American folk singers, Sparky and Rhonda Rucker, discuss their popular and historically significant “Glory Hallelujah Suite” as part of our Julia Ward Howe/Battle Hymn of the Republic week. Learn about “Say Brothers Will You Meet Us?” “John Brown's Body,” “The Battle Hymn of the Republic,” and the “Marching Song of the First Arkansas Colored Regiment.” All of these were important songs in the Civil War era, but they have been given a higher beauty by being turned into a suite by Sparky and Rhonda. One of our best shows ever! Episode 571.

Voices In My Head (The Rick Lee James Podcast) Episode 512 - Canyon Hills Worship with guest Michael Monroe Canyon Hills Worship has been churning out album after album with DREAM Records since 2017. Though they have yet to charter an international smash the way Bethel, Hillsong Worship, UNITED, Jesus Culture and Chris Tomlin have, they are getting better with each record. The worship team is part of the Canyon Hills Church in Seattle, Washington, a church founded in 1995 by Steve and Tammi Walker. Now the church has over 3,500 people on a weekend, and more than 190 Life Groups functioning throughout the week. "All to Jesus (Live)" is the follow-up to 2022's "Spirit of God." Featuring 9 new live tracks and a studio version of their current radio single "Every Season," the songs center around the theme of surrender. This is most explicitly expressed in the ballad "Surrender." Utilizing the hook from the hymn "I Surrender All," the song is a drawn-out ballad that puts contemporary expressions to the ancient song. "Abide," a song inspired by the words of Jesus in John 14, describes what the posture of surrender looks like. With exquisite and heartfelt vocals, the team's rendition of the pensive ballad "Set Me on Fire" is the emotional hub of the album. "On and On," the team's most successful song, has generated over 10M streams and downloads. One listen to it and you know why. The ultra-catchy hook (You're holy, holy, holy are You, God/You're the only One who's holy) will get even the most tune-deaf person singing in no time. Worship leaders will also do well to include the pop-centric "Glory Hallelujah" into their song sets. Though the 80s-esque "Mercy of Jesus" has a singable-melody, the lyrics are forgettable. A greater reliance on scripture will make a track like "Every Season" rise from good to great. Canyon Hills Worship has shown improvement with each album. "All to Jesus (Live)" is easily their career best. With lots of congregationally focused songs, this album will help the church to learn what it means to truly surrender to Jesus. Cantus — Into the Light (Signum) Jump to giveaway form New Classical Tracks - Paul Scholtz and Alex Nishibun from Cantus by Each December, we find ourselves surrounded by the darkness of winter, as we prepare to say goodbye to the old year and welcome in the new. It can be a time of great promise. That's Cantus' idea behind their new holiday recording, Into the Light. “We try not to take for granted that we were able to come together and sing, which is what so many folks based in singing community choirs couldn't do,” says tenor Paul Scholtz. “But we had the privilege to do that because it is our full-time job. We wanted to bring that hopeful and celebratory energy to these performances.” Tenor Alexander Nishibun joins Scholtz to talk about their new holiday release. Tell me about Rosphanye Powell's ‘Glory Hallelujah to the Newborn King.' Alexander: “It has a killer opening solo by one of our great baritones, Rob Kelly Hines. One of the things we love about it is that Powell sets this beautiful poetry and creates this visceral excitement you feel in the music itself. It was also voiced for male voices by her husband, William C. Powell. So having that wonderful collaboration between these two artists and bringing it to Cantus was a real treat for all of us.” Tell me about Bebe Boykin's ‘O Magnum Mysterium.' Alexander: “That's one of my favorite pieces in this album. ‘O Magnum Mysterium' is this wonderful response to a text in Latin that I was introduced to us by a renaissance piece by Vitoria, which is about 500-something years old. Hearing it from this modern voice is astounding because it has this gravitas and weight. There's a huge respect for the language, which you can hear in how Boykin sets it. You hear the influence of the 21st-century ear and the 20th-century artists. You can get that sense because of how she treats the text. That informs us how we approach that particular song because of how she sets the lyrics.” Do you have a favorite track on the album? Paul: “The first one that comes to mind is Joni Mitchell's ‘River.' She's talked about it being a song she wrote for folks who feel lonely during Christmas. I think the way that consciousness can capture essentially what is a transcribed piano part underneath some soloists is beautiful. There's motion, which brings up and highlights the text.” Tell me about your reaction to premiering a new arrangement of ‘Silent Night.' Paul: “Christopher H. Harris has been a friend of the ensemble for a few years. We've programmed some of his pieces. He's an emerging composer and getting a lot of attention now, which is well-deserved. He agreed to write this brand new arrangement of ‘Silent Night' that allows us to explore some of the complex harmonies he put in here. It's one thing to see your line and to sing it, but then to have it come to life for the first time. This is a brand new arrangement, which means to have it come to life for you in that rehearsal room is an extraordinary moment.” Watch now To hear the rest of my conversation, click on the extended interview above, or download the extended podcast on iTunes or wherever you get your podcasts. Even though they come from different backgrounds, Jason Clayborn and Stephen McWhirter found their love for Jesus and their love for Christian music as common ground for them to come together, especially at a time when there is racial turmoil in the US and across the world. When they came together from two very different church music cultures (gospel and worship), what came out was something creative and full of life. In 2020, the two recorded Choir Sessions (featuring, Glory Hallelujah), afterwards they released the Christmas Single, Born A King, which was featured on the Chosen TV series Christmas Special (alongside such artists as Chris Tomlin, For King and Country, and Hillsong United). Jason and Stephen have been working together ever since, with albums like, Highest Praise (2021), and now their newest release, Rapha (2022), which they perform at the end of the episode. Elvis's death, in 1977, left me as a lifelong Presley fan, shattered at a psychic level. I decided to write a book, called In Search of Elvis, which has never been finished. Bono read an early draft and in February 1994, decided to add his name to those of the likes of Sam Phillips, June Juanico, and Leonard Cohen who had spoken to me about Presley. I ran part of our chat in 'The Joe Jackson Interview' slot in The Irish Times, This is the first part of the unedited tape which I will present in three podcasts.

Psalm 23 may be one of the most familiar passages in the Bible, yet it provides us with life-giving hope and comfort as we journey through life. It reminds us that our good, good Shepherd not only cares deeply about every aspect of our lives; but that He provides for all of our needs, He protects us, He leads us, He is faithful to always be with us, and He even gave His own life to save us! May we worship and celebrate our Shepherd. May we sing: “Holy, Holy, Holy – Glory Hallelujah to our King and Saviour – now and forever!” (John 10:14-15)

If you don’t believe in God, how do you raise your kids with core values and guiding principles? Isn’t it lonely without a higher being? If nothing means anything than what’s the point? We discuss all of this & more in today’s episode. Upspeak theme music is Dreams by Taken By Trees. Additional music in this episode, in play order, was: Song for a Blue Guitar by Red House Painters; American Dreaming by Dead Can Dance; I Started a Joke by Lauren O’Connell; Pocket Full of Rainbows by Elvis Presley; Glory Hallelujah by Frank Turner; Hard Believer by First Aid Kit; Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley; Cold Little Heart by Michael Kiwanuka
Scripture: Exodus 33:12-34:7
Some would say that we live in a scary time. Terrorism. Lawlessness among nations. Economic chaos and upheaval. Ecological concerns. Does it frighten you? Do you ever wonder, as many have who have lived before us, how it will all end? Christmas is about God entering our world. He is Immanuel – God with us! But it is also about a plan – God’s plan; “In the fullness of time God sent forth His Son, born of a woman…” Gal. 3. How will it all end? And what does it mean for us in our lives right now? This is God’s Christmas gift for us, today!

It's not a stretch to call U.K. singer-songwriter Frank Turner a folksinger, especially when he performs solo with an acoustic guitar. But he's also a rocker, a punk and a storyteller. Hear Frank Turner & The Sleeping Souls perform as part of the 2013 Newport Folk Festival "Four Simple Words" "If Ever I Stray" "Try This At Home" "Losing Days" "Glory Hallelujah" "The Way I Tend To Be" "Wessex Boy" "Substitute" "Wherefore Art Thou, Gene Simmons?" "The Road" "Peggy Sang The Blues" "Recovery" "I Still Believe" "Photosynthesis"
