There are moments in our collective history that will forever be a mystery...On this episode we wonder just what was on those tapes from the White House during the Watergate scandal in '18 1/2'. In 1974, a White House transcriber is thrust into the Watergate scandal when she obtains the only copy of the infamous 18½ minute gap in Nixon's tapes. Sure it's a 'what if' fictionalized story, but seeing this story intertwined with hippies, radicals, swingers and an awkward love story is actually what makes this pretty fun. From the mind of writer/director Dan Mirvish we get the unique chance to not only see what makes this story tick but him tick as well as this film is a quirky mix of comedy and drama with some surprising faces that make this all work MUCH better then it actually should.

It's a jam-packed show thanks to our special guests IGOR DRLJACA who is on hand talking about his latest film THE WHITE FORTRESS, while DAN MIRVISH is back, this time talking the terrific dark comedic thriller 18 ½. First up, take a listen to writer/director IGOR DRJLACA talking THE WHITE FORTRESS. The 2022 Oscar submission from Bosnia and Herzegovina, THE WHITE FORTRESS is a coming-of-age film set in a present day world with a war-torn history, political corruption, and no sense of hope for the young people burdened by the past. In spite of the obstacles of life, sweet romance develops for Faruk and Mina. But can moments of escape and fancy lift them beyond the White Fortress of life? Boasting beauteous cinematography and haunting piano scoring that capture both the visual and emotional history, this is a film not to be missed. An interesting conversation with Igor as he goes into detail about the history and politics of the country and the people and how that shaped this story and this film. And then writer/director DAN MIRVISH returns to #BTLRadioShow, this time talking about his new film, 18 1/2 – a dark comedic thriller about those legendary missing 18 1/2 minutes of tape, Richard Nixon, and Watergate. Together with co-writer Daniel Moya, the pair craft a fanciful "what if" storytelling leap giving us a tale where a copy of the erased 18 1/2 minutes does exist and that on top of that, the recording features Nixon and Alexander Haig talking about the tape and other things, madness and mayhem, hippies and swingers, while some surprising revelations take flight. As usual with Dan, it's no holds barred when it comes to talking filmmaking and we dive into the perfection of production design, costume design, and classic vintage lensing, as well as discussing terrific casting, performances, and voice work. But as much fun as 18 1/2 is, the parallels with politics today, sadly, give pause for thought about the current state of affairs. As our regular listeners know from Dan's prior appearances on the show, a conversation with him is not to be missed! http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

It all began when a group of cheerful, subversive filmmakers weren’t accepted into the Sundance Film Festival. Unwilling to take “no” for an answer, they instead started their own event – Slamdance: Anarchy in Utah. 24 years later, Slamdance has become a year-round organization fostering the development of unique and innovative filmmakers. The organization now consists of the Film Festival, Screenplay Competition and Slamdance Studios. Dan Mirvish, Jon Fitzgerald, Shane Kuhn and Peter Baxter are the founding forefathers who, along with co-conspirator Paul Rachman, fought for truly independent filmmakers by giving them a voice in 1995 at the very first Slamdance Film Festival. Since then, the festival takes place every January in the breathtakingly stunning, snow-capped mountains of Park City, Utah at the exact same time as the Sundance Film Festival, toprovide a more authentic representation of independent filmmaking.  Up-and-coming writers, directors and producers, alongside seasoned veterans and film lovers, converge for the weeklong celebration of independent cinema, realizing that Slamdance is a great place to find those next, great, visionary films.  Slamdance lives and bleeds by its mantra By Filmmakers For Filmmakers. No other film festival in the world is entirely run and organized by the creative force that can only be found in filmmakers. Slamdance adamantly supports self-governance amongst independents, and exists to deliver what filmmakers go to festivals for – a chance to show their work and a platform to launch their careers. The festival has earned a solid reputation for premiering films by first-time writers and directors working within the creative confines of limited budgets. Co-founder and President Peter Baxter joins us to talk about this year’s Slamdance, the groundbreaking films and the innovative new distribution being launched by Slamdance. Episode 18! I have another special guest who is the co-founder of the well known Slam Dance Film Festival, who have beautifully spawned some phenomenal filmmakers who have made big marks in cinema.  Dan is also a film Director, Producer, and Screenwriter with a recent movie out called Bernard and Huey. He is also the only filmmaker that I know of who produced a feature film for the sake of getting his previous feature film up for consideration by the Academy. He tells the captivating story in this episode as well as how he got creative when a meeting fell through by casually convincing a New York Publisher to take on his book, The Cheerful Subversive’s Guide to Independent Filmmaking. Directed by Slamdance Film Festival co-founder Dan Mirvish (BETWEEN US) from a long-lost script by Oscar/Pulitzer-winning cartoonist and screenwriter Jules Feiffer (Mike Nichols’ CARNAL KNOWLEDGE, Robert Altman’s POPEYE) based on characters that date back to 1957, BERNARD AND HUEY is the story of roguish Huey (David Koechner, ANCHORMAN) and nebbishy Bernard (Oscar-winner Jim Rash, THE WAY WAY BACK), who are unlikely collegiate friends in late 1980s New York. Years later, a bedraggled Huey crashes at Bernard’s upscale bachelor pad. As the two reconnect, Bernard falls in love with Huey’s estranged daughter Zelda (Mae Whitman, GOOD GIRLS), an aspiring graphic novelist who’s got a seductive new creative partner, Conrad (Eka Darville, JESSICA JONES). Huey slowly gets his mojo back and tries to seduce the various women in Bernard’s life, including his off-again girlfriend Roz (Sasha Alexander, RIZZOLI & ISLES) and colleague, Mona (Nancy Travis, SO I MARRIED AN AXE MURDERER), while reconnecting with his ex-wife (Bellamy Young, SCANDAL) and brother (Richard Kind, ARGO). As Bernard and Huey return to their old ways, at least one of them finds himself in danger of marrying a woman old enough to be his wife. An award-winning film that’s screened at over 25 festivals in 5 continents, BERNARD AND HUEY is a particularly timely story of two men behaving badly, and the smart women who rein them in. Director Dan Mirvish joins us for a conversation on getting older, acknowledging that we get older, love, romanced the genius of Jules Feiffer. For news and updates go to: bernardandhueymovie.com

Sasha Alexander On ‘Bernard and Huey’, Independent Films And Roles For Women

You've no doubt seen Sasha Alexander on your TV screen sometime in the last few decades. She's been a working actress for many years on shows like Dawson's Creek, Rizzoli and Isles, and Shameless.  But she's also a big supporter of independent film and tells me her latest project is a great example of what a true independent film looks like in today's fast-paced super-sized movie world.   Bernard and Huey was written by legendary, Pulitzer Prize and Oscar® winner Jules Feiffer (Carnal Knowledge, Popeye) and stars Bernard (Jim Rash) and Huey (David Koechner). As teens, Bernard is the more introverted, less socially successful of the two, and Huey is the outgoing ladies’ man. Years later, the two reconnect, to find that the tables have turned and they become entwined in one-another’s lives in bizarre ways. Alexander, along with Mae Whitman, Nancy Travis and Bellamy Young add a much-needed female presence to the film. Alexander tells me the women stepped into what felt like a very masculine story and added their own fierce perspective to their parts. After all the film was initially written back in the 80's and was supposed to be about characters from the 50's. Alexander tells me the script underwent several revisions to make it what it is today. Sasha Alexander, Dan Mirvish and Bellamy Young   We also talked about the need for more truly independent films at the box office so moviegoers don't get stuck in a superhero rut. And she tells me how wonderfully written roles for women are being done on the small screen. Alexander says she's being more particular about which roles she takes these days because her family needs are a priority. She's been a series regular on several series so she's not eager to jump back into one right now. But she says she is eager to continue to playing rich characters and working with wonderful people like Jim Rash. Almost all of her scenes were with Rash and she says he was an amazing actor to work with. If nothing else, she says you should watch Bernard and Huey just to see Jim Rash shirtless. Curious? Bernard and Huey opens in select theaters and several digital platforms on June 8th. And you can follow Sasha on Twitter at @SashaAlexander.

A fun-filled and enlightening BEHIND THE LENS this week thanks to special guests DAN MIRVISH and LOU DIAMOND PHILLIPS! With Slamdance Film Festival in full swing, what better way to celebrate indie film than with DAN MIRVISH. Not just one of the co-founders of Slamdance, but a filmmaker in his own right, Dan is on hand talking about his latest directorial feature, BERNARD AND HUEY, starring Jim Rash and David Koechner. A recently discovered, long lost script by the Pulitzer-Prize and Oscar-winning cartoonist, playwright and screenwriter, Jules Feiffer, BERNARD AND HUEY is the closing night feature at Slamdance. Hear Dan talk about the discovery of the script and bringing it to life . . . including developing characters previously experienced in cartoons and books, as well as turning his Culver City garage into a New York subway! Then we have a legend on hand – LOU DIAMOND PHILLIPS. One of the hardest working and most consistently present actors since he first lit up our movie screens some 30-years ago, Lou skyrocketed to fame thanks to turns in films like "Stand and Deliver", "La Bamba", and "Young Guns", but over the years has successfully transitioned to television (most recently "Longmire") and the stage, the latter as a Tony-nominee for "The King and I", making him a real triple threat across the boards. Lou's constant presence continues with QUEST, also showing at Slamdance. As with so many of Lou's films, QUEST is emotionally powerful, heartbreaking, yet hopeful. And while he goes against type with this performance, the messaging of the film is right in his wheelhouse. One of our most favorite guests ever on BEHIND THE LENS, listen as Lou talks not only about QUEST, but working with young actors, mentoring, working with female directors (and he's worked with many!), the industry today, how he selects projects, and more. Enlightening and entertaining, LOU DIAMOND PHILLIPS is an interview you'll want to hear again and again. Plus, hear what Gerard Butler, writer/director Christian Gudegast, Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson, O'Shea Jackson Jr., and Pablo Schreiber have to say about their new action heist thriller DEN OF THIEVES! http://behindthelensonline.net http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

The first Sundance Film Festival, then known as the US/Utah Film Festival, took place in 1978 in an effort to bring independent filmmaking talent to the state. Over the years, word spread, crowds grew, and first-time directors broke out as commercial buyers eventually clued into the potential of this latest wave of American independent film—and now, nearly four decades later, Sundance remains an industry phenomenon. But reading about its history only goes so far, especially for a festival renowned for its original mission of fostering an independent film community. In this special episode of the Film Comment podcast recorded at Sundance in front of an audience at the Kickstarter house, Editor Nicolas Rapold spoke with a panel of Sundance veterans: Ira Deutchman, film producer, distributor, marketer (of sex, lies, and videotape, among others), academic, and co-founder of Emerging Pictures; Eugene Hernandez, Deputy Director at the Film Society of Lincoln Center and the co-founder of Indiewire; Lesli Klainberg, Executive Director of the Film Society of Lincoln Center, and a documentary filmmaker whose work has been shown at numerous Sundances; and Dan Mirvish, co-founder of the Slamdance Film Festival and author of The Cheerful Subversive's Guide to Independent Filmmaking. The discussion (featuring a couple of surprise guests) covered the evolution of Sundance up through the 1990s and beyond as a force in the industry, its importance to queer media and representation, its significance to mainstream perceptions of independent film, and more.

It all began when a group of cheerful, subversive filmmakers weren’t accepted into the Sundance Film Festival. Unwilling to take “no” for an answer, they instead started their own event - Slamdance: Anarchy in Utah. 22 years later, Slamdance has become a year-round organization fostering the development of unique and innovative filmmakers. The organization now consists of the Film Festival, Screenplay Competition and Slamdance Studios. It has also created Slamdance On The Road, a traveling theatrical showcase that brings popular Slamdance films to audiences that otherwise would not have the opportunity to see them. Dan Mirvish, Jon Fitzgerald, Shane Kuhn and Peter Baxter are the founding forefathers who, along with co-conspirator Paul Rachman, fought for truly peter-baxter-slamdanceindependent filmmakers by giving them a voice in 1995 at the very first Slamdance Film Festival. Since then, the festival takes place every January in the breathtakingly stunning, snow-capped mountains of Park City, Utah at the exact same time as the Sundance Film Festival, to provide a more authentic representation of independent filmmaking. Co-founder and President Peter Baxter joins us to talk about this year’s Slamdance, the groundbreaking films and the innovative new distribution and digital initiatives being launched by Slamdance.
