For the first episode of A is for Architecture's 2025 offer, I was very lucky to be joined by the great architect, writer, theorist and educator, Bernard Tschumi.  We discuss, among other things, his most recent book, Event-Cities 5: Poetics (MIT Press 2024). Globally celebrated for his innovative contributions to contemporary architecture and urbanism, Professor Tschumi has gained international acclaim through both his theoretical works, like The Manhattan Transcripts (1976-1981) and Architecture and Disjunction (1994), as well as iconic projects like the Parc de la Villette in Paris (1982-1998). Tschumi's designs challenge traditional notions of form and function, emphasizing the dynamic interplay between space, movement, and event. A former Dean of the GSAPP at Columbia University, he has authored several influential books, including the Event-Cities series (1994-2024), cementing his status as a leading voice in architectural thought. This was a really special recording for me, and a bit of a dream really. Bernard Tschumi! Unreal. Tschumi Architects can be found here are on Instagram here. In A is for Architecture's seventh episode in 2022/3's offer, I speak with Professor Gwendolyn Wright of Colombia University's Graduate School of Architecture, Planning & Preservation (GSAPP), New York and presenter of PBS' History Detectives. We met on Zoom to talk about her 2008 book, USA, part of Reaktion Book's Modern Architectures in History series, a book which ‘traces a history that spans from early skyscrapers and suburbs in the aftermath of the American Civil War up to the museums, schools and ‘green architecture' of today [describing] diverse interests that affected design, ranging from politicians and developers to ambitious immigrants and middle-class citizens […] Wright reframes the history of American architecture as one of constantly evolving and volatile sensibilities, engaged with commerce, attuned to new media, exploring multiple concepts of freedom.' You can get the book via The University of Chicago Press' website here. You can also hear Gwen talk at GSAPP with Michael Kimmelman about architecture's public, in a presentation entitled Who's Listening? Also, here she is speaking when accepting the Society of Architectural Historian's Award for Excellence in Architectural Media in 2012, and here about History Detectives as part of the Chicago Humanities Festival. We're back, starting with a short conversation with Tel Aviv based programmer and designer Ariel Malka, who develops experimental interactive projects. Next we hear TJB's audio performance, expressing the artist’s non-binary self as 40 droplets of water impacting a heated sheet of steel. Following that, we have our monthly conversation, which is about “Utopia,” the elusive and idyllic no-place of a happier and more just society. The idea of utopia has had many consequences throughout history, and much has been built and unbuilt around it. Participants in this conversation include a diverse group of researchers, artists and designers composed by Susana Delahante Matienzo (Cuban, based in Amsterdam), Giuliana Visco (based in Rome), and Ou Ning (based in China). Finally, our host Sylvain Souklaye chats with KMRU to introduce the work of Sarah Badr (FRKTL), whose new, untitled sound art piece closes the episode. This podcast series is produced by Sylvain Souklaye, with Dalida María Benfield and Chris Bratton. Ariel Malkahttp://ariel.chronotext.org/ TJB TJB, is a non-binary artist-philosopher whose work focuses upon the conception of the body, Being and the idea of a multiplicity of Self/s in performance. This work can be located within the framework of performance art and philosophical/phenomenological investigations that look to de/construct and challenge perception, alongside the assumed liminal barriers of body-based art. Xe is known for creating artworks that capture an altered space, environment, or period of time that regardless of scale, will often make intense, sometimes visceral, beautiful pieces that place the body in extremis. Living and working in the UK, TJB has been exhibiting work since 2001 and internationally since 2009 particularly through Europe and East coast USA. TJB is also the artistic director of Tempting Failure, which produces the London Biennial of International Performance Art, and curates a wide range of transgressive performance art practices. You can find out more about TJB at tjb.org.uk and they’d like to extend an invitation to all listeners to engage with their unique ongoing project In/Visible Exchange where TJB expands conversations away from social media via unique electronic zines based entirely on the questions sent to them.https://www.temptingfailure.com/ FRKTL is the solo experimental project of British-Egyptian audiovisual artist Sarah Badr. A classically trained multi-instrumentalist utilizing live sampling and improvisation, vocal manipulation, field recordings, and generative rhythms, she composes immersive, hypnotic, and haunting explorations of sound. For the past decade, Badr’sinterdisciplinary art practice has expounded on world creation in four dimensions, augmenting photography and footage with computer-generated imagery and sound design. Her mixes and DJ sets seamlessly blend disparate genres, challenging preconceptions of spaces real and virtual. Badr studied Creative Computing (BSc) at Goldsmiths, University of London; and International Relations (BSc)and Law (LLB)at the London School of Economics. Raised between London, Cairo, New York, and Manama, Badr now lives and works between Riga, Cairo, Berlin, and London.FRKTL releases include Prose Edda (EP,2017); Qualia (LP, 2016); Descent / Fjäder(double single, 2013); Atom (LP, 2011);and B-Sides (mini-album, 2011). Working in "helping fields" can have significant stress and emotional effects on the providers themselves, inherently interfering with the efficiency, health and well-being, and overall functioning of these providers. It is incumbent upon providers to be selfish, putting themselves first, to sustain a fulfilling and rewarding life while remaining passionate about their work. It is important for athletic trainers to understand the benefits of practicing mindfulness. This talk will address issues related to the practice of athletic training and include the introduction of compassion fatigue, the negative effects of burnout, provide tools for healthy coping, and includes practical examples and practices that athletic trainers can integrate into their busy schedules. In this episode, Dr Pete Economou sheds some light on this topic with audio from a symposium presentation he delivered at the 2019 RWJBarnabas Health Summer Athletic Training Personal Development Symposium. Pete J. Economou Ph.D., ABPP was trained in counseling psychology and is an Associate Professor at Rutgers University in the graduate school of applied and professional psychology (GSAPP), also serving as the associate chair for the Applied Department. Dr. Pete is the founder of a clinical practice specializing in Cognitive and Behavioral Therapy (CBT), he is licensed by NJ and NY to practice psychology, and he is board certified in CBT. Dr. Pete has conducted research in several areas including: multicultural psychology, evidence-based treatments (mainly third wave CBT), Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) issues, and learning challenges related to executive functioning. He is an active member of state and national psychology associations, has been on the editorial board of the Journal of Clinical Sports Psychology since 2014, and is a contributor to media outlets and social media. Lastly, as a student of Zen Buddhism, Dr. Pete has been studying at the Morning Star Zendo with Robert Kennedy, Roshi for several years, which has translated into his mindfulness practices offered through the third wave CBT theories. In a landmark decision last month, Columbia University graduate students won the right to unionize in a case filed against the National Labor Relations Board. As a result, graduate students in private universities across the U.S. now have the right to collectively bargain. What effect does this have on architecture student labor, and the valuation of architecture overall? We're joined this week by special guest A.L. Hu, a third-year GSAPP MArch student and key organizer with Graduate Workers of Columbia (GWC-UAW). Hu shared what's happening at the school after the landmark decision, and how these organizing efforts can affect the architecture profession overall.

For thingsmatter, architectural production means engaging with Bangkok's kaleidoscopic commercial culture; they use traditional hard surfaces and electronic media to create environments, exhibitions, free-standing buildings, and more. When asked to describe thingmatter, a GSAPP faculty member came up with another set of keywords, calling their work a combination of "OMA, the Wooster Group, and Seventeen magazine."

In February 2011, following six years of cutting-edge research on artificial intelligence by the DeepQA Project at IBM, a computing system named Watson defeated two human champions in the game show Jeopardy! In May 2010, after thirty years of steady growth in algorithmic trading, hundreds of unnamed computers ordered a flurry of trades without human input and caused the United States stock market to lose 9% of its value in five minutes. Autonomous algorithms now influence many aspects of our lives, including our built environment.
