Dario Franchitti has had a sensational racing career in the United States, becoming a four-time IndyCar series champion and a three-time winner of the Indy500. But earlier in his career, Dario had plenty of interest from Formula 1 and tested for a few different teams. So why didn't he end up racing in the pinnacle of motorsport? Speaking to Tom Clarkson, Dario talks about the three big opportunities he had to drive in F1 and why they never materialised – sharing fascinating insight into the negotiations he had and the tests he completed for different teams. He also discusses his racing idols, how three-time F1 World Champion Sir Jackie Stewart became his mentor and what it takes to become a complete IndyCar driver. As we continue to roll into the IndyCar off season, Conor Daly and Chase Holden are back on Speed Street with the latest driver silly season developments. Last week saw Kyffin Simpson confirmed as the third and final Chip Ganassi Racing driver for 2025, pairing him with Scott Dixon and Alex Palou. Prema Racing has solidified its two driver line-up by adding former Formula 3 Champion Robert Shwartzman to its operation to join Callum Ilott. Conor also sheds light on why teams like Penske and Arrow-McLaren are testing unsigned drivers in the off season despite already having a set line-up for 2025.Open wheel legend and three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Dario Franchitti joins the show to talk about his post-driving role at Chip Ganassi Racing and how the current day of IndyCar compares to his era behind the wheel. Dario comments that when he watches races at home as a fan, he believes that IndyCar's on-track product is second to none. He speaks on the open wheel cars of the past and how the high-horsepower was a challenge for drivers to deal with. He and Conor relate on how the old IndyCar engines sound iconic and wish there was a way for the current hybrid systems to be tuned to sound similar. Dario explains what his week to week duties are at CGR and how he works with current drivers in the paddock to improve performance. He also reflects on his 2006 season in NASCAR and how it humbled and inspired him to become a better racer upon his return to the open wheel world.
Conor Daly's “have helmet, will travel” 2024 tour continues as he was in competition at last weekend's 8 Hours of Indianapolis Intercontinental GT Challenge event. He joins co-host Chase Holden to discuss the nuances that he and Alex Palou experienced in making the transition from a Dallara IndyCar to a GT3 sports car. He explains that ultimately a fuel pick-up failure took him and the Random Vandals team out of contention after running in the top-five for most of the event. They also discuss the star-studded endurance kart race which took place at New Castle Motorsports Park, IndyCar's announcement of the 2026 Arlington Street Race and the upcoming hybrid test at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The newest member of the Meyer Shank Racing team Marcus Armstrong joins the show to discuss how the new technical alliance between MSR and Chip Ganassi Racing has moved him to the number-66 Dallara for the 2025 IndyCar season. Marcus explains that he has worked with MSR veteran Felix Rosenqvist in the past and the integration from team to team has been smooth thus far. He also opens up about the difficulty in adapting to oval racing after spending the majority of his career progressing up the Formula ladder system in Europe. Marcus explains that even though he had resources like Dario Franchitti at CGR, he as a driver still had to go out on the track and perform, and his first experiences at tracks like Indianapolis and Milwaukee felt like a whirlwind. Marcus is excited to be a part of the IndyCar Series though and hopes that the championship trail will take them to new venues across the globe in the future.
And you know it's a thrill! We are chasing a NASCAR Champion and we have an IndyCar Champion! Alex Palou became just the 13th driver in IndyCar history to win at least 3 championhips and he's just the seventh to win three titles in four years. Dario Franchitti was the last to do it in 2011 NASCAR rolls into Bristol this week, the World's Fastest Half-Mile and the XFinitySeries sets it's field for their playoffs.
Jason rides in the left seat of a T.50 and declares it the best sounding engine he's ever heard — dethroning the Lexus LFA. With which he and Derek have experience. === Click here to join the Hagerty Driver's Club: https://bit.ly/Join-HDC-Cammisa-Rev === First of all, Jason calculates his cars' brake fluid age and is mostly okay with it, but also slightly horrified at how old the brake fluid is in several of his cars — one of which is 13 years old. Whoops. Secondly, GMA allowed Jason a ride in the leftmost (passenger) seat of Gordon Murray's T.50, with Dario Franchitti in the center seat. There's video — and audio. And it's enough to have moved Jason to dethrone the LFA, which he had just pronounced the best sounding engine of all time. The LFA's V-10 sounds amazing — far better in the car than the Porsche Carrera GT, the other best-sounding V-10 of all time (with honorable mention given to the BMW S85 — and every other V10 short of the Viper's.) The boys also speak about the LFA Revelations Episode — and the history of the Lexus LFA. And of cars that ride poorly, like the LFA does. Like the Mercedes AMG GT. Learn more about your ad choices. Tonight on Trackside, we talk about Josef Newgarden and his stance in the racing world. Curt and Kevin talk about the star power of IndyCar drivers, and ratings for Qualifying and how good the streaming numbers were for Sunday. They talk about how easy it is to sit and watch qualifying now as opposed to how it used to be back in the 80s and 90s. Later in the the show, Kevin and Curt talk about NASCAR giving Kyle Larson a waiver if he cannot make it to the Coca-Cola 600. There is a rule that says that all drivers have to compete, but Larson may get a pass because of the 500 and because it would damage the look of the sport if they did not give him a waiver. They talk about Simon Pagenaud helping Scott McLaughlin, and how Dario Franchitti had to stop abruptly like Pagenaud too. Should Larson forgo his ride, would the league bend the rules and get Tony Kanaan behind the wheel? Is Nolan Siegel the only driver that could sub? Malukas said himself he wasn't physically able to. Kevin and Curt end the show talking to Kaylee Bryson about her racing career in USAC. She talks about her mentors, and her first USAC feature win. She talks about coming up the ranks, and where she wants to go with her racing career. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Month of May is here, and it's time to get through the half way point of IndyCar's biggest month of the year. In this episode, Dre Harrison and RJ O'Connell break down both the GMR Grand Prix on the Indy Road Course, and Qualifying for this weekend's 107th Running of the Indianapolis 500. And so far, Alex Palou is one step away from doing what Simon Pagenaud did in 2019 and sweeping the entire month! He dominated the GMR Grand Prix and then broke Scott Dixon's new record of the fastest pole run in Indy 500 history, with the entire front row cracking 234mph. Is Palou the greatest #10 car driver since Dario Franchitti? And should he really be considering a McLaren switch if the 2024 rumours are true? And we swing the pendulum on a rollercoaster month for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing. Christian Lundgaard had another incredible race at the road course finishing 4th, only to nearly get bumped in a disastrous qualifying session for the 500 where all of their cars were stuck in 30th or lower, and only Katherine Legge making the show automatically. Jack Harvey bumping out his own teammate, another Bump Day shock for the ages... or so we thought at the time... ...All that and some of the incredible stories that made up the grid, like RC Enerson, Callum Illot, Agustin Canapino and more mentioned in a Month of May Indianapolis special!

Moyer is a 30-year veteran of IndyCar racing, beginning in the 1980s when he swept the floors at Gary Bettenhausen's race shop in Monrovia, Indiana. Moyer was with Galles-Kraco Racing from 1989-92, working with the great Al Unser, Jr. when that driver won the Indianapolis 500 in 1992. Moyer had an extremely successful tenure at Team Kool Green, which ultimately became Andretti Autosport. Moyer played a key role in the team that include Indianapolis 500 victories by Jacques Villeneuve in 1995, Dan Wheldon in 2005, Dario Franchitti in 2007 and Ryan Hunter-Reay in 2014. The team also won IndyCar Series championships with Villeneuve in 1995, Tony Kanaan in 2004, Wheldon in 2005 and Hunter-Reay in 2012. Moyer moved over to Team Penske in 2015. Since that time, Team Penske has won three of its record 18 Indianapolis 500s including Juan Pablo Montoya in 2015, Will Power in 2018 and Simon Pagenaud in 2019. Josef Newgarden won IndyCar championships in 2017 and 2019 and Power won his second IndyCar title in 2022. The four finalists who will contest the 2021 Aston Martin Autosport BRDC Young Driver of the Year Award have been selected. Ollie Bearman, Jonny Edgar, Louis Foster and Zak O'Sullivan are the finalists. None have been in the Award before. This week on the podcast we're talking to each driver individually, and hearing about their story so far. Previous winners include 2009 F1 world champion Jenson Button, 13-time grand prix winner David Coulthard, current F1 drivers Lando Norris and George Russell, triple Indianapolis 500 winner Dario Franchitti, and 2014 World Endurance champion Anthony Davidson. Today we're talking to Zak O'Sullivan. O'Sullivan has been the driver to beat in GB3 this year. The 16-year-old continued the impressive form from his first single-seater campaign last season, when he came oh-so-close to securing the British F4 crown. He seems set to make up for that disappointment this year, as he comfortably tops the points ahead of the finale.

After a winning cameo outing last year, Foster has been racing full-time in Euroformula Open this season on his graduation from British F3, and is embroiled in a close title fight. The 18-year-old Hampshireman has won three races with the Motopark-run CryptoTower Racing Team – all of them on one incredible weekend at Spa.

He had a tough time this year in FIA Formula 3, with a best result of fifth with Carlin, and finished 18th in the points. But bear in mind that 2021 champion Dennis Hauger was 17th last year on his step up from F4…
