Arkansas recently joined a growing number of states that support cellphone restrictions in schools, launching a $7 million pilot program to create “phone-free” schools as part of a broader effort to improve student mental health and curb screen addiction. While research on cellphone bans is mixed, some studies show associated improvements in student mental health and academic performance, as well as decreases in bullying. For a firsthand perspective on the impact of such bans on students and the school environment, we're joined on this episode by Dr. Debbie Jones, superintendent of Bentonville Schools.

My guest on today's episode is Debbie Jones.  Debbie is the lead trainer and owner of Confident Director, a company that provides coaching, consulting, training, networking, and online courses.  She enjoys guiding directors and teachers to reach their unique potential in their professional roles.  She has over 20 years of experience in early childhood education working with faith-based and secular programs. Debbie received her Bachelor of Arts from Howard Payne University and she holds a Texas director certificate.  In this episode, Debbie discusses the concept of risky play and its importance in childhood development. Risky play refers to allowing children to engage in activities that involve some level of risk, such as climbing, exploring, and problem-solving. She emphasizes the need to trust children and their abilities, allowing them to make decisions and learn from their experiences. She also highlights the benefits of risky play, including increased self-confidence, problem-solving skills, and awareness of their surroundings. Debbie suggests that educators should create a "yes environment" that promotes risky play and encourages children to take appropriate risks. She also advises teachers to observe and notice children's interests and abilities, and to provide opportunities for them to engage in risky play in a safe and supervised manner. Overall, Debbie emphasizes the importance of trusting children and allowing them to take risks to foster their development and build their confidence and problem-solving skills. Are there a couple of traditional rules in your classroom that you're willing to step away from for a few days?  I want to encourage you to remember that young children rarely take risks beyond what they are capable of if we trust them!  The next time a child takes a risk that makes you gasp….stop yourself to adjust for a split second before yelling STOPPPP or “BE CAREFUL” and take a breath.  Be ready to support them but don't stop them. See what happens. My guess is that you'll be celebrating their success at doing something that required bravery and courage!   You can access Debbie's website HERE. As always, we would love to connect with you on Instagram HERE and on Facebook HERE.

Around half the world's population is projected to be myopic (or nearsighted) by 2050! Today's guest says that, far from being insurmountable, preventing or delaying the onset of myopia is possible.Dr. Debbie Jones recommends that group benefits administrators and wellness coordinators help their employees consider outdoor time and screen time plans for their children. She also describes a range of therapies that are available to slow myopia progression, including specialized contact lenses and eyeglasses, as well as eye drops.A new podcast designed for non-medical listeners explains the reasons behind the global childhood myopia epidemic and what that means for Canadian families. Featuring Dr. Debbie Jones, a clinical scientist from the Centre for Ocular Research & Education (CORE) and internationally known myopia expert, the 22-minute discussion is part of the Don't Lose Sight interview series from the Canadian Association of Optometrists. The work Debbie and her team do is close to my family's heart and when I received a press release about the new pod, I had to get Debbie on the show. Questions For Debbie Include:What is pediatric myopia… and why should the HR community care? What's the impact of childhood myopia to employers? Is this kind of health care covered by most benefits plans? While half the world's population is projected to be myopic by 2050, the crisis is already evident in Canada. Dr. Jones notes that recent work showed a 30% prevalence among 11- to 13-year-olds in the Waterloo-Kitchener region. Remarkably, one-third of those children's caregivers were unaware of the problem until the research project uncovered the condition. How can employers better educate employees? What do HR teams perhaps not understand about childhood myopia? What can organizations do to encourage that employees' children received eye exams? What's ahead for the field of myopia control? You would encourage parents to have their children's eyes examined regularly by an optometrist, so that problems can be identified as early as possible. We do our best to ensure editorial objectivity. Prince Andrew has hit the news headlines after his recent interview on the BBC....where he virtually denies all wrongdoing in the Epstein scandal....an appearance I felt was somewhat misguided.......... The TV Children In Need annual fundraising event has raised over 47 million pounds which will go towards a good cause....however with certain political parties promising to donate BILLIONS to better the country not forgetting intended high speed rail routes going BILLIONS over budget....... On the entertainment front we have the return of "I'm a celebrity get me out of here" which is very popular for some reason....I see they have stopped the killing of small creatures in the "trials" which is........ I was chatting to some friends about strange coincidences which most of us have had....the most unbelievable one I had was when I was working on Radio Merseyside with my pal And on the subject of Radio Merseyside the song this week is a jingle I wrote for Debbie Jones who had a daily competition where listeners had to guess what a certain sound ........

It strikes me that we have become a nation of moaners....especially the older generation....you go on Facebook and there they are with the grumbles and outrage about politicians and the way the country is run.....yet no-one does anything about it.....the easiest thing in the world is to criticise .....if you can do better get off you backside and get on with it.....and we seem to be stuck in the past....we keep harping back to the good old days with endless programmes on The Beatles etc....with old guys forming bands and going out with their shades and cowboy hats....and playing for nothing.....very strange....coupled with this we have the P.C. brigade...the feminists...and the easily offended telling us what we can and can't say or do.....there's only a handful of them so why not just sweep them aside and ignore them?....I certainly do. 2,I watched The Greatest Showman over Xmas....a great film which I thoroughly enjoyed....great songs....also unfortunately Mary Poppins was on.....now I have always been told I look like Dick Van Dyke (can't see it myself) so my son tells my grandson while they are watching it "There's Granddad"....after which I was bombarded with questions from him about Mary Poppins....which I have never seen.......to make matters worse the next day Chitty Bang Bang was on.....which I have never seen...so I faced a lot more difficult questions about that one....my son found it all hilarious.....the nipper will go back to school and tell all the kids his Granddad is a film star..........why did I have to be Dick Van Dyke?....why couldn't I have been The Fonz? 3.I also watched Michael Macintyre who I quite like but his show is becoming very samey....and he had a comic on who sounded like he'd had a comedy by-pass....do people not know what "funny" is these days?.....the P.C. brigade have seen off the ones who could actually make us laugh.....and I noticed Lee Evans was on one of the channels so I had a look to see if he had improved in any way.....'fraid not.....he was dreadful...and after 5 minutes I couldn't take any more.....yet he was playing to a full stadium which says it all......it's a shame that the younger generation don't know what comedy is as they have never seen any. 4.I watched The Voice the other night and they featured Lonnie Donegan's son (I notice you put this up on Facebook)...he was good but are we expected to believe that Tom Jones didn't know him?.....and the job they made of the song Lonnie wrote for Tom....rehearsed or what......"it was meant to be"...yeah sure..........Lonnie would now be 87 so he must have had the lad late......we owe a lot to Lonnie who started us all off with skiffle in the late 50s....it gave us the ability to play simple stuff.....eg Tom Dooley only had two chords...........but the problem with talent shows is they are too contrived for my liking.....we have grannie and the family in the wings ...why?....and they go on and get "judged"......they should put acts on who are good enough and give them TV exposure and let them take it from there...."judging" shouldn't come into it....then they would learn the game. 5.The song this week is called "Worrizit?" and is a jingle I wrote back in the day for Debbie Jones on Radio Merseyside......it was a daily competition on her radio programme where the listener would hear a noise and ring in and try and guess what the noise was....it was quite popular at the time.....I have just found this in a drawer in my studio....I haven't heard it for years....sadly it never made the top 20...can't imagine why.....
