For more information, email Connie@conniestapletonphd.com   S: Welcome back to the podcast, Dr. Connie! S: When you were here three or four weeks ago, my listeners loved your information and have a lot more questions so we're going to get right to it. In my opinion, today's media messages feed us unrealistic expectations of how we should look and what we should eat which then can be a part of unhealthy relationship with food. At the beginning I mentioned that this question was posted to my Facebook Group: how do I stop fighting my brain over tempting food? Dr. Connie, a lot of people refer to having a relationship with food but I don't think the concept is well understood.. Would you talk about fighting with the brain and explain what having a relationship with food means? Q2: My relationship with food seems to flow with my relationship with my significant other. When he and I are at a good place in our relationship, I seem to be better able to stay away from sweets for the most part. When he and I argue, it seems I have a really hard time not wanting to eat chocolate, candy or ice cream. What are your thoughts about that? Q3: I do well in terms of following my food plan during the day but when I come home, I struggle to maintain that healthy daytime relationship with food throughout the evening. Do you have any suggestions? Q4: I developed an unhealthy relationship with food when I was around ten years old. I started coming home from school to any empty house. I was scared, lonely and often bored at home by myself. If I ate, I was distracted from those feelings. I recognize I am an emotional eater, but I still struggle to not turn to food any time I feel even close to how I felt when I was alone after school as a kid. How can I overcome this? S: Whether you've had surgery or not, these questions can apply across the board to so many of us. Take time to think about the thoughts Dr. Connie shared and how they can apply to your daily life. Decide what works best for you. You're worth it!

AMY DONG; 22-year-old Fulbright Scholar; Author of Twenty-One Years Young; Essays; World Traveler; #GenZ Life Coach Amy Dong is a twenty-two year old Fulbright Scholar and author whose writing career took off in 2014 when a personal essay she wrote received national acclaim from The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. After a second award in 2016, a trip to Carnegie Hall, and a publication in Scholastic's Best Teen Writing of 2016, she went on to work as a magazine editor, curriculum designer, and freelance writer during her studies at New York University. Of her four years at NYU, Amy spent only two of them in New York. She spent the rest of the time studying abroad in Prague and Singapore, taking a gap semester to recover from a near-death experience, and traveling across 5 continents and 25 countries before the global COVID-19 pandemic brought her home to Houston again. To reflect on the unexpected realities of growing up, and to make sense of their most raw and intimate moments, Amy kept writing through it all. Following graduation, Amy served as a Fulbright Scholar teaching English in Taiwan. After completing her grant, she moved back to New York to pursue her interests in education, launch her young adult life coaching program The LIFE Project, and record her audiobook. JON D'AMORE; Bestselling author from New Jersey who “did it himself” CONTACT INFO: Website: www.jondamore.com BIO; Jon D'Amore was born and raised in Hudson County, New Jersey during the historic eras of the 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s…and only a tunnel ride away from midtown Manhattan. He was immediately consumed by entertainment, education, and growing up in a culture and heritage few have ever experienced. While touring as a musician during the 1970s, Jon was also a feature writer for New Jersey's third largest newspaper, The Herald News, simultaneously allowing him to enjoy the best of his favorite worlds; playing rock & roll…and writing. Nineteen-eighty-five brought a new side to Jon's life. He stepped away from the music business, used the skills acquired as a stage performer and writer, and stepped into the corporate world. Fourteen years later, Jon realized he didn't want to grow up to be like the people he was working for…so he drove to Los Angeles and spent 18 months writing his memoir, The Boss Always Sits In The Back, and the next 13 years working as an editor and script-doctor for Hollywood studios and production companies. The Boss was released in May, 2012. What followed were four years of coast-to-coast book readings and signings, TV appearances, and multiple print and radio interviews. Wanting to give his new fans a follow-up, Jon knew Deadfellas would offer a satirical turn by bringing together everyone's fascination with the Mafia and the popular world of zombies, a genre that never dies. During interviews in 2017, the author was asked why he chose Deadfellas as his second book. He responded with, “I've never been happy living in the box others deemed to be the norm. So why would I start now?” Upon the release of his third book in 2018, The Delivery Man, Jon said, “There are no mobsters. No zombies. Just some good ol' vigilante revenge…and saving America from Russian and North Korean nerve gas attacks.” After three books that kept readers on the edge of their seats, in April, 2020, Jon again changed genres with As Long As I Have Lips, a romantic comedy set amid the advertising and cosmetic industries, and the attraction older women have of younger men. In December of 2020, he released the drama Rubdown, a story of innocence, sex, betrayal, romance, trust, murder and secret identities. What does the future hold? One thing's for sure, Jon's already writing the next book, and the odds are good that it won't resemble any genre he's previously given to the public. In the meantime, Jon's currently listens to rock & roll music all the time.

Did you know that 17 million people in the US alone struggle with alcohol addiction, and only 10% seek help? Did you know that alcohol related death ranks as the #3 leading cause a death, right behind smoking and poor diet? Me neither, until I did my research! Because I believe awareness is the key that unlocks all the doors in our lives, I am talking about an epidemic you rarely hear about: alcoholism. Not only have I witnessed the impacts of alcoholism, I’ve also been an enabler. In this episode, I’m helping you understand the key risk factors that make you more susceptible, how alcoholism impacts your different areas of flow, some of the red flags to look out for, and how to get help for you or someone you love. The 4 Risk Factors that make you more susceptible to this disease: Environment (Parents, siblings, close relatives) Mental Health Conditions (Anxiety, depression, bi-polar disorder, etc.) Low self-esteem (how you think and feel about yourself) High levels of stress (i.e. work stress, family stress & being the “one”) The Impact it has on your different areas of flow: Cash flow – sending while intoxicated Work flow – decreased work performance Health flow – increased medical risks 5 Red flags to look for: Making excuses to drink (I work hard, it’s just to relax) Increased tolerance to get a buzz Strong cravings to drink that are unmanageable Continuing to drink even when it creates problems at work, with family or friends Drinking in secrecy to hide it from friends or family How to get help: Recognize your role (alcoholic or potential enabler) Make a decision to address the elephant in the room Seek outside help through a professional Local Behavioral Health Hospital for addiction Local Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) aa.org Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration (www.samhsa.gov) After you’ve listened, I invite you to connect with us in social media. I want to remind you that your relationship with you impacts everyone around you, it determines who/what you spend your time on, and if whether or not you achieve your goals. My guest on Stories Connect People podcast is Georgia Deane. Georgia's work and mission is to empower those incarcerated and provide them with the practice and tools to help recover from their trauma. Much of the basis of this is yoga. Practicing yoga can help free one from feelings of depression about the past and feelings of anxiety about the future. It is especially healing for those that have been through trauma. Georgia said we all have experienced trauma at some level in our life. As a child, Georgia's father was in prison and later her brother fell into a life of crime. Through yoga she began to experience her own healing. She founded Live Free Yoga organization something that had never done before. It is a program focused on bringing a yoga teacher certification to incarcerated people. Georgia is making a difference in the lives of people when everyone else likely has given up on them. You will see her love, passion and heart for others as she strives to use movement and mindfulness to help those in the system and teens impacted by their parent's incarceration.
