When there is work to do, ground to cover, progress to make, we tend to want to get moving as quickly and efficiently and significantly as possible. We are bound and determined to make it happen, whatever “it” might be. And while we might begin with good intentions, it usually doesn't take long before we run ourselves ragged. We quickly grow exhausted, and end up leading with bitterness, cynicism, anxiety, and fear. It's so easy to get ahead of ourselves. To get ahead of our souls. Could there be a more sustainable way? There is work to do. And as followers of Jesus, I'm learning the way we approach it matters. What might this look like? Listen in. This week on
This week on Sins and Virtues, Pete and Tommy tackle the tricky topic of charity. Tommy kicks things off by sharing his guilt-ridden relationship with modern charity because who would he be if he didn't? Things take a personal turn toward Charity Shame Street when money isn't enough. Also, don't get scammed. It's super important to research charities to ensure donations aren't just lining the pockets of John Cena impersonators.Pete gives a shout-out to the value of local, hands-on charity work, like serving up oatmeal at community organizations. The hosts can't help but imagine the endless requests for more oatmeal and eggs that come with such noble deeds. More eggs, please, indeed.Digging into the historical roots of charity, Pete uncovers its origins in ancient religious beliefs and obligations, from sacrificial offerings to good old-fashioned tithing. People, nobody needs you to kill a goat for good anymore. Just go on a Fun Run. ---Learn more about supporting this podcast by becoming a member. Visit our website to learn more.

In this episode of the Defender Podcast, hosts Rick Morton and Herbie Newell engage in a heartfelt discussion with Pastor Greg Matte of Houston's First Baptist Church about the church's adoption and foster care ministry. Pastor Matte shares his journey from being vocal about anti-abortion stances to actively supporting adoption as a proactive measure. He recounts the pivotal moment when his church raised substantial funds to support adoptive families, which led to the creation of a holistic ministry known as Legacy 68:5. This ministry offers comprehensive support, including counseling, therapy, and legal aid, all under one roof. Pastor Matte emphasizes the importance of taking incremental steps in faith and involving passionate church members in ministry leadership. The episode highlights the transformative impact of such ministries on both the families involved and the church community, showcasing how dedicated efforts can make significant differences in the lives of vulnerable children.GUESTGregg Matte is the senior pastor of Houston's First Baptist Church, leading the congregation since 2004. In S4Ep5 of the PRP, Adam babbles with carefree runner, aspiring gymnast and all around impulsively enthusiast 2nd grader Zella Hughes who has been preparing for the Reid School Fun Run on Friday April 19th, 2024. Olivia McMahon, former Fun Run champion, impassioned artist and Zella's big sister joins the show to offer her take on all things jingles, candy bars and of course, Taylor Swift. Buckle up for this audacious episode as chaos ensues from the onset! The gals cover a range of topics as they traverse their way through the traditional PRP script, providing some surprisingly refreshing perspective on movement as it relates to physical health. Are us old folk overthinking this whole running thing? Is it more simple than we are making it out to be? Stop asking so many questions and just go outside and play, duh! Things get vulnerable and extra cute when the sisters express their love and support for one another towards the end of the ‘sode. A good message and reminder to us all, that at the end of the day, loving and supporting one another is a whole lot easier and far less intricate than we make it out to be sometimes. Reeses vs Kit Kat, who ya got?! Did someone say SOLAR ECLIPSE?? How much money would it take to get Olive to run a marathon? What in tarnation are the mini mini olympics?! How did sissy lose her AirPods? Who the heck is Claire and why is she so darn fast? Errrr, how far into the Swiftie hole has our little Zel fallen? Chill inducing jingles! Laps in PE? Wait, what are we supposed to do with the yellow snow??! 4th grade math?! Who's got Barbie vision?? Warming up with the Macarena?! Spiders, bubbles and edgie wedgies, oh my! This and lots more chaos in this unhinged, youthful and refreshingly sincere episode of the PRP.
