*Audio Fixed*This week we discuss Superman Smashes the Klan by Gene Luen Yang, with art by Gurihura, the earliest entry in the DC Graphic Novels for Young Adults (formerly DC Ink) lineup. Join us as we follow an old-school incarnation of Superman (from back when he just leapt tall buildings in a single bound, rather than fly so fast around the Earth he could reverse time!) trying to protect a Chinese-American family from the threat of the not-KKK (but actually it is the KKK)!Next week will be a minisode, and then we will be reading Amazing Spider-Man (2014) #1-6: The Parker Luck, #5 on the list of bestselling superhero comics of all time! Our guest for Wednesday, January 13th is an editor for Marvel Comics who is, in a big way, trying to get new generations of readers into comics. After earning her Masters in Publishing from NYU, she went on to work at Simon & Schuster, Macmillan, and DC Comics where she helped launch the inaugural lists of DC’s young readers line of original graphic novels (DC Zoom and DC Ink), before joining Marvel last year. Having edited everything from picture books to comics to YA novels, She has most recently been working hard to bring new original content through Marvel and Scholastic’s collaboration, with epic stories that feature some of Marvel's most iconic characters. I am talking, of course, about the brilliant LAUREN BISOM! We've talked about life, movies, how comics are shaping the future, what she needs to see in a pitch and what definitely doesn't need to be there. Where are we know, and where do we want to be as an industry, the importance of storytelling, of getting the new generations to read comics, and much, much more! #DialogosdeComic #LaurenBisom #Marvel #YoungAdult #Editorial #Comics #YoungReaders #TheFuture #NoMaleButTheHost
What's this? Another new episode this week! Recently we had the chance to chat with graphic novel writer Mariko Tamaki (Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up With Me, This One Summer, Skim) about her latest novel for DC Ink, Harley Quinn: Breaking Glass. We chatted about how one goes about writing a graphic novel, writing popular characters, and, of course, got some book recommendations (which you can find at www.thebookstorepodcast.com).
We're back this week with our 25th podcast! Reaching a quarter of a century old we're finally catching up with DC Universe's Titans after a few weeks away from covering the series. On the movie front we discuss seeing Zombieland: Double Tap as Martin finally braves seeing a horror-tinged movie at the cinema. The it's on to discussing Terminator: Dark Fate, did the latest film in the franchise reignite audience interest in the franchise? As if that wasn't enough Neil tells us all about new DC Ink graphic novel Raven by Kami Garcia and Gabriel Picolo and we discuss our trip to MCM Comic Con London at the weekend. "When we come out of the shadows, does the darkness stay with us?" We launch our new series on Arthur Curry and Mera by diving into the original graphic novel, "Mera: Tidebreaker." Written by Danielle Paige and illustrated by Stephen Byrne, this young adult adventure kicks off a new series of DC Ink titles geared to score teen readers. Brad & Lisa discuss how these characters fare in the footsteps of "Twilight" and "The Hunger Games," and how this angsty insight alters the perception of superheroes Aquaman & Mera. As always, we have a trusty relationship guru to guide us through the plight of our lovers. This month we're using "Love Sense" from author Dr. Sue Johnson and contemplating attachment theory's effect on romance. Are we ever free from the generations that came before? Probably not. Greetings Citizens! Today, I talk about my second favorite graphic novel to come out of DC Ink by NY Times bestselling author, Lauren Myracle. This riveting tale of struggling to find light in the dark brought me closer to Selina Kyle than any story has before and I hope that you get the chance to experience it too! I dive into some of the darker themes of the novel, my opinion on what age-range is appropriate and the differences between "Under The Moon" and "Mera". Strap In! Angela and Kelly continue their exploration of kids comics, starting with DC's new kids/teen imprints: DC Ink and DC Zoom. Is DC's strategy of pairing high profile prose authors with comics IP the correct one, or is it too cautious? And what the heck is Marvel up to? Isaac M. Colon is a tattoo artist at DC Ink on U Street, near Ben's Chili Bowl. Through mutual friends, including my girlfriend, I was able to get in contact with Isaac, sit down and talk about growing up in DC, his love of art, poetry and music, and what inspires his renaissance life. We touch on his love of Joss Whedon and his hatred of the new Bond flick, Skyfall. In the second half of the show, I share my Favorite Things of 2012. That begins at 01:01:45.Music in this episode courtesy of Spazmadik:"Anthem For""Trix are for Kids""Meditation"
