For nearly a decade, Donald Trump and his political allies have made it clear that one of their primary goals is mass deportation of undocumented people living in the U.S. After the election, this rhetoric is set to become a policy reality, affecting millions of people across all sectors of society. While Trump and right-wing conservatives have proudly embraced an anti-immigration stance, it's important to recognize that Republicans aren't the only party that set the stage for mass deportations. Over the years, Democrats have also shifted rightward on immigration, increasingly echoing the foundational principles of conservative immigration policies. After all, there's a reason President Obama earned the nickname "Deporter-in-Chief": 3 million people were deported during his presidency. As questions arise about what mass deportations will look like under a Trump administration, many wonder how it will differ from the current system. In our latest episode, host Kai Wright speaks with Jasmine Garsd, NPR's immigration correspondent and the host of The Last Cup, as well as Ronnie James, director of national community engagement for the UndocuBlack Network, an organization that supports Black migrants who are either currently or formerly undocumented. They explore how both parties have mishandled immigration over the years, the myths and misconceptions that shape immigration policy, the economic impacts of mass deportations, and what these policies could actually look like in practice. James also shares how people can get involved in efforts to push back against these policies. Tell us what you think. We're @noteswithkai on Instagram and X (Twitter). Email us at notes@wnyc.org. Episode 22 – Diets and Pheromones with Dr Hannah Rowles from SV Animal Health Dubai This is an episode you won't want to miss if you are looking for products to support your pet's behavioural health without the prescription of psychotropic medication. In this episode, Dr Katrin chats to the wonderful Dr Hannah Rowles, veterinarian, and Head of Scientific Communications at SV Animal Health, one of the largest veterinary health supply companies in the Middle East. Their conversation begins by taking a look at the Royal Canin Calm Diet, a veterinary prescription diet for cats and small dogs that contains a number of ingredients that promote behavioural health and wellbeing. Dr Katrin explains how she uses the diet in her behaviour patients, and both stress the practicalities and economic gains when using a diet (you feed your pet anyway!) as a therapeutic agent. They then move on to chatting about another wonderful group of products, the pheromone products, specifically Feliway® and Adaptil®, which are both made by Ceva, and how they can successfully be implemented into a treatment plan for complex behaviour cases, but also how they are so beneficial in many everyday life situations. Here are some takeaways from the episode: 1. When using diets and supplements, always make sure you are choosing products based on scientific evidence. 2. Diets are a great way to positively influence your pet's health without breaking the bank! You feed your pet anyway, so why not choose a diet that will enhance their health and wellbeing! 3. Diets and pheromones are GREAT options for multi-pet households (think herd health!). 4. EVERY puppy should have the benefit of an Adaptil® puppy collar to help them adjust to their new life, family, and environment! Grant DePorter has worked at Harry Caray's since 1989 (less than two years after the restaurant group was formed) so he worked closely with Harry himself for quite a while. Not surprisingly, he has some wild stories about Harry back in the day (including an estimated 14,000 bar visits and 300,000 alcoholic beverages consumed in his life). Grant also talks about the hard work he puts in to keep Harry's legacy alive, even if that means embracing some of the great and not-so-great Harry Caray impressions that are out there including Will Ferrell's and Ryan Dempster's. Grant grew up in a hotel, which not everyone can say. He's also a massive sports memorabilia geek, as evidenced by several of the stories he told during this interview. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/theheckler/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/theheckler/support

Join TendingBar for Part 1 of an eye-opening and energizing conversation with Peter Vincent, General Counsel to ICE during the Obama administration, one of America's chief experts on criminal enterprise and terrorist organizations operating in Mexico and Central America! In Part 1 of Peter Vincent's interview with TendingBar, he recounts his role in apprehending one of history's most notorious narco-traffickers, El Chapo Guzman. He also shares his thoughts on public policy related to immigration across American's Southern Border, and he opines on current events. Our interview of Peter Vincent occurred just days before the U.S. Supreme Court rejected the Trump administration's efforts to dismantle DACA. Peter predicted that the Supreme Court would let DACA stand. Part 1: Key Topics 6:12: Helping Colombia from falling into a narco-state-type dynamic 8:19: Tracking down ultra narco-trafficker, El Chapo 14:10: “Tacos, tequila and chicas” 18:29: Made in Hollywood, tracking El Chapo through Sean Penn and Kate del Castillo 21:55: A narco-trafficking game of “Whack-a-Mole” 28:26: Thoughts on today’s political environment 31:47: Why the Law, Peter? / Thoughts on lawyers as public servants... In Part 2 of Peter's interview, we discuss controversial immigration policy issues like Jeff Sessions' "zero tolerance" policy and the separation of immigrant children from their families within U.S. detention facilities at the Southern border. Peter speaks candidly about challenges to immigration policy, and about the thought that went into creation of the "Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals" program (DACA) - a program for which Peter was among the principal architects. More about Peter Vincent Peter Vincent has been serving the American people in various law enforcement and diplomatic roles for decades. You may know him as the man in charge of the U.S. task force that worked with Mexican authorities to capture infamous narco-trafficker "El Chapo." But Peter's career has been far-ranging, and his insights are important. As a judicial attache for the U.S. Dept. of Justice in Bogota, Colombia, Peter became a top expert on criminal enterprise and terrorist organizations operating in Mexico and Central America. Even before becoming a lawyer, he had developed an appreciation and love for the people and culture of Central America, while serving as a Peace Corps volunteer in war-torn Guatemala. Peter brought his cultural understanding and law enforcement expertise to the Dept. of Homeland Security, where he became the top lawyer in Immigrations and Customs Enforcement, overseeing more than 1000 attorneys charged with enforcing immigration policy during the Obama administration. During his tenure at ICE, the U.S. witnessed large groups of migrants fleeing terrible violence in Central America's "Northern Triangle" region (Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala). Faced with large inflows of undocumented immigrants and overwhelming backlogs in the immigration courts, under Peter's leadership ICE implemented processes that prioritized cases related to safety threats (e.g., alleged drug traffickers) over cases that posed no safety threats, like families seeking asylum. Amazingly, such prioritization had not previously been the practice within ICE, and Peter's team reduced backlog from more than 1,000,000 cases to ~350,000. Peter and a small administration team relied upon the same philosophy of prioritization to create DACA, which offered protected status to young immigrants who had grown up in the U.S., while permitting ICE to focus on more critical cases and to increase enforcement, leading to Obama's nickname as "Deporter in Chief." Be sure to look for Part 2 of Peter's interview, coming soon.

ICE Is "Ready" To Deport One Million Illegal Immigrants, Potential ICE Raids Incoming. Immigration and Customs enforcement is reportedly ready to apprehend and deport the approximately one million illegal immigrants with final removal orders according to USCIS Director Ken Cuccinelli.Just last month Donald Trump announced that ICE raids would be called off in order to give Democrats and Republicans a chance to come up with a deal. However, some speculate that the real reason was that critical details of the raids were leaked and compromised security. The issue of illegal immigration used to be bipartisan with both the left and the right in agreements on border security. But since Trump's election Democrats have flipped tot he far left and begun pushing a social justice narrative that flies in the face of the actions of Obama. Obama was called "Deporter in Chief" by many as he had a very hard stance on illegal border crossings. How did we end up at a point where Democrats play to the far left and pander on TV to to woke democrats instead of securing US borders and interests?Support the show (http://timcast.com/donate)
Separating immigrant families at the border may be something new, but the US has never extended the “Good Neighbor Policy” to Central America. Clinton and Bush discouraged newcomers, and Obama was called, “Deporter in Chief.” We'll provide context ignored in mainstream media coverage.
Barack Obama was one of the most polarizing presidents of the modern era. To the right, he was a weak, feckless leader and to the left, he was the Deporter in Chief and Drone President who bombed villages in Pakistan and assassinated Americans without trial in Yemen. While Obama did embrace the U.S. empire — killing civilians and selling weapons to some awful regimes — he also pulled some of the biggest diplomatic breakthroughs of our time, negotiating the Iran nuclear deal, getting the U.S. to sign up to the Paris Climate Accords, and re-opening ties with Cuba. With Trump now in office, is it time to recognize that Obama wasn’t as bad as we thought, or did Obama’s excesses, whether in the Middle East or at the Mexico border, lead the way to Trump’s? Ben Rhodes, Obama’s national security adviser, joins Mehdi Hasan on this week’s episode to discuss the Obama legacy and whether it seeped into the Trump administration.
On this episode of the Food About Town podcast, Derrick DePorter from Unter Biergarten came over to the studio to talk about opening his own restaurant and his path working through the Rochester dining scene. Two episodes will be out next week. A random topic episode featuring some talk on...

As an expert on immigration, Dr. Ellin Jimmerson's conversation was a fun, meaningful, and timely. Jimmerson's movie, The Second Cooler, narrated by Martin Sheen, was released in 2013. It has won many awards and been screened at many universities, fund raisers, theaters, and other venues across the US. While we were conducting our interview rallies, marches and protests were happening all across the United States and the world in response to Donald Trump's two-day old executive order banning Muslims and refugees. The Second Cooler is a documentary about illegal migration shot primarily in Alabama, Arizona, and Mexico. The premise is that Arizona is the new Alabama—the epicenter of an intense struggle for migrant justice. The documentary brings basic migration issues into focus. Those issues include the impact of free trade agreements on migration, the lack of a legal way for poor Latin Americans to come to the United States, the inherent abuses of the guest worker program, the fact that many migrants are indigenous people, anti-immigrant politics in Alabama, the thousands of migrant deaths at the border, and an escalating ideology of the border. Ellin Jimmerson has a Masters in Southern History from Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, a Ph. D. in 20th Century United States History from the University of Houston, Texas, and a Masters in Theological Studies from Vanderbilt Divinity School with a concentration in Latin American liberation theology. She is an ordained Baptist minister. Ellin points out in the interview that the current executive order did not come out of nowhere just because of Donald Trump. President Obama had earned the moniker Deporter-in-Chief for deporting three million people and the problems certainly predated President Obama. Ellin is the author of numerous articles, essays, and speeches. She writes for publication on various areas of history and religion. She has been interviewed on public, religious, and other radio stations and in podcasts around the US on the subject of immigration. Ellin cautions us of the phrase comprehensive immigration reform "because it means anything anyone wants it to mean." She assures us it will keep coming up. She has great recommendations about some of the most important and urgent things we can do. My first suggestion is this, watch the Second Cooler. You can download it right now (or order it). Jimmerson’s academic speciality is the intersection of US history, Latin American history, and Christianity. She has spoken to academic and non-academic audiences on liberation theology in the United States and Mexico. An ordained Baptist minister, she was Minister to the Community at Weatherly Heights Baptist Church in Huntsville, Alabama, USA from 2008-2015. Because her parents were Civil Rights Movement activists during the 1950s and 1960s in Albany, Georgia and Birmingham, Alabama, she cut her teeth on social justice issues. Former U.S. deportation agent Holbrook describes his job (a combination of policeman, lawyer and diplomat) in this unsettling memoir. Among its revelations is that America routinely releases illegal aliens who have committed crimes in the U.S. when the criminal fails to confirm his nationality with an official document and foreign consuls won't cooperate. (Cuba, Vietnam and Laos refuse to accept criminal deportees, while China, India, Egypt, all former U.S.S.R. nations and many others simply stall or insist there's no evidence for that person's citizenship.) Holbrook also reveals tricks he invented to deport the worst offenders that would have gotten him fired if discovered. For example, countries show less reluctance with lesser criminals, so in the case of a convicted murderer who also trespassed, he might only mention the trespass. Holbrook stresses that Bush administration officials could force nations to take back their murderers, rapists, thieves or child abusers, but choose not to nor does the government prevent them from being released back into American communities after they have served their prison time or a portion of it, but deportation has been thwarted. This engrossing but disturbing book may impel some readers to action. (Oct. 4) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

When Trump attacked her for being soft on the border, she didn't argue that America is a nation of immigrants, built by immigrants. In fact, she didn't talk about immigrants at all. “She talked about drug smugglers, human traffickers, and people who illegally crossed the border. But she didn't really give any idea of America as a nation of immigrants, which is the most boilerplate standard go-to on the left.”But in the past three years, what the US considers ‘left' has shifted drastically. “It's also important to remember where we started,” Washington says. “At the beginning of the Biden-Harris administration, they were asking for a hundred-day moratorium on deportations. Now they've gone way past the center and are at the right.”The Biden administration in a single term has already deported or expelled over three million people. “He's taken the mantle of Deporter in Chief,” a title that was previously held by Barack Obama. And as we heard in the debate, Kamala Harris is following in his footsteps. “The policies that she is fighting for are vehemently anti-immigrant. They would raise the asylum threshold, build more wall. They would put more surveillance technology on the U.S.-Mexico border. They would detain people for longer.”Tell us, Democrats, which of those things counts as a lesser evil than Donald Trump?Subscribe for the full interview with John Washington, where he describes the violent reality at the border, how the media is spinning it to protect Biden and Harris, and how borders affect what is happening today in Gaza.00:00 Intro00:28 Dems love Dick Cheney now15:10 John Washington interview16:05 Are they eating the pets?19:29 Is Kamala Harris different than Trump?23:01 The case for open borders32:52 Do open borders make countries poorer?39:49 Why should I have to pay for immigrants coming here?43:49 The contribution to societyOur Sponsors:* Check out Roundhouse Provisions: roundhouseprovisions.com/USEFULAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
