The names of most of those who will help to decide the next Archbishop of Canterbury were announced this week: five representatives of the global Anglican Communion, along with those selected from among the central members elected by the General Synod for a five-year term. Previously, the Canterbury Crown Nominations Commission (CNC) has had only one representative of the Anglican Communion, but this was increased to five after a Synod vote in 2022. The Bishop of Chelmsford, Dr Guli Francis-Dehqani, was in Jerusalem last week when the Israel-Hamas ceasefire deal was agreed. Shortly after returning from the Holy Land, she spoke to Francis Martin about the reaction to the deal on the ground; the prospects for long-term peace in the region; and more widely about the visit, which included meeting Layan Nasir, a young Anglican woman from Birzeit who was released in December, after eight months in “administrative detention”. “As a Christian and as a person of prayer, I have to continue to hope that people of peace, people who want to see reconciliation, people who believe in justice, will find a will and a way to work together eventually to lead to a peaceful solution,” she said. The Bell by Iris Murdoch is the choice for this month's Church Times Book Club. On the podcast this week, the Bishop of Gloucester, the Rt Revd Rachel Treweek, is interviewed by Francis Martin about her visit this month to Jerusalem and the occupied West Bank. Since the “awful atrocities” committed by Hamas on 7 October and the subsequent “horrors of the war in Gaza”, she said, “there has been an absence of a focus on the West Bank. “One of the main points of my trip was to go to the West Bank, to listen to the voices of Palestinian Christians, to see how things are for them in the light of all that's been going on since 7 October, but being acutely aware that things have been going on for years and years.” During the visit, she met the family of Layan Nasir, the 23-year-old Anglican who has been detained by Israel since April. “We are praying and speaking out loudly in the hope that, when her case is heard, when the review happens at the beginning of August, that she will be released back to her family, who simply want her home.” Her itinerary also included a visit to the Military Court attached to Ofer Prison, near the West Bank city of Ramallah; a visit to the Armenian Quarter of Jerusalem, where Christians are trying to protect their land from development; and prayer in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Stewart McCulloch joined Christians Against Poverty (CAP) at the start of the year as its new chief executive. He previously led the charity Stewardship. CAP's latest report says that 46 per cent of its clients have considered taking their own life as a way out of their debt, and nine out of ten have reported having sleepless nights from financial anxiety (News, 24 May). On the podcast this week, Francis Martin interviews Mr McCulloch about the findings of the report, as well as how the cost-of-living crisis is affecting CAP's clients. [the war] needs to stop and it needs to stop now,” she says. “All the hostages need to be released. There needs to be unrestricted aid allowed into Gaza. . . in order to provide the possibility to begin talking. "This is not just for the Palestinians, it's also for the Israelis. I don't see any advantage in this war for Israel. Welcome to a special edition of the Church Times podcast, recorded on Friday 6 October in Armenia. In this episode, Francis Martin, a reporter for the Church Times, interviews the Archbishop of Canterbury at the end of his trip to Rome and the South Caucasus. Albert Bernhard Frank đã phát hiện ra rằng bộ phận tồn tại ổn định của nấm truffle nằm sâu trong lòng đất, với vô vàn các sợi có kích thước hết sức nhỏ bé. Cây nấm, bộ phận nổi trên mặt đất, trên thực tế chỉ là ‘‘cơ quan sinh sản'', cho phép phát tán các bào tử nấm. Các bộ phận siêu nhỏ tồn tại ổn định nằm trong lòng đất nối liền với các rễ cây, nhà khoa học người Phổ gọi đây là hiện tượng ‘‘nấm rễ cộng sinh'' (mycorhize). Không chỉ có nấm truffle, mà hàng nghìn loài nấm cũng tồn tại theo một cơ chế tương tự. Khi phát hiện nhiều “nấm rễ cộng sinh” ở cây sồi, Albert Bernhard Frank đặt câu hỏi : Phải chăng các loài nấm như vậy giúp cây phát triển ? Năm 1892, ông viết một bài báo, với nhận định : nếu cắt bỏ nấm rễ của cây thông, loại cây này sẽ phát triển không tốt… (…) Khi người phương Tây di thực các loại thông đến những vùng đất ở Nam Mỹ và châu Phi, thoạt tiên, thông không thể phát triển được nếu không có các loại nấm rễ. Đối với các loại cây thông phát triển tốt ở Nam Mỹ, đến mùa, người ta thấy trên rễ chúng cùng các loại nấm như ở châu Âu''.Cây cung cấp ‘‘đường'' cho nấm, nấm ‘‘đi chợ'' giúp câyNấm rễ cộng sinh sống trên các mô rễ của cây chủ, sống nhờ vào cây chủ, nhưng tham gia vào thúc đẩy sự sống của cây chủ, trái ngược với các loại nấm hoại sinh, nấm phân giải chất hữu cơ sống nhờ vào các thực thể hữu cơ chết, phân huỷ, hay các loại nấm ký sinh xâm nhập vào cơ thể vật chủ, gây bệnh và thậm chí tiêu diệt vật chủ. Nấm rễ cộng sinh cụ thể như thế nào với cây? Giáo sư Marc-André Selosse giải thích :‘‘Trong thế kỷ 20, nhiều công trình nghiên cứu đã cho thấy nấm rễ nhận được từ cây chất đường, chắc chắn là các loại vitamin, và trong nhiều trường hợp cả các axit béo, tức các sản phẩm có được nhờ ở tiến trình quang hợp của cây. Ngược lại, nấm làm việc công việc ‘‘đi chợ'' trong lòng đất, hay nói cách khác lấy từ đất các chất azot, photphat, potasium, các chất vi lượng, nước… để tự nuôi nó, nhưng cũng để nuôi cây (…) Trong lòng đất có rất nhiều chất, nhưng tồn tại rất tản mát. Nấm rễ nhỏ li ti làm công việc hút lấy các nguồn dưỡng chất, với hiệu suất cao hơn nhiều so với các rễ cây to. Nấm rễ cũng làm cả công việc bảo vệ rễ cây. Khi quan sát rễ cây ở các vùng ôn đới, cả Nam bán cầu cũng như Bắc bán cầu, và một số nơi ở xứ nhiệt đới, nấm rễ làm nên một thứ vỏ bọc bao xung quanh rễ cây. Có một số loại thông hay bạch đàn không thể mọc được trên đất đá vôi chẳng hạn, nếu không có nấm cộng sinh bao bọc rễ. Nấm rễ giúp cây trong việc tiếp nhận calcium, điều hoà lượng nước tiếp nhận, và cả chống lại các vi sinh vật có hại tấn công rễ. Và có một điều tinh vi, quan trọng khác mới được phát hiện gần đây, đó là nấm rễ giúp cả việc tăng cường hệ miễn dịch của cây, đối với toàn bộ cây, không chỉ với rễ cây. Tóm lại, nấm rễ bảo vệ cây, và và hoạt động tương trợ này diễn ra có tổ chức, bởi khi bảo vệ cây, nấm cũng bảo vệ chính kho thực phẩm của mình''.Không có “nấm” thì không có rừngNấm rễ cộng sinh mang lại sự sống cho đại đa số các hệ sinh thái trên mặt đất là điều mà giới khoa học, và một số định chế quốc tế ghi nhận từ khá lâu nay. Hội Đồng Toàn Châu Âu (Council of Europe), trong một văn bản năm 2001, liên quan đến nấm, làm rõ Phụ lục 1 Công ước Bern (tức Công ước Bảo tồn Thiên nhiên hoang dã ở châu Âu, có hiệu lực từ năm 1982), nhấn mạnh: “Các loài nấm rễ tham gia vào nhiều quan hệ cộng sinh : khoảng 85% cây thân gỗ có cơ chế cộng sinh nấm rễ, và đây là điều quan trọng nhất trong các chức năng sinh thái của chúng – không có nấm rễ thì sẽ không có rừng, và không có các hệ sinh thái tự nhiên có tổ chức khác''.Châu Âu có hai tổ chức toàn châu lục bảo vệ nấm rễ : Hội đồng châu Âu Bảo tồn Nấm (The European Council for the Conservation of Fungi - ECCF), thành lập từ năm 1985, và Hiệp hội chuyên về Nấm rễ châu Âu (European Mycological Association - EMA), thành lập năm 2003. Không kể các hiệp hội quốc gia nhiều nước tồn tại từ lâu đời. Hiệp hội nấm rễ Pháp (Société mycologique de France) xuất hiện từ năm 1884, cùng thời với phát hiện của nhà nghiên cứu người Phổ.Từ rừng bị hâm nóng...Tuy nhiên, tại châu Âu và với quốc tế nói chung, trong một thời gian dài nấm rễ về cơ bản vẫn chỉ được nhìn nhận về phương diện đa dạng sinh học, không trực tiếp liên quan đến chuyện biến đổi khí hậu. Cuộc chiến bảo vệ đa dạng sinh học diễn ra gần như độc lập với cuộc chiến chống biến đổi khí hậu. Tuy nhiên, biến đổi khí hậu ngày càng tác động mạnh mẽ đến sinh giới. Đa dạng sinh học ngày càng trở thành nạn nhân của việc trái đất bị hâm nóng. Rừng bị biến đổi khí hậu làm cho suy yếu đến mức mà nhiều nơi rừng trở thành nguồn phát thải khí CO2, thay vì là nơi hấp thụ. Vai trò của nấm rễ với biến đổi khí hậu ngày càng trở thành chuyện được quan tâm hàng đầu trong các nghiên cứu về rừng. Nấm rễ được hy vọng như một cứu tinh (1).Nhìn chung ‘‘nấm rễ'' có vai trò như thế nào trong việc hấp thu khí thải CO2 ? Về vấn đề này, giáo sư Selosse lấy trường hợp rừng ở khu vực ôn đới làm ví dụ giải thích:‘‘Nấm rễ có hai vai trò trong việc hấp thu khí thải CO2. Vai trò gián tiếp và vai trò trực tiếp. Vai trò gián tiếp khi nấm rễ giúp cây phát triển. Khi cây hút khí thải CO2 chính là nhờ sự trợ giúp của nấm rễ. Vai trò thứ hai là trực tiếp hấp thụ cac-bon. Các nấm rễ ở xứ ôn đới rất phàm ăn cac-bon. Nấm rễ tiếp thu đến 40% lượng cac-bon được cây hấp thu trong quá trình quang hợp. Đây là một con số cực lớn. Đặc điểm thứ hai là nấm rễ xứ ôn đới chậm chuyển hoá : trước hết do nấm rễ sống lâu hơn và khi chết, xác của chúng cũng phân huỷ rất chậm''.... đến thừa nhận ‘‘vai trò then chốt với khí hậu'' của nấm rễ Năm 2019 lần đầu tiên giới khoa học tiến hành một nghiên cứu quy mô về đa dạng sinh học toàn cầu, với tổng cộng 55 triệu cây, hơn 32.000 giống loài, đại diện cho 97% diện tích trái đất, với sự tham gia của khoảng 250 nhà khoa học từ 50 quốc gia. Nghiên cứu Global Forest Biodiversity Initiative (GFBI), với sự tham gia của Viện nghiên cứu nông học vì phát triển Pháp (Cirad) trong ban điều hành, khẳng định ‘‘vai trò then chốt trong việc điều chỉnh khí hậu'' của quan hệ cộng sinh nấm rễ với cây nói riêng và giữa các vi sinh vật với cây nói chung.Vai trò to lớn của quan hệ nấm rễ cộng sinh với ‘‘điều chỉnh khí hậu'' được nhìn nhận cùng lúc với việc giới nghiên cứu chỉ ra quan hệ cộng sinh nấm rễ này lại đang bị chính biến đổi khí hậu tác động mạnh mẽ. Chưa kể tác động của việc rừng bị phá huỷ, bị khai thác theo lối công nghiệp hóa, đất đai bị can thiệp của con người làm suy thoái với phân bón, thuốc trừ sâu, đô thị hóa…(2) Theo điều tra nói trên của GFBI, khoảng 10% nấm “ngoại cộng sinh” (ectomycorrhizal fungi), tức loại nấm rễ sống bao quanh rễ cây (sống chủ yếu ở xứ ôn đới), như giáo sư Selosse nêu trên, có nguy cơ biến mất trước năm 2070. Mà đây lại chính là họ nấm rễ có vai trò then chốt hơn cả đối với việc hấp thu khí thải gây hiệu ứng nhà kính.Thế giới nấm, ‘‘điểm quyết đấu'' của cuộc chiến Khí hậu-Đa dạng sinh họcBiến đổi khí hậu và các hoạt động của con người đe dọa các hệ sinh thái, đảo lộn đa dạng sinh học toàn cầu ngay trong lòng đất - nền tảng của đời sống sinh giới. Tuy nhiên cũng chính biến đổi khí hậu và các biến động ghê gớm khác cũng làm nổi bật tầm quan trọng hàng đầu của các hệ vi sinh vật nhỏ bé, mong manh trong đất đối với sự ổn định của khí hậu. Việc nhận diện đầy đủ sự tồn tại đa dạng và vô cùng tinh vi của chúng, cùng nỗ lực bảo vệ chúng đang dần dần trở thành một ‘‘điểm quyết đấu'' mới của cuộc chiến kép - bảo vệ khí hậu, bảo vệ đa dạng sinh học (3).Nấm rễ và thế giới các vi sinh vật nói chung lâu nay nằm ở vị trí chiếu dưới trong cuộc chiến bảo vệ đa dạng sinh học. Trong danh sách đỏ năm 2022 của Liên minh Bảo tồn Thiên nhiên Quốc tế (IUCN), chỉ có 640 loài nấm, trong lúc có hơn 62.000 động vật và hơn 60.000 thực vật (iucnredlist.org).Cho đến nay, các nhà khoa học mới chỉ xác định được khoảng vài chục nghìn loài nấm rễ, trong lúc số chủng loại nấm rễ toàn cầu có thể có đến hàng trăm nghìn loài, thậm chí hàng triệu. Quan hệ cộng sinh rễ - nấm không phải chỉ là giữa một loại nấm với một cây mà nhiều nấm cộng sinh với cùng một cây, và các nấm rễ lại có quan hệ liên thông tạo thành một mạng lưới liên kết rộng lớn, cây cối liên hệ với nhau thông qua nấm rễ.Nhà sinh học Toby Skiers (giáo sư Đại học Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Hà Lan) ví các mạng lưới nấm rễ như “bộ xương của đất”. Nhờ mạng lưới sợi nấm, đất trở nên thông thoáng hơn, ít bị nén chặt hơn, ổn định hơn. Xói mòn ít hơn và giữ nước tốt hơn. Nấm rễ là cả một thế giới mênh mông. Dưới lòng đất, các sợi nấm mỏng manh, vô hình, nhưng có tổng số chiều dài ghê gớm : hàng cây số sợi nấm ẩn trong một centimet khối đất, và nếu tính trên diện tích toàn thế giới, chiều dài tổng cộng của các mạng sợi nấm của 10cm đất đầu tiên dưới lòng đất tương đương với 450 x 1024 km, tức bằng khoảng một nửa chiều rộng của dải Ngân Hà của chúng ta.Tại nhiều khu vực, nấm rễ có thể chiếm đến 50% tổng trọng lượng sinh khối. Nhà nấm rễ học Stephan Declerck, phụ trách kho lưu trữ nấm rễ lớn nhất thế giới (Đại họcUCLouvain, Bỉ), cho biết cơ thể sống lớn nhất thế giới hiện nay chính là nấm. Một ‘‘con'' nấm thuộc loài Armillaria Ostoyae, ở công viên quốc gia Oregon (miền tây nước Mỹ), nặng khoảng 600 tấn, trải rộng trên diện tích 8,9 km² trong lòng đất, có tuổi đời từ ít nhất 2.400 năm đến 8.000 năm. Cả một thế giới kỳ lạ, phi thường nằm ngay dưới bàn chân ta.SPUN thám hiểm ‘‘vũ trụ'' các mạng lưới “nấm rễ” toàn cầuThực tế nấm rễ cộng sinh chính là “điểm mù của cuộc chiến chống biến đổi khí hậu'', như nhận định của các nhà khoa học nhóm SPUN (Society for the Protection of Underground Network), do khoa học gia Hà Lan Toby Skiers và một số đồng nghiệp chủ trì. Chương trình lập bản đồ toàn cầu đầu tiên về thế giới chuyên về các loài nấm trong lòng đất, khởi sự từ 2021. SPUN hy vọng tìm thấy chính trong “điểm mù” tri thức đó các bí quyết giúp nhân loại thoát hiểm đại thảm họa khí hậu. Dự án SPUN chủ trương lập bản đồ chi tiết đầy đủ về nấm rễ toàn cầu, tìm hiểu về khả năng cất giữ CO2 khổng lồ của loài sinh vật đặc biệt này, bảo vệ các mạng lưới nấm rễ bị đe dọa.Kế thừa cơ sở dữ liệu khổng lồ GlobalFungi (tập hợp các thành tựu về nghiên cứu nấm rễ toàn cầu trong 20 năm qua), nhờ ở một phần ở trí thông minh nhân tạo và kỹ thuật mô hình hoá (của các chuyên gia Crowther Lab - Đại học Bách khoa quốc gia Zurich), chương trình lập bản đồ nấm rễ toàn cầu 150 triệu km² (của SPUN) về cơ bản có thể “về đích trong hơn 5 năm tới”, theo chuyên gia Pháp Francis Martin, thành viên Hội đồng khoa học của SPUN.Cây cối trên cạn: Hậu duệ của ‘‘cuộc kết hôn giữa nấm và tảo biển'' Trong một kết quả nghiên cứu được công bố trên tạp chí Current Biology, trên quy mô toàn cầu, nấm rễ có thể hấp thu đến 13,2 tỷ tấn CO2, chiếm khoảng một phần ba lượng khí thải toàn cầu. Các nhà nghiên cứu cũng cho biết thực vật có liên quan đến nấm rễ cộng sinh có thể hấp thụ lượng cac-bon nhiều gấp 8 lần so với thực vật không có liên hệ với nấm. Hiện tại, những dự báo về khả năng hấp thu CO2 to lớn của nấm rễ vẫn chỉ là ước tính, với độ sai số ắt là khá cao, bởi vũ trụ các mạng lưới nấm rễ trong lòng đất là điều còn rất ít được biết đến.Dù sao có một điều chắc chắn, được giới chuyên môn đồng thuận, đó là ‘‘cơ chế cộng sinh nấm rễ'' chính là điều đã giúp cho sự sống nở rộ trên đất liền. Cơ chế cộng sinh này đã từng cho phép “hình thành các hệ sinh thái trên cạn”. Nhờ đó mà các loài tảo biển có thể di cư thành công lên mặt đất cách nay từ 485 triệu đến 443 triệu năm, giai đoạn mà các nhà cổ sinh vật học gọi là kỷ ‘‘Ordovic'' (4).Khác hẳn với đại dương, nơi tảo cùng lúc có được ánh sáng, nước, cac-bon, khoáng chất. Đất liền khác hẳn. Ánh sáng và cac-bon có trong không khí, trong lúc nước và khoáng chất nằm trong lòng đất. Để thành công trong cuộc di thực này, tảo biển đã “ký kết một thoả ước hôn nhân lâu dài” với nấm. Tảo cấp cho nấm đường và các axit béo, nấm cấp cho tảo các khoảng chất nhờ các hệ thống sợi mỏng manh với khối lượng nhỏ hơn rễ đến hàng trăm lần, nhưng vươn xa. Đây chính là lý do khiến quan hệ cộng sinh nấm rễ liên quan đến đại đa số cây cối. Cây cối trên mặt đất là các hậu duệ của cuộc hôn nhân quyết định này.Đối với nhà sinh học tiến hoá Toby Skiers, ‘‘phá hủy quan hệ đối tác lâu đời hàng trăm triệu năm này cũng chính là tự huỷ hoại thực sự khả năng của con người ngăn chặn biến đối khí hậu”.“Hệ thống internet trong rừng'' và những Cây Mẹ linh thiêngNấm rễ thúc đẩy sự phát triển của các loài thực vật, giúp lưu giữ cac-bon trong cây, và trong lòng đất. Chức năng hỗ trợ dinh dưỡng cho cây là điều đã được biết rõ, nhưng chức năng hấp thu khí thải của nấm rễ vẫn còn nhiều bí ẩn. Khoảng 75% khí thải gây hiệu ứng nhà kính được tích lại trong lòng đất. Hiểu biết tốt hơn về các mạng lưới nấm rễ sẽ giúp cho việc can thiệp kịp thời để bảo vệ các khu vực đa dạng sinh học bị suy yếu, để không những giúp đất tiếp tục duy trì việc cất giữ khí thải (theo một tính toán hồi 2016, của nhóm nghiên cứu với nhà khí hậu học Thomas W. Crowthe là đồng tác giả, nhiệt độ Trái đất tăng 1°C đi liền với việc đất giải phóng khoảng 30 tỷ tấn khí thải, tương đương với lượng khí thải hàng năm hiện nay) (reseauactionclimat.net), mà còn có thể thúc đẩy các mạng lưới nấm rễ hấp thu nhiều cac-bon hơn nữa. Về mặt này, nấm rễ cộng sinh có thể là một giải pháp then chốt. Hiểu rõ hơn vai trò của nấm rễ, và sự hình thành chậm rãi của loài sinh vật đặc biệt này cũng làm gia tăng cảnh giác trước các giải pháp dễ dãi như trồng rừng mới thay cho các khu rừng tự nhiên bị phá hủy (kế hoạch 1.000 tỉ cây xanh của Diễn đàn Kinh tế Thế giới tung ra năm 2020) (5).Những hiểu biết sâu hơn về đời sống các vi sinh vật trong lòng đất ngày càng làm lộ rõ sự kỳ diệu khôn cùng của các hệ sinh thái. Nhà sinh thái học kỳ cựu về rừng, bà Suzanne Simard, người Canada, từ rất sớm, vào năm 1997, đã từng ví các mạng lưới nấm rễ cộng sinh như một “hệ thống internet” ngầm trong lòng đất, liên kết cả một rừng cây. Cây cối nhờ vào hệ thống này mà có thể “tương trợ” nhau, “các cây mẹ” hỗ trợ đàn cây con. Đây là điều gây cảm hứng lớn cho đạo diễn James Cameron khi làm bộ phim Avatar, ca ngợi sự huyền nhiệm của rừng, mối quan hệ tâm linh nối kết cộng đồng thổ dân với Mẹ Cây linh thiêng (xem thêm phần ''Cây cối hợp tác qua mạng lưới nấm rễ:‘‘Trực giác khoa học'', ‘‘Niềm tin tâm linh'' hay ‘‘Khái quát hóa vội vã'' ?'').Bí quyết diệu kỳ của “nấm-rễ” : Loài người có kịp rút các bài học? Trong cái rủi có thể có cái may. Cuộc đại khủng hoảng về môi trường, khí hậu cũng có thể là cơ hội để nhân loại đương đại trở lại với những bài học căn cốt của thiên nhiên. Tạp chí xin khép lại với một nhận định của giáo sư Marc-André Selosse. Trong cuốn ‘‘Jamais seul. Ces microbes qui construisent les plantes, les animaux et les civilisations'' (tạm dịch là‘‘Không bao giờ cô độc. Các vi sinh vật kiến tạo nên các loài thực vật, động vật và các nền văn minh'') (2017), nhà sinh học, chuyên gia nấm rễ Viện bảo tàng Quốc gia về Lịch sử Tự nhiên Pháp, kêu gọi chúng ta thứ tạm thời rời bỏ cách nhìn khô cứng coi mỗi ‘‘thực thể'' là một tồn tại biệt lập (The Conversation.com).Trong thế giới các vi sinh vật, mọi thứ ‘‘trước hết là tương tác'', liên tục trong tương tác. Ranh giới giữa thực thể này và thực thể khác rất khó xác định. Trong thế giới ‘‘nấm rễ cộng sinh'', khó có thể nói chắc đâu là cây, đâu là nấm. Đường biên hết sức co giãn. Nấm rễ thông qua các protein nhỏ bé ‘‘làm biến đổi sự vận hành của các tế bào cây, tác động đến quá trình hoạt hóa thông tin di truyền chứa trong gien (hay ‘‘biểu hiện gien'')'' (6). Một ‘‘thực thể cây'', thông qua các mạng lưới sợi nấm, trao đổi dinh dưỡng và cả thông tin với các cây hàng xóm, và quá trình cứ thế tiếp tục. ''Thực thể cây mở rộng'' kiểu như vậy có thể liên quan đến toàn bộ một khu rừng, hay một đồng cỏ. Trong thế giới đó, ‘‘mỗi vi sinh vật là một giao điểm trong cả một mạng lưới tương tác khổng lồ'', mênh mông như ‘‘đại dương''.Cái thế giới nhỏ bé vô cùng ấy cũng là một thế giới mang trong mình một sứ mạng khổng lồ : duy trì sự cân bằng sinh thái, sự ổn định của khí hậu trên hành tinh. Cuộc đại khủng hoảng khí hậu – môi sinh cận kề buộc nhân loại phải trở lại với cái thế giới ấy, để tìm học những bí quyết diệu kỳ, đã từng kiến tạo nên sự sống trên mặt đất từ hàng trăm triệu năm nay - các điều kiện sống đã cho phép ra đời nền văn minh của con người. Dự luật ‘‘Khôi phục Thiên nhiên'' (Nature Restoration Law) được Nghị Viện Châu Âu thông qua lần một hôm 12/07/2023, coi ‘‘các cộng đồng vi sinh vật và môi trường của chúng'' là thành tố căn bản của ‘‘hệ sinh thái''. The General Synod of the Scottish Episcopal Church met in Edinburgh last week. Francis Martin has been there to report for the Church Times. He sat down with the Primus, the Most Revd Mark Strange, Bishop of Moray, Ross & Caithness, to talk about how the meeting has gone. Bishop Strange also spoke about the part he played in the Coronation; why he enjoyed last year's Lambeth Conference; and the suspension of the Bishop of Aberdeen & Orkney, the Rt Revd Anne Dyer. The General Synod of the Scottish Episcopal Church has been meeting in Edinburgh this week — the first time it has met in person since 2019 (although it has been set up as a hybrid gathering to include members who wish to participate over video link). Francis Martin has been there to report for the Church Times. He sat down on Saturday with the Primus, the Most Revd Mark Strange, Bishop of Moray, Ross & Caithness, to talk about how the meeting has gone. Bishop Strange also spoke about how the Scottish Episcopal Church is responding to the climate crisis; the recent St Andrew's Declaration with the Church of Scotland (News, 3 December 2021); the mediation process in the diocese of Aberdeen & Orkney (News, 8 October 2021); and the forthcoming Lambeth Conference.
