In this thought-provoking discussion, poet and oral historian Sarah Hesketh discusses her latest book, 2016 (CB Editions), a powerful exploration of one of the most pivotal years in recent history. Through a poetic and documentary approach, she captures the voices of twelve individuals reflecting on key events that shaped the world—Brexit, Trump's election, the Syrian refugee crisis, celebrity deaths, and the climate emergency.Hesketh discusses her unique oral history-meets-poetry methodology, weaving real voices into a literary tapestry that highlights how people experience history personally. She explains the ethical dilemmas of working with real testimonies, her structured yet fluid approach to editing interviews, and how historical narratives evolve over time. The conversation touches on:How the death of Hesketh's father led her to explore grief, memory, and storytelling. The 2016 political landscape and the increasing polarization of public discourse. The challenges of finding diverse interviewees, including Trump and Brexit supporters. The power of literature and poetry to engage with contemporary crises. How the pandemic and Trump's return to power in 2025 reshaped the book's relevance.A compelling discussion on history, human connection, and the enduring power of conversation in fractured times.*Sarah Hesketh is a writer and editor from Pendle, in East Lancashire. Artist and curator Lubaina Himid unravels entangled histories of transatlantic slavery and textile production, across continents, and Britain's museum collections, via Lost Threads (2021, 2023). Lubaina Himid considers herself ‘fundamentally a painter', but textiles have long been part of her life and practice. Had she stayed in Zanzibar, the country of her birth in East Africa, she may have become a kanga designer, following a pattern set by her mother's interest in fashion, and childhood spent around department stores in London. First commissioned by the British Textile Biennial in 2021, and installed in Gawthorpe Hall's Great Barn, her 400m-long work Lost Threads' flows in a manner reflective of the movement of the oceans, seas, and waterways which historically carried raw cotton, spun yarn, and woven textiles between continents, as well as enslaved people from Africa to pick raw cotton in the southern states of America, and workers who migrated from South Asia to operate looms in East Lancashire. Now on display in Bath, the rich Dutch wax fabrics resonate with the portraits on display in the Holburne Museum's collection of 17th and 18th century paintings - symbols of how much of the wealth and prosperity of south-west England has been derived from plantations in the West Indies. Lubaina talks about how the meaning of her work changes as it travels to different contexts, with works interpreted with respect to Indian Ocean histories in the port city of Sharjah, to accessible, participatory works in Cardiff, and across Wales. We consider her ‘creative interventions' in object museums and historic collections, ‘obliterating the beauty' of domestic items like ceramics, and her work with risk-taking curators in ‘regional' and ‘non-conventional' exhibition spaces. We discuss her formative work within the Blk Art group in the 1980s, collaboration with other women, and being the first Black artist to win the Turner Prize in 2017. And drawing on her interests in theatre, Lubaina hints at other collections and seemingly ‘resolved' histories that she'd like to unsettle next. Lubaina Himid: Lost Threads runs at the Holburne Museum in Bath until 21 April 2024. For more about Dutch wax fabric and ‘African' textiles, hear the British Museum's Dr. Chris Spring on Thabo, Thabiso and Blackx, Araminta de Clermont (2010). For more about Claudette Johnson, hear curator Dorothy Price on And I Have My Own Business in This Skin (1982) at the Courtauld Gallery in London. Hear artist Ingrid Pollard on Carbon Slowly Turning (2022) at the Turner Contemporary in Margate. Hear curator Griselda Pollock from Medium and Memory (2023) at HackelBury Fine Art in London. And for more about the wealth of colonial, Caribbean sugar plantations which founded the Holburne Museum, hear Dr. Lou Roper on Philip Lea and John Seller's A New Map of the Island of Barbados (1686), an object in its collection. The last official sighting of 26 year old Maria Christina Requena was on New Year's Day 1991. A week later her dismembered body was found at a beauty spot 24 km away. The location was only a couple of km away from where the mutilated  body of 31 year old Linda Donaldson had been found in October 1988. Both women were sex workers and worked opposite ends of the East Lancs road that connects the cities of Manchester and Liverpool in the north west of England. The murders of Veronica Anderson in August 1991 and Julie Finley in 1994 have also been linked to a series of murders some journalists and cold case experts have apportioned to a killer referred to as the East Lancs Ripper. We talk to RCGP Chair, Martin Marshall, about continuity of care, which he states is one of the defining features of general practice. Evidence has shown that continuity of care is associated with better health outcomes for patients, but how can doctors convince politicians and policymakers of the benefits of it? We also speak to Emma Gladwinfield, a GP in Rossendale, about how connecting with schools, churches and community centres is helping to build relationships with patients and deliver care in her local community. Our guests: Martin Marshall is the Chair of the RCGP, a GP in Newham, East London, and Professor of Healthcare Improvement at UCL. Emma Gladwinfield is a GP in Rossendale, East Lancashire. With much of the country blanketed under deep snow and underlying frost that had brought hundreds of mills and factories to a close with over 15,000 workers within East Lancashire alone all being left unable to work, for children – it brought an unexpected break from their daily chores of not just work but that also of school. Many took to the parks and playing fields to enjoy the extended break, throwing snowballs, making snowmen and if they had the means, they would find somewhere steep enough to enjoy the rare opportunity to sledge down. And it's within the township of Haslingden that we are once again travelling back to, and to the evening of Wednesday, 3rd March 1909 as we delve into the story of the Charles Lane toboggan misadventure. Fifty year old, James Roberts, a waste breaker who was employed at Spring Vale mill, had left work at around 7.40pm to make his way home at nearby 27 Prospect Hill. With him was a man named Havelock Bond, an engineer who also worked at the same mill as James. Taking a pipe out from his jacket, lighting it and after a couple of puffs of smoke, Havelock patted James on his back, telling him it wouldn't be long before they both reached their homes, despite the lane ahead being in a hazardous condition. “Aye, perhaps your ‘reet.” replied James as he lit his own pipe.

Catch Me When I Fall

In todays episode Ben Fairless hops into the hot seat to  focus on the important subject of Men's Mental Health. Men's mental health is important because it's well known that many men keep their stress to themselves. They don't want to seem like a burden. They'd rather carry on acting like everything's okay for the sake of their families or just so they don't have to deal with the inevitable conversations that would come from talking about their emotions in the first place. We are here to try and change this perception along with a couple of guests. Andy Toynton who is a BRIC coordinator( Building Recovery in communities) joins us to discuss his role and the beneficial impact it has had during Lockdown, and we have James Roberts who gives up his time to Volunteer for Inspire, a drug and alcohol service in East Lancashire. James discusses some of the challenges he has had through life in particular anxiety and depression. If you are suffering from any of the topics we have discussed in todays show, here is a handy link for a broad range of services that can help Hub of Hope - Mental Health Support Network provided by Chasing the Stigma

People living in Greater Manchester, East Lancashire and West Yorkshire are no longer allowed to meet up with those from other households in their home or garden, or in pubs, restaurants or shops. The health secretary Matt Hancock told Sarah Smith, “My heart goes out to the Muslim communities in these areas because I know how important the Eid celebrations are.” He went on to thank community leaders for their efforts to find safe ways to hold celebrations: “"For instance celebrating Eid in parks where there's more space available and of course outdoors is safer than indoors." The Hollies became one of the leading British groups of the 1960s (231 weeks on the UK singles charts during the 1960s, the 9th highest of any artist of the decade) and into the mid 1970s. The band was formed by Allan Clarke and Graham Nash in 1962 as a Merseybeat-type music group in Manchester, although some of the band members came from towns further north in East Lancashire. Graham Nash left the group in 1968 to form the supergroup Crosby, Stills & Nash. They enjoyed considerable popularity in many countries (at least 60 singles or EPs and 26 albums charting somewhere in the world, spanning over five decades), although they did not achieve major US chart success until 1966 with "Bus Stop". The Hollies had over 30 charting singles on the UK Singles Chart, and 22 on the Billboard Hot 100, with major hits on both sides of the Atlantic that included "Just One Look", "Look Through Any Window", "I Can't Let Go", "Bus Stop", "Stop Stop Stop", "On a Carousel", "Carrie Anne", "Jennifer Eccles", and later "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother", "Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress", and "The Air That I Breathe".The Hollies are one of the few UK groups of the early 1960s, along with the Rolling Stones, that have never disbanded and continue to record and perform. In recognition of their achievements, the Hollies were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010.Harold Allan Clarke is an English pop rock singer, who was one of the founding members and the original lead singer of The Hollies and as inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010 . He retired from performing in 1999, due in part to ongoing medical problems with his vocal cords, while at the same time his wife since 1964, Jennifer Bowstead Clarke experienced a recurrence of Cancer. In the autumn of 2019 Allan returned with a new album on BMG, appropriately titled ‘Resurgence'.https://www.allan-clarke.co.uk
