If your teen is a target of bullying, the instigator, or even a witness to bullying, this episode is for you. One out of every five students report being bullied based on their physical appearance, race/ethnicity, gender, disability, religion, or sexual orientation. In other words, prejudice. The bullying behavior can range from verbal and physical assault to casual, yet hurtful comments. In all cases, it has a negative impact on the mental health of everyone involved: the bullied, the bully, and the bystander. We know from research that ignoring the behavior or trying to stop it, only makes it worse because it doesn't address why the behavior exists. So, what do we do instead? That's what we're going to talk about in this episode. Today I'm joined by Deanna Singh, founder of the Flying Elephant, who is on a mission to empower marginalized communities. Thanks for Listening! In this episode we welcome Deanna Singh, an expert in DEI and the author of the book “Actions Speak Louder.” You'll hear about the many ways to discuss diversity, equity and inclusion with your kids in a positive and constructive way while avoiding preaching or shaming.

On this episode of Best Seller TV, author Deanna Singh sits down with host Taryn Winter Brill to discuss her book “Actions Speak Louder: A Step-by-Step Guide to Becoming an Inclusive Workplace.” Singh is known as a Chief Change Agent which reflects her belief that everyone has the ability to – not just make change, but create positive change. Singh believes that her “purpose is to shift power to marginalized communities” and her books are a reflection of the work she does and the different ways in which she's accomplished that. She adds, that the idea that if we're doing things that allow for more people to show up, and do so fully, we can all create and build things to make the world a better place. Singh also recalls that she wrote the book due in part to the massive response she received about wanting to build an inclusive workplace but did not feel like they knew how to accomplish that. The book is more than a roadmap, it's a step-by-step guide to create and make a more inclusive workplace where everyone can show up as their whole, and true, selves. There was an old adage that when people came to work, they left their families, communities, and other components of their social identity behind. However, Singh argues, the shift that has taken place in today's work environment is not brand new. She says that people should be able to show up for work as their true selves not having to wear a mask in order to conform to preconceived norms to be successful. To write this book, Singh brought together history, sociology, and theoretical parts – all blended into practical and actionable steps, ready to be immediately implemented to today's changing landscape. There are also plenty of personal anecdotes that proved crucial to weaving the narrative and making it all come together. Singh also cautions that there has to be a genuine approach to becoming more inclusive, otherwise, no progress will be made. She adds, “DEI in the charity bucket is not sustainable.” Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Having conversations with our kids about topics of diversity, equity and inclusion can feel complicated these days. Even during periods when we're not hearing much about racial prejudice in the news, there's a lot for us to learn and much work to be done to right the wrongs of racial injustice in our societies. How can you and your family be part of ongoing antiracism efforts to put an end to racial injustice for this generation? Deanna Singh has been named by Forbes as an African American woman everyone needs to know. Educated in law and business, Deanna is both a social entrepreneur and a changemaker. She tells her story of how east met west in her family of origin, her own childhood experience of racism, and how she and her family approach other cultures with curiosity and love.

Welcome to this week's LeadHERship Global show where we will be discussing “How to be an Ally” with Deanna Singh, one of America's leading experts on transformational leadership and a highly regarded leader in the field of diversity, equity and inclusion. You know, we're taught to believe that hard work and dedication will lead to success, but that's not always the case. Gender, race, ethnicity, religion, disability, sexual orientation are among the many factors that affect our chances and it's up to each of us to be allies for those who face discrimination. Today, we're going to talk about how to support people who are underrepresented in the workplace. There's no magic wand for correcting diversity and inclusion. Change happens one person at a time, one act at a time, one word at a time. In fact, it doesn't take a special skill or talent to be an ally for marginalized groups. Anyone can do it. In fact, people of marginalized groups can and should be allies for each other as well. What is an ally? An ally recognizes that though they are not a member of a marginalized group(s) they support, they make a concerted effort to better understand the struggle of another's circumstances. Listen in to this week's podcast with Deanna Singh, author, speaker and Founder and Chief Change Agent of Flying Elephant, an umbrella organization for four social ventures!

This is why I love all that American Girl is doing right now to reach girls in a way that is signifying to them. Today's guest, Deanna Singh, partnered with American Girl on a project with this same purpose. This summer, she came out with a book in collaboration with them called A Smart Girl's Guide to Race and Inclusion. Deanna is also a speaker who does some incredible work around diversity, equity, and inclusion. She hosts virtual summits where she trains individuals and organizations on how to be an ally. In this episode, Deanna and I discuss this book that she collaborated on with American Girl and many of the diversity and inclusion lessons within it. She also shares some great practical methods for talking to kids about these topics from her extensive experience. Tune in to learn more and start bringing race and inclusion into your family discussions. Show Highlights: Why Deanna decided to write a book for middle grades and partnered with American Girl. Some of her background as a biracial woman. Why it's so important to have conversations with our kids about race. How being a kid and growing up is hard work. The differences and similarities between talking about race and inclusion with middle schoolers and adults. How scaffolding and storytelling help when having these kinds of conversations with our kids. The “inner radio” analogy Deanna uses to teach kids about their internal voice. Why privilege isn't a bad thing but must be flipped for good. How parents can be allies. The Key Learning Points:1. The life of a serial social entrepreneur and the power of purpose2. The need to consider diversity, equity and inclusion as a strategic business priority, rather than a philanthropic action alone3. Three pieces of advice for financial services business looking to do better when it comes to diversity, equity and inclusion On this week's remote Risky Mix podcast, we're thrilled to be joined, all the way from Wisconsin, by Deanna Singh - business consultant, keynote speaker, and podcaster who is internationally recognized for her work in leadership, diversity, equity, and inclusion. We're excited today to hear about Deanna's eclectic background and the fantastic work she's doing to give power to marginalised communities.Deanna is an African American and Sikh American mum based in Milwaukee and is the founder of four social enterprises. Deanna explains that her first company is called Uplifting Impact, which is focused on diversity, equity and inclusion work, providing coaching and training to almost 100,000 people to date across 30 countries. Her second company is Purposeful Hustle, with aims to help people find their purpose and bring that purpose to life. Deanna adds that her third business, Story to Tell Books, is a children's book company which creates more positive images of children of colour, explaining: “Our children of colour make up more than 50% of our school-aged children, but are represented in less than 14% of books for kids. How do we change the narrative?” Deanna's two sons, aged 8 and 12, are chairmen of Story to Tell Books and Deanna adds: “Unfortunately one of our biggest marginalised communities is our children. Where are their voices being heard? We make decisions about them and for them all day long. How often do we actually step back and give them the opportunity to use their own voices.”Deanna's fourth social enterprise is called Birth Coach Milwaukee. She is a certified Doula – a type of coach for people before, during and after birth – a move which was motivated by the high disparities in birth outcomes in her area: "If you are a woman of colour in our area you're five times more likely to have a tragic experience during the birthing process.” Deanna learnt that by introducing a Doula or a midwife to the process, you can eliminate those disparities. The conversation moves onto Deanna's experience working with financial services firms around diversity, equity and inclusion. “When you're thinking about what you can do as a sector and where you can have the greatest impact, so much of it has to do with not what you're offering but it's in how you're doing the business that you're doing.” Much of her work involves helping clients to understand that diversity, equity and inclusion are not only altruistic things, they're a business conversation: “This is a conversation about how you're thinking about the new markets you're going to go into. This is a conversation about recruitment and retention. This is a conversation about growth opportunities. This is a conversation about your competitiveness and your ability to have innovation. This is a conversation about your marketing and branding.” Deanna explains that because diversity, equity and inclusion conversations are often seen as philanthropic, rather than strategic, it becomes harder to accept that there's a real business case and even if the business case is accepted, business execs often don't know how to implement the necessary change. Finally, Deanna shares her top three pieces of advice for financial services firms looking to get better around diversity, equity and inclusion:1. Agree where you are now and where you want to go? 2. Do an inventory - what will it require from us as an organisation to get to that place?3. Do it! “Make a commitment and hold yourself accountable to the commitments that you're making”

Week 2 of our "Live Big" series.
About Deanna Singh Deanna Singh, the author of Purposeful Hustle, wants to live in a world where marginalized communities have power. As an expert social entrepreneur, she is obsessed with making the world a better place and she will build or break systems to create positive change. Deanna is described as a trailblazer and dynamic speaker who is at the forefront of social change. She is an accomplished author, educator, business leader, and social justice champion! Please share more about your book, Purposeful Hustle and why networking is important to Purposeful Hustlers. “the first half of the book, we really talk about purpose. And the idea there, you know, people throw around these words, but when I talk about purpose, I mean what are you uniquely positioned to do in the world? So, what is it that you can accomplish that really nobody else can?” How does a Purposeful Hustler prepare for a meeting? “a lot of times, we have these amazing people in our network and we get a meeting with them and we're so excited and then we get to the meeting and it flops, because we haven't taken the time to prepare in advance and really think through what would be the most effective use of their time…” What are some of the best questions you have been asked when people are trying to network with you? “my all-time favorite question is what should I have asked that I didn't ask? You know, is there anything that you think I should know that might not be on my radar?” Can you share with me your most successful or favorite networking story/experience that you’ve had? “one of the things I decided to do was have two o'clock tea on Tuesdays. Now I don't think I ever ended up having any of the meetings happen that way where it was actually Tuesday. Sometimes it was Thursday or Wednesday morning or whether, you know, I think probably less than 5% of them ended up to being Tuesday at two o'clock but the idea was I was going to try and reach out to 52 people, so one a week at least minimally that were not part of my network that I thought would be really good and my network.” How do you stay in front of or best nurture your network community? “one of the things that I've been working on is trying to use the tools that already exist out there to really continue to nurture the relationship. And obviously one of the biggest kinds of tools that we have at our disposal now is social media. So, just making sure that I'm posting content that I think is relevant to my network…” What advice do you have for the professional on growing their network? “It really comes down to being strategic. You know, a lot of times I'll have people in, they'll say I'm going to a networking event and I'll say, that's great. Like, who are you hoping to meet? They’re like, I don't know.” Digital networking or traditional networking? “I will say what I have found to be incredible, and this has really been over the last year and I think I started as sort of a naysayer with this and now have completely changed my tune, is the ability to be able to use, kind of blend the two, right, through video conferencing.” If you could go back to your 20-year-old self, what would you tell yourself to do more or less of regarding your career? “One of the things that I would definitely really stress is the ability to collect and keep clean my CRM (customer relationship management system).” We’ve all heard of the 6 degrees of separation… Now, who would be the one person you’d love to connect with, and do you think you could do it within the 6th degree? “the one that would be for me super exciting would be Michelle Obama. And I do think that I could probably connect in less than six degrees of separation. But it's one of those things where like where we started this conversation about, well, what would you ask? And you know, what would that mean and what would I be able to bring to the table?” Any final words of advice for our listeners? “When I was in college, I sort of made it like a game, right? Where I would try and find the most intimidating person in the room for whatever reason, whatever room I was in. And then I made it a point to try and go up to that person and just speak to them. And I think that like one of the things that I always tell people is I get it. I understand that you're nervous, but the thing that will help you get over your nerves is practicing, right? And pushing yourself out of your comfort zone.” You can get in contact with Deanna at: Website: www.deannasingh.com LinkedIn: Click Here
