Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss one of the most energetic, varied and innovative playwrights of his time. Thomas Middleton (1580-1627) worked across the London stages both alone and with others from Dekker and Rowley to Shakespeare and more. Middleton's range included raucous city comedies such as A Chaste Maid in Cheapside and chilling revenge tragedies like The Changeling and The Revenger's Tragedy, some with the main adult companies and some with child actors playing the scheming adults. Middleton seemed to be everywhere on the Jacobean stage, mixing warmth and cruelty amid laughter and horror, and even Macbeth's witches may be substantially his work.WithEmma Smith Professor of Shakespeare Studies at Hertford College, University of OxfordLucy Munro Professor of Shakespeare and Early Modern Literature at Kings College LondonAnd Michelle O'Callaghan Professor of Early Modern Literature at the University of ReadingProducer: Simon TillotsonReading list:Swapan Chakravorty, Society and Politics in the Plays of Thomas Middleton (Clarendon Press, 1996)Suzanne Gossett (ed.), Thomas Middleton in Context (Cambridge University Press, 2011)R.V. In this episode of the Campus podcast, we're embarking on a journey into a realm of the unknown. A world full of possibilities and creative opportunities but not without risks and ethical quandaries. Three intrepid pioneers are our guides as we learn how tools such as ChatGPT can enhance student feedback and academic research. Jennifer Rose, a senior lecturer in accounting and finance at the University of Manchester, and David Nicol, a research professor in the Adam Smith Business School at the University of Glasgow, explain how they are using the AI generator in their teaching – while being sensitive to its limitations and risks. They use it to help students use inner feedback to improve their writing (through comparison with ChatGPT output), to save time, to make thinking visual, and to foster critical thinking and academic skills. Our third guest is Brooke Szücs, a research assistant and advocate for diversity in education at the University of Queensland. Brooke, who has autism, uses ChatGPT as “a conversation partner” to enhance her academic writing through feedback, polishing and drawing out key ideas, and even asking it to suggest journals where she could submit her work. A Future of Finance interview with David Nicol, CEO and Co-founder of LedgerEdge. The US$124 billion global bond markets seem at last to be taking pole position in the race to unlock the efficiencies conferred by blockchain technology. Much of the effort is directed at the primary markets, where the telephone plays the part it has since the 1960s and the fax and spreadsheet continue in the roles they stole from the telex and the pocket calculator in the 1980s. But the real prize in fixed income lies in the secondary market, and especially in corporate bond markets that have become a byword for illiquidity and price opacity. Enter LedgerEdge, a two-year-old start-up based on R3 Corda technology that is exciting the buy-side as well as the sell-side with its promise of a decentralised marketplace in which it will be possible to find and then buy and sell corporate bonds without expensive information leakage. After making rapid progress since its foundation in 2020, LedgerEdge has acquired its regulatory licence from the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) in London and is on course for its UK, US and EU launches in the second and third quarters of 2022. Future of Finance co-founder Dominic Hobson spoke to LedgerEdge CEO and Co-founder David Nicol. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Author David Nicol joins the GD podcast to discuss his book, Subtle Activism: The Inner Dimension of Social and Planetary Transformation, and the important role subtle activist can play for the local and global challenges of the meta-crisis. About Subtle Activism: "Can awakened consciousness contribute to social change and, if so, how? David Nicol introduces the concept of "subtle activism to describe the use of consciousness-based practices like meditation and prayer to support collective transformation, such as global meditation directed toward peaceful resolution of a conflict. Subtle activism represents a bridge between the consciousness movement and the movements for peace, environmental sustainability, and social justice. It is not a substitute for physical action but rather a potentially crucial component of a more integrated approach to social chance." What was the business of theatre like in Shakespeare’s time? We don’t have many records, but one fascinating document has survived: a book of accounts and memoranda (often inaccurately referred to as a diary) from Philip Henslowe, a businessman in 1590s London. Henslowe helped build the Rose Theatre, where a number of plays by Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe, and their contemporaries received their premieres. Now Dr. David Nicol of Dalhousie University is bringing Henslowe’s day-by-day account of early modern show business into the twenty-first century. Dave’s site, “Henslowe’s Diary … as a Blog!” follows the entries in Henslowe’s book day by day, introducing readers to plays ranging from the familiar to the forgotten, as well as trying to make sense of how financially successful each performance was. Dave joined us to talk about Henslowe’s book, the business of running a theatre in early modern England, and how he decided to turn this valuable document into a blog.

Interview with David Nicol, Managing Director, BlackBerry Australia & New Zealand and Jonathan Jackson, Director, Engineering Solutions, APJ. BlackBerry® Intelligent Security uses a combination of contextual and behavioural factors to dynamically adapt security requirements and calculate a unique risk score for each interaction. Using this unique risk score, a mobile user can be granted access to specific device applications and services, as defined by IT administrators. This provides granular control and delivers a better, more productive end user experience – all without sacrificing an organisation’s regulatory and security policies. BlackBerry® Intelligent Security utilises a range of behavioural, device and other characteristics to seamlessly secure endpoints. Some of the unique contextual factors include: Behavioural Location: BlackBerry® Intelligent Security learns the trusted locations, frequency and patterns of users based on analysis of anonymised location and other behavioural inputs to determine behaviour and location-based risk score. Locations can be predefined with a set of policy actions to be executed when a user is within the location boundaries. Network Trust: BlackBerry® Intelligent Security learns the frequency of network use and adjusts security dynamically based on that profile. For example, the solution would adjust the risk score accordingly for a user who is accessing any new Wi-Fi for the first time. Time & Usage Anomalies: BlackBerry® Intelligent Security learns how and when employees normally access data to protect against instances of anomalous behaviour. Device and App DNA: BlackBerry® Intelligent Security builds a uniquely identifying signature for trusted, compliant devices and apps, and uses that signature to detect and block access attempts by rogue, non-compliant devices. David Nicol was appointed as the Managing Director for BlackBerry in Australia and New Zealand in August 2018. With over two decades in the IT sector, David brings years of expertise in technology transformation, supporting BlackBerry’s trajectory as a leader in software and security. With a strong sales, channel and business leadership background, David heads a team of software and cybersecurity experts that are helping companies and governments to mitigate security risks and transform workplaces by protecting endpoints and communicating securely and privately. Jonathan Jackson has been with BlackBerry for over 6 years and was the Head of Security Advisory for ANZ before assuming his current role. Prior to this, he worked with Nokia and Microsoft where he held a number of roles focusing on enterprise mobility. Jonathan advises customers looking to navigate the daunting world of enterprise mobility and cyber threats, working with them to develop a mobile strategy that satisfies both the demands of IT and end users now and in the future. He has advised a number of large financial and government institutions on how to leverage the expanding capability of security solutions in driving end user productivity while protecting corporate data, assets and staff. This subject commands incredible interest worldwide. Globally, cultures are becoming more convinced that subtle realms of reality not only exist but may affect our lives in ways far more profound than we realize. This perspective is fueled by a growing awareness of ancient and indigenous wisdom and modern science's understanding of our profoundly interconnected quantum reality. Science and ancient wisdom meet in our investigation of these subtler realms of reality. The episode features leading voices from science and ancient and indigenous traditions. Dr. David Nicol, author of Subtle Activism, moderates. Based on his landmark book, Dr. Nicol (California Institute of Integral Studies and a founder of Gaiafield.net and Subtleactivism.net) examines Subtle Activism and its implications with indigenous shamanic voices Oscar Miro-Quesada and Luisah Teish, and renowned western contemplative David Spangler. Among other topics, they consider how intention and prayer may influence reality.

Today we discuss ways we can empower ourselves as water activists in the face of drought and fracking, including by attending Bless the Lake in Oakland on World Water Day (Sunday, March 22 blessthelake.com). Host Laura Garzon Chica (@EarthMediaArts) talks with spiritual guide and Bless the Lake organizer Amelía Aeon Karris (knowtheself.com), David Nicol of the Gaiafield Project (gaiafield.net), and David Braun of Americans Against Fracking and Californians Against Fracking (americansagainstfracking.org and californiansagainstfracking.org). Instead of assessing new state and federal rules to conserve and protect water, we focus on how subtle activism of the spirit, like mass meditation, can shift collective consciousness and strengthen our relationship to this vital and sacred life force. We also welcomed surprise (though invited) guest Luisah Teish, an Oshun chief in the Yoruba Lucumi tradition (yeyeteish.com).
