Episode 224 is Garth Marenghi's Darkplace (2004) On this episode I'm joined by Em of Verbal Diorama movie podcast as we go to a Darkplace. Once Upon a Beginning Liz's first day on the job corresponds with Dagless' friend Larry Renwick staying at the hospital as a patient, which results in a portal to Hell opening beneath Dark Place.
Matt Berry has given us a gallery of hilarious characters from the buffoonish Douglas Reynholm in "The IT Crowd" to full of himself actor Steven Toast in "Toast of London" to the Staten Island vampire Laszlo Cravensworth in "What We Do In The Shadows," which has its season finale on June 10, 2020. I had the pleasure of speaking with Berry about his career including such cult classics as "Snuff Box" and "Garth Marenghi's Darkplace." Plus I get to play some of his music. WARNING: This podcast contains explicit language and adult humor... because it contains Matt Berry.
This week we're delving, for the first time, into the world of television. In 2004 Garth Marenghi's Darkplace was aired on a late night slot on channel 4. Although it received poor viewing figures, its blend of knowing homage and spoofing of low-budget 80s TV saw it gain a strong and loyal cult following. But why?
Chris is still missing, and has possibly now been abducted by red-fingered aliens. This leaves Lee and Adam little to do except sit back and shoot the shit about great horror comedy TV. A chat that lasted so long, we’ve split it into two parts. On this episode they discuss the TV version of “What We Do In The Shadows”, cult masterpiece“Garth Marenghi's Darkplace” and the truly classic “The League of Gentlemen”. We hope you enjoy, and maybe find some new ghoulish chuckles too.

In the first episode of their season devoted to "one-season wonders," Kaley and Stephanie cover the hilarious cheesy-80's-horror-spoof-cum-mockumentary, Garth Marenghi's Darkplace. Strap in for some premenstrual telekinesis, giant randy eyeball monsters, and maggots. Maggots. MAGGOTS.
This week we are ensconced in the lush, historic offices of Faber and Faber (featuring framed, insulting TS Eliot memos) to talk to the comedian, director and author Richard Ayoade! Richard is globally recognised due to his roles in iconic shows such as The IT Crowd and Garth Marenghi's Darkplace, he's directed two films (Submarine and The Double) and published three books, all on the theme of film - with his latest being a deep dive into one particular rom-com entitled Ayoade on Top. On Becoming A God In Central Florida premiered on Showtime recently, and Floridian Jeb Lund returned to the podcast to discuss its geographic and period accuracy, whether it celebrates or mocks the poor, and all the process-y parts of a pyramid scheme (fine: "multi-level marketing"). We went Around The Dial with 13 Reasons Why, Why Women Kill and Pennyworth, and then we contemplated converting primetime shows into Saturday-morning cartoons, '70s-style, in an Extra Credit from Dave Snyder. After a hilarious (if fatal to felines) Canon submission on Garth Marenghi's Darkplace, we declared Netflix a winner, ABC a loser, and Dan Cassino an evil genius as we played a Hallmark Of Quality Game Time. In this show, we trace the strange path that led Matthew Holness from the comedy world of Garth Marenghi's Darkplace to the dark horror of of his debut feature film, Possum (2018). Along the way we take a look at his short film A Gun for George, the violent world of the Reprisalizer, and the disturbing near-future found in the teleplay The Snipist.

Today on the 5: I stumbled across a hilarious British series called Garth Marenghi's Darkplace. It's a show where the source of the comedy is the setting as opposed to the characters within it.
55 Episodes! and there were those who said we'd never make 54! well phooey on them! This time, to celebrate the occasion we take a look at one of Chris's favorite shows of all time (Nowhere Man) and One of Steve's (Garth Marenghi's Darkplace). Both a bit older, how do they hold to up to a re-viewing? We also take a look back and update our old shows, which have we continued to watch, what's still on the air? what shows have we cursed to oblivion? Enjoy this 55th episode spectacular, we couldn't have made it without all of your!
It's an FMBmergency this week! Tobias and Maciej have decided to forego an Other this week and indulge in their adoration for Greatest-Most-Underrated-Actor-Ever Logan Marshall Green! Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi and William Thrasher discuss Superman Returns to finish off their look at the first batch of Superman flicks. Director Bryan Singer was so gung-ho to do a Superman movie that he jumped ship from X-Men: The Last Stand to do it. Lex Luthor (Kevin Spacey) has another scheme involving land acquisition, but Superman (Brandon Routh) has been gone from Earth for several years. Can Kal-El get his groove back? In many ways a love letter to the first Superman movie with Christopher Reeve, Superman Returns is an earnest return to form with a plot that's all set-up and little action. When the best scene involves Superman rescuing a space shuttle only an hour into the movie, you know you're in trouble. It's not for lack of trying, either. Kevin Spacey has more fun with the Lex Luthor role than Gene Hackman ever did. Bryan Singer shoots the movie with such a reverence for the character than it leeches any potential conflict right out of the story. Mat watches "The Apes of Wrath" episode of the shortlived BBC series Garth Marenghi's Darkplace. Created by Matthew Holness and Richard Ayoade, it's a surreal series that's a restrospective on a 1980s BBC horror soap opera that never existed in the first place. Cheap production values are the name of the game. Thrasher gave Scanners a rewatch and found it to have a solid Peter Weller performance. Listen to this episode while breaking a framed photograph of a former lover with another for maximum enjoyment. Cult Nostalgia is the theme of the day when Elwood and Lackey look back at two shows which embrace thier love for the cult while pushing it that bit further with fantastically weird results as they look at "Garth Marenghi's Darkplace" and the Australian underground hit "Danger 7". It's an episode packed with Nazi Dino soldiers, demonic possession, spontanious gun fights and questionable acting! If that wasn't enough we also take a look at Mumblecore, Lena Dunham, Xenial Directors and fringe 90's comedy plus much more.
Darkplace hospital is the setting of this week's showdown, with Steve bringing the nomination. This week Kyle and Matthew sit down with actor and return guest Matt Bennett to talk about the late, great musician David Bowie. Well, that was the intent of this episode, but needless to say, they go off on a lot of tangents. That's just what happens when Kyle and Matt get to chattin' about music. They start at "Black Star" and work their way backwards through Bowie's albums, discussing the artistry he left in his wake. Look out for Matt Bennett's Lou Reed/Robin Williams inspired album "Terminal Cases" out in June! Julien "Jules" Koetsch joins John Holt, and Mary Varn to discuss the next two picks from our "Cult/Fringe" theme. ___________ Segment 1: "Dark Night of the Soul" by Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse, w/David Lynch (2010 album) John (@lordjoho) brings us an album from the late Mark Linkous, AKA Sparklehorse, in collaboration with DangerMouse and featuring David Lynch. The Album had a rocky release, with a series of legal entanglements and the apparent suicide of Sparklehorse, it seemed that the project would stay unofficially released. Thankfully the album found release and you can now find it digitally on iTunes, Rdio, Spotify. As well as in hardcopy. _________________ Segment 2: "Garth Marenghi's Darkplace" (2004 television show) Keith Vincent (earthlingkeith.com) wasn't able to join us for the record, but he did offer us a great pick for the "Cult/Fringe" theme. This British comedy series from 2004 is a fake bad 80's tv show by a fake bad horror novelist, with fake commentary from the fake novelist and the fake producer. Left to Right- Matt Berry, Richard Ayoade, Matt Holness, Alice Lowe. Currently the DVD isn't for sale in a US Region. It aired briefly on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim. You can purchase a Region 2 version online, but you can't play that in most DVD players. ______________________ You can follow us on twitter @newtoyoushow and you can leave comments down below! We kick off Feedback Friday with lots of great movie talk, including "Red Tails," a solid rebuttal of Jen's critique of "The Little Mermaid," and "Leon the Professional." Then we move on to some great book recommendations (including a solid endorsement of Chris Van Allsburg's work), and finally a few TV thoughts, from "Manor House" to "Garth Marenghi's Darkplace."
Waffle On About Garth Marenghi's Darkplace Written and Starring Mathew Holness and Richard Ayoade this brilliant comedy series first hit the screens back in 2004. A homage to early (and cheap) 1980's style action programmes Darkplace is set in a hospital over the very gates of hell in Romford. Holness plays the main character Garth Marenghi the horror writer who in turn plays Dr Rick Dagless in, Ayoade plays Dean Learner as Garths agent who in turn plays Thornton Reed, Matt Berry plays Todd Rivers who then plays Dr Lucien sanchez and Alice Lowe plays Madeline Wool who then plays Dr Liz Asher. Darkplace is a brilliant, quirky programme that benefits from visual gags, mad syncing, out of scene music cues and seriously bad Foley work all done deliberatlye. Its ounds weird and indeed it is but we hope listening to this podcast while make you go and seek it out and enjoy the dark world of Garth Marenghi and his Darkplace. As is our norm now we have put a special surprise at the end of the episode. So please do listen to the promo's and then enjoy the song taken from Darkplace called 'One Track Lover' performed by Matt Berry as his character in the show 'Todd Rivers'
Waffle On About Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels Welcome to this months episode of Waffle On. This month we talk about the brilliant 1998 gangster comedy Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. this film launched the directorial career of Guy Ritchie and launched the acting career of Jason Statham. The film has a plethora of British talent including Jason Flemyng, Nick Moran, Dexter Fletcher and Vinnie Jones. It has a brilliant script and we add in some samples from the film for your 9and of course our) enjoyment. WARNING THIS EDITION HAS SWEAR WORDS IN IT. Yes alas we have to put this warning out because the samples from the film do contain swear words so expect the odd f-bomb and other colourful words. I don't agree with censoring films or anything really so i wont be bleeping anything out. You have been warned. BONUS We like to treat you wonderful listeners so keep on listening through the promos and you get a full song from the soundtrack of Lock Stock. We play you Truly Madly Deeply by Skanga a song that was not featured on the USA version of the soundtrack. Next month is of course Halloween so we will be doing a special Halloween show in the shape of Waffle On about Garth Marenghi's Darkplace. Comments welcome as usual to waffleonpodcast@gmail.com Also if you fancy a bit more of Meds's work head over to http://themartiansarehere.com and check out the brilliant on going story by Stefan Sawynok.
