Please enjoy free access to a full and uncut episode of the Unauthorized Disclosure weekly podcast typically available for only subscribers. Ben Norton, editor for Multipolarista, returns to the podcast to discuss the United States-backed coups and lawfare in Peru and Argentina. Peru President Pedro Castillo, who came from a background as an indigenous peasant, was removed from power by the right-wing legislature and arrested. A show trial was held, and he has been sentenced to 18 months of "preventative detention." In Argentina, Vice President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner was barred by the judiciary from running for president again. The political charge against her bears a lot of similarity to the political charge that was leveled by the right-wing in Brazil against President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Ben challenges several misconceptions about Castillo and the coup in Peru while also recounting events that led up to the third impeachment against him that created the conditions for his removal. He also highlights how the US ambassador to Peru was in the CIA. While providing an overview of recent events in Argentina, Ben details the extent to which oligarchs in the country hold influence over the judiciary.
In this video version of the episode, we close out the Eisenhower years. As the U.S. government plans to send its most advanced surface-to-air missile system to Ukraine. Meanwhile, the masses of people in Ukraine and the rest of Europe are falling further into poverty as conditions worsen and prices rise. Rather than promoting peace and advocating for negotiations, the United States, European Union, and NATO are publicly discussing escalating the war, while the IMF, World Bank, and corporate interests speculate on how much profit they can make in the future rebuilding of Ukraine, having moved the country decisively away from Russia and into the Western fold. A history of how the US military-industrial complex was created, with its deep links to Wall Street, following the National Security Council's top secret memo NSC 68: a blueprint for the first cold war. First cold war architect George Kennan wrote in 1987: "Were the Soviet Union to sink tomorrow under the waters of the ocean, the American military-industrial complex would have to go on, substantially unchanged, until some other adversary could be invented. “We have to understand neoliberalism as a particular phase of capitalism dominated by US imperialism. So let's start with the last point I mentioned: regime change operation. Any country around the world, any government that tries to have state oversight over the economy opposing neoliberalism was overthrown through regime change.”Ben Norton's journalism, according to his bio, focuses primarily on US foreign policy and geopolitics, but that description doesn't do him justice. If any of our listeners are under the illusion the US government serves a purpose other than making the world safe for neoliberal monopoly capitalism, this episode is for you. If you believe neoliberalism is driven by bad ideas, this episode is for you. Ben and Steve discuss Lenin's prescience in ‘Imperialism, the Highest Stage of Capitalism,' writing about the predatory nature of finance capital a full century ago. But finance capital in 1916 was a far cry from that of today: “No one in 1916 could have imagined the level of financialization of the economy, especially the US economy – and also deindustrialization. Let's not forget that deindustrialization is something quite new in the history of capitalism. This is something that really emerges with the rise of neoliberalism, especially starting in the '70s, going into the '80s forward and this neoliberal phase of globalization.” As the mainstream media is getting our minds prepped for war, we would do well to revisit some of the other ‘enemies' in our recent past. They all had one thing in common. It had nothing to do with some crazy evil dictator threatening US national security. Ben Norton is a journalist, writer, and filmmaker. His journalism focuses primarily on US foreign policy and geopolitics. He is based in Latin America and speaks English and Spanish. @BenjaminNorton and @Multipolarista on Twitter

In his 1956 book "The Power Elite," New Left sociologist C. "Everyone can see that the U.S. has been in decline for several years,” Ben Norton told Watchdog host Lowkey today, explaining that the days of a unipolar world where Washington dominates the planet are over.Ben Norton is a journalist, writer, and filmmaker. He is the founder and editor of Multipolarista, a website dedicated to presenting international and geopolitical news through the lens of multipolarity. “Obviously this is going to be a decades-long process of decline,” he said of the United States, “But we are very clearly seeing alternatives emerging.”In the past two decades, the U.S. grip on global power has been slipping, and new nations and organizations have begun to emerge that challenge American dominance. One of these is the BRICS, an economic and increasingly political bloc of emerging economies: Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Argentina, Iran and others have expressed an interest in joining this alliance, which has now laid out plans for its own bank and international currency, two moves strike at the heart of American economic hegemony.“Now that the U.S. has sanctioned one-quarter of the global population, and especially now with the economic war on Russia, BRICS has emerged as this new economic infrastructure bringing countries together that want to get around Western sanctions,” Norton said.Russia's invasion of Ukraine has spurred the U.S. and its NATO allies to attempt to force poorer nations to turn their backs on Russia, politically and economically. And they have been trying to do the same in an effort to prevent China's continued economic rise. But it has been to little avail, as even nations not known for defying orders have refused to line up behind the West. For Norton, this is because these states see the writing on the wall: that U.S. economic and political power is waning and that the 21st century will be a multipolar one. As he explained:Not only are countries around the world saying they want to continue doing business with China and Russia because they want Chinese technologies and goods and Russian commodities but they are also saying ‘look, we can do business with these countries and they don't force us to privatize all of our state assets, they don't force us to cut social spending and the minimum wage,' [like the U.S. does]...Countries are saying that ‘we have done this neoliberal model for decades and it has resulted in disaster.'”China is now the world's manufacturing powerhouse, while Russia is a huge source of vital commodities such as oil and natural gas, food and fertilizer. The U.S., by contrast, has little to offer except missiles and Netflix. Yet through coups, sanctions and other forms of economic warfare, the U.S. has been able to dictate the economic path of the world.“What the U.S. is doing is trying to prevent any alternatives to the neoliberal capitalist model,” Norton said. Washington retains a strong military edge, however. The worry is that if all it has is a hammer, it will see nails everywhere it goes.Another region challenging the U.S.-run global order is Latin America, where we have seen a resurgence of left-wing anti-imperialist movements. Many of these have come to power already. Later on this year, however, Brazil is poised to elect Lula da Silva as president. If the largest and most populous country in the region re-elects an anti-imperialist socialist as its leader (as polls predict it will), it could be a significant and permanent blow against American power in the Western hemisphere, a region President Joe Biden calls “America's front yard.”Support the show

Pat talks to journalist Ben Norton of Multipolarista about multiple countries and regions in Latin America. The interview focuses on what we miss as consumers of US media, namely the working-class opinion of Socialist regimes like Maduro in Venezuela and the Cuban government. The topic of Puerto Rico also came up and Ben explains the devastating consequences that have come from the privatization of national utilities after Hurricane Maria. As a show, we have always been dedicated to countering mainstream media narratives and this episode takes that same focus to examine Latin American countries that are often misrepresented in American media. In the open, CMoney, Dan, and Pat provide a lot of context that will help the listener understand the issues discussed in interviews. Multipolarista host Benjamin Norton and journalist Robbie Martin discuss how neoconservative US imperialists like Fox News host Tucker Carlson (a CIA applicant) and Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis cynically tried to rebrand as "right-wing populists," while pushing war on China, Iran, Cuba, Venezuela, and Palestine. These bogus "populists" portrayed Donald Trump as an "anti-war" president, while he killed top Iranian and Iraqi officials, imposed suffocating sanctions on Cuba and Venezuela, waged a hybrid war on China, bombed the hell out of Afghanistan, expanded the war on Yemen, strongly supported apartheid Israel and Saudi Arabia, militarily occupied Syria and Iraq to take their oil, and tore up arms control agreements with Russia. The war in Ukraine has ushered in a new era of global politics, and it has also ushered in a new political witch hunt against dissenting voices. With more and more intensity, the corporate media – including social media giants – are closing ranks to squeeze out anyone who dares speak up in opposition to the Pentagon's narrative and against catastrophic confrontation between the United States and Russia. As is the case with any war, the war in Ukraine is being fought on many fronts: in the streets, in the financial realm, and in the media. The battle over information about the war itself, how it started, and who is most at fault (and what their motivations are) is a critical factor shaping how governments and citizens around the world respond to the unfolding conflict. In this panel, TRNN contributor Radhika Desai speaks with Benjamin Norton and Daniel Haiphong about Western media's coverage of the war, corporate media's complicity in fomenting conflict and feeding the military-industrial complex, and about what critical media literacy tools people can develop to better navigate the fog of war.Benjamin Norton is a journalist, writer, and filmmaker based in Latin America. The MintPress podcast, “The Watchdog,” hosted by British-Iraqi hip hop artist Lowkey, closely examines organizations about which it is in the public interest to know – including intelligence, lobby and special interest groups influencing policies that infringe on free speech and target dissent. The Watchdog goes against the grain by casting a light on stories largely ignored by the mainstream, corporate media. For Episode 24 of The Watchdog Podcast, Lowkey is joined by journalist Ben Norton to discuss the recent U.S.-backed coup in Pakistan, the West's plan to turn Ukraine into a neverending war, and the new multipolar global order taking shape before our eyes.Ben Norton is a Nicaragua-based journalist whose work is focused on U.S. foreign policy and international politics. The war in Ukraine has led to a closing of the ranks in the West, with media and politicians in lockstep united against Russia, and some self-described leftists have joined in. As with many recent conflicts the left has been riven by divisions over what is the correct position to take, with “Putinism” replacing “Assadism” as the new term used to excommunicate opponents of NATO and American intervention. To understand the history of the Western left and how wars over the last century have caused divisions, Rania Khalek was joined by Ben Norton, an investigative journalist based in Latin America, and editor of the independent news website Multipolarista. Twitter has also altered its rules against incitement and death threats in the case of Russian leaders and military personnel, as Ben Norton explains here for Multipolarista. Last month we also learned that Facebook is now allowing users to praise the Ukrainian neo-Nazi Azov Battalion because of the war, a move that is arguably the most liberal thing that has ever happened. Western institutions everywhere are rejecting all things Russia with such a savage degree of xenophobia it really ought to shock anyone who was born after the 1800s. Everything from Russian athletes to Russian musicians to Russian-made films to Russian composers to Russian Netflix shows to lectures about Russian authors to Russian restaurants to Russian vodka to Russian-bred cats to Russian trees to dishes that sound a little too much like "Putin" have been cancelled to varying degrees around the western world. Normally when the US and its allies are involved in a war they'll at least pay lip service to the notion that they have nothing but good will for the people of the enemy nation, claiming they only oppose their oppressive rulers. With Russia it's just a complete rejection of the entire culture, the entire ethnicity. It's a widespread promotion of hatred for the actual people because of who they are. Reading by Tim Foley.
As the world enters a new phase of major power conflict, it is crucial to understand the character of the Russian government and the role it plays on the world stage. Is Russia an imperialist power, equivalent to countries like the United States, France or the UK? How has the imperialist world system been set up – and is Russia in the club, or out? Moment of Clarity - Backstage of Redacted Tonight with Lee Camp
The US economy is struggling and everyone seems to have a different understanding of why. Lee Camp looks into the causes of the current labor struggles, some of the wackier symptoms of an economy in collapse, and a potential policy-based solution. Then Ben Norton from Multipolarista joins Lee to discuss and break down the crisis in Ukraine.
Lee Camp is joined by journalist and host of Multipolarista, Ben Norton, to break down what is going on between Ukraine and Russia. They look to the real causes of Russia's actions in Ukraine beyond the Western war propaganda. The story goes back to the '90s and the dissolution of the Soviet Union, when the NATO powers guaranteed Moscow that they wouldn't expand toward Russian borders. They broke that promise. Then the story moves to a US-backed coup in Ukraine in 2014 and the fallout after separatist movements tried to secede. Norton outlines the history and most important context for this moment of insecurity. Naomi Karavani reports on a story about the US' failing medical system. A Wisconsin hospital sued to stop some of their nurses from leaving for better-paying jobs. The decision to stop them from switching jobs only held for a short time until another judge overturned the decision. The story highlights the farce of income disparities between healthcare workers and executives. Finally, Anders Lee goes back into the history of the board game Monopoly. It was invented under the name The Landlord's Game to explain the brutal reality of capitalism. Then, in true capitalist fashion, the idea was commodified by big business and turned into a celebration of our exploitative system.
This week, the Project Censored Show's new co-host Eleanor Goldfield speaks first with Benjamin Norton to learn how President Biden is "out-Trumping Trump" on immigration. Norton also offers an update on political conditions in Latin America. In the second half of the show, Eleanor talks with Eugene Puryear who explains racism's deep roots in US history, and how it cannot be defeated by superficial actions. He also looks at the significance of Black History Month, which is this month. Benjamin Norton is an independent journalist who focuses on Latin America; he's also the founder of Multipolarista. Eugene Puryear has been a peace-and-justice organizer since his high-school days; he's the author of "Shackled and Chained: Mass Incarceration in Capitalist America," and he writes at Breakthrough News.
On this week's "Unauthorized Disclosure," we have one of our favorite guests, Ben Norton, who is the editor of Multipolarista and the host of "Propaganda Today." Ben describes how the so-called "trucker" protests (largely by non-truckers), which paralyzed the capitals of Brazil and Canada in the past six months, were backed by wealthy right-wing elites. Rania and Ben discuss fascism and the many forms it can take in a country. White working class people aren't the only group likely to engage in reactionary politics. Later, Kevin, Rania, and Ben go through examples of people at US think tanks and media outlets, who helped NATO and the military-industrial complex keep the temperature hot, even as Russia repeatedly stated it has no plans to invade Ukraine. On February 20, Russia is expected to conclude military exercises, including nuclear missile drill. Explosions were reported throughout February 18. Still, nothing points to an invasion of Ukraine yet. This weekend will be remarkable, as the laundering of disinformation around Russia and Ukraine enters its next phase. But one thing is certain: US journalists will continue to willingly publish the "intelligence" they receive, no matter how false or junky it may be.
Update on Steven Donziger's incarceration. A rightwing ideologue who helped prosecute Donziger on behalf of Chevron is now being appointed by Biden to be a judge on a federal circuit court. A simple country billionaire doesn't know what all the fuss is about with wealth and resources being concentrated in the hands of a few people. The Grayzone has lost an amazing reporter in Benjamin Norton (who is carrying on with a new project called Multipolarista), likely due to disagreements about the pandemic. Coronavirus doesn't exist yet more people have it than ever (call it "Fauci's Paradox"). The Great Barrington Declaration was funded by hard right think tanks, notably ones backed by the Koch brother (now singular). An "ex" CIA operative, now State Department spokesperson, was made to squirm under simple, basic journalistic questions and it was glorious. Anti-Russian propaganda accidentally celebrates Ukrainian Nazism.
