Everyday, millions of kids go online for video games, hook up sites, chatrooms etc. For young people the online world represents a type of socialization and connection to their friends and often people they have never met. This is the first generation of kids that will live in a world that connects 6 billion people. All the while apps and platforms feed us new information about politics, criminal acts, social movements, videos of dogs, cats and weird people and announce headlines that just seem hard to believe. Honestly, few people who use the world wide web have any understanding of how it is made, how it works and who you are sharing this service with. Several years ago, the FBI stated that they believed that there were more than 500,000 predators online at any given time. With global 5G high speed connection implemented in 2022-2023, billions of people came online including cartels and organized criminal operations around the globe. At the same time, our world experienced a technology transformation unlike anything seen in history. Over the past few months many sophisticated technical capabilities were added including: geo-location software, money transfer, mass audience live streaming and artificial intelligence. Certainly these technologies makes our lives easier, but at the same time, additional technical capabilities enhance the predators opportunity to access, groom, recruit and exploit our kids. It is time to educate ourselves and have informed, constructive conversations with our kids about how the internet works, who is online with you and the technologies they use to gain your trust. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/million-kids/support

Gemma Archer shares insights from her latest book: Teaching English Pronunciation for a Global World co-authored with Robin Walker. In this episode, Gemma talks about prioritising intelligibility over native-likeness in language learning, setting realistic learning goals, as well as shares techniques we can use to develop learners' pronunciation.Click here to watch this episode with closed captions.KEY TALKING POINTSPrioritising IntelligibilityGemma stresses the importance of focusing on students' intelligibility rather than aiming for native-like pronunciation, ensuring they can be understood in international contexts.Needs Analysis and Student GoalsTeachers can conduct a needs analysis by observing students' speech or collecting speech samples to identify specific pronunciation issues. Understanding students' goals and requirements is crucial.Challenging Prestige ModelsThe dominance of marketed native-speaker accents, particularly from Southeast England and general American English, in teaching materials, media, and marketing shapes students' perceptions. Teachers should address and challenge these notions, emphasising the value of diverse English accents.Techniques for Teaching PronunciationSimple, low-preparation techniques are recommended. Visual aids, gestures, and using students' language examples are effective. Emphasising sound differences and durations, such as using elastic bands to show vowel length, helps students grasp pronunciation better.ABOUTGemma is an EAP teacher and programme co-ordinator in the ELT unit at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland. She is also a pronunciation specialist, teacher trainer, and is joint-coordinator of IATEFL Pronunciation special interest group (PronSIG) and former editor of the SIG's biannual journal Speak Out! (2017-2023). She is co-author of Teaching English Pronunciation for a Global World (OUP, 2024) and her research interests lie in the field of pronunciation pedagogy and accent, and the issues which can arise when students and teachers of English are confronted with diverse regional and global varieties of English.

Chapter 1 What's Vermeer's Hat Book by Timothy Brook"Vermeer's Hat: The Seventeenth Century and the Dawn of the Global World" is a book written by Timothy Brook. It was first published in 2008. The book explores the global connections and influences on the world during the 17th century through the examination of various objects depicted in the paintings of the Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer. The objects, such as a hat, a porcelain bowl, a map, and a silver coin, serve as a starting point to delve into the interconnectedness of cultures and economies in this era of expanding trade and colonialism. The book provides insights into how these objects reveal the global networks and flows of goods, ideas, and people during the 17th century.Chapter 2 Is Vermeer's Hat Book A Good BookThe book "Vermeer's Hat: The Seventeenth Century and the Dawn of the Global World" by Timothy Brook is generally well-received and considered a good book. It offers a unique perspective on the 17th century and the impact of globalization through the analysis of five objects depicted in paintings by the Dutch artist Vermeer. The book combines art history, global history, and cultural analysis to provide insights into the connections between different parts of the world during this period. Many readers appreciate the interdisciplinary approach and find the book informative, engaging, and thought-provoking. However, personal reading preferences may vary, so it is recommended to read reviews or sample the book before making a final judgment.Chapter 3 Vermeer's Hat Book by Timothy Brook Summary"Vermeer's Hat: The Seventeenth Century and the Dawn of the Global World" is a book by Timothy Brook that explores the global connections and cultural exchanges that took place during the 17th century, as seen through the artworks of Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer. The book focuses on a series of paintings by Vermeer and uses them as a starting point to examine the interconnectedness of the world during this period. The title of the book refers to one of Vermeer's most famous paintings, "Girl with a Pearl Earring," in which the subject is wearing a turban coiled with a blue and white drape. This hat, according to the author, symbolizes the global trade and cultural exchange that was taking place during Vermeer's time.Throughout the book, Brook takes readers on a journey across the globe, exploring the different regions and cultures that were involved in these global exchanges. From the ports of China to the mines of Bolivia, the author uncovers the complex network of trade routes that spanned the continents during the 17th century.Brook also delves into the ways in which these global connections influenced art, science, and trade. He discusses how the commodities, such as spices, textiles, and ceramics, that were exchanged during this period had a significant impact on the material culture of the time. Moreover, he explores how the exchange of ideas and knowledge across borders shaped the way people thought about the world.Through his analysis of Vermeer's paintings, Brook showcases how the global connections of the 17th century can be traced back to even the smallest details of everyday life. For example, he examines the presence of Chinese porcelain in Vermeer's paintings as a representation of the East Indies trade and European fascination with exotic goods.Overall, "Vermeer's Hat" provides a captivating exploration of the global connections and cultural exchanges that shaped the 17th century. Through Vermeer's artworks, the book illuminates the interconnectedness of the world during this period and highlights the lasting impact of these exchanges on art, trade, and society. Chapter 4 Vermeer's Hat Book...
Ming China in 1642 had suffered a series of disasters. Floods, and then drought had destroyed successive rice crops, sending the price of grain to astronomical levels. As one schoolteacher wrote: “There was no rice in the market to buy. Even if a dealer had grain, people passed by without asking the price. The rich were reduced to scrounging for beans or wheat, the poor for chaff or rotting garbage. Being able to buy a few pecks of chaff or bark was ecstasy.” The Ming Dynasty collapsed two years later. Timothy Brook, in his latest book The Price of Collapse: The Little Ice Age and the Fall of Ming China (Princeton University Press: 2023), points to environmental disaster as the spark that helped cause the Ming Dynasty's fall, relying on a history of surging prices to show how the over-275 year dynasty eventually fell to the Qing. In this interview, Timothy and I talk about inflation in Ming China, how it connects to climate change, and how short-term environmental shocks can cause a market to break down. Timothy Brook is professor emeritus of history at the University of British Columbia and a fellow of the British Academy. His many books include Great State: China and the World (Harper: 2020), Mr. Selden's Map of China: Decoding the Secrets of a Vanished Cartographer (Bloomsbury Press: 2013), and Vermeer's Hat: The Seventeenth Century and the Dawn of the Global World (Bloomsbury Publishing: 2009). Rana Foroohar, associate editor at the FT and one of the world's leading economic commentators, argues that path to prosperity, sustainability and equity lies in a local, place-based economics fit for the 21st century. The journalist Joseph Stiglitz has acclaimed for being 'consistently right about globalisation', argues that with the pandemic exposing the vulnerability of global trade and supply chains; tensions building between the China and the west; and Russia's invasion of Ukraine, we are beginning to see the first signs of a move toward de-globalisation. The risks of our interdependency are becoming ever clearer, and with increasing inequality, wage stagnation, and the effects of climate change, many are beginning to question the ideological hegemony that places global profit over local prosperity. Can we rescue the best of global interconnectedness and exchange whilst re-focussing on the local and regional? Financial Times columnist and CNN global economic analyst Rana Foroohar offers a deep look at the vulnerabilities of globalization. She makes the case that the reign of globalization as we've known it is over and the rise of local, regional and homegrown business is now at hand. She says that for decades, the neoliberal economic philosophy of prioritizing efficiency over resilience and profits over local prosperity has produced massive inequality, persistent economic insecurity, and distrust in our institutions. Place-based economics and a wave of technological innovations now make it possible to keep operations, investment and wealth closer to home, wherever that may be. With the pendulum of history swinging back, Foroohar explores both the challenges and the possibilities of this new era, and how she says it can usher in a more equitable and prosperous future. For much of the past fifty years, American political leaders of both parties have assumed that globalization and free trade would lead to more opportunity, higher living standards and increased business efficiency. But our guest, author and Financial Times columnist, Rana Foroohar, argues that with supply chain disruptions and growing economic insecurity in much of the world, the long reign of globalization is coming to end. A shift to more resilient and local businesses is now at hand. We discuss the reporting and findings in the brand new book, "Homecoming: The Path to Prosperity in a Post-Global World.""I think the pendulum of the old way is tapped out," Rana tells us. "Cheap money is over. Cheap labor from China is largely over. Cheap energy from Russia is definitely over."The war in Ukraine and the political and economic chaos that followed have brought the fragility of the global economic and political system into sharp relief. We discuss the argument that our economy is far too financialized and that this is leading to greater mistrust, vast inequality and more populist autocrats. As we do in all of our shows, we hear potential solutions. Rana argues that place-based economics and a wave of technological innovations now make it possible to keep investment and wealth closer to home. It seems like everyday we are inundated with riveting videos of the latest smash and grab at a big retailer, or a shooting at a public event, school or mall, and or thousands of foreign nationals crossing our border illegally. Social media, video on demand, and being globally connected has changed our world completely. Graphic and immediate images from around the globe, impact how we perceive crime, how individual criminals find each other online and join a "swarm" to loot an upscale retailer. It also changes how law enforcement agencies use technology to investigate and prosecute criminals. This week's broadcast focuses on the psychological impact of being globally connected. Terrorists no longer just plant a bomb and run away. Rather, they film themselves in the act so individuals around the world are instilled with the fear and reality of the power of terrorism. Large scale smash and grab rings often begin by a posting on social media and hundreds of individuals will show up to stores like Nordstroms or Best Buy to create a "swarm" of looting. Earlier this year over 80 individuals showed up at Nordstroms to loot and devastate the store as Security Personnel had no choice but to watch. The entire event was over in under 5 minutes. The criminals were recruited online using social media. These criminal activities are far different than organized crime where criminals had personal relationships which law enforcement could build a case and prosecute. Using social media to recruit individuals to join a smash and grab operation means that the individuals will not know each others names or contact information and they are most often only together for under 20 minutes and quickly disperse. Impromptu mass criminal operations are difficult for law enforcement to investigate since most often the criminals don't know each other and have no obvious connection except for responding to a social media announcement. This week we look at the power and challenges of social media in crime and crime solving. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/million-kids/support
