Today, my guest is a prolific cinematographer, accomplished photographer, and member of the American Society of Cinematographers, Dean Cundey A.S.C.Dean rose to fame for extraordinary cinematography in the 1980s and 1990s. His early start was working on the set of Halloween.  Dean is credited as director of photography on five Back To The Future films and Jurassic Park. The Halloween slasher franchise consisted of eleven films and was initially released in 1978. The films primarily focus on Michael Myers, who was committed to a sanitarium as a child for the murder of his sister, Judith Myers. Fifteen years later, he escapes to stalk and kill the people of the fictional town of Haddonfield, Illinois. Michael's killings occur on the holiday of Halloween, on which all of the films primarily take place. The second film, one of which Cundey served as director of photography, was based on Marty McFly, who had only just gotten back from the past when he is once again picked up by Dr. Emmett Brown and sent through time to the future. Marty's job in the future is to pose as his son to prevent him from being thrown in prison. Unfortunately, things get worse when the future changes the present. The three Back To The Future films Dean worked on grossed $388.8, $336, and $243 million globally, becoming all-time hits on budgets of $19, $40, and $40 million.Cundey is cited as being amongst some of the best directors of photography. In addition to his lighting skills, particularly in the famous hallway scene where the hidden face of Michael Myers, played by writer/director Nick Castle, is slowly revealed by way of a blue light next to the mask, he was among the first cinematographers to make use of a recent invention called the Steadicam, or paraglide. Some other shows and movies he's worked on include, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Tales of the Unexpected, Romancing the Stone, Invitation To Hell, Big Trouble in Little China, etc.Who Framed Roger Rabbit; A toon-hating detective is a cartoon rabbit's only hoping to prove his innocence when he is accused of murder. Basically, 'Toon star Roger is worried that his wife Jessica is playing pattycake with someone else, so the studio hires detective Eddie Valiant to snoop on her. But the stakes are quickly raised when Marvin Acme is found dead, and Roger is the prime suspect. Groundbreaking interaction between the live and animated characters, and lots of references to classic animation.Dean grew up an avid reader of the American Cinematographer magazines he would buy after school from a local camera shop close by. That was how his inspiration to pursue filmmaking came about. He shifted his focus to theater history while still taking some architectural design classes at California State University before he ultimately enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles film school. In 1993 Jurassic Park, Dean made a minor appearance as a boat crew member (Mate) while also staffed as director of photography. The film follows a pragmatic paleontologist visiting an almost complete theme park tasked with protecting a couple of kids after a power failure causes the park's cloned dinosaurs to run loose. Huge advancements in scientific technology have enabled a mogul to create an island full of living dinosaurs.A park employee attempts to steal dinosaur embryos, critical security systems are shut down, and it now becomes a race for survival with dinosaurs roaming freely over the island.Cundey holds over one hundred and fifty cinematography & photography credits for movies, television, and short films. That is no small feat in this business. The man has stayed busy and booked since graduation from film school. That kind of consistency in Hollywood is only doable by having extreme persistence and excellence. One of the many things he did to stay prepared and on top of his craft was investing into building himself a ‘super van' or one couple call it a cinematographer's heaven that contained every equipment (cameras, editing's tools, etc.) required to help him get work get and do work easily. We talk more about Dean joining The Book of Boba Fett and The Mandalorian crew as well. Check it all out in our chat.Enjoy my conversation with Dean Cundey.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/bulletproof-screenwriting-podcast--2881148/support.

Proving the solar skeptics wrong, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) now expects that utilities will add 54.5 Gigawatts of solar generation capacity in 2023. And this capacity does not include 6.4 Gw of residential installations and 1.7 Gw of commercial installations expected in 2023. SIDEBAR: a Gigawatt is a billion watts of power. In 1955 the eminent Dr. Emmett Brown stated that the only power source capable of generating 1.21 Gigawatts is a bolt of lightning. Obviously things have changed in the future. For over 20 years the EIA predicted that fossil fueled power generation would continue as our leading source of new power generation. They've been among the biggest solar skeptics, predicting that solar would never catch up. But now, solar-generated electricity is the cheapest source for new power. By far. Utility solar plants generate electricity for less than $0.02/kwh, and residential rooftop systems generate electricity for less than $0.08/kwh. Compare that to the $0.16/kwh average costs for power in the U.S., and $0.35/kwh for the average home in California. You may have heard about some of the solar industry "ups" (increased solar tax credits in the Inflation Reduction Act and more affordable battery storage systems) and "downs" (less favorable utility solar rates and tariffs on certain solar equipment). These ups and downs define what we in the industry call the Solar Coaster. Although challenging to predict, the one thing we can count on is that the economics for solar will continue to improve. Equipment costs are trending down, utility rates are increasing, and the reliability of the grid keeps getting worse and worse — all at the same time we are electrifying our buildings and transportation systems. To really understand the ups and downs in the solar industry it's necessary to look at the economic drivers in each of the main industry segments: Utility, Commercial and Residential. System costs, government policy and incumbent electric rates affect each of these market segments quite differently. In spite of this variability, the health of the overall solar industry is quite good. For a detailed dive into each of these market segments, please tune into this week's Energy Show.

In the basement of the downtown Convention Center, wedged between Emmett Brown and a DeLorean from “Back to the Future,” and the life sized Appa from “The Last Airbender,” two locals offered a very different kind of tale.“Hate Stings” is a graphic novel written by James Curry, and drawn by Tom Ngyuen, a renowned comics artist. Preview pages show a shirtless, muscular Black man astride a white horse. He's also depicted being whipped by a white overseer, who is screaming racial epithets. The enslaved man is the hero of this graphic novel. He's also one of Curry's forefathers.“An ancestor killed an overseer,” he explained. “A slave wanting water in Virginia, being denied it, and probably reaching a point of critical mass and killing the overseer in order to get that water. Then becoming an escaped slave.” Curry is a producer and filmmaker, but also an amateur historian who has delved deeply into the history of his Minnesotan Black family which settled in Hastings in the 1800s. Curry said his ancestor joined a Black regiment during the Civil War and eventually made his way to Minnesota. Relatives followed, and together they befriended the Wallaces, another Black family already settled in Hastings. The families formed Brown's Chapel AME, the only church in the area where Black people were able to worship. In 1907, the church was burned to the ground in an act of racist hate. The arsonist was never found. “It's an uncomfortable history,” Curry acknowledges. Telling the story to a younger audienceWhile this story has been documented in the past, including stories for MPR News' special project series North Star Journey, Curry says it's important to him that younger generations know about it too.“And I thought, since there was a Marvel/DC artist in Hastings, that we could bring the script, to life to create a graphic novel.” The fact that Nguyen was an artist of color also from Hastings was a draw for Curry. As a fairy godmother from Snow White strolls behind their convention booth, Nguyen says the project is very different from the work he's usually created in his career. “I've already gotten a wide range of reactions to it,” he said. “Most people are really polite, and they like it. Unfortunately, I've gotten the other end of the spectrum too. Questioning why we're even doing this. And some of that reaction, of course, it's tied to the political climate.” But Nguyen believes in the project, and said it allows him to stretch his creative muscles. “The whole history of African Americans and slaves and the trials and tribulations that they had to go through has always been fascinating to me.” He adds that the challenge of keeping things historically accurate adds another layer of inspiration. “I am having to pay attention to Jamie's script, because it's such a rich history, and I feel like I'm in school studying again,” he said. “But I'm learning too, and it forces me to go online and Google all these historical references and books, so I can draw things a little more accurately to the time period that we're trying to tell the story.” “It's just a nice change of pace from doing superheroes all the time,” he added. The completed book is available at comic book stores around the Twin Cities. But Curry says this is only the beginning, and he thinks the project could eventually become a trilogy.

Today, my guest is a prolific cinematographer, accomplished photographer, and member of the American Society of Cinematographers, Dean Cundey.Dean rose to fame for extraordinary cinematography in the 1980s and 1990s. In addition to his lighting skills, particularly in the famous hallway scene where the hidden face of Michael Myers is slowly revealed by way of a blue light next to the mask, he was among the first cinematographers to make use of a recent invention called the Steadicam, or paraglide. Huge advancements in scientific technology have enabled a mogul to create an island full of living dinosaurs. A park employee attempts to steal dinosaur embryos, critical security systems are shut down, and it now becomes a race for survival with dinosaurs roaming freely over the island.Cundey holds over one hundred and fifty cinematography & photography credits for movies, television, and short films. That is no small feat in this business. The man has stayed busy and booked since graduation from film school. That kind of consistency in Hollywood is only doable by having extreme persistence and excellence. One of the many things he did to stay prepared and on top of his craft was investing into building himself a ‘super van' or one couple call it a cinematographer's heaven that contained every equipment (cameras, editings tools, etc.) required to help him get work get and do work easily. We talk more about this in our chat.Enjoy my conversation with Dean Cundey.

The new Netflix film starring Ryan Reynolds, Mark Ruffalo, and Jennifer Garner is currently one of the most popular titles on OTT. The film tells the story of a man who travels back in time and teams up with his younger self and deceased father to help save the future. So here are some interesting trivia about the popular film, The Adam Project. Let's get going. The film was originally titled Our Name is Adam with Tom Cruise cast as the lead, all the way back in 2012. However, the project was in limbo at Paramount for years before Netflix acquired the rights in 2020 with Shawn Levy as director and Ryan Reynolds replacing Tom Cruise as the lead. In a particular scene, Mark Ruffalo's character Louis Reed insinuates that he understood the reference seen on one of his student's t-shirts during a lecture. The picture in the t-shirt is of actor Nicolas Cage but with actor John Travolta's name underneath it. It is in fact a reference to Cage and Travolta's hit film Face-Off, where they swap faces. This is Mark Ruffalo's third film in which time travelling is involved. The first one was 13 Going on 30, alongside Jennifer Garner, and the second one was Avengers: Endgame.Ryan Reynolds, Mark Ruffalo, Jennifer Garner, and Zoe Saldana have all portrayed Marvel superheroes. Reynolds as Wade Wilson/Deadpool, Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/Hulk, and Saldana as Gamora. However, Garner's role is probably lesser-known or even forgotten - she played the role of Elektra in the 2003 film Daredevil opposite her future spouse Ben Affleck, as well in the standalone spin-off film titled Elektra. Both films were unfortunately poorly received by critics and audiences. The Adam Project has paid homage to another sci-fi film franchise about time travelling, which is the Back to the Future trilogy. The dog in The Adam Project is named Hawking, similar to how Christopher Lloyd's character, Dr Emmett Brown named his dogs Copernic and Einstein, after famous scientists. In fact, Lloyd makes an appearance in one of the promotion videos by Netflix for The Adam Project. This film is trending currently on OTT, Catch it streaming exclusively on Netflix.Well that's the Now You Know episode for today on OTTplay, until the next podcast it's  your host Nikhil signing out.

In 1955, Dr. Emmett Brown invented the Flux Capacitor . . . after standing on the edge of his toilet to hang a clock, then slipping and hitting his head on the edge of the sink. The Flux Capacitor is what makes time travel possible, you know. 49 years ago, in 1970, Led Zeppelin released "Immigrant Song"

Learn some untold tales from Back to the Future as told by Back to the Future co-writer Bob Gale.Affiliate link included. Transcript below:Today we're going back in time. It will be a look at Back To The Future: Untold Tales and Alternate Timelines straight ahead.Welcome to the Classy Comics Podcast where we search for the best comics in the universe. From Boise, Idaho here is your host, Adam Graham. The Back To The Future film trilogy followed the adventures of Marty McFly, a average teenager from Hill Valley, California and Dr. Emmett Brown, an eccentric scientist who discovered time travel. I won't even try to recap all of those films. Probably listeners can be divided into two categories: either those who have seen this trilogy or those who are under thirty years old. If you've not seen the film series I recommend it, and you can't help but spoil some details of the film so this would be a good time to stop listening to the episode and go and watch all three films and then come back. Well, that's OK, just pause it, we'll still be here. At any rate, Back To The Future continues to be enjoyed by those who first saw it. It has a great charm about it even though the future isn't quite what it used to be. We don't really have flying cars or policeman with reader boards on their hats. The appeal of the film is the characters, the fun and just all of the crazy elements that they managed to work into that film series. With the thirtieth anniversary of the film's release IDW commissioned a four-issue comic book mini-series and it later became an ongoing series. The subtitle of the comic and of the trade is Untold Tales and Alternate Timelines. What it really has the nice benefit of is that the entire book is written by Bob Gayle who actually co-wrote the film, so that gives it a bit more authority even if just some random person got commissioned to write Back To The Future comics. And Gayle said he considered a lot of different ideas for what he might do with the story. Would he tell a story about Marty McFly older and in the present day or would he tell some sort of other story to update Back To The Future, maybe set it in the modern day and have them go back to another time. For Gayle, he decided that what people really liked was these characters in these situations and that he really shouldn't mess with that and go in some other direction. So, essentially, what this book does is fill in the gaps and answer questions about what happened prior to the films and in between the films. At the end of the third movie it's revealed that Doc married the schoolteacher he met in old West Hill Valley and they had two sons: Jules and Verne, and he built a time machine that was made out of a locomotive. And a framing device is Doc Brown talking to his wife and kids about his past which is in the future. It is very confusing being married to a time traveler, and you get to read a lot of things such as how Doc met Marty, and about how Doc actually worked on the Manhattan Project and what he did to get on that, how Doc Brown's house burned down, how Marty met Jennifer. To be honest, most of the first part of the book is kind of OK and more mildly interesting and occasionally amusing than anything else. Most of this is not going to knock your socks off. How much you enjoy this is really going to depend on how much you are into the movies. There are people who have watched the movies over and over and over again, the entire trilogy, and want to have every sort of detail filled in, then you're absolutely going to love this that you know what happened – even if what happened while there was a reason that they didn't film it in the first place. The most of it is fine. I think the only one that seemed a little bit silly was the idea that Marty's parents came looking for Calvin Klein, i.
