Thanks to all listeners who tuned in through this train wreck of a season. Don and I pick through the wreckage of the 2023 Chicago White Sox season (61-101; 4th ALC) in the Hurler's regular season finale. This year undoubtedly tested every CWS fan's convictions and how much attention you can pay attention to these losers. We're not pulling punches this ep. THESE GUYS SUCK. After a bleak year, we sadly may be heading into a bleak era, the dawn of Getz. Them Hurl boys still be yakking though. On the plus side Don is back on the Moncada Kool-Aid. That's something. 2023 Credits: Dan Feeney - Host, Producer, Beni-boy Don James - Host, Don Moncada Victoria Segura - Episode Artist, Dylan Cease's #1 fan Steve Zelenko - Hurl theme music, NEW VERSION COMING 2024!!! The Cleveland Guardians lost game five to the New York Yankees. Blame it on the Rain. The matchup ended up heavily favoring the Yankees who were able to use pitchers who might not have been available if not for the extra day. We talk about how the weather hosed the Guardians in multiple forms. If there had been no rainouts then Shane Bieber could have pitched on full rest. If there had been one rainout then New York would not have had Cortes to start, but the combo of the two allowed for the worst possible outcome. Were Major League Baseball, the Yankees, and Weather in collusion against the Guardians? We may never know. We get into the hitting struggles this postseason. This team not only failed to consistently string together hits and get on base but didn't work counts or force pitchers out of games early when chances arose. They might have been aggressive to the point it hurt them overall. Game five had two significant opportunities for the Guardians to put some runs on the board and they ended up with just one. This makes one wonder if it really would have mattered at all if Shane Bieber had been given a chance to start. We end by switching to the positive. We focus on what a fun and unexpected year this was. Some of the positive finds and players who have shown they are a part of this team's future going forward. We went from having two proven bats to start the year to five or six depending on your view. On top of being the youngest team in the league, they also have fantastic minors which means that they have great young players coming and the assets to add any player that could come on the market. Today hurts but know that there is every sign this is just the beginning of the Cleveland Baseball Team's next great run. The second round has been an utter disaster for the Cleveland Baseball Squad. Nothing shows this better than when the organization gave up a pick to sign 42-year-old Roberto Perez The Mets used that pick to sign a local player from St. Edwards. The player took one spot before Giancarlo Stanton, the player took one spot after Freddie Freeman. We continue digging into why the Guardians have forfeited second-round picks over the years, before talking about the best second-rounder, the worst second-rounders, and who has been the most expensive one. The Guardians have found three All-Stars in round two and not much else beyond that. We go through the entire round highlighting the two second-round picks that failed to sign along with who was the top player taken with each selection in the round. The data shows the only time they have really had success is in the early to mid-teens. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Almost daily there is an article about a Jose Ramirez trade or tweets about why he should be traded. A year ago we made the all-time Cleveland Baseball Team. A year later it is pretty easy to say that Jose Ramirez has nailed down third base on that squad. Yet how does he compare as a hitter in Guardians/Indians history? We talk about where he ranks now, where he could rank at the end of this year, and where he could be if he played out his contract. We also dig into a few spots to look at what his ranking could be if he signed an extension and played until the age of 35 in Cleveland. No matter what happens, enjoy the time we have with one of the greatest hitters in franchise history. 2021 was an eventful year in Sport Law. This episode dives into the best sports law stories Conduct Detrimental covered. We start with some honorable mentions (3:57) being the Super League formation and deterioration; the current MLB Lockout and CBA negotiations; Bishop Sycamore making it onto national television as a scam; Kyle Beach's career ruined by the inaction of the Chicago Blackhawks by covering up his sexual assault; and Henry Ruggs terrible drunken mistake that caused a loss of life and his potential imprisonment. Top Ten Stories: 10) Evander Kane (16:03) has had a lot of run-ins in the sports law sphere this year, with allegations of gambling/throwing games, throughout his messy divorce. 9) Florida Sports Betting (20:47) was predicted by the Sports Gambling Guru himself, Dan Wallach, for being in violation of Federal Law. 8) Trevor Bauer (23:35) signed a massive contract with the Dodgers and didn't play for most of 2021 and the foreseeable future, and in similar fashion to Deshaun Watson. 7) Urban Meyer (25:54) was fired for cause by the Jacksonville Jaguars, and we analyzed whether or not it actually was for cause. 6) Washington Football Team and Jon Gruden (30:54) as a result of NFL's investigation into the terrible team culture created by Dan Snyder at WFT, and Jon Gruden's emails being the cause of his firing as HC of the Raiders. Also, will the final WFT investigation report be released, or any of the 650,000 emails? 5) Deshaun Watson (37:01) for a good majority of 2021 has been dealing with off-field legal battles as a result of 22 women accusing him of numerous lewd sexual acts. There still haven't been any criminal charges filed. 4) NCAA v. Alston (39:19) created a spark for the name, image and likeness movement as the NCAA opened the door for athletes to receive extra-permissible benefits. 3) NIL (39:19) began on July 1, 2021 and we entered the Wild, Wild West. Numerous players have struck NIL deals and because there is no guidance from the NCAA nor federal legislation, we have begun to see deals that toe the line of pay-for-play. 2) Cleveland Guardians (50:00) was a story that Dan Lust noticed right from the start, and we brought to life. The Cleveland Baseball Team was bested by the Cleveland Guardians roller derby team, and even after the settlement, the roller derby team still owns the website and social media handle. 1) St. Louis Rams Relocation Lawsuit (56:23) was easily our #1 story of 2021. Although one of our most recent, Dan Wallach's legal analysis brought this lawsuit to the national spotlight. The possibilities of an expansion team and very high damages hung in the balance as the case almost went to trial in 2022. However, the city of St. Louis received their $790 million settlement. Thank you all for an amazing 2021 journey and we look forward to what 2022 has in store for all of us in the world of Sports Law. *** Have a topic you want to write about? We explain why it is that some players are signing minor league deals right now. Even with the Lock-Out, we might see some deals occur with the Guardians. We also talk about some of the news around the league with minor league signings, rumors, and players signing overseas. We do some bad twitter takes. This past weekend I took a break from Twitter and returned to over 100 tweets, while I didn't get into them all. I explain why I think the Guardians have amazing minor league depth and very questionable major league depth. I also talk about the horrible New York trade that made the rounds last week and explain why it is even worse than you think. We discuss the Hall of Fame as former Cleveland Baseball player Minnie Minoso was added. I did a whole show on him last winter, but we revisit how he is the player involved in more bad trades for the Cleveland Baseball Team than anyone else. We go into all the candidates who were added and why I agree with the majority of them. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Our Halloween episode has Patti briefly revisiting 1995, a very scary year, in which she first built her sportsgrudge against the Atlanta Team. But now she loves “those Hammers guys” including effectively wild Ian Anderson, the magical Eddie Rosario, and the only Austin left standing. Pottymouth reminds us of the treasure that is Dusty Baker, the first manager to take five teams to the postseason, and possibly the only to prune his family vineyards *and* live through the Monterey Pop Festival at age 18 (the family station wagon made it too). Altuve makes moves on postseason homerun records, but Manny being Manny seems safe for now. Get your taco on Thursday - Thanks, Ozzie.Odd for us to give credit to Bob Nightengale but he earns it for not using Atlanta's team name in his USA Today pieces. The Hammers miss an opportunity to truly honor Henry Aaron by not announcing a team name change during the ceremony. Fox makes no effort to Chop the Chop, featuring it in crowd shots. Smuck and Boltz never mention it, or the war chant, while openly discussing the cheating chants. Rob Manfred defends it based on local markets and perceived support by the *regional* Native American community -- for a National Pastime? There's now footage of a certain former president joining in on the Chop, albeit badly, so that's really all you need to know. Please PETA, use your powers for good instead of distracting us with your push to rename the bullpen the “arm barn.” Although that did give us a gem of a tune from Grant Brisbee. We are looking forward to seeing how much the Cleveland Baseball Team will have to pay the local roller derby team for use of the name “Guardians.” It's going to be fun to watch Bob Melvin manage the Padres, a team with money, and we've got our eye on Raquel Ferreira in the Mets GM conversation. The MLBPA's Player's Choice awards feature Ryan Mountcastle among other Patti BFs. The untimely passing of NESN broadcasting great, Jerry “Rem Dawg” Remy brings all the feels for Pottymouth, including some warm and hilarious memories.Do you have the MLBTV postseason package? You could be watching Dominican winter ball! LIDOM features Tio Albert, Fernando Rodney, and Willi Castro this year -- no excuses. Pottymouth's Cardenales de Lara are undefeated in the LVBP, and finals have started in the Puerto Rican women's league. Pottymouth celebrates it all by teaching us baseball vocabulary in Spanish. We say Halle Berry, Kiss the Sky, and vegan hot dogs.Get vaxxed, fight the man, and find us on Twitter @ncibpodcast, on Facebook @nocryinginbball, Instagram @nocryinginbball and on the Interweb at nocryinginbball.com. 1) Trip around the majors talking about Luke Voit who the Yankees might not offer arbitration to. We talk about Jake Bauers, who was waived by Seattle. 1) Pat joins me so we can talk about the Indian's loss. We talk about top performers. Also, why the wins and losses right now don't matter as much as player performance.2) We discussed the announced proposal by MLB including a salary floor. We talk about how all might not be what it seems and why the floor could be very interesting in general for the Cleveland Baseball Team.3) We end with a prospect discussion focused on the big three Latin players and the pitching in the system in general.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. 1) Pat joins me so we can talk about the Indian's loss. We talk about top performers. Also, why the wins and losses right now don't matter as much as player performance. 2) We discussed the announced proposal by MLB including a salary floor. We talk about how all might not be what it seems and why the floor could be very interesting in general for the Cleveland Baseball Team. 3) We end with a prospect discussion focused on the big three Latin players and the pitching in the system in general. In the spirit of the Cleveland Baseball Team changing their name, we discuss some of the worst sports team names and mascots in history.
The ROADMAP: 3:35 - The “Cleveland Guardians” Battle. The Cleveland Baseball Team (formerly the Indians) announced that they were changing their name to the Cleveland Guardians. The only problem was… there was ALREADY a team with that name, a roller derby team who appears to STILL own ClevelandGuardians.com and associated social media accounts… and are posting to them AFTER the announcement! You'd think a billion dollar MLB franchise would have the resources to buy out a lowly roller derby team— and the foresight to do that AHEAD of time but seemingly did not. It's David v. Goliath.. and David seems primed to get PAID. We discuss how big of a mistake occurred and how it happened. (More on ConductDetrimental.com courtesy of Zak Kurtz) 20:11 - Big Deshaun Watson Update. This week, 10 more women went directly to the police department with criminal complaints of sexual assault, 8 of which had already filed civil suits but 2 of them had not… increasing the overall number of alleged victims to reportedly 24. This comes at a time when Watson finally made the decision to come to Houston Texans camp and step back in to the public realm. The pressure is now on both Roger Goodell and the District Attorney's Office to make a decision as to his status — yet we have no update or a timeframe on a decision. There are rumors that teams are lining up to trade for Watson but we don't necessarily buy it. We compare what's going on over in MLB with their handling of the Trevor Bauer allegations. And what is Tony Buzbee's gameplan here? (ConductDetrimental.com article courtesy of Jordan Ivner) 40:59 - Texas & Oklahoma Sign The Divorce Papers. The first formal step in the process of conference musical chairs has occurred. Texas & Oklahoma have advised the SEC of their intention to leave the conference. The next step is a formal vote according to the conference bylaws. There are so many questions about what happens now and the causes of action that could result: tortious interference, anticipatory breach, etc. We go over the massive damages calculation as well. And for college sports, how will the BIG 12 even exist as a Power 5 conference with only 8 schools left. The vultures are circling. We break it down. 49:44 - The NFL's Controversial New Vaccination Rules. Last year, the NFL season was disrupted on countless occasions with COVID issues with games delayed or moved weeks back. This kind of scheduling chaos is bad for the players, bad for the team, and for the NFL — it's bad for business. Last year, the NFL threatened the loss of draft picks for a team if a player violated the health and safety protocol. This year, they are taking it to the next level by going directly after players and staff wallets' who fail to get vaccinated. You can be a high profile player like DeAndre Hopkins or a lesser-known coach like Rick Dennison, there are no exception. We debate. (Articles courtesy of Michael Lawson & Hunter Bedard) 57:16 - What to Watch For: Dan Lust's Sports Law Class about to start and introducing a new segment Legal Life Advice! *** Have a topic you want to write about? The Cleveland Baseball Team officially becomes the Guardians, which requires footnotes (but we've got'em). It's always Women in Baseball Week for NCiB, but this week it is official for the rest of the world. We re-cap the wildly successful Baseball for All Nationals and preview some steps to making college baseball more possible for women. We rant a little about the criticisms of the groundbreaking all-woman broadcast team that called an Os/Rays game last week, and give Patti's former BF Anthony Santander some props for knowing what's up. Pottymouth presents the obligatory Kiké Hernandez Appreciation Segment, and Jon Lester's 2 run homer gives us an opportunity to name check Big Sexy.We give explaining the Oakland A's current status re the Port and the Strip our best shot. Our proposed scenario is drop an expansion team into Vegas because how cool would that be, and figure out how to keep the A's where they belong. Montgomery, AL pickles their AA Biscuits to become Montgomery Kimchee for a day, to honor Korean culture. The CPBL is back, but Mitch Lively and the All Star Game are not, so our excitement is tempered. Olympic Baseball is about to start, but the Hobbit House may cramp Pottymouth's ability to watch. But she'll be in a frickin' HOBBIT HOUSE. In our Police Blotter, CLE reliever Nick Wittgren, his wife, and children are all targets of online death threats because of a “bad day at work” and this needs to stop. Starlin Castro's administrative leave and domestic abuse investigation continue on, and the hearing over Trevor Bauer's restraining order gets kicked down the road. Did we need to know the color of his suit or that the Dodgers' may enjoy some salary relief if he is suspended? Not so much. We do want to know what women were consulted as part of his vetting process. Hey, the NFL is going to fine unvaccinated players almost $15K if they violate COVID protocol. We begin today's show with Nick Handley...and he is NOT a happy camper because his Cleveland Baseball Team has a new name and logo and it's not great. We then get into continuing coverage of the Big Ten Media Days taking place in Indianapolis. Sam McKewon from the Omaha World Herald joins the program to talk all things Big Red and Big Ten Media Days including the relationship between Frost and Albert, a possible end to the sell-out streak and a chance at expansion in the Big Ten.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
We start off the show with my experience watching and booing the Houston Astros live in person. That leads us to my official boycott of the Cleveland Baseball Team's security department as they ruined our fun. We then do a little NBA Finals preview and we also get lost in another baseball discussion, as is customary at this point. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

It's been 73 years since the Cleveland Baseball Team won a World Series. And while it might be little consolation to the Cleveland faithful, that 1948 team was worthy of a compelling book. So on today's episode, I'm joined by baseball author Luke Epplin who has written the compelling book that squad deserves. It's called Our Team: The Epic Story of Four Men and the World Series That Changed Baseball. In it, Epplin recounts the three-team pennant race that summer, the one game playoff victory over the Red Sox that gave Cleveland the pennant, and how they became the first integrated team in baseball to win a World Series. But more than that, it's a story about four of the most fascinating Hall of Famers in history. Larry Doby broke the American League's color barrier the previous year and 1948 is when he put his name on the map. 42 year old Satchel Paige had spent his entire career journeying through the Negro Leagues and that summer, he proved to the nation that he still had it. After creating his own legend as the all-American success story, Bob Feller saw his reputation start to dim in the year of his team's greatest triumph. And through it all, Bill Veeck ran the show and made baseball a better game for everyone. You'll really love this discussion and you'll love the book! Order Our Team here. It means don't worry about the Browns having to cut Sheldon Richardson, this team is positioned to be fighting deep into the postseason for quite some time. Terrestrial: Hour 1 (begins around 0:23:00) Browns were thinking ahead with how much they spent on free agency because the overall talent in the 2021 Draft is looking like it's going to be historically bad. The Cavs have a chance of being the 10th seed and how the next couple weeks go will tell us all we need to know on whether that chance is for real, or if it's time to start preparing for next year already. Anthony Edwards is not only our vote for NBA ROY, he's also proven (again) he gets our vote for best rookie soundbites, too. Part 2 of 3 of the Podcast only content – If everyone sees, feels, tastes and hears the world slightly different from one another, how can we ever expect to agree on anything ever? The Plotaholics Sports Block continues this week as Bryan and Shane get into the official Plotaholics Time Machine to go back to the magical world of 1989 to visit Major League, starring The Substitute, Tiger Blood, Blade, Thor's Mom, and Michael J. Fox's aunt. In this film the unlikable owner of the Cleveland Baseball Team hatches a nefarious plot to put together the worst team to take the diamond since the Bad News Bears as a ploy to make them bad enough to finish dead last all so she can move the team to Miami. Yeah, kids--there didn't used to be a baseball team in Miami back in 1989. Unfortunately, the team decides they're going to win despite her. There's casual stalking, harassment, and all kinds of shenanigans in this sports comedy classic for you to enjoy! So sit back, relax, and listen to the guys go JUUUUUUUUUST a bit outside with this one!Random topics of conversation:Justice League: The Snyder CutFalcon and the Winter SoldierThat time Peyton Manning hosted SNLLebron James talking about Cleveland in TrainwreckMTV's Rock N' JockThe episode of Always Sunny in Philadelphia when the gang turns blackSupport the show (https://plotaholics.com)
