What can you learn about leadership and culture from a guy whose background is in music and dueling pianos? A LOT! Greg Offner talks about The Tip Jar culture coming from corporate HR and risk management, he noticed what really got people engaged at work and at the dueling piano bar. His lessons serve us all. Key points for leaders to ponder: • Work is a performance. We perform a task. We are in service to others. • Show up from a place of service pondering, “What do they need from me to make sure this performance goes well?” • Your job as a leader is to remove the friction, anything that can get in their way of doing a good job. • Your title or rank is simply a validation, not a reward. It's a tool of authority. How will you use that tool? • Know that by working together, we elevate the experience of everyone! Beware of misaligned incentives. • Note that you can't create engagement. You create an experience. ○ When team members choose to engage or disengage, a decision was made to do just that. • The culture shifts to creating impact vs. trading hours for income. • Create shared values - ○ Allow people to opt in ◘ Create actionable steps for them to do so. ◘ Teach them how to fit in so there's a sense of ownership As the host of OneSharpSword, I loved this interview. Greg Offner is a master presenter and he speaks to a pet of mine, building a Culture of Caring, from such a unique perspective. Reach out to Greg on all social media. We conclude our discussion with Gregory Offner with an admonition to run towards success or desires. Once you run away, you likely will keep running. This topic swings us back around to the idea of approach-avoidance. We generally avoid things we do not like more than more towards what we enjoy. While some may see that as a realist approach, it can be a form of self-fulfilling prophecy. One ends up running away so often they miss the things they enjoy. Run Towards Success We have many reasons to move to another job, relationship, or situation. When we move away from something we want to avoid, it can be constricting. The focus becomes avoidance rather than embracing the things we want. Thus, it is essential to run towards success to make progress. Running away may take us further away from happiness than where we were. Think about a burning building. You want to get out and away. You might end up running off a cliff and in a worse situation. On the other hand, when you leave the building heading towards the place you want to go for dinner, it is a journey towards your objectives. That may seem a thin analogy, but it is closer than you might think. A Little Background Doctors handed Gregory two options: lose the ability to speak forever, or undergo a vocal surgery that would require a complicated and lengthy recovery. But Gregory soon learned that this first procedure was only the beginning. Five years and 15 surgeries later, Gregory transformed both his voice and his life. Today, as an award-winning keynote performer, Gregory helps organizations and the people within them elevate the experience of work and use piano bar secrets to inspire their people, amplify teamwork & collaboration, and build organizations full of highly fulfilled, high-performing people. He discovered his perspectives on navigating change, and his passion for creating experiences that 'rock' could serve, inspire, and delight audiences worldwide. The use of music in his programs (as a metaphor for engagement and resilience) connects with audiences in a deep and unforgettable performance. Thus, leaving them refreshed and equipped with skills to reframe obstacles as opportunities. His programs have broad appeal. Therefore, they can be customized to suit events with a diverse mix of roles and responsibilities in the audience. That includes audiences composed mainly of leaders. We continue our discussion with Gregory Offner and look into quiet quitting. This phenomenon can be fixed through motivation. Thus, investing in your staff can help them grow and help the organization avoid employee disengagement. The result of investing in your employees is engagement and that provides a win-win situation. They get more out of their job, and you get more productive employees. Quiet Quitting is Just Disengagement The term quiet quitting is fairly new. However, the sentiment is ages old. It all boils down to employees falling into a rut. They feel under-utilized, unappreciated, or trap in a dead-end job. That leads to disengagement and a lack of getting their best out of them. That is a problem no matter what your perspective is. We all should want to see our team members give their best and they should strive to do so. Anything else is less than ideal and worth addressing. Give your team members a reason to come to work and they will be engaged, happy, and everyone wins. A Little Background Doctors handed Gregory two options: lose the ability to speak forever, or undergo a vocal surgery that would require a complicated and lengthy recovery. This episode of our Gregory Offner interview series looks at root goal analysis. He shares his story and how it can be used to create a pattern interrupt that helps others. We can all find ourselves in a rut and with an improper focus. The discussion here goes into how we should review our goals and set them to truly achieve our wants and desires. Root Goal Analysis - A Proper Focus Life is full of distractions. That includes things that can make us think we are progressing towards our objectives but are leading us away. For example, a job that supports a hobby instead of turning that hobby into our job. While there are many things we have to do, there are also those we think we must do. The core of root goal analysis is a proper focus on what we need to do to progress towards our goals. Thus, we craft a direct route to our objectives instead of taking several detours along the way. A Little Background Doctors handed Gregory two options: lose the ability to speak forever, or undergo a vocal surgery that would require a complicated and lengthy recovery. I'm sure we've all heard that words have power. They have meaning, they create purpose. So what would happen if you lost your power of the spoken word? Today's guest Gregory Offner, was a world-renown dueling pianist who just happened to also have a 15 year career leading sales and marketing efforts for some of the worlds largest companies. Then, tragedy struck. Doctors handed Gregory two options: lose the ability to speak forever, or undergo a vocal surgery that would require a complicated and lengthy recovery; effectively halting both his sales and music career. But Gregory soon learned that this first procedure was only the beginning. Five years and 15 surgeries later, Gregory transformed both his voice and his life. Today, as an award-winning keynote performer, Gregory helps organizations and the people within them shape cultures of highly fulfilled, high-performing people.   He discovered his perspectives on navigating change, and his passion for creating experiences that 'rock' could serve, inspire, and delight audiences around the world. The use of music in his programs (as a metaphor for engagement and resilience) connects with audiences in a deep and unforgettable performance; leaving them refreshed and equipped with skills to reframe obstacles as opportunities. His programs have broad appeal, and can be customized to suit events with a diverse mix of roles and responsibilities in the audience, as well as for audiences composed mainly of leaders. After all, it is only through honest self-reflection that we can learn and grow. By looking back at our successes and failures, we can gain invaluable insights into what works and what doesn't. All leaders can benefit from coaching to improve their leadership style. A coach can help leaders to identify areas where they need to develop, and provide guidance and support as they work to improve their skills. Leaders who are committed to continuous improvement will be better able to meet the challenges of a constantly changing world.  A coach can also help leaders to identify their strengths and weaknesses, and to develop strategies for leveraging their strengths and addressing their weaknesses. In addition, a coach can provide an objective perspective on leadership issues, helping leaders to make better decisions. Root goal analysis leads to stringer and more meanigful personal and organizational goals.    Memorable Quotes From Gregory Offner   “One of the most undervalued skills that every leader has to possess (is this): you have to be able to listen, when you ask the right questions.
