Paul talks to Eric Ressler, the founder and CEO of Cosmic, a social impact creative agency designed to help organisations to create real change by maximizing their impact through design, brand awareness and action. Eric talks about the role that technology is playing in changing the world, and the positive impact that it can have upon making society better. KEY TAKEAWAYS Many believe that people of a certain age are put off by technology, and the speed at which innovation is happening, but this is a generalisation that Eric has found to be untrue.  Social media and similar channels are constructed in a way to be addictive to humanity. We are encouraged, not always through positive means, to interact often, and once snared into its grasp, it can be difficult to escape. It is difficult in today’s society, to develop a career without some element of technological interaction. But technology must be seen as a tool to empower free information. If organisations take steps towards leveraging digital as a platform, embracing it as a core element to their business and shaping their culture around it, it can help to move their message forward in incredible ways. BEST MOMENTS ‘Digital and the internet and technology is shaping and changing culture and connecting us more, globally’ ‘It’s not whether we can or we can’t. It’s whether we believe we can’ ‘We’re seeing technology and the internet really transform culture completely’ ’It really starts with an idea about a better future and what that looks like' VALUABLE RESOURCES Mastering The Game Of Life   Eric Ressler LInkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/cosmiceric/ Cosmic - https://designbycosmic.com ABOUT THE GUEST Eric Ressler is the Founder and Creative Director at Cosmic, a Social Impact Creative Agency.  Cosmic empowers social impact organizations to catalyze real world change by helping them nail their impact story, build brand awareness, and inspire action. By and large, the traditional strategies and approaches in the social impact space are still based on what worked well in the pre-digital era.  This leaves many organizations under-resourced, siloed, and struggling to reach their full impact potential – because they are not leveraging the power of our current global digital culture.  Cosmic helps future-thinking social impact organizations understand this paradigm shift and rethink their model and approach to multiply their impact. Eric got his start in design from a very young age, and after leaving a design program in San Diego early to pursue freelance work, cut his teeth running a freelance business in the digital design space.  After organically building a strong roster of clients, he discovered a passion for the social impact and philanthropic space.  Through working with numerous organizations across this sector, he found that often their missions and visions are strong, but their efforts are stymied by ineffective communications philosophies and practices.  Now, Eric and Cosmic are on a mission to help social impact organizations across the globe navigate a rapidly changing world. Contact Eric via: www.designbycosmic.com ABOUT THE HOST One thing that’s never been attached to Paul is the label ‘normal’ – something he is totally aware of.  He definitely subscribes to being one of those mentioned the iconic ‘Think Different’ Apple commercial narrated by Steve Jobs in 1977: “Here's to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes... the ones who see things differently -- they're not fond of rules.  You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can't do is ignore them because they change things... they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do!” Paul has a long and distinguished history of coaching & mentoring – particularly focusing on helping people make the transition from pain to purpose; a journey he has made himself, from the depths of a deep dark existence, to now living a life of happiness and prosperity. Through this Mastering The Game Of Life podcast, and books he has been involved in – including being a best-selling co-author – Paul also helps others to get their own inspirational messages and stories out into the world; as well as offering support to many charitable organisations, in their development & fund-raising.   “Remember – Mastering The Game Of Life Starts, By Embracing Our Hearts!” CONTACT METHODS Tel: +44 (0) 115 7270101 E-mail: Paul@Paul-Lowe.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/IAMPaulLowe Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/IamPaulLowe/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/paul-d-lowe-7a78332a/  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 28, 2020 21:04

Let's remember that a movement was fostered thanks to what happened in the hospitality industry.   Back in 1960, four young black men, who became known as "The Greensboro Four" had the courage to sit at a "Whites Only" lunch counter at a Woolworths in Greensboro, North Carolina. Woolworths refused to serve them so by the third day, hundreds showed up. Then it turned into thousands. Then it turned into a movement. A catalyst for the Civil Rights Movement which swept the United States.   Sound familiar?   While realization came that segregation was wrong, as soon as it hurt the economics of a business, things changed. Because it always starts in restaurants and retail since that's the common denominator among races and classes. It doesn't matter where you live or what you wear, but essentially everyone can afford a double macchiato at Starbucks.   On this episode of "Tip Not Included", Host Eric Levine is back to address the social unrest taking place today and questions "Where's The Beef"? while asking "What's Your Beef"?    Well, the beef has been growing for years, with windows, souls and backs being broken in the process. The beef is being shouted loud and clear across the country on racial inequality and racial injustice. Especially in the restaurant industry where its workers (along with convicts) make 30% below minimum wage.    Hey, it's not called "slave wages" for nothing.   So in this time where our society is being unmasked while we're being asked to don one, it's worthwhile asking how stunned you are -- without a stun gun -- that people are taking to the streets to voice their beef. Blacks, Whites, Asian, Latinos. Even vegans.   Contact Eric at: erictipnotincluded@gmail.com

For doing nothing but just investing.    Take our advice and go into a brokerage house or your local bank and open up a Roth IRA which will give you tax free deductions and growth. Especially if you have young kids. You'll start saving and earning and come out with a wad of money at the end of the decade. Point is, you have to start planning ahead!  Remember that money equals freedom. Try liquidating that shoe collection. You don't have to buy Bobbie Brown. That Maybelline lipstick is good enough. You're going to kiss it goodbye anyway. Invest that money so you can dance on the street and not on a pole.   You'll feel better about controlling your destiny when you start controlling your money.   And while we're on the subject of destiny, take a lesson from those that wrote their own, by making comebacks. Henry Ford's first company went bankrupt and his second ended in disaster. Disney's first company went bankrupt too and faced some lean years before his eventual success. Sly Stallone was once homeless living on the floor at the Port Authority bus terminal and even sold his dog for a little cash to survive! And what about Oprah who was told she was unfit for television news?   They all have comeback stories. What's yours?   Contact Eric at: erictipnotincluded@gmail.com

The bathroom attendant at the strip club makes $15 an hour wiping jizz off your pants but the guy serving chicken nuggets to your kids gets less than minimum wage.   Gee whiz. Or maybe, jizz whiz!   And those seated nail salon ladies make minimum cleaning the shmutz underneath well heeled clientele's toe nails but the kid busting his ass serving drunk frat boys at at Friday's doesn't. What gives?   Despite the unfairness, servers have dreams. And dreams do come true. Like those of Omar the Comedian, who joins Host Eric Levine on this episode of Tip Not Included.   Omar Thompson aka Omar the Comedian, and long-time Levine friend, saw comedy as a "high" from an early age. He's been at it for 16 years with some exciting projects in the works.   Yes he has talent, but he also has a bad-ass wife who supports his habit. She's a teacher, mother to their young daughter - and one on the way, and keeps the house working. A house with 6 bedrooms and an in-ground heated pool. Not bad for someone who grew up in the projects.   As a former server, Omar knows the importance of tipping. He also knows that treating the wait staff well will get nice things said about you to patrons and gig bookers.   Hear the conversation between Omar & Eric. You may be inspired yourself to get out of the restaurant biz and get behind the mic.   Contact Eric at: eric@tipnotincluded.com

Not only eating at McDonald's will kill you. So will working there. Hear about the two Peruvians electrocuted at their branch?   The golden arches has had its fair share of troubles over the years. Think Clinton who got too happy with an intern way back when and happy meals no longer held the same luster. Or when the company's CEO was axed for sticking his french fry into an employee's Egg McMuffin. No reports of course, whether it was first dipped in ketchup.   If an Assistant Manager did the same, you think he'd get off with the same severance? No chance. So, quit you say. It's just a stepping stone anyway which isn't a real job. But where's he to go? It has nothing to do with race or age. It's that we're all just playing under different rules.   And speaking of playing, over at Uber, they recently released a study indicating over 30,000 ride sharing customers were touched, fondled or sexually harassed. Does this mean you can now order condoms on UberEats? You just wanted to go to your job interview and the driver wanted to take you to third base.   On this, the milestone 40th episode of Tip Not Included, Host Eric Levine dives into the insanity in the workplace and reminds us that the richest poorest people around still have hopes and dreams. Hopefully, in the new year, they'll achieve them.   Contact Eric at: eric@tipnotincluded.com

If you've worked in the restaurant industry, you're no doubt able to complete the sentence: "You certainly know when it's time to replace a manager, when..."   In fact, you probably have multiple ways of finishing it off. As many ways as the reasons why managers have been finished off!    Let's see, how about you usually know when it's time to replace a manager when he's hiding from customers and staff in the office, watching porn or buying lawn furniture on Amazon. Or, when he's hitting on the cute new waitress (and in some cases, waiter). Or not lifting a finger when everyone else is busting their asses.   But hey, managers don't have it so easy though. They're underpaid and overworked. And working while everyone else is celebrating. They don't have Bernie and AOC shouting for their rights. Servers get tips and overtime. All a manager gets is pissed off. So, they succumb to their small penis syndrome.   On this episode of Tip Not Included, Host Eric Levine maneuvers through the brain of the restaurant manager and uncovers what he goes through, and its impact on employees. Since psychopaths make up 15% of bosses, and it has been documented that the effects of having a bad boss are akin to having PTSD, let's just say it ain't a pretty scene.   Contact Eric at: eric@tipnotincluded.com

We're not trying to tantalize you with our headline or to shock you with a provocative thought. We're merely stating a fact. A fact with which you can't disagree.   When you think about it, sex is what's selling menu items at restaurants across America since 70% of servers in the US are women and the lion's share of those buying meals and tipping are men. And many a woman server knows what sells and uses her charms to her advantage.   So who is responsible for this episode's headline (and truism)? None other than Rachel Siggers, a young woman who started her restaurant career at age 17, who has seen the seedy side of the industry, and spills the beans on what happens between server and customer on this latest edition of Tip Not Included with Host, Eric Levine.   It was the over sexualized environment of the restaurant industry, in fact, that lead Rachel to leave it. While she wore a mask when she waited tables and saw the money flow in, she eventually recognized that the biz didn't energetically jive with other elements in her life. For Rachel, the restaurant world was a step, something you do in the meantime, or as she says "the in between time" to get to where you need to be.   While Rachel got out, many women who stay are victims of sexual harassment from their co-workers or management, with the staggering statistic of 1/3 of restaurant workers saying they don't report such harassment  out of fear of losing an income-making shift or of retaliation. Eric shares some heartbreaking letters from those who have suffered in silence.   The take away: If you see something, experience something...Say something! Don't know what to ask or whom to turn to, then ask Miss Google.   Contact Eric at: eric@tipnotincluded.com

Terri talks to Eric Quon-Lee about he was drawn to the US from Canada because of his need to go faster. Terri and Eric talk about how globalization has shaken people’s foundations making them revisit their values which can be very uncomfortable and resisting bias takes effort. Who is Eric Quon-Lee? Eric Quon-Lee is a seasoned cross-border management consultant currently based in San Francisco, CA with several years of management consulting experience primarily in finance, strategy and operations.    Prior to his current role, Eric worked for several leading Canadian corporations in aerospace, telecom and financial services. In his spare time, Eric is highly involved in the startup ecosystem in the San Francisco Bay Area as well as globally as a “super-connector”. Eric has a MBA from the Rotman School of Management – University of Toronto.   Show Highlights If Eric could wave a magic wand, he would give more people more opportunity to do what they want to do and pursue their hopes and dreams. Eric talks about how innovation looks different in geographic locations outside of the Silicon Valley which is good for innovation. Eric thinks that other geographic areas shouldn’t simply copy and paste the Silicon Valley model but should encourage people to innovate and think differently. Terri talks about mentoring the Ada program in Berlin, Germany and seeing what the mindsets are for those who aren’t raised in the Silicon Valley. Eric’s mindset drew him to Silicon Valley from Canada where he grew up. He was always drawn to the US. He wanted to go faster. Eric talks about an interesting tipping point and we should start to work more collaboratively Eric comments on how in the US, we have more of a mindset of figuring it out as we go along versus in Canada, where society is based on peace, order and government (POG) which limits speed. Right now in the US, people are having their mindsets and value sets challenged and we need to get people to think less about stereotypes and appreciate people as people. Terri asked Eric if he heard the term ‘wanta-preneur’ which is a new term for her. Eric’s book is Ideate Your Career and we will share a link in the show notes (see References). Eric thinks the only way you get better is through practice and this leads to building your risk tolerance. We limit people’s ability to do this by expecting perfection and have scare people from taking risks. Eric thinks that there are a lot of things that are funded in the Silicon Valley that shouldn’t be funded and perhaps we should focus on funding the really hard things. Terri asks Eric if we have diluted the system by investing in non-billion dollar ideas. He said no because there are multiple layers and multiple models. Eric talks about how patterns make us comfortable and this is where we fall down. It takes effort to break out of the patterns and resist the bias which is hard work. Eric comments on how our education system doesn’t teach critical thinking which is a necessary skill especially in our society today. We need to make it more comfortable for people to fall down and fail and learn how to get back up. Terri talks about how she is encouraging her son to pursue philosophy or political science in college to learn how to think which has become a valued skillset. Terri shares how bored her daughter was in school and how it affected her behavior and how they decided to do independent study for the rest of her 8th grade to provide more stimulating learning. Eric writes in his book about everyone needs capability, experience and network to be a fully functional human being. Eric talks about how much of the societal unrest is because people’s foundations have been shaken or cracked within globalization.   Terri’s Key Takeaway Globalization has led to some of the societal unrest as people have lost their individual or community foundations and need to find a different way to feel stabilized in the world.   References in the Podcast Ada: https://www.ada-accelerator.com/ Ideate Your Career: https://www.amazon.ca/Ideate-Your-Career-There-Straight-ebook/dp/B078GSTPNF Eric’s website: http://quon-lee.com/index.html Eric’s newsletter link: http://quon-lee.com/newsletter.html   Contact Eric can be reached through LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/equonlee/ or through his website at http://quon-lee.com/index.html. The legal profession is evolving and yet, so many of the ethics rules can’t seem to keep up. They are simply outdated and need a 21st century facelift.  I’m joined by Eric Cooperstein, an ethics consultant and practitioner in Minneapolis, and we explore the relevance of several of the ABA Model Rules. We also offer our own insight on how these rules can be updated to reflect the realities of the legal profession today. What We Discuss in This Episode: Why the rules need to be updated in order to spur innovation in the legal profession How Rule 5.4 as it currently stands affects who lawyers can share profits with (even when it comes to their own paralegals) What is Rule 5.4 designed to protect against? Is that still a relevant concern nowadays? How other rules, like Rule 4.2 - communication with a represented person, and Rule 4.3 - dealing with an unrepresented person, contradict Rule 5.4 Why the belief that lawyers are improperly influenced by third parties is not based on any empirical data How legal companies run by non-lawyers aren’t restricted like lawyers are so they’re able to innovate faster Rules restricting practicing in multiple jurisdictions unless admitted to those bars - are they unrealistic in our current legal climate? Are lawyer non-compete agreements beneficial? Resources Mentioned:  Bates v.
