We look at The CEO: The Rise and Fall of Britain's Captains of Industry, coming out in June 2025. See mor about the book here. The CEO: The Rise and Fall of Britain's Captains of Industry reviewed In many ways this book is a bit of a horror show in terms of management for British industries. The authors do a good job of taking us through a variety of types of leader. This is informative and well written, however the constant theme seems to be, regardless of their origin or training, they generally still ended up making either a real mess of it all, or at least not performing optimally. Sadly, as the authors also clearly point out, the only constant is the increasingly dizzy rise of the renumeration packages for this motley crew of incompetents. The approach seems to get ever shorter and shorter in terms of time frames and KPIs to aim for. To compensate for their likely impending dismissal, the renumeration packages are ever more ludicrous and higher and higher multiples of the average working person's salary. This book is well written and researched, but it also became ever more depressing as you were reminded of the growing rogues gallery of poorly performing, but increasingly well paid CEOs that have had to be endured in many British companies. It is a challenging time when competence, ability or ethical integrity seem to be less and less in demand for leading companies or even countries. Here's hoping that this book helps to at least raise the level of debate even while we have to endure as series of self serving leaders. More about the authors Michael Aldous is a business historian and Senior Lecturer at Queen's Business School, Queen's University Belfast. He is a founder and co-director of the Long Run Institute (LRI), which uses historical analysis to help senior executives and policy makers make better decisions. John D. Turner is Professor of Finance and Financial History, Queen's Business School, Queen's University Belfast, and a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences. His previous Cambridge University Press book Boom and Bust: A Global History of Financial Bubbles (2021) was named an Economics Book of the Year by the Financial Times. More about The CEO After analysing 1500 CEOs, what does a good one look like? High cognitive ability; strong organisational and interpersonal skills; clear values and personal purpose; has judgement from career and life experience (so aged 50 or over) History reveals why CEOs are fat cats this study of Britain's corporate history reveals that corporate fat cats emerged because of the emasculation of private sector trade unions and changing social norms about pay inequality. We need CEOs need to move slow and build things (not move fast and break things) By the 1970s, CEOs began getting sacked in ever greater numbers. By this century, over 40% of CEOs were dismissed either for poor performance or because their companies were taken over; tenures fell too from an average of 10 years to under six. The trend of CEOs spending much less time in the role can be traced back to deregulation and privatization policies (of Thatcher era) but also to the financialization of companies and the wider economy. So, how can CEOs make meaningful change? Who makes it to the top? Differing pathways influenced how CEOs historically operated and are perceived. They have been (in historical order): Aristocratic amateurs; Families and founders; Managers; Technocrats It was not until 1997 that Marjorie Scardino became the first woman and also the first mother to become CEO of a FTSE 100 company. Across the century, women have worked to overturn deeply embedded social and cultural stereotypes. Back at the beginning of the twentieth century, even though women made up nearly half of the shareholders in some companies, shareholder voting registers simply de-platformed them from the list of those shareholders who held the qualifying number of shares to almost automatically stand as a director. Being a director was,...

ORIGINALLY RELEASED Apr 3, 2023 Professor Matt McManus returns to Rev Left to discuss his latest book, Nietzsche and the Politics of Reaction: Essays on Liberalism, Socialism, and Aristocratic Radicalism—a provocative collection he edited featuring diverse perspectives on one of the most misunderstood thinkers in modern philosophy. We unpack Friedrich Nietzsche's actual political views, challenge the liberal and fascist misreadings, and explore what the socialist left can critically learn from him. From his attacks on Christianity and herd morality to his complex relationship with nihilism, the death of God, and radical subjectivity—we dive deep into Nietzsche's legacy and wrestle with how the left can engage him without falling into reactionary traps. A rigorous and fascinating conversation for those who want to sharpen their understanding of western philosophy and break free from lazy and shallow interpretations.   Check out more of McManus' work HERE ---------------------------------------------------- Support Rev Left and get access to bonus episodes: www.patreon.com/revleftradio Make a one-time donation to Rev Left at BuyMeACoffee.com/revleftradio Follow, Subscribe, & Learn more about Rev Left Radio HERE Outro Beat Prod. by flip da hood

Continuous management preserves quality and boosts property values, unlike areas without dominant landowners.Build to Rent (BTR) Sector Adapts to Modern Renters' Needs: The BTR sector is becoming increasingly popular by offering flexible leases, high-quality amenities, and community-focused spaces that cater to modern lifestyles. Developments are often in prime locations and provide move-in-ready homes, making them a convenient and appealing choice for renters seeking flexibility and a sense of belonging.Non-Dom Tax Crackdown Affects Wealthy Homeowners: Wealthy individuals are selling prime properties and relocating abroad in anticipation of the UK's upcoming non-dom tax changes. This shift is impacting the high-end London property market, with notable sales like David Sullivan's £65 million Marylebone mansion highlighting the trend.Nationwide Eases Mortgage Rules to Aid Homebuyers: Nationwide Building Society has increased the salary multiplier for mortgages, allowing homebuyers to borrow up to six times their salary, which helps first-time buyers enter the market. The society also reduced mortgage rates, providing further assistance to those struggling with high house prices and the cost of living crisis.UK Property Market Faces Key Legislative Changes: New regulations, including the Renters' Rights Bill and potential increases in the Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) surcharge for overseas buyers, are set to impact the UK residential property market. Free time, one of life's most important commodities, often feels unfulfilling. But why? And how did leisure activities transition from strolling in the park for hours to “doomscrolling” on social media for thirty minutes?Despite the promise of modern industrialization, many people experience both a scarcity of free time and a disappointment in it. Here to explain why this is today's guest Gary Cross, author of “Free Time: The History of an Elusive Ideal.” We discuss a broad historical explanation of why our affluent society does not afford more time away from work and why that time is often unsatisfying. We begin with a survey of the past 250 years to understand the roots of our conception of free time and its use. By the end of the nineteenth century, a common expectation was that industrial innovations would lead to a progressive reduction of work time and a subsequent rise in free time devoted to self-development and social engagement. However, despite significant changes in the early twentieth century, both goals were frustrated, thus leading to the contemporary dilemma.Cross touches on leisure of all kinds, from peasant festivals and aristocratic pleasure gardens to amusement parks, movie theaters and organized sports to internet surfing, and even the use of alcohol and drugs. This wide-ranging cultural and social history explores the industrial-era origins of our modern obsession with work and productivity, but also the historical efforts to liberate time from work and cultivate free time for culture.

The ultimate origin of this identity is in what Nietzsche calls high culture, and which might be understood literally as the cultivation of human nature, a cultivation that is by necessity of long duration, strict, and difficult; a cultivation that might also go by the name of “regime.” ... Nietzsche goes so far as to compare Schopenhauer to Napoleon, another “classical man” who appeared, as he says, as an untimely and unexpected comet or meteor, totally out of place in an age of modern men and mediocrity. ...  the connection hinted at between Schopenhauer as the revival of classical philosophy and Napoleon as the revival of the classical statesman or tyrant, gives a clue about what Nietzsche understands to be the ground or prerequisite of both high culture and philosophy. That is, one must look past the rhetoric of assertion, manliness, Napoleonic greatness, and try to tunnel into Nietzsche's statements to understand the riddle ... “the great, the uncanny problem which I have been pursuing the longest” is the problem of psychology of the “improvers” of mankind. ... Political truth means that it must have truth for the layman or for “the many,” or for the politically significant part of the regime. Politically effective truth is not the same as truth as such. Each has a sphere and dignity of its own.

the “raw material” for philosophy is furnished by the aristocratic regime in a much more direct and literal way, in that only the impressive specimens bred over generations by such a regime can become philosophers in the beginnings of philosophy, or receive philosophy at its beginnings. This point is made in a somewhat limited way, but for our purposes, most clearly, when Nietzsche discusses the incredible work that had to go into cultivating physical beauty in Athens--itself originally just the consequence of a physical culture geared toward athletics and thus at bottom toward warfare. The physical beauty that impressed thinkers and philosophers, and that in particular was the fertile ground and inspiration for Platonic philosophy, was one of the end-products of the breeding program inherent in the aristocratic regime.

a) The Aristocratic Principle as Distinct from the Primitive “Fundamental Democracy”; Historical Origins in the Greek World. The polis--what Nietzsche calls “the aristocratic commonwealth” of breeding--is unique because of how it was able to accommodate and elevate what has been in this chapter called the “aristocratic” or “pastoral” way of life within the bounds of static, settled life; it represents a compromise between a “lower” and a “higher” that are of alien origin to each other.

"This map of Shahjahanabad, what's now Old Delhi, was made in 1847. After the revolt of 1857 was suppressed by the British, large parts of the city were demolished. So much changed that this map is an invaluable look at that city as it was before the destruction of 1857" - Swapna Liddle, author, 'Shahjahanabad; Mapping a Mughal City' talks to Manjula Narayan about the exquisite administrative map of the city that's now in the British Museum and what it tells us about the old walled city, its neighbourhoods, its social life and individual citizens both aristocratic and ordinary.

Erik Hoel joins Ash Milton to discuss the current state of education, how it succeeded aristocratic tutoring, and what it means for progress. Up until the creation of mass schooling in the nineteenth century, tutelage was the most common form of education. Only aristocrats were able to afford this, and with the disappearance of aristocratic society so too has tutoring fallen out of practice. But its advantages are what enabled great works of genius to emerge over the past three hundred years. Scientists like Bertrand Russell, William James, and Ludwig Wittgenstein were all given individual instruction at a young age, which was a key part of their success. Erik and Ash discuss the history of the practice and if there is a viable future for it.    Erik Hoel is a research assistant professor at Tufts University. He recently published his debut novel, and his other writing can be found at his Substack.

https://astralcodexten.substack.com/p/contra-hoel-on-aristocratic-tutoring I. Erik Hoel has an interesting new essay, Why We Stopped Making Einsteins. It argues that an apparent decline in great minds is caused by the replacement of aristocratic tutoring by ordinary education. Hoel worries we're running out of geniuses: Consider how rare true world-historic geniuses are now-a-days, and how different it was in the past. In “Where Have All the Great Books Gone?” Tanner Greer uses Oswald Spengler, the original chronicler of the decline of genius back in 1914, to point out our current genius downturn […] There are a bunch of other analyses (really, laments) of a similar nature I could name, from Nature's “Scientific genius is extinct” to The New Statesman's “The fall of the intellectual” to The Chronicle of Higher Education's “Where have all the geniuses gone?” to Wired's” “The Difficulty of Discovery (Where Have All The Geniuses Gone?)” to philosopher Eric Schwitzgebel's “Where are all the Fodors?” to my own lamentation on the lack of leading fiction writers. If you disagree, I'll certainly admit that finding irrefutable evidence for a decline of genius is difficult—intellectual contributions are extremely hard to quantify, the definition of genius is always up for debate, and any discussion will necessarily elide all sorts of points and counterpoints. But the numbers, at least at first glance, seem to support the anecdotal. Here's a chart from Cold Takes' “Where's Today's Beethoven?” Below, we can see the number of acclaimed scientists (in blue) and artists (in red), divided by the effective population (total human population with the education and access to contribute to these fields).
