Macan will have two battery sizes available. Porsche claims that the Macan EV will have "significantly" more range than the current Taycan. Landing a little smaller than the F-150/Silverado, combined with better packaging because it’s an EV, gives us that." says ClaenTechnica. And on the Frunk: "The company says it fits “a half-dozen full grocery bags or two full-sized coolers.” In the picture, they show it holding a duffel bag, shoes, and other odds and ends. It’s not a tiny storage space at all. It’s also got LED lighting, a 12 volt outlet, and a cargo net."   And on the Gear Tunnel: "Behind the cab and below the bed, Rivian has put in another spot for gear. It opens up on both ends, and has room for the long things you’d take outdoors. From end to end, it’s 65 inches long, or about 5.5 feet (about 1.6 meters). Everyone does different things outdoors, but that’s enough space for quite a few things"   On the Bed: "Measurements from the cab to the back of the down tailgate are just shy of 7 feet, while the width between wheel wells is 50 inches. Not a problem at all. With the tailgate closed, you get that same width, but only 54″ of length. That’s still almost 5 feet, so you can still haul bikes and plenty of other things you’d take outdoors without issue. It's currently about 2% of sales in the US, but unlike the gas-engine market, which can't get much bigger, the EV market is poised to grow by swapping internal-combustion share for electric-car share: a million internal combustion vehicles out, a million EVs in.
