A long-time nonprofit leader, consultant, and recovering academic, Pat has made it her mission to teach nonprofit leaders and everyday people how to create change through the legislative process.  She is the author of The Empowered Citizens Guide and The Lobbying Strategy Handbook — funny, relatable books written for anyone who sees a glaring injustice or community-wide problem and wants to scream, “There ought to be law!” but doesn't know how to make it happen. Pat makes conducting a successful grassroots lobbying campaign seem relatively painless by sharing her easy-to-follow formula and pulling the curtain back on things we think we should know but don't. The books are illustrated by real-life examples of people who used her 10-step strategy to pass laws, and contain detailed information on the rules governing nonprofit lobbying. Pat created her strategy while leading a nonprofit organization; since then, it has been used by novice citizen activists throughout the country to pass new laws, including many in California where she resides. In this episode, Joe interviews two members of the Heroic Hearts Project team: Director of Donor Development and founder of The Hope Project, Allison Wilson; and Director of Research and founder of Hystelica, Dr. Grace Blest-Hopley. They discuss how The Hope Project – a nonprofit that supports spouses of veterans, Gold Star Wives, and female veterans with scholarships to psychedelic healing retreats, integration, community, etc. – merged with Heroic Hearts Project, and why this is such a necessary part of the veteran healing story: How does a family hold space for a vet returning to a suddenly alien civilian life (especially after a psychedelic journey)? How does a spouse deal with their own trauma from constant worry and isolation? Wilson and Blest-Hopley are learning that, for many spouses, having their own experience (and with other spouses) has been incredibly beneficial. They talk about: The concept of secondary PTSD (often referred to as ‘compassion fatigue') and the many ways it can manifest How Heroic Hearts is working with Imperial College London to use veteran retreats as real-world observational research The importance of involving family in the healing process, and how positive outcomes can trickle down to children The need for more research into how PTSD and the effects of psychedelics are different in women based on their unique physiology (as most studies have focused on men) and more! Most nonprofits are under-funded.  Even if you think your nonprofit is doing well, we've found you could be doing much better.   However, most nonprofits don't have a clear development strategy that keeps them grounded.  As a result, they "get creative" and "try new things" based on what is popular or trending, or they get comfortable with where they are at and don't realize the dangers they will be facing in just a few short years. The donor development continuum is dead.Discovery -> Cultivation -> Solicitation -> StewardshipThis framework was based on the premise that you have control over the relationship. That's no longer the case.Instead, here's what's happening now:❗ Donors are DISCOVERING you and forming their own opinions through social media and other digital or in-person gathering places.❗ They can see right through your “CULTIVATION” efforts. They come off as insincere and actually undermine trust.❗ SOLICITATION, when disconnected from feeling involved in co-creating the project, yields smaller and token gifts if at all.❗ STEWARDSHIP, if it is being done, again feels insincere. Have you ever had an “in awe of God” moment?  A moment where God showed up big and exceeded your expectations.  I like to call these Ephesians 3:20 moments. Today, I cannot wait for you to hear my conversation with Danya Jordan.  We talk about how we first met which happens to be one of my “in awe of God” moments.  We also talk about giving today.  I have found that many times, our Ephesians 3:20 moments happen after we faithfully say yes to God and give our time, money, or resources. Giving is so important. Friends, I love Danya’s heart for giving! She has been helping others reach their God sized vision for 26 years.  I am excited for you to hear about Blessings Brokers as well as her passion for God’s Word!  I know you are going to be blessed by what she shares especially when she talks about the book she is co-authoring, Lavish. The average family earning $25,000 a year in the U.S. spends about $2,400 on financial transactions. Whether it’s the astronomical interest rates of a payday loan or the costs that come with being unbanked, the extractive practices of the financial services industry are effectively keeping the poor in poverty. Lawyer and author Mehrsa Baradaran and economic mobility expert Cate Blackford join Nick and Steph this week to explain why banking while poor is so expensive, and what states can do to rein in the people who profit from it.  Mehrsa Baradaran is a professor of law at UC Irvine.
