Today, we're venturing into the alien landscapes of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, Bethesda's groundbreaking 2002 RPG that redefined the open-world genre. We start by exploring the game's origins, tracing how a canceled tournament fighter evolved into a fully immersive fantasy epic—and how Bethesda's ambitions were scaled down from Daggerfall's massive scope to focus on a handcrafted world. Then, we dive into Morrowind's development, from engine changes and a six-person team to the creation of the Elder Scrolls Construction Set, which empowered both developers and modders alike. Finally, we reflect on Morrowind's legacy, its expansions, and its enduring influence on action RPGs and the Elder Scrolls franchise. So, grab your Silt Strider pass and join us as we travel to Vvardenfell on today's trip down Memory Card Lane! Find out more at https://a-trip-down-memory-card-lane.pinecast.co

In the history of pen and paper role playing games, no company name looms larger than TSR, creators of Dungeons and Dragons, and in the realm of computer role playing games one of the greatest publishers has been Bethesda. Our guest today, Bruce Nesmith, worked for both of these company's in their hay day, first as a programmer for TSR on their ill-fated venture into software publishing in the early 80s and then as a writer for both TSR and Bethesda. From highs to lows and back again, a true insider's view of the life of a game dev. Daggerfall is the largest Elder Scrolls game ever. Skyrim is but a fraction it's size. Oblivion could fit in Daggerfall's pocket. But the problem is that the game is very old. Luckily, a Unity version was made a few years ago, in an attempt to update the game for modern audiences. But can the old-school Daggerfall survive the modern gamer… i.e. Me? Let's find out.
Ce mois-ci dans Pourquoi Tu Joues ? je reçois Corentin Lamy, journaliste Le Monde et responsable adjoint de la rubrique Pixels pour parler de Daggerfall, du jeu de la vie, mais pas que.
This week we continue to discuss The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall. The wealthy and prominent of Daggerfall have all been invited to an annual soiree with several special guests, including the High Priestess of the Moon. Her personal detail is made up of Casariel Silverbrow and Jon Verenthall, two Church of Selune Silverstar agents who are somewhat overqualified for babysitting detail. They meet an unexpected, uninvited, guest at the gates and over the course of the evening the party proves to have more than one outsider. In today's episode of The Daily Fix, Disney has revealed Dreamlight Valley, a “life sim” featuring Disney and Pixar characters. Kinda seems like the Disney version of Nintendo's Animal Crossing, which could be very cool. What also could be very cool is a 2-hour trial of a game you might be interested in buying. PlayStation has reportedly mandated that every new game with an MSRP of $35 or more come with a 2-hour trial within a couple of months of that game's launch. Sony has not confirmed this, but it seems like the rule does not apply retroactively to already-released games. This could be bad news for smaller developers, though, as many indie games aren't that long and two hours could be a good chunk of the game they're trying to sell you. And speaking of small indie developers, Bethesda (that's a joke, they're obviously not an indie dev) has made the first two Elder Scrolls games free on Steam. Now you can play The Elder Scrolls: Arena and its sequel Daggerfall (still one of the largest games ever made in terms of virtual square miles) completely free if you don't already own it. It's your Daily Fix!
Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we begin a new series on The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, Bethesda Game Studios RPG classic from 2002. We situate it in time and then dive right in, having been released from imprisonment and sent on a specific mission. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: A few hours of play Issues covered: 2002 in games, Todd Howard's first mainline game as director, a little about Bethesda, Tim's history with the series, early games feeling open world, finding the titles generic, Brett confesses, not playing just the main quest, directing the player via POIs, self-motivated quests, interview homework, the prophecies, something is going on in Vvardenfell, name/job, situating you in the world with character creation, the census bureau, the clever setups, tutorial and usability, the death of Ultima as a franchise, Brett the battlemage, being able to pick up anything, we try to find the names of the elven races, all the skills and accidentally thieving, sleeping in the wrong bed, having laws enforced, not being able to barter because of contraband, thoughtful world-building, imagining a bigger world from small interactions, playing the good assassin, being opposed to the outlanders, coming up with concepts from the real world, coding the Khajiit as shifty Arabs, homebrew and archetypal sources, steering away from making particular races evil, slavery in RPGs, walking to Balmora, doing some quests, different architecture, Tim's sidequest to woo a Dunmer, directions to get to a quest, what is the arc of the game?, feeling like you have chapters even when a game doesn't have progression or leveling up, the small decisions you make all the time in game design, the crosshairs in Halo.
