This week on the Everything Actioncast, Zach and Chris join the Starleague to defend The Frontier and talk about 1984's The Last Starfighter, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary.Lance Guest stars as Alex Rogan, who wishes to escape his trailer park home and unexpectedly gets his chance when, after beating the record on the arcade machine Starfighter, he's recruited by intergalactic hustler Centauri (Robert Preston) to put his skills to the test for real, become a Starfighter for the planet Rylos, and help them defeat the evil Xur (Norman Snow) and the invading Ko-Dan armada. Zach and Chris try to figure out Centauri's scheme for making money off Starfighter, celebrate the greatness of Grig (Dan O'Herlihy), the wacky adventures of Beta, the (at the time) cutting-edge CG effects, and more. You can rent or buy The Last Starfighter on platforms like Amazon. Originally aired on May 8, 2023.This week, I'm working on the coverart for the track that I was working on in episode 402.  The track itself is now done, and you can actually listen to it at the end of this episode or on Bandcamp.    However, the picture to go with the track was not.  I wanted it to be pixelart and decided to give a nod to some of the 80s and 90s films that influenced the story and themes in The Thirteenth Hour - films like Flight of the Navigator, The Last Starfighter, Back to the Future, The Rocketeer, and The Neverending Story.  I used the silver ship, Max, from Flight of the Navigator, the Delorean from Back to the Future, the Gunstar from The Last Starfighter, Atreyu riding Falkor from The Neverending Story, and Cliff Secord from The Rocketeer - all fliers - flanking the pixelart Logan that I made decades ago.  In true form, Logan is flying through the air leaving a rainbow exhaust trail (where the track gets its name).Speaking of Flight of the Navigator, the slow intro that I used for this track was meant to be a direct ode also to the most excellent soundtrack of that film done by Alan Silvestri (who also did the Back to the Future soundtrack).    You can actually find the whole soundtrack on Youtube:https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLq6QtwrGW1_9HF_LyRS1DNvCl8slXcYNOListen to the track in full here! https://joshuablum.bandcamp.com/track/riding-a-rainbow∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞ Signup for the mailing list for a free special edition podcast, a demo copy of The Thirteenth Hour, and access to retro 80s soundtrack!Like what you see or hear? Time for another episode of the podcast, and this time we delve into our favourite sci-fi artificial intelligences. We largely ignore ambulatory A.I., so you won't find much talk of robots or androids here. Instead we try (but don't always succeed) to discuss the type of A.I. that won't chase you down a corridor or strangle you. Among the works mentioned are some Star Treks; some Keith Laumer, Asimov, Clarke and Gerrold; and several classic movies that highlight our human terror at the thought that computers might one day take over. Read more about science fiction's use of artificial intelligence in the Encyclopedia of Science Fiction and the Historical Dictionary of Science Fiction. Other things that pop up in our discussion include: The Best Science Fiction and Fantasy Short Fiction Facebook group Andy Weir's Facebook AMA Is the Gunstar a Better Design than the Starfury? on YouTube Patricia McKillip Fredric Brown We hope you enjoy our discussion - and please let us know your favourite fictional A.I.

As they discuss the well known favourites like Contra and Metal Slug, and the blockbuster movie influence on the games of the time, we ask is the genre all 90s explosions and testosterone? Movie Meltdown - Episode 446 This week we round out our coverage of this year's WonderFest as we talk with Rick Sternbach about space, art and the movies and projects he's worked on. (Including Carl Sagan's Cosmos, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, The Last Starfighter, The Black Hole, Solaris and Star Trek: The Next Generation.) Plus we are joined by our somewhat annual, reluctant co-host Eric Chu. And while we work on building our own Cray supercomputer, we also bring up… Deadpool 2, Better Watch Out, the new Lost in Space, doing artwork for science fiction and astronomy magazines, Larry Niven, set design, Alan Tudyk, you create something and then it goes back into it’s raw form, water slide decals, Harold had worked with Hitchcock, Juggernaut, Mars Attacks trading cards, Hal Clement, a different hand/eye skill set, we didn’t have computers in 1978, Theodore Sturgeon, she’d worked on the B-1 bomber, the early days of digital, his pencil drawings of the Gunstar, geometry, I got to see the evolution of the whole process, the Air Force would pay him to play with future concepts, Gordon Dickson, scribbling, I was just nuts about marine mammals, Destination Moon, The Lensman series, Forbidden Planet, Isaac Asimov, Chuck Jones, the Kodan mothership, do the next polygon, Brad Pitt, Arthur C. Clarke, wanted to learn more about cetaceans and pinnipeds, Star Trek 2: the second five year mission of the Enterprise, let them be messy, Joe Haldeman, control panel graphics, organic chem, space conference projects, a well-rounded art experience, planetary models, cell animation, Virginia Madsen, a transistor radio, doggone it... I got to see them take off, Jackson Pollock, twist on a twist, Men into Space, nothing in Earth’s orbit, Gene Roddenberry, there is a lot of structure in there, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Josh Brolin in a catsuit, home invasion, I think my artistic output was a product of the times, one of the Gemini missions, Patrick Warburton, it was important to witness that history, for me… old school was the best school, giddy and wanted to take the risk, X-Men cameos and the golden record on the Voyager spacecraft. “I will tell you the crazy story…” To keep up with Rick, check out his Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/rick.sternbach And for more on WonderFest, go to: https://wonderfest.com/

A young man named Alex Rogan is desperate to escape his small little world in the Starlight Starbright trailer park. His only escape is in the one arcade game at the trailer park, Starfighter. Alex had no idea this game would be the gateway to another life among the stars as a reluctant hero. Invasion of the Remake goes back to a childhood favorite in The Last Starfighter (1984) rethinking it as a modern remake and how modern gaming might change this sci-fi, adventure film, while still considering the more personal elements that affect Alex's life. Strap yourselves into your Gunstars cause this one is going to be a blast of awesome! Do you have a film you want to challenge us to remake? We may do it for a future episode. Maybe a movie mash-up?
