ORIGINALLY RELEASED Apr 3, 2023 Professor Matt McManus returns to Rev Left to discuss his latest book, Nietzsche and the Politics of Reaction: Essays on Liberalism, Socialism, and Aristocratic Radicalism—a provocative collection he edited featuring diverse perspectives on one of the most misunderstood thinkers in modern philosophy. We unpack Friedrich Nietzsche's actual political views, challenge the liberal and fascist misreadings, and explore what the socialist left can critically learn from him. From his attacks on Christianity and herd morality to his complex relationship with nihilism, the death of God, and radical subjectivity—we dive deep into Nietzsche's legacy and wrestle with how the left can engage him without falling into reactionary traps. A rigorous and fascinating conversation for those who want to sharpen their understanding of western philosophy and break free from lazy and shallow interpretations. ORIGINALLY RELEASED Apr 4, 2020 In this solo episode, Breht breaks down Karl Marx's powerful concept of alienation from his Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts of 1844. He walks listeners through the four types of alienation Marx identified—alienation from the product, the labor process, our human essence, and from each other—and bring them crashing into the present with real, relatable examples from contemporary working-class life. From soul-crushing jobs to the feeling of life slipping through your fingers, we connect Marx's 19th-century analysis to the 21st-century reality of exploitation and isolation under capitalism. In the process, Breht demonstrates how alienation is rooted in private property and capitalist social relations and explicates Marx's concept of species-being: our natural human capacity for conscious, creative, purposeful activity—which is reduced to a mere means of survival under capitalism, rather than a free expression of our humanity. This is Marxism made urgent, raw, relatable, and personal. Also: Happy International Worker's Day! This is the third in a series of four X/Twitter spaces where I discuss the rise of the Modern university and its relationship to Biblical interpretation. Here I discuss its origin in biblical interpretation, language leading to “hermeneutics," which then leads to “culture,” ultimately undercutting itself in everything encompassed in the word “worldview — all oriented around the greatest professors of history and philosophy who were attempting to define the purpose of the university. At issue is the history, philosophy, and legacy of what created and sustained the most influential achievement of education in human history: the Modern research university by way of the rise of “history” and “philology” and their influences on “culture.” Entailed in this includes, among other things, a meticulous articulation of what— philosophically —is specifically meant by our conceptual phrase “the Modern Enlightenment.”Further, the combination of this recording along with my previous recordings of (1) "Hermeneutics and Philology," (2) "Intro to Hegel," and the subsequent recording entitled "Reason, Science, Truth, and the Bible" complete the introductory examples of an entire series I will be releasing soon for subscribing customers entitled "The Reception of German Philosophy in America." In that series, I go into much more extensive depth on all the thinkers and texts mentioned, as well as many more, for my subscribers.Support the show
This is the recording of an X/Twitter space in which I introduce "hermeneutics" and "philology" from the perspective of the rise of Modern Biblical interpretation, and in particular the historical and literary approach from the Protestant Reformation into the 20th Century. This discussion is a kind of introduction to the subsequent introduction that I provide of (1) Hegel, (2) "From Luther to Heidegger," and (3) "Reason, Science, Truth, and the Bible." This is the second in a series of four X/Twitter spaces on the rise of the Modern university and its relationship to Biblical interpretation. Here I introduce Hegel's thought by way of his system instead of the more traditional approach of focusing upon his Phenomenology of Spirit. In this discussion I introduce all the basic fundamentals of Hegel's understanding of philosophy with emphasis on the rational and mystic interpretations of his teaching on logic and temporality. I also discuss:(1) Hegel in Catholicism(2) Hegel in America(3) Hegel on KantDue to the current crises in education, I believe this topic is important enough to make all four spaces in the series free, the others being: (1) Hermeneutics and Philology," (3) "From Luther to Heidegger," and (4) "Reason, Science, Truth, and the Bible." This is the fourth in a series of four X/Twitter spaces in which I discuss the rise of the Modern university and its relationship to Biblical interpretation. Here I introduce the premises of Modern science, the transformation of “reason” in Modernity, the consequent transformation of “truth,” and how all of it relates to the interpretation of the Bible and Christian “apologetics.”Emphasis is placed upon:(1) Plato(2) Aristotle(3) Augustine(4) Thomas and Bonaventure (5) Descartes(6) KantDue to the current crises in education, I believe this topic is important enough to make all four spaces in the series free, the others being: (1) Hermeneutics and Philology," (2) "Intro to Hegel," and (3) "From Luther to Heidegger." Listening can teach us to appreciate our environment in a critical sense, but also in a kind of admiration for it. If we admire something because we think it has a depth or it has a beauty or some interesting aspects, we want to keep it, we want to foster it.I first met Sabine at the Tuning of the World Conference in Banff, Alberta in 1993.Sabine's work focuses on media art, listening culture, cultures of perception, experimental audiomedia, media history, media ecology, acoustic ecology as well trans- and intercultural studies. She has worked as an experimental audio media maker, working as director, author, curator and dramaturg for the cultural departments of the German public radio and was co-founder of the Master‘s program Sound Studies at the University of the Arts in Berlin and worked there as a professor for Experimental Audiomedia from 2004-2008.Since 2006 Sabine teaches and researches as a professor for Sound and Media Culture at the Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences in Germany where she is director of the Soundscape & Environmental Media Lab and 3D Audio Lab.As a scientific and artistic director she has curated numerous art projects, symposia and festivals. I was a guest speaker at one of these events in 2018, The Global Composition in Dieburg, Germany where I spoke about the origins of the World Forum for Acoustic Ecology in 1993.While on a trip to Canada in May 2024 Sabine stopped by my home in Ottawa to talk about her work and share her thoughts on art and the ecological crisis with a focus on listening and sound. I was struck by Sabine's observation about how artists are always careful with what they do, which Sabine defines as :a consciously shaped relationship with the world in a mindful attitude and with high appreciation for the phenomena of this world and its values.I was impressed by the parallel she draws between the poly-crisis of today and Frederich Schiller's On the Aesthetic Education of Man, written in 1795, which addresses the dehumanization and alienation of industrial labour through aesthetic education and the arts.I was also interested in this quote because my father's relatives emigrated from Germany to North America right around that period in the early 1800's. At the end of our conversation Sabine gave me a copy of the 2nd edition of Die Ordnung der Klänge (The Ordering of Sounds), her German translation of R. Murray Schafer's The Tuning of the World.Sabine suggested books were:On the Aesthetic Education of Man by Frederich SchillerAesthetics of Care: Practice in Everyday Life by Yuriko Saito *END NOTES FOR ALL EPISODESHere is a link for more information on season 5. In the early part of the twentieth century, three thinkers – Nishida Kitarō, Tanabe Hajime, and Nishitani Keiji – founded the Kyoto School of Philosophy, a group of scholars working at the intersection of Japanese and European thought. The Kyoto School, deeply influenced by the German tradition, wrote extensively on the works of Kant, Hegel, and Heidegger exploring themes such as the limits of our reason and the nature of nothingness. Tanabe, himself a student of Heidegger, explored such topics at length, building on the rich body of thought and – as we shall see – igniting his own philosophy. In this episode, we'll be investigating the profound insights of Tanabe's philosophy with two of the world's leading Tanabe scholars: Associate Professor of Philosophy at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Gregory S. Moss and Lecturer in Non-Western Philosophy at the University of Edinburgh, Takeshi Morisato. As we explore Tanabe's work, we'll see Japan's, Kyoto School's, and Tanabe's histories, unique philosophical paths, and the many questions they illuminate along the way. As we do so, we'll uncover the invaluable insights of their work and the legacy they left behind. Contents Part I. The Kyoto School Part II. Further Analysis and Discussion Links Gregory S. Over time, this deepens the contradictions of capitalism. This concept is related to the M→C→M mode of circulation, discussed in Annotation 14, and is discussed in detail in Part 3 of the book this text is drawn from (Political Economy) which we hope to translate in the future.

Aaron J. French is a post-doctoral researcher in Religious Studies at the University of Erfurt in Germany. His main research focuses on the History of Esotericism, the History and Philosophy of Science, Sacred Space and Architecture, modern German Philosophy, and Science and Technology Studies. In this episode, we discuss the work of Rudolf Steiner in relation to technology, the apocalypse, transhumanism, and more... Aaron wanted me to add that in the discussion about the so-called incarnation of Ahriman that he touches on in the interview, there is a bit of a conflation with the appearance of another being Steiner talks about, Sorath or the anti-Christ. It is not entirely clear in what remains of Steiner's work which demon is supposed to appear in 1998 (3 x 666) and which one in 2664 (4 x 666); rather, these two dates, and these two demonic beings, are somewhat conflated at this point in the anthroposophical literature. But nevertheless, there is a strong connection between these two dates and these two demons, especially in relation to the preparation of the earth in order that it will be able to receive them. --- Become part of the Hermitix community: Hermitix Twitter - https://twitter.com/Hermitixpodcast Support Hermitix: Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/hermitix Donations: - https://www.paypal.me/hermitixpod Hermitix Merchandise - http://teespring.com/stores/hermitix-2 Bitcoin Donation Address: 3LAGEKBXEuE2pgc4oubExGTWtrKPuXDDLK Ethereum Donation Address: 0x31e2a4a31B8563B8d238eC086daE9B75a00D9E74

This recap was supported with the help of Petar the slav, many thanks for the boostagrams!Well I tried my best to understand what the Germans think about life but it wasn't too successful. I found the writing of Nietzsche and Heidegger to be quite obscure and didn't really learn anything from them. I did have fun diving into the Dune world though, just in time to see the upcoming movie. Juan enjoyed reading (as much as one can) about the story of The Tattooist Of Auschwitz and I reveal some of the upcoming books that will appear in December.I hope you have a fantastic day wherever you are in the world. I don't use the word often, but 'polemical' describes this work perfectly.'Beyond Good And Evil' by Friedrich Nietzsche is mostly an attack on philosophers but also contains snippets of his general thoughts on the interplay between religion & society, the mindset of a free spirit and some other assorted rants. It was originally written in his native German and is mostly comprised of statements (rather than logical arguments) of his opinions on all these topics.I summarised the book as follows. "It's an angry book written in an angry way by an angry guy. I struggled to understand a lot but there were hints that it could become clearer with more reading of his other philosophical works. I'm not really convinced by anything he said as he provided no basis for his statements, they were all personal assertions. I might come back and try again one day but this attempt was of little value."I hope you have a fantastic day wherever you are in the world. More questions than answers, more confusion than clarity.'The Question Concerning Technology' by Martin Heidegger is a philosophical book containing multiple essays by the German philosopher. It centres around his concepts of 'Standing Reserve' & 'Enframing' but also contains a deconstruction of Nietzsche as well. The book contains no real structure but does have many helpful notes from the translator (as it was originally written in German).I summarised the book as follows. "I have no idea what this book was about. Major props and kudos to anyone who can understand it. I gave it a low rating not because I disagreed or disliked the thesis, simply because I didn't understand it. One of those books where I'm not at all encouraged to even attempt to read any of the author's other works."I hope you have a fantastic day wherever you are in the world. We conclude (for now) our readings of Poe and Emerson by taking a look at how they conceived of American literary nationalism. John goes deep into Emerson's influences, while Emmet brings in some historical background. Errata: Where Emmet says "John Henry" he meant to say "John Brown." Heralded as the father of Reform Judaism by some, derided as a destroyer of traditional Jewish life by others and forgotten by most, Moses Mendelssohn's legacy continues to intrigue Jewish minds across the spectrum. He entered the gates of Berlin as a young 14 year old, and ultimately embraced the ideals of the enlightenment and German Philosophy. Through his teaching and prodigious literary output, an attempt was made to synthesize traditional Jewish observance while incorporating elements of the surrounding culture. The question remains as to what is his "true" legacy, but his influence remains in the Jewish world till today. Dr Mark Fielding on Do Philosophy and Politics mix? Philosophy tries to picture the world as it is in general terms, but politics focusses on the way the world should be. Martin Heidegger provides an example through which to consider the difficulties which emerge when Philosophy and Politics come together. To what extent can and should Philosophy inform politics? And should we take seriously the idea that Politics can change the nature of Philosophy? Dr Mark Fielding has taught at UCL, Birkbeck College, The Open University, and The University of Greenwich. He holds degrees from the University of Manchester and UCL. His principal interests are in the areas of Philosophy and Film, contemporary political thought, 20th Century French and German Philosophy, and Philosophy and Biology. He has recently been working on books on Philosophy and Horror and the nature of political utopias in the contemporary world. Recorded on Sun 1 Jun 2014

Christian Damböck (Vienna) gives a talk at the MCMP workshop "Influences on the Aufbau" (1-3 July, 2013) titled "The Notion of Objectivity in 19th Century German Philosophy and its Role for the Aufbau". Abstract: This paper compares Carnap’s empiricist and objectivist conception from the Aufbau with a certain family of accounts of the empirical and objectivity that had been emerged in 19th Century Ger- many. Although these accounts were marginalized at the beginning of the 20th Century there were traces of this German empiricist (and objectivist) tradition to be found both in the philosophy of the Dilthey- school and in neo-Kantianism. Therefore, we try to argue first that Dilthey and the neo-Kantians (or at least some of them) have been sympathetic to a certain kind of empiricist and objectivist reasoning, and second that Carnap’s own empiricist and objectivist conception most probably has been influenced by these German empiricists (and objectivists).
