This week's mixtape rewind takes us back to an earlier season where we were joined by Tony Smith, formerly of the band Sleeper Agent.Tony Smith's musical journey begins with Saturday mornings filled with Christopher Cross's "Ride Like the Wind" – his mother's chosen soundtrack for family cleaning day – and ends with the transcendent experience of Bon Iver's "Naeem."Each selection marks a transformative moment: discovering Ben Kweller's "Wasted and Ready" at 3am led to a shift away from nu-metal toward indie rock; encountering The Pixies' "Debaser" completely redirected his career aspirations from filmmaking to music; and Modest Mouse's "Trailer Trash" became a personal anthem while working two jobs during high school, feeling trapped in his Kentucky hometown. What makes this episode special is Smith's vulnerability in sharing how deeply these songs penetrated his life. With three tattoos inspired by tracks on his mix, he demonstrates how music becomes physically part of our identity. His emotional description of waiting years to hear Bon Iver's "Naeem" in studio form – "my body filled with this strange chill and warmth at the same time" – perfectly captures music's power to move us beyond words. You can find his Spotify playlist here: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1RyTOvV7DHYRfW4UdDHTry?si=610402a96acc4fe4 You can find the Super Awesome Mix app list here: https://app.superawesomemix.com/i3BxT4TjZeZyZ4Gb8 Preview of his list:I Want You Back by The Jackson 5Bad, Bad Leroy Brown by Jim CroceWorking Man by RushMMMBop by HansonWasted & Ready by Ben KwellerDebaser by PixiesTrailer Trash by Modest MouseHummingbird by WilcoLust For Life by GirlsFalling In Love Again by Joyce ManorSomething by Julien BakerNaeem by Bon IverFollow us @superawesomemix on Instagram to discover more personal musical journeys and share your own musical milestones that defined different chapters of your life.Support the showVisit us at https://www.superawesomemix.com to learn more about our app, our merchandise, our cards, and more!

A legendary film in the Debaser canon, Martyrs has preoccupied the hosts' since the show's inception. A French movie so extreme, we cannot even recommend most listeners watch the film themselves. In 2007, Kavi Ahuja Moltz and her now husband David launched D.S. & Durga out of their apartment in Brooklyn, New York. Today, the brand's beautiful perfumes, candles, and bodycare products can be found in their three (soon to be four!) brick-and-mortar stores as well as in retailers like Bergdorf Goodman and Neiman Marcus, and direct-to-consumer. While David is the nose of the brand, crafting signature fragrances like Debaser, I Don't Know What, and Rose Altantic, Kavi leads all design aspects as creative director and CEO. But it's no surprise that Kavi has an incredible eye for design. In fact, she spent the early part of her career studying and working in architecture, and though she eventually realized the field wasn't for her, she continues to use the skills she learned in her first career daily at D.S. & Durga.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

David says that when he started out, he knew nothing about perfume, business, or the perfume business. From his Bushwick apartment, he began making fragrances for friends, and at one point, joined forces with his wife, Kavi Moltz, to bring D.S. & Durga to life. They brought together their backgrounds in music and architecture to create scents as immersive experiences, or what they refer to as “armchair travel.” In this episode, David sits down with Brittney Jackson Moseley, who runs integrated marketing at Scentbird. He talks about what it took to break into the industry, how he became a self-taught perfumer, and his exploration with fragrance ingredients, including the most expensive ingredient in the world.Highlights:• D.S. & the Hindu Goddess that inspired the name• The conversation that started D.S. & Durga• Remembering a smell… and then re-creating it• The worst thing David has ever smelled• Perfume and music as “invisible art forms”• The smell of Rockaway Beach• Perfume as armchair travel• How many perfumers are there in the world?• A look into how David creates scents• The most expensive fragrance ingredient in the world• Scent Spotlight: I Don't Know What, Debaser, Pistachio• A simple fragrance formula and an overview of fragrance structure• The fragrance that's 40% oil• A very toxic ingredient and the most common ingredient• Can you smell a rainbow?• David's signature scent with hints of Great Western cowboy music• Finding the beauty in concrete• Advice for starting a perfume brandFeatured Fragrances:I Don't Know What by D.S. & DurgaDebaser by D.S. & DurgaPistachio by D.S. & DurgaSoak in all of our audio and video content at https://podcast.scentbird.com.

Will & Jared tackle a more personal and moralistic film for the second entry in Financial Crisis Month: 99 Homes. Michael Shannon, Andrew Garfield, and Laura Dern star in a drama depicting the personal toll the Financial Crisis took on the working class people that lost their homes. Does Garfield have the range to play a Floridian construction worker? Is Michael Shannon convincingly evil? How accurate is the eviction process as shown in the film? Will Jared's specific knowledge of the Orange County Clerk of Courts come into play? All these questions and more will be answered in this episode of Debaser! Our outro for this episode is the track Progress Isnt Linear by Purrfect.Cover art by @DogBitesBackNYEmail the show at podcast@debaserpod.comFollow Will on Instagram and Jared on Twitter.Follow the show on Instagram and Twitter.
Sound the alarm! It's July and Debaser is entering FINANCIAL CRISIS MONTH! Will and Jared begin by covering what is perhaps the most appropriate film for the theme: Adam McKay's The Big Short. Can the guys adequately explain the cause of the 2007/2008 Financial Crisis? Are the protagonists of this film anti-heroes? Do the fourth-wall breaking celebrity cameos succeed in explaining difficult concepts? All these and more answered in this episode of Debaser!Join us next week as we cover the film 99 Houses.Cover art by @DogBitesBackNYEmail the show at podcast@debaserpod.comFollow Will on Instagram and Jared on Twitter.Follow the show on Instagram and Twitter.
Will & Jared believe in fitness... well, not exactly. I mean they're podcast hosts after all. The duo team up to powerlift Michael Bay's Pain & Gain, a true crime caper set in Miami in the mid nineties. Is The Rock aka Dwayne Johnson surprisingly good in this film? Is Mark Wahlberg a psychopath? Are the writers of this flick known for writing other zany and offensive comedies? Answers await in this episode of Debaser!Cover art by @DogBitesBackNYEmail the show at podcast@debaserpod.comFollow Will on Instagram and Jared on Twitter.Follow the show on Instagram and Twitter.
Will & Jared are beginning to peer into the works of Paul Schrader this week with what is perhaps his biggest writing credit to date: Taxi Driver. Martin Scorsese directs this 1976 neo-noir classic that sadly seems more true today than when it premiered almost fifty years ago.Next week: Paul Schrader's 2017 film First Reformed. Content Warning: Both the film and the discussion herein deal with difficult themes of gun violence, suicide, mental illness, and hate. While some of these may not be unusual topics for Debaser, this film is particularly dark and resonant so we do want to provide this warning.Cover art by @DogBitesBackNYEmail the show at podcast@debaserpod.comFollow Will on Instagram and Jared on Twitter.Follow the show on Instagram and Twitter.
Este episodio de nuestro podcast está dedicado a conversar sobre "Doolittle", una de las obras más importantes de Pixies y pieza esencial en el desarrollo del rock alternativo de los 90 en adelante.

Ben Brown - slight slow 13. Ben Brown - sunrise textile A couple of tracks on this mix, those by Dakn, Maria Chavez and Anteloper are featured on the recent "People of Eternity" which is described this way "the first volume in Amplify Palestine's BDS Mixtape series," info: https://bdsmixtape.bandcamp.com/album/people-of-eternity-bds-mixtape-vol-1 Info on the tracks selected by Lougien: Taqbir is a Moroccan hardcore/punk band, based in Europe. Their music encourage Muslim and North African women to be defiantly themselves. Little is know about them. They perform in burqas, and remain elusive and anonymous online for security reasons. The band's name "Taqbir" means the Islamic call to prayer, and they sing in Arabic. Habibi is an American rock band from Brooklyn, NY. The band's name "Habibi" means "my love" in Arabic, a word that the vocalist Rahill Jamalifard often used growing up in her Iranian household. Their music is a blend of psychedelic rock and 60s girl-group harmonies. They sing in English. Riit is the stage name of Rita Claire Mike-Murphy, a Canadian Inuk musician from Pangnirtung, Nunavut. Riit creates her own space in the electropop world, with deep rhythmic vocals layered over synth cuts, and electronic textures. She sings in Inuktitut. ABUL3EES is a rapper from East Jerusalem. I found him on a late night Soundcloud deep dive. His laid back music style is a contrast to its context. His beats are simple, his flow is dribbling and conversational, but his rhymes are complex and clever. He raps in Arabic. Slash Need is a sexy spacy goth electric grunge band from Toronto. They are one of my favourite discoveries from attending Debaser shows, and I would love to share them with the Radio Al-Hara universe.
Pixies were one of the most, if not THE most influential bands to form in the mid 80s. All of their singles, EPs and LPs are discussed and rated 0 to 5 stars by Joe and Dave, who also share their picks for the top 3 albums and also their least essential title. In the latest episode of Columbia House Party, hosts Jake Goldsbie and Blake Murphy dive into an album that is inextricable from every episode that's come before or will come after, the 1989 classic Doolittle from Pixies. It's just Pixies, by the way. The impact Pixies had on all of alt-rock, pop-punk, and the subgenres between is well established but becomes obvious through a deep re-examining of their most prominent work. Find out more about which modern bands the guys hear Pixies in most, how the relationship between Black Francis and Kim Deal began fracturing, and what the hell Un Chien Andalou is on this week's podcast.
