One city in China produces 80 per cent of the world's Christmas decorations.Yiwu International Trade City exports more than 20,000 types of Christmas products to more than 100 countries, with Europe and the Americas the most important markets for most producers. That's a lot of plastic Christmas trees, wreaths, baubles, life-size elves, tinsel and flickering lights. When Irish Times Beijing correspondent Denis Staunton visited, he found manufacturers with a clear idea of just what westerners want and the emerging trends – there's a new trend towards pastel coloured decorations, including trees. He tells In the News that although Communist Party members are forbidden from practising religion, Christian churches are allowed to operate under the supervision of the authorities. But some state schools have recently been discouraging children from marking western holidays such as Halloween and Christmas, urging them to celebrate Chinese traditions instead.Presented by Bernice Harrison. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia.   Today is Wednesday, Dec. 20  “West Virginia's Christmas City” helps make the state the most festive in the nation. Weirton's new battery plant lands a big project in California. And a grant will help restore an Amtrak route that goes through 9 West Virginia counties…on today's daily304. #1 – From BLUEFIELD DAILY TELEGRAPH – West Virginia's Christmas City is shining on a national level. A recent Fox News national report highlighted a study that found West Virginia to be the most festive state in the nation. That article zeroed in on Bluefield, which is West Virginia's trademarked Christmas City. It discussed the Holiday of Lights and other featured Christmas City attractions, including the ferris wheel, ice skating rink and Christmas Market, all of which are located at city park. City officials say the national attention will only help in making others across the nation aware of West Virginia's Christmas City. “I was pleasantly surprised, and it does further help our efforts,” Bluefield Mayor Ron Martin said. “I went through the park Saturday night, and it is phenomenal down there.” Check out www.visitmercercounty.com to learn more about happenings in Bluefield and the surrounding area. The $30 million project will use Form's batteries to store and discharge power for 100 hours, according to the California Energy Commission. That fills a gap between solar generation during the day and wind generation at night. The energy captured at off-peak times can be discharged to the grid when demand is the highest. The batteries will be built in Weirton. Form Energy is building its plant on the former site of Weirton Steel and could employ 750 workers or more. Read more: https://wvpublic.org/form-energy-to-build-batteries-for-california-project-in-weirton/?es_id=416f4390f0   #3 – From WOWK-TV – Money is coming to help restore the daily Amtrak Cardinal Train route from Chicago to New York City by way of nine West Virginia communities. According to the City of Huntington, the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Railroad Administration announced a $500,000 grant to help restore the route.  Huntington Mayor Steve Williams says the Corridor Identification & Development Program grant will help the company and the city figure out how to get the daily service back up and running, get it funded and bring economic development and tourism on the line to “new levels.” The route goes through nine towns in the Mountain State, which include Huntington, Charleston, Montgomery, Smithers, Thurmond, Prince, Hinton, Alderson and White Sulphur Springs. It is the only Amtrak route in the country with stations inside a national park. On Christmas Eve, 1741, a small group of Moravian settlers gathered together in a house at the confluence of the Monocacy & Lehigh rivers in what was then the colony of Pennsylvania. It was on that night that their leader, Count Nikolaus Zinzendorf decided to name their new home “Bethlehem”, after the birthplace of Jesus. Over the years, the Moravian settlement grew into a thriving religious and economic community that eventually became known as “Christmas City”. In this episode of Your History Your Story, our guest is Craig Larimer. Craig is a lifelong resident of Bethlehem and a member of the Central Moravian Church, where he serves on the church's communications committee. Craig will talk about Bethlehem's rich history and why his home town means so much to him. He will also tell of the many sites and events that make Bethlehem, Pennsylvania a wonderful place to visit, especially at Christmastime. On Episode 83 of No Rain Date, we're delighted to interview two people whose efforts to promote Bethlehem's South Side as a unique holiday destination within the Christmas City have truly made them worthy of being on Santa's "nice list." Nicole Harrell and Addyson Young of ArtsQuest join us to discuss Christkindlmarkt--a large, festive craft market modeled after Germany's traditional outdoor Christmas fairs--as well as a fun-packed SteelStacks event schedule featuring some less traditional seasonal offerings. Some of the cool things happening in the shadow of the blast furnaces this December are A Golden Girls Drag Christmas and the Frank Banko Alehouse Cinemas' Holiday Quote-Along Series, where holiday film classics like National Lampoons' Christmas Vacation and It's A Wonderful Life will be on the marquee. Nicole explains how Christkindlmarkt has evolved since it first opened in 1992, and shares some pro tips for first-time visitors. As always, Josh has a local news roundup, including stories about South Bethlehem's expanding restaurant scene, a brazen flash robbery at a high-end beauty product store near Allentown and a new Letters to Santa mailbox at the Hellertown Post Office. They formed the restaurant at Tavern at the Sun Inn. The next step was to bring the spirits into the tavern. Woody's family has a long history of distilling in the coal regions of Pennsylvania. His great grandmother would create Laudanum and make house calls to those with a variety of ailments. His family has a storied past of making Rye Whiskey. https://awesomers.com/144 - Show Notes You can find sourcing opportunities no matter where you go in China. It's about your attitude and your own responsbilities to make good decisions AND to participate in the development process. The Canton Fair has massive scale and opportunities. China in general is a wonderful place to source and the Canton fair specifically is a great place to go to learn more about China. There are all kinds of different product opportunities. You can really accelerate your business in China by attending a fair like this. Other sourcing methods can work too - don't feel stuck if you didn't goto the Canton fair. For example Yuwi is sometimes called "Christmas City" because so much of that year round trade zone is focused on Christmas related items. That opportunity is also huge. The trade issues continue to make news between the United States and China, but an important thing to remember is to be patient and that you can't control it so don't put too much energy into worrying about it. Things are proceeding and there appears to be a general sense of optimism to see some progress that is pro-trade and helpful for Amazon sellers and e-commerce sourcing in general. And regardless of USA-China situation there are many other choices and more coming in the future if there is a failure to resolve this issue. Remember that dealing with China regarding pricing and everything else is an equation - not a single action step to win. You must learn the process over time.
