Send us a textOn this episode, we discuss Grievous Angel, the last album recorded by one of the most interesting, tragic, and influential people in modern music: Gram Parsons.   In just six short years, from 1967 until his death in the fall of 1973, Gram Parson help pioneer what would become known as country rock, or what he preferred to call  "Cosmic American Music." In those six years, he made several landmark albums with the International Submarine Band, the Byrds, and the Flying Burrito Brothers, as well recording two solo albums. None were commercially successful at the time of their release, but they cast a long shadow on the music of the later half of the 20th Century, and continue to do so today. Its difficult for modern listeners to understand how unique and innovative Parsons vision of blending elements of country, rock, folk, and (most importantly) soul was at the time because it has influenced so much that came after that its uniqueness gets lost crowd. For Grievous Angel, Parsons was able to get some of the best musicians in the business backing him. He also could recognize talent when he saw it and knew having Emmy Lou Harris as his duet partner would create magic, which it most certainly did. Released just months after Parsons untimely death, and containing some of his most beautiful, songs Grievous Angel is a remarkable and poignant album that chronicles Parsons influences and his devotion to traditional country music, while showcasing his ability to blend those influences with other genres into something entirely original.  Visit us at www.tappingvinyl.com.

David Kraai (pronounced cry, meaning crow) is a multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter and bandleader who has been traveling and performing his melting pot of country, folk and rock for over a decade. His roots stem from New York's Hudson Valley, but his music has taken him all over the United States, and at times abroad, gaining him an ever-growing fan base.Carrying on the tradition of Cosmic American Music, David's influences include Gram Parsons, Neil Young, Bob Dylan and The Band. These influences along with his unique sense of melody and lyric help create a sound that is truly his own. Kraai has been fortunate enough to release several albums and share stages and bills with some of his heroes like Pete Seeger, Levon Helm, Garth Hudson, Dickey Betts, Leon Russell, Charlie Louvin, Dr. Ralph Stanley and more.David Kraai's new album, North Mountain Rambling, was recorded in the basement of the legendary Big Pink - a house just outside of Woodstock, New York. It's been fifty years since Bob Dylan and The Band recorded The Basement Tapes there and this is the first album recorded and released from Big Pink since those historic sessions. Performers on the album include Dylan alumni Rob Stoner (Rolling Thunder Revue, Desire, Hard Rain, At Budokan, Live 1975) and Eric Weissberg (Blood On The Tracks, "Dueling Banjos"), in his final session.

On this week's episode, we take a two-steppin' deep dive into the debut LP of a true original, 1971's Lost in the Ozone by Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen. The band members came from varied musical backgrounds and interests, but they brought a love of  pre-1970s American music to the table, to including boogie-woogie blues, honky tonkin' shuffle tunes, 1940's jumpin' jive, 1950's rock n' roll, and western swing. And it is all performed so expertly and effortlessly on this LP. What made the band stand out was not only the unbelievable musicianship (by all accounts they were a live band that had to be seen to be believed), but a tongue in cheek sense of humor, coupled with a reverence for the music and, above all, a feeling that these guys truly loved doing what they were doing and having the time of their life doing it.  And it shows. This album is "fun" with a capital “F"!” Lost in the Ozone  is also a bit of snapshot in time of that peculiar era where rednecks and hippies could find a common ground in music.  Its a collection of  both covers played with earnest emotion, and genre defying originals that on the surface appear to be about the typical country music tropes that lead to tears in your beers, until you realize they are dotted with counter culture references (See “Seeds and Stems” for a perfect example). While Lost in the Ozone does contain the top 10 cover of “Hot Rod Lincoln,” the LP is little known today.  “Cosmic American Music” is what Gram Parsons called the odd blend rock and roll attitude and country music heart found on this album, and Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen may very well be THE epitome of that concept.  As such Lost in the Ozone is an album worthy of your attention and deserved of repeated listens.  Trust us, you will not regret it.

Gram Parsons called country rock Cosmic American Music; it was a little of this and a little of that, combined into a musical stew that today we call Americana. In the 70s, though, the marriage of rock and country, complete with the steel guitar and perhaps a banjo or two, seemed like an unlikely marriage. The truth is that rock and country share similar roots, but heavily formatted radio was not sure what to do with bands like Poco, The Flying Burrito Brothers, or Pure Prairie League. The DID know what to do with The Eagles, who ultimately abandoned the country in their country rock on the way to selling millions of records. Así nació “Burn My Bridges”.

DittyTV's Insights | Artist Interviews

CALICO the band is a California band in the deepest, most natural sense of the term. Specifically, the moniker (all caps, please) is shorthand for California country—as if that weren't vividly apparent from the first moments of Under Blue Skies, the group's resonant, accomplished sophomore album, with its musical intricacy, lyrical eloquence and timeless immediacy. The thought-provoking, tightly harmonized songs of founder/leaders Manda Mosher and Kirsten Proffit exist in a continuum with the seminal form Gram Parsons famously dubbed Cosmic American Music. I am super excited to be able to start featuring some music on the podcast starting with my friends Paul Mauceri and Wheeler Newman from Orlando’s Cosmic Root Collective. From their website; The Cosmic Roots Collective are three dudes from Orlando, FL – Wheeler Newman, Ronnie Brannan, and Paul Mauceri – who play a unique blend of what they dub “Psychedelic Progressive Pop from Space.” They formed in 2013 and draw from a variety of influences, including the punk energy of alternative/college rock legends the Pixies, the grungy melodicism of Nirvana, the folk styling of Elliott Smith, the pop sophistication of the Beatles, the progressive rock of Rush and Yes, and the modern rock experimentation of Radiohead, all with a bluesy/roots undercurrent. A peer once described their sound as a “Progressive Rock version of The Band.”This past August they released their first full-length album, entitled “Virtues.” Recorded in Newman’s living room during the course of 2016 and the first half of 2017 and mixed and mastered by Shaun Combs, the material reflects a significant stylistic shift from their earlier sound, which had a more country/gospel flavor a la the “Cosmic American Music” espoused by Gram Parsons. Some of the newer material has a more experimental side, as the band explores odd-time signatures and sudden tempo shifts, while at the same time adhering to traditional song structure. They play in and around Central Florida. As I explore the local music scene more and more I am interested in hearing about your band, label or club. Drop me a line and let’s chat about a possible episode of This Is Orlando. In the meantime enjoy episode 30 and let me know your thoughts. My thanks as always to Carlos Ivan for making happen and to my pals at the Orlando Game Space for their support.

Inspired by Numero Group’s compilation Cosmic American Music we felt we wanted to do a take on that theme. However, as neither of us have so much country records in our collections this episode turned out to be a little bit more eclectic with songs inspired by American roots music in general, so it will be some country-tinged tracks but also blues and folk. As we had more tunes lined up than we could squeeze into this episode we will return with a part 2 of this theme. Featured in this episode is also two contemporary artists, Part-Time Lover and Evan Haywood, as we continue with our new segment of playing modern music. Part-Time Lover will release an EP in October on Blue Arrow Records in Cleveland and included here is one of the tracks, “Magic Child”. Evan Haywood is just finishing up his second album “Perfumed Gardens” and we play “Ashes of Oblivion” from the LP.
