The NFL Pro Bowl rosters were announced and the Denver Broncos not only have three Pro Bowlers, they have three starters. Pat Surtain II, Justin Simmons and Marvin Mims Jr. were each named Pro Bowl starters for their fantastics seasons. But many Broncos were snubbed, including Courtland Sutton, Quinn Meinerz and Michael Burton. Who was Denver's BIGGEST Pro Bowl snub? Additionally, despite being eliminated from the NFL playoffs, Sean Payton has made it very clear that he is going to do everything he can for the Denver Broncos to beat the Las Vegas Raiders in the team's season finale in Week 18. A win would give the Broncos their first winning season since 2016. How important is that? Can that carry momentum for the team going into next season? It would also give Denver their first win against the Raiders since they moved to Las Vegas. A loss for the Broncos, however, would solidify another losing season. It would also extend Denver's losing streak to the Raiders to eight games. But, it would give the Broncos a better draft pick. Currently, the Broncos have the 14th pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. If they win, it will become a worse pick. If they lose, it will become a better pick. Just how far can the Broncos move up or down in the draft? How important would those draft spots be if Denver wants to land a top quarterback — such as Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, Michael Penix Jr., Drake Maye, Bo Nix or J.J. McCarthy — in the draft? I feel bad for @brooklynnets fans like @mostcallmeo who has been supporting the team since the #continentalarena days & for #kevindurant not to finish the season is disappointing. What they could have accomplished we will never know. I will see the new #nets at #msg vs the @nyknicks on Monday night. Lot of trades today. @suns jumped @nuggets to win title. Still have to play the games. #jalenbrunson got back his @novambb teammate #joshhart and was very excited. #quinnewers got a haircut @partylikearochkind he looks damn good. #cmc still pissed about @49ers losing to @philadelphiaeagles and hopes both teams lose in #sblvii Sunday. Someone put a @chiefs shirt on #rocky statue. Looked too perfect. Could have been a Philly fan. Trying to keep the curse going on Eagles opponents. #amandakamekona first female on field coach for @cleguardians congrats. #bethanyhamilton @wsl has new policy on #transgender athletes. She can choose not to compete. I am psyched to watch what #erinmatson will do with @uncfieldhockey in 2023. She's won on the field as an athlete and will continue that trend as a coach.

As the 2022 citrus harvest gets underway, All In For Citrus podcast host Frank Giles catches up with the directors of three University of Florida Institute of Food Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) research and education centers. The directors discuss how the citrus crop is looking in their areas as well as key research projects underway at their facilities. Michael Rogers, director of the UF/IFAS Citrus Research and Education Center, noted that he's seeing a mixed bag when it comes to this year's crop. While some groves clearly are suffering the effects of HLB, others look quite good. “I have seen some groves that look quite remarkable, kind of reminiscent of where we were 15 or 20 years ago,” said Rogers. “These growers have been working on their nutrition programs in particular and have their soil pH right and are alleviating the stress on the trees. Over a period of years, they have really seen those groves come back. I was in a grove a couple weeks ago that looked very similar to what we would have seen before HLB. The big question remains, will those fruit hang on the tree? … That has been a big focus for us in research, trying to find ways to keep fruit on the trees through harvest.” Rogers also addresses a shortage of imidacloprid, which is an important insecticide for citrus, especially young trees. Work is underway to make the product more available to growers. Ron Cave, director of the Indian River Research and Education Center, discusses citrus research projects at that facility and its Millennium Block. He says there is a field day scheduled there on Oct. 19 that growers will want to attend. The new director of the Southwest Florida Research and Education Center, Michael Burton, talks about his priorities for citrus research and provides some details on his background before coming to Florida. Check out the September All In For Citrus podcast for more crop updates and a look at UF/IFAS citrus research. The podcast is a joint project of UF/IFAS and AgNet Media.

Slavery was legal in Maryland until November 1, 1864, when a new state constitution prohibited the practice of slavery. Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation the year before had declared slaves in the Confederate states to be free, but Maryland was in the union and not included in the proclamation. From the late 18th Century until the Civil War, enslaved families in Prince George's County, Maryland, brought over a thousand legal suits against hundreds of slaveholding families, arguing for their freedom. In these freedom suits, enslaved individuals sued for their freedom based on issues of breach of contract or unjust detainment. When an enslaved person won a freedom suit the individual would be granted their freedom, and it could sometimes provide the basis for future lawsuits by family members, but the institution of slavery persisted. In 1791, Edward Queen, an enslaved man at the White Marsh Plantation in Prince George's County, sued Rev. John Ashton, a Jesuit slaveholder, for his freedom in the Maryland General Court. In Edward Queen's petition he said he was “descended from a freewoman,” his grandmother, Mary Queen, and thus was being illegally held in bondage. In May 1794 the all-white jury decided that Mary Queen was not a slave, and thus Edward Queen should be freed and awarded 1997 pounds of tobacco, at least a third of which went to Queen's lawyers. Despite legal maneuvering by slaveholders to make freedom suits more difficult for the enslaved, as many as 50 of Edward Queen's enslaved relatives won their own freedom suits on the argument that Mary Queen was not a slave, and thus her descendants should not be enslaved. Joining me to help us learn more about freedom suits is William G. Thomas III, the Angle Chair in the Humanities and Professor of History at the University of Nebraska, and author of A Question of Freedom: The Families Who Challenged Slavery from the Nation's Founding to the Civil War.
