This week, Dr. Matthew Shadle joins the podcast to discuss the theology of Pope Francis in the context of Vatican II. Specifically—responding to some of the critics Pope Francis's recent apostolic letter, Ad Theologiam Promovendam—we talk about how the pope's theology fits in terms of the Ressourcement theology that dominated at the Second Vatican Council and its development since then.  After more than sixteen years of teaching theology at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa and Marymount University in Arlington, Virginia, Dr. Matthew Shadle is the Academic Assessment Coordinator for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Iowa. He received his B.A. in Religion from Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas, and his M.A. and Ph.D. in Theology from the University of Dayton, in Dayton, Ohio.  He has published Interrupting Capitalism: Catholic Social Thought and the Economy (Oxford, 2018) and The Origins of War: A Catholic Perspective (Georgetown, 2011), as well as numerous essays and articles on Catholic social teaching and its intersection with both fundamental moral theology and the social sciences, with special focus on war and peace, the economy, and immigration. In this episode, we look at the theological current preceding the Council, the different core blocs in the proceedings, and what the Council actually decided. We realize that Vatican II really mandated very little, but left much up to interpretation, which has led to widespread confusion and a crisis in the Church since then.

One Heart One City 3 NIGHT REVIVAL [Part 1] FEATURING Todd Thomas, Jon Kynard, Greg & Steph Schlueter, Heather & Pastor Beaufils, & Randy Lindhurst GO: http://OneHeartOneCity.us It doesn’t take any special revelation to recognize that our world is literally being torn asunder. The institutions we use to regard as monolithic seem to now be hanging by a thread. But let us pronounce: If we are anchored in Jesus Christ when all is well, it will not matter if and when all is not. Right now is a critical moment in human history. God wants to foster radical reliance upon Him. He wants us to foster interdependence with one another. A holy community. Accordingly, as you’ve witnessed innumerable people taking to the streets in violence, one question remains: Is what moves them… greater than what we profess moves us? If we profess to be disciples of Jesus Christ, we can no longer remain behind our comfortable walls, limiting the of His Holy Spirit to our comfort zones. Jesus is summoning us to surrender. Everything. People are now hungrier than ever for His Kingdom to come and His will be done. God is doing His part. The bright light shines on you and me. Please don’t dismiss this. We ask you to please take a moment and check out the website, OneHeartOneCity.us. We are missioned friends throughout this region, across denominations, who have encountered the love of God in Jesus Christ, and can’t help but want to see His healing, transforming, saving love overflow into this world. What you’re going to hear in the next hour are some powerful testimonials from a recent, 3 night event that took place at Swan Creek Park in Toledo, Ohio. We hope it is the first of many in an effort to be instruments of Holy revival in this region. Before getting to the program, a word of deep gratitude for some godly businesses who have partnered with us. Please support them. Today I want to ask a question. Do dead theologians matter today? We hear about being the church of now and being cutting edge, and a lot of stuff today that frankly, overtime makes me wonder, should we listen to our ancestors? I love this quote from G.K. Chesterton. “Tradition means giving votes to the most obscure of all classes, our ancestors. It is a democracy of the dead. Tradition refuses to submit to the small and arrogant oligarchy of those who nearly happen to be walking about.” Today we’re going to explore why dead theologians matter. We’re going to do a deep dive into one of my favorites, Maximus the Confessor. And I could think of no one better to talk about than my good friend Steve Overman from Eugene Faith Center.  Here are Steve's articles for download: Materiality, Beauty, and Space: The Eastern Traditions as a Ressourcement for Pentecostal Worship and the Arts Blood Cries Out: Pentecostals, Ecology, and the Groans of Creation Here are the links to previous posts on my blog referenced in today's Episodes: Marriage: God's House of Ambush Episode 099: The Community of God with Doug Bursch Here are the links to books to dive deeper into Maximus the Confessor: Maximus Confessor by George Berthold Maximus Confessor by Andrew Louth If you’re enjoying this podcast, spread the word by sharing it with your friends and leaving a review on Apple Podcasts.

The Second Vatican Council was the largest council of the Church, beginning under John XXIII in October 1962 and running for four sessions until 1965, ending on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception under Paul VI. It reaffirmed and proclaimed the timeless teaching of the Church, though it did not define much new doctrine, the pastoral thrust was very important. We must follow the instruction of all ecumenical councils, even a council that does not define doctrine. The interpretation of this council can be seen through the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which has many references to council documents. Two foreign words dominated the council, Aggiornamento ("bringing up to date") and Ressourcement ("going back to the sources").  Both complement each other, as without returning to the sources, we cannot be sure what we are bringing up to date, and without bringing the teaching on those sources up to date, we may be stuck in a 16th-century mindset.  Various factions vied for more and less of each at the council, but the reforming element prevailed. Some of the major theologians who influenced the council were Karl Rahner, Yves Congar, Edward Schillebeeckx, Hans Küng as well as Karol Wojtyła (later John Paul II). Many of these major reformers formed the board of the journal Concilium, but in 1974, Henri de Lubac, Hans Urs von Balthasar, and Joseph Ratzinger (later Benedict XVI), concerned by some of Concilium's editors' desire for more reforms after Vatican II and not through the Church, formed a rival journal, Communio. This conflict between those who wanted more reform outside the Churchand those who wanted to come to consensus on the council first wouldcontinue for many years.
