Kirsten and Rachel talk to Megan Ixim, aka Ms. Gigggles, about the human right to pleasure, especially through sex, food and self-expression -- no matter who you are or what you look like. Rachel shares about Megan's posing class, the joy of absurdity and spectacle, and the idea that flattering angles are a fallacy. They talk about the misuse of the terms "grooming" and "indoctrination", and the unwillingness to make room for BIPOC spaces. Kirsten shares some cringe memories as a professional dancer, and Rachel shares about playing disturbing characters in musical theater. The conversation moves to current events regarding abortion restrictions, the violence that permeates American culture, and the brave parents and educators that are trying to help the next generation. Today on the show, I'm so excited to have Katie McCrindle on as my guest t. Katie McCrindle (she/they) is a Body Liberation Counsellor, Registered Social Worker and Fat Activist who lives and works in Hamilton, Ontario. She identifies as fat as a way of reclaiming the word and situating herself in a political identity. She believes that every body is inherently worthy, and those whose bodies are considered “larger” deserve to proudly take up space in this society which is both overtly and insidiously fat-phobic. Katie is passionate about body/fat liberation and about creating fat community, both online and off, and believes that the body holds wisdom if you can figure out how to listen. Katie loves weird dancing, being in nature, and cuddling with her cat, Luna.Katie and I met in 2019 and began working collaboratively to form the Be Abundant workshop series, which was a size exclusive space for folks in bigger/ps/fat bodies. For us, creating that network and community was a big way for us to step into our work feeling more confident in what we had to offer in the world of body liberation. In this episode Katie and I discuss Fat activism and the co-opting of the term “body positive”, we walk about size exclusive spaces and community creation and Body Image feelings in the “re-opening”world.If the part of the conversation about having some difficult body image feelings as we come back together in person resonated, and you want to know more about our workshop Coping with the new new normal , make sure to sign up for my newsletter, or to follow me on Instagram. She talks about having her two sons, the anxiety she faced during pregnancy, and how "it is so exaggerated the way that weight impacts fertility." Nicola's goal is to support people and help them advocate for themselves. She talks about the importance of "weight-inclusive" fertility care, helping people believe and understand that they are worthy of that care, and why "the majority of clinics will not support fat people, and it's shocking." Should you embrace your curves by smearing yourself in Dove products, or drink slimfast and chase the thin dream? Either way, the same giant corporation will benefit. Do what you need to do, but listen to this podcast too! Oriana talks with the artist, psychotherapist and fat activist Charlotte Cooper, who is an outlier in every field in which she takes part. They discuss what it takes to keep doing your thing and valuing it and yourself along the way, despite reactions ranging from indifference to intolerance and hate. Cooper, who considers her psychotherapy practice to be revolutionary, advises that compassion is necessary to the creative process. Dr Oriana Fox is a London-based, New York-born artist with a PhD in self-disclosure. She puts her expertise to work as the host of the talk show performance piece The O Show .Charlotte Cooper is an artist, writer, psychotherapist and activist. It seems like there's nothing she doesn't do; she dances, makes music, produces zines and genealogies. She has collaborated with an enviable list of artists and most prominently with her girlfriend Kay Hyatt. The two perform as Homosexual Death Drive, a genre-defying band with irreverent lyrics and eye-popping music videos. Cooper's decades-long work on fat, like her performance practice, defies categorisation. A new edition of her book Fat Activism: A Radical Social Movement, will be available in June 2021. If you've never heard of a "Fat Activist," you're about to! Amanda Martinez Beck, the author of Lovely and the co-host of the Fat and Faithful podcast, is one of those, and she has a lot of really smart and wise things to say to EVERY SINGLE NUMBER about the lies they believe about their bodies. Yes, even 4s. We also talk about why 2s are constantly answering personal questions by talking about their family members, how marathons can kill you, and why talking about bodies is so dang awkward in the first place. ALSO: Bleep you, enneathought. You're a jerk. ---- Want more NCE? Go check our Patreon! https://www.patreon.com/nochillpodcast

Fat activist and Comfy Fat founder J Aprileo joins us to discuss how to find comfort in a larger body without weight loss; how improving accessibility for fat people can benefit people of all sizes; how fatphobia shows up in progressive spaces and in healthcare; the intersections of gender identity, body size, and body acceptance; learning to embrace their nonbinary identity without shrinking their body; and so much more! Plus, Christy answers a listener question about how to deal with plantar fasciitis (and why weight loss is NOT the answer). J is a nonbinary freelance writer and the founder of Comfy Fat, a site dedicated to sharing resources for plus-size people, trans advocacy, and the intersections of size and gender. J creates content not only to help make the world a little more accessible for fat folks, but also to try and just be the representation they wish they'd had growing up. They live in the midwest with their partner Corissa of Fat Girl Flow, two lovely pups, and one very independent calico cat. Find them online at ComfyFat.com. Charlotte Cooper is a Psychotherapist, Cultural Worker and Fat Activist. “The therapy I do, and maybe therapy in general enables people to think about their lives in ways they hadn’t considered before. It’s about illuminating the dusty corners that they may have forgotten or overlooked, and showing them that there may be value in those places. […] We are in society, and we’re bound by the tensions and rules of society, but there's still a lot of space for agency and choice within those strictures.” This episode originally aired on 7 March 2018.
I’m replaying a fan favorite (and one of my favorite episodes) of Body Kindness from one of my favorite teachers. What if we all were fat activists? It’s an interesting thought for people who are finally at the place of rejecting diets and a singular (thin) standard for beauty and health. Activism is not always getting angry and standing on the street with a sign screaming. Sometimes it IS that, but there are lots of forms of “activism” if you take a broader definition. You can throw a pool party and rock your swimwear. You can tell the nurse, “I don’t step on the scale.” You can tell yourself “I am on your side” and anyone who treats you badly based on weight can get the push back. Fat activism is just as much about practicing self-care and self-compassion as it is about getting angry. Tune in to hear my conversation with long-time Fat Activist and author of Fat!So? Marilyn Wann joins me to discuss why it’s wrong when people say “you should lose weight for health reasons”. She shares ideas for fat activism that go beyond getting angry and protesting in the streets to include meaningful choices anyone can make to reject body oppression and instead, practice self-care. Fat body activist Amanda Levitt speaks with co-hosts Eddie Ytuarte and Adrienne Lauby why being fat does not mean she is a person with a disability However, do the two communities share similar characteristics or experiences? Do us disabled share common barriers like facing various forms of discrimination or ….or being victimized by negative and ugly stereotypes. Are we being silly when we are told that one of the reasons people are fat is that we eat to much fast food in contemporary USA. What does Amanda think about some of the superficial impressions; but yes–we want to know why being fat is not being disabled. The post Amanda Levitt, Fat Activist appeared first on KPFA.
