In this latest episode of our monthly series, PM Talks, Patrick Rhone and I further explore the delicate balance between urgency and – more notably this time around – importance in our lives. We explore how navigating these two forces impacts everything from birthday parties to home renovations and even our evolving relationship with AI. The conversation is a continuation of themes we've discussed in previous episodes, with a focus on how urgency often overshadows importance—and what we can do about it.Patrick and I share real-life examples of how urgency and importance collide and how we can use experience and foresight to manage both effectively. Whether it's deciding on the timing of a milestone event or understanding when to address home issues, the key takeaway is learning to prioritize what truly matters.Key Discussion Points The distinction between urgency and importance, and how unchecked importance can turn into urgency. Why milestone events, like turning 50, often bring urgency and importance into focus. Real-life examples of how to manage urgent and important tasks, from home repairs to birthday celebrations. The role of communication in defining urgency and importance, both for ourselves and when dealing with others. How AI plays a role in shaping our responses to urgent versus important tasks. The concept of removing emergencies from your life to reduce stress and stay focused on what truly matters. In this episode, Patrick and I aim to help you better understand how to manage the tension between urgent and important tasks in your own life. In this episode Mark interviews bestselling author Bobby Hutchinson about her unique journey through traditional publishing and self-publishing. Prior to the interview, Mark shares comments from recent episodes, a personal update, welcomes new Patron Skye MacKinnon and a word about this episode's sponsor. This episode is sponsored by patrons of the Stark Reflections Podcast. Learn more at: https://www.patreon.com/starkreflections In their conversation, Mark and Bobby talk about: What prompted Bobby to start writing in 1980 at the age of 40 Leveraging her training for the Vancouver Marathon in order to use that time in her head to decide what to do Her experience winning a Chatelaine short story writing contest Researching which books were selling by purchasing and reading 100 Harlequin novels before sending her first manuscript in which sold right away Selling 17 more of her books after those first two Signing with a New York agent who was recommended to her by her agent Writing and selling 40 more novels to Harlequin, and realizing that since she already had the relationship with them prior to signing with her agent, all her agent was doing for her was taking 10% of her cut of those sales Realizing that her agent was more interested in selling myself than selling Bobby's novels Giving up writing for a while to start a Bed and Breakfast in Vancouver - which led to a book she ended up writing called How Not to Run a B&B Hiring a vanity publisher prior to exploring the possibility of DIY self-publishing Getting the rights back to many of the novels she was written for Harlequin and self-publishing those books directly to Amazon The importance of writing the stories that she was super-involved in and passionate about writing "Going Wide" with her publishing through Smashwords in the beginning, but then being drawn into the world of Kindle Unlimited Accidentally getting screwed over by Amazon and having all of her books taken down from the platform because of a lone title that was still published in some obscure country Reading Mark's book WIDE FOR THE WIN about a year or so ago, at about the time her Amazon sales were starting to go down Bobby's recommendation to not take all your books down from KDP Select/Kindle Unlimited overnight Realizing that at an older age (Bobby is now 83), a person doesn't need nearly as much money as they used to The Public Lending Right registration (for Canadian authors) that Bobby has registered for The question, when re-publishing older books, on whether or not an author should update them to include more modern setting, such as adding cell phones, etc into them Being excited about Artificial Intelligence as a marvelous tool that authors can use How it's really hard to properly predict what is going to happen with a book when it is published The way that Harlequin was a fantastic training ground for Bobby Writing a book about living and traveling in a van (How Not to Vanagon) Discovering her love of camping and the new memoir (Me and Calamity Jane) Advice Bobby would offer to authors who want to get started The value of pretending to be a famous writer in whatever genre you're writing Why Bobby thinks that writing fast can make you a better writer And more . . . After the interview Mark reflects on a few things that came up in the conversation with Bobby. (Well, maybe not time travel. But who knows?) She started writing by making up a short story while training for the Vancouver marathon and reading a book called How To Write Short Stories. She was celebrating being 50. Chatelaine magazine was having a contest for the best short fiction in Canada, and she won first prize, $5000 for a 5000-word story called "Pheidippides Was Not A Family Man." She then wrote a romance for Harlequin Superromance, sold it and went on to write about 60 more. With no real qualifications, she taught night school classes in Romance and Creativity at Okanagan College and a correspondence course at the University of Saskatchewan. Bored with writing only for Harlequin, she wrote three long romantic comedies and sold them to Dorchester Publishing. She also sold romantic time travel to Avon. In 2014, she began self-publishing, at first using a ridiculously expensive vanity service and then learning about Amazon. If there's a mistake to be made in writing and publishing, Bobby has made it. She published wide with Smashwords, and when KU started, she withdrew her wide books and became exclusive, accidentally leaving one solitary book up in maybe Angola. Amazon took all her books down. A begging letter to Jeff Bezos got them reinstated. She should have stopped while she was ahead and gone wide again. A year ago, she came to her senses after reading Wide For The Win, took everything off of KU and began the tedious process of putting 50+ books up everywhere else. She lives alone in a funky little cottage in Cranbrook, B.C., a small city in the Canadian Rockies. In the summer, she hauls her very small travel trailer, Calamity Jane, to campgrounds. In the winter, she hibernates. She faints at the sight of blood, although her best-selling medical romance series, Emergency, does have the occasional scene involving bodily fluids. These days, she still writes mostly romance, with a few short stories and memoirs tossed in for fun. How Not To Run A B&B, a memoir set in Vancouver, was chosen by the Kootenay Library Association as Best Book of the Year, and is now being made into a film. Slowly. She lives in the land of possibility. And she's writing faster than ever because at 83, who knows when she'll head off to seek the Great Perhaps? She needs to finish that last book on the last day; as any writer knows, that deadline's tricky! During their conversation, Mark and Debbie talk about: How much of a bookworm Debbie was from an early age, and that she'd always dreamed of being an author One of the earliest essays she had to write for school about her, her mother, and her grandmother going to visit the bears at dusk at the local garbage dump Debbie's lonely childhood growing up spending summers in the Muskoka region of Ontario, and how that helped fuel her imagination and love of fictional characters from books Her work as a professional writer (a journalist, publicist, etc) Debbie's true crime book, The Crate, which was about a very grizzly and gruesome crime that personally impacted her family Family history that includes paralleling evil from the past (Debbie's parents being Holocaust survivors) with evil in the present The surreal 2010 life-changing phone call Debbie received from her brother informing her about this crate he discovered hidden under the crawl space of their family cottage The challenge and experience of reaching out to the victim's mother and sister and learning about who she was -- which was the focus of the second half of the book How the media painted the situation in a very "blame the victim" manner The "memoir" elements in the structure of this book The process of pitching the book, and the first agent she'd reached out to who graciously spent time and energy helping Debbie make the book better for her pitch, and then recommended her to another agent How Canadian publishers are heavily subsidized by the Canadian government, which led to them passing on Debbie's book because she was no longer a Canadian resident (those publishers only get grant money when they publish books from Canadian authors) The third agent Debbie worked with who found a publisher in Colorado that worked quickly to get the book out The cover promotional blurbs Debbie got from Lee Child and James Rollins after connecting at ThrillerFest in New York Some of the logistics about the research and writing of this book The numerous live events she has done talking about The Crate, and what Debbie is working on now Links of Interest: Deborah Levison's Website Episode 206 - No One Will Believe In You More Than You, with Steena Holmes Episode 204 - Overcoming Self Doubt with Tessa Smith McGovern Episode 203 - A Rant on Unprofessional Author Behavior Episode 191 - Insights from the Immersive Media & Books 2020 Consumer Survey The Relaxed Author Publishing Pitfalls for Authors Patreon for Stark Reflections An Author's Guide to Working with Libraries & Bookstores Wide for the Win Mark's Canadian Werewolf Books This Time Around (Short Story) A Canadian Werewolf in New York Stowe Away (Novella) Fear and Longing in Los Angeles Fright Nights, Big City The introductory, end, and bumper music for this podcast (“Laser Groove”) was composed and produced by Kevin MacLeod of www.incompetech.com and is Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0
Mark interviews Simon Lowe, an author with a number of stories published in various magazines, who, after a decade working in book stores, released his first novel (The World is at War, Again) in June 2021 and now writes part time while also performing the role of a stay at home dad. Prior to the interview, Mark welcomes new Patrons Talena Winters, Rachel Amphlett, and Carolyn Stein, reads comments from recent episodes, offers a personal update, and a word from this episode's sponsor. This episode is sponsored by Findaway Voices. You can learn more about how you can get your work distributed to retailers and library systems around the world at starkreflections.ca/Findaway. In their chat, Mark and Simon discuss: Simon's recent release of the speculative fiction novel The World Is At War, Again and how it's about government declaring newer technology to be too much of a threat to be allowed How the novel is set with the world at war without there being a specific single war such as WWII - as a commentary of the ongoing "state" of war Some of the parallels between the content of this novel and the current pandemic world we're living in How the removal of technology also reduces a person's ability to "fake" who they are, in the same way they can behind the filters of social media Conceiving of a world without technology as one of of being able to focus on how people interact directly with one another The impact of external factors on the way people connect and focus Simon's 10 years of experience as a bookseller and the various formats for paperbacks The difference in UK and North American bookshop genre designations such as "Crime" in the UK which is "Mystery" in North America Mark's experience on what people were looking for when they walked into a bookstore and asked for the "non-fiction books" How, for some people, walking into a bookstore can be an intimidating experience The way Simon's experience as a bookseller informed him as a writer and within the business of publishing Decisions on which books to stock, which are based on understanding the marketplace and what is going to sell within that market The importance of not taking it personally when a bookseller or publisher is not interested in your book How thinking of the book in smaller chunks made the process of writing the novel more manageable And more.... After the interview, Mark reflects on the concept of breaking your work/writing into smaller, more manageable chunks as one way to conquer the overwhelm of a large project in front of you. In my line of work, I see many service-based entrepreneurs offer packages with similar services. One graphic designer may have a package for Instagram graphics and another for YouTube thumbnails, and another may combine several different social channels in a single offer. Even though packages may change, business owners will still likely use a similar client agreement for everything they offer. But what happens if you want to add a new service to your business that doesn't really align with what you already offer? In this episode, I review four steps you can use whenever you're adding a new service to help ensure the continued protection of the legal side of your business. Please subscribe if you haven't already. And if you like the show, I'd love it if you'd give it a review wherever you listen to podcasts! In this episode: [02:24] - The first step is easy but critical because the other steps build on it. [03:55] - Danielle starts reviewing some of the most common areas you may need to change in your client agreement. [04:58] - Does your termination provision still work with your new service? [06:49] - Are you changing any logistics with your new offer? [07:48] - With a new service, you may need to set these boundaries with your clients. [08:08] - Danielle reveals how to handle one of the bigger changes to your client agreement. [09:07] - Will you need to update your website policies? [09:53] - Danielle gives an example of when you might need to change your privacy policy. [10:27] - In some cases, you might also need to update the language in your disclaimer. [12:11] - Whenever you add a service, consider if you need to add this protection. [12:33] - Please do this first if you're giving your new service or program a distinctive name. [14:14] - Danielle wraps everything up with a recap of all four steps. You can pace in your house while you're saying the words to the song in the same meter you'll be singing them in. Cate really does appreciate her time with Shakespeare and Company! They also taught her to feel lines of a play in her body to help remember them. Writing things out in longhand can also help with memorization. Storing things in short term vs long term memory Managing a group - and creating branding and messaging It's important to learn to be able to talk about yourself and what you do and how you're good at it! Entrepreneurial people and organizers often start young - in Lynn's case, she organized a neighborhood yard sale Making the move from being a corporate employee to self-employed entrepreneur - applying what you love most about your 9-5 job to what you can create for yourself (another recurring theme around here on Making Life Podcast...) Marvel as Lynn masterfully connects everything and ties it all together at 1:02 - "I can learn anything!" "What I love about it (singing) is it makes me feel alive."

In this Q & A episode of Demystifying Diversity Podcast, Daralyse and AnnaMarie delve more deeply into the topics discussed in Black and Blue: An Exploration of the Inequities in a Broken Criminal Justice System. They speak about how the horrific deaths of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, and others have spurred worldwide protests as part of the largest social justice movement in United States history, review statistics of wrongful and conflated convictions of BIPOC, and speak about how the criminal justice system advantages wealth persecutes poverty. In this episode, Daralyse and AnnaMarie discuss de-escalation techniques, such as “calculate, locate, communicate, breathe, and exhale”, a system utilized by Dr. Howard Stevenson, who teaches police officers how to bring mindfulness practices to charged racial moments, and discuss the importance of reimagining the relationship power dynamics that traumatize communities of color and traumatize law enforcement officers. In the listener question segment, listeners call and email with a host of questions some of which include: How can BIPOC transcend the trauma inflicted by the criminal justice system and find personal empowerment in the wake of horrible situations? What specific police reforms are being taken by the Radnor police department? What does it mean to “defund the police”? And Is Black Lives Matter a movement or an organization? (Spoiler alert: It's both.) This episode will inspire you to interrogate your biases, embrace more anti-racist perspectives, and question the status quo. In this episode, Mark interviews Michael W. Lucas about he books he has written which range range from crime and SF thrillers to arcane tomes on how to build your own Verizon. They also chat quite a bit about Michael's latest book: Cash Flow for Creators. In the opening of the episode, Mark shares some comments from recent episodes, as well as a word from this episode's sponsor, Findaway Voices. You can learn more about how you can get your work distributed to retailers and library systems around the world at starkreflections.ca/Findaway. Immediately prior to the interview Mark shares a personal update about his recent appearance on the overnight radio program Coast to Coast with George Noory, and all the positive results that came from that. In their conversation, Michael and Mark talk about: How writing for Michael started when he was about 4 and realized that books were created by human beings and this was something people could grow up to do The evolution of getting to full time writer via rejection notices, selling more and more things, and working on the craft Michael's start in writing writing for table top games The styles of fiction that Michael writes and where his heart is in writing The many "what ifs" that Michael enjoys, such as "What if there were Orcs in 1927 Detroit running booze across the border?" What happened to make leaving the full-time role as a writer possible, which involved a lot of watching Michael's new book for writers called CALL FLOW FOR CREATORS and why it was written out of self-defense The reality that making a living is about cashflow How evening out cashflow helps reduce the highs and lows of the typical cycle of a writer's income The importance of looking at one's lifestyle, where they live, how they want to live, when making decisions regarding the amount of money they need to make, the expenses they are willing to live with, etc The special editions that Michael does of some of his books, made specifically for his readers How, if you can do something special that speaks to your people, how Michael would encourage you to give it a try The way that Michael does his crowd-funding a little differently, using disintermediation, rather than using IndieGoGo or Kickstarter How not only are all of Michael's books published wide everywhere, but that they are all also available for sale direct The sponsorships that Michael does that includes surprises, such as a gift he will send you upon the book's publication And more . . . After the interview, Mark reflects on a few things that Michael spoke about, including when you know your fans, you can feed them the right things that they value, and how people will support you and they WANT you to succeed - if you treat your readers well. Mark then shares details about how listeners can win a copy of Michael's book Cashflow for Creators. In this week's episode my guest, Isa Robinson and I are digging into some of the common myths and misconceptions around Intuitive Eating - aka - what the gym bros get wrong. We get into the nuance and subtleties of IE as a practice and discuss why it's so much more than the 'hunger and fullness diet'. Some of the topics we cover include: Whether Intuitive Eating really means eating ‘junk’ food all day long If Intuitive Eating is a ‘healthy’ way to lose weight If you can still learn to eat intuitively when your hunger cues have been messed up by diets If Intuitive Eating is compatible with a health condition How to get past the fear that you will 'freefall' or 'spiral' with Intuitive Eating {Isa on Instagram}{Isa’s Website}{Episode with Lindo Bacon}{Episode With Fiona Willer}{Follow me on Bub Appétit}{Our Intuitive Eating & Weight Inclusive Guides to PCOS, IBS and more}{Training for Clinicians}{Book in for a 1-off session with a Nutrition Counsellor}{Book in for a discovery call to learn how we can help you}{Sign up to our Raising Intuitive Eaters Course}{Sign up to our Just Eat It; Your Intuitive Eating Toolkit course}{Sign up for our newsletter}{Follow us on Insta!}

Bronze Level: J&K Productions’ Website Program Notes: EAST WIND (l987) EAST WIND for solo flute was commissioned by the National Flute Association for its annual Young Artists Competition, and was first performed by the six semi-finalists at the l988 San Diego NFA Convention. The work’s opening motif is a slightly varied treatment of the simplest of ideas – a single note which is then encircled in a flourish-like gesture by its neighboring tones, consisting of a half step above and whole step below. It is this varied treatment, though, immediately conveying a hint of ecstasy and abandon, that imbues the motif with its distinctness and recognizable quality, maintained throughout the journey undertaken as the piece unfolds. EAST WIND’s central image -- from within its ornamented, inflected, winding, twisting, at times convoluted lines, a gentle melody gradually emerges... The work is dedicated to the memory of Karen Monson, a writer, critic and friend, who died in February 1988 at the age of 42, after the work was already fully composed. -Shulamit Ran

Henry David Thoreau said: "Go confidently in the direction of your dreams! Live the life you imagined." In this episode's interview, Mark speaks with musician and writer Tommy Ray about how he had done just that. They talk about Tommy's experience of how he took a dream (an actual dream) and transitioned it into reality by listening to his heart and trusting his instincts in recreating his life. Before the interview Mark shares a quick personal update that includes: Being interviewed by Joanna Penn for a forthcoming episode of The Creative Penn podcast, which will air on Dec 24, 2018 A shout-out to Patrons of the show who support this podcast via www.patreon.com/starkreflections - By saving up the monthly funds Mark was able to order a higher quality microphone for the podcast The printed proof copies of THE 7 P'S OF PUBLISHING SUCCESS that Mark sourced locally, but will be distributing to all retailers as a POD file through Draft2Digital's new beta D2DPRINT option The "Kobo Publishing: Getting Your Book Featured" Webinar Mark will be hosting via Reedsy Live on Wed Dec 5th Mark then shares a word about the podcast's sponsor, Findaway Voices . . .In their chat, Mark and Tommy talk about: The origin of Tommy's dream mid year in 2015 that had him jumping into his pickup truck and traveling across America to play and share his music How Tommy was also inspired by books from authors Paulo Coehlo and Dan Millman as well as music from artists like Cat Stevens How long music has been a part of Tommy's life (including a memorable photo of Tommy as a young child standing next to a guitar) The concept of being "meant to live a creative life" Music Tommy wrote that was derived from the experience of following the creative dream The preplanning that involved reaching out to 100 venues Tommy had intended on playing in (but not having heard back from any of them) The two award nominations that Tommy rec'd prior to his trip (which altered his trip from a full year to 7 week one, where he drove through 15 trips and clocked 9,000 miles) Zama (population 36), the town where Tommy was born and where his father lived most of his life How Tommy's experience as a musician intertwines with his creative writing The extensive research that Tommy did to teach himself writing, and to learn about publishing and how to find support, such as editors and cover designers for his books Tommy's use of 3 editors on his book RAMBLING ACROSS AMERICA Maintaining passion, strength and integrity when the road is difficult Tommy's temporary return to a day job where he currently is: St. Croix of the US Virgin Islands The preference Tommy has for playing his own music rather than playing cover songs at the local bar The way that being on stage as a musician is easier for Tommy than the prose he shares via the page The new series of dark/horror fiction that Tommy has started writing, inspired by actual dreams and actual mental and emotional torment, starting with the book MIRROR OF PERCEPTION How you should never take this life for granted and how you can leave your mark on this world in a positive and optimistic way After the interview, Mark talks about Tommy's creativity and his relentless optimism and passion for living a creative life. He finds it fitting that, at the same time he was producing this episode he was watching his friend Julie Strauss post updates about the catch-up she has been doing on her latest novel for NaNoWriMo. What Mark loves about the past week of writing sprints in which Julie is trying to catch up for some lost writing time during the month, that love is that, as frustrated and restless as she is, she hasn't once stopped digging into the work with all her heart and soul. And she is turning the angst into hilarious and cheeky updates so many other writers are cheering her on for while being entertained by her musings of the writer's struggle. Mark then plays a short sample of Tommy's song Zama, reflecting on the creative life and the places we have all called home, lived in and loved. Episode 022: Are Hospitals Really Non-Profits? A Discussion with Dr. Craig Wax Did you know that most hospitals (or hospital systems) enjoy a non-profit tax status? Despite revenues in the billions of dollars these entities operate within your city or community with a tax exempt status including all the medical offices, laboratories, imaging centers, and billing offices that they build and purchase. Does this give them an unfair competitive advantage over for profit imaging centers, laboratories, or physician private practices? My guest, Dr. Craig Wax, is a family physician who writes extensively about health care and says that allowing these massive hospital systems to have tax exempt status is an unfair advantage they have at the cost of private practice physicians and other health care centers. He contends that not only does this property tax exempt status provide a huge economic advantage but it also places a larger tax burden on the citizens in those cities to provide all the services that hospitals require. He provides the example of a city now required to purchase a new $2 million fire truck designed to put out fires in high rises because of the construction of a new hospital that won't be paying any property taxes. As if speaking out about hospitals wasn't enough, Dr. Wax recently joined a class action lawsuit to take on his national medical society, the AOA (American Osteopathic Association) to uncouple board certification from being a member of the private organization. Although the case was not brought to trial it was settled out of court and he and the other plaintiffs were successful in ending the forced membership (~$800 annually) to the AOA just in order for DOs in the United States to practice medicine. This victory has the potential to blaze a path for allopathic physicians (MDs) to do the same for their certification process. This is in fact happening through the work of the Practicing Physicians of America who are preparing to launch a class action suit which we discussed in episode 009 and 020. Dr. Craig Wax is a family physician, writer, and radio host of the Your Health Matters radio show. He has written extensively on health care policy and history. He successfully sued the AOA freeing osteopathic physicians from joining the AOA in order to be credentialed. show notes The American Hospital: from Volunteer Charity to Tax Exempt Patronage Pit: The article by Dr. Wax expressing his not-so-subtle opinion of what has happened with hospitals and how we got here.
