It is based on the character of the same name created by comic book artist and writer Dave Stevens.Set in 1938 Los Angeles, California, The Rocketeer tells the story of stunt pilot Cliff Secord, who discovers a hidden rocket pack that he thereafter uses to fly without the need of an aircraft. His heroic deeds soon attract the attention of Howard Hughes and the FBI, who are hunting for the missing rocket pack, as well as the Nazi operatives who stole it from Hughes. This week, it's not me reading the next chapter of the Peter David penned movie novelization of the 1991 Rocketeer film. That's because we have a special guest - Billy Campbell, who played the Cliff Secord / the Rocketeer in the 1991 film - is taking point to read Chapter 14! Billy was last on the show in 2022 (follow this link for a preview of an exclusive podcast recorded for people who had supported fundraising efforts for the Hairy Cell Leukemia Foundation in memory of Rocketeer creator, Dave Stevens). This chapter takes place in one my favorite parts of the original comic and the film, the Bulldog Cafe. If you like ambient, mood-setting background noise / "study music," you will love this this Bulldog Cafe-inspired video as if you were sitting in a booth of the Cafe. Episode 500 is coming in a few weeks! If you were a past guest on the show, check your messages this week for more details on the recording session on 3/2/25.Thanks, Billy, for your excellent reading, and thank you for listening!∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞ Signup for the mailing list for a free special edition podcast, a demo copy of The Thirteenth Hour, and access to retro 80s soundtrack!Like what you see or hear? In honor of Cliff Secord's birthday, 10/26, I'm reading the third chapter of the Peter David penned movie novelization of the 1991 Rocketeer film. (What I really love about the bio Dave Stevens penned for Cliff is that it gives both backstory and motivation for his character as well as why, in 1938, he is flying the Gee-Bee Z, a plane from the early 30s, for the first time in 1938. You can tell that Dave had put quite a bit of thought into the character and the history of the era.) This chapter basically picks up in the spot in the film where Cliff, already in the air, gets show down by a gangster being chased by the police and the FBI. Although we never really get to see Cliff fly the Gee-Bee racer in an actual race, the fact that he is able to land the plane after the engine gets shot out and without landing gear suggests he has more than enough skill as a pilot - not surprising since he later becomes the Rocketeer.
The Rocketeer. Maybe you've seen it. Maybe you haven't. If you're of a particular generation, particularly of an age that had their brains absolutely melted by Tim Burton's Batman movie in 1989 (which we have an episode on the way about), then The Rocketeer was one of a slate of summer movies that hoped to replicate the runaway success of Batman. For some folks, it sure did. For others…notably the general ticket buying public, it fell a little short. But The Rocketeer is a truly wonderful movie that has accumulated a deserved cult following over the years. Its central concept is simple enough: stunt pilot Cliff Secord accidentally stumbles on to a prototype rocket pack being developed for possible military use. The only problem is that Nazi spies want to get their hands on it. All poor Cliff wants to do is impress his girlfriend. Adventure (and hijinx) ensue on schedule.Full of spectacular practical effects flight sequences, The Rocketeer, like the Indiana Jones or Star Wars franchises before it, is a wonderful homage to the movie serials of the 1930s, 40s, and 50s. Part of its appeal is the simplicity of that “solo flight via jetpack” concept, and it's one that has a fair amount of basis in real history and science! So join us as we take a deeper look at The Rocketeer to determine if Cliff, well…you know!Watch the latest episode of Does it Fly? right here or check it out on our YouTube page!SUGGESTED VIEWING Folks, if you haven't seen The Rocketeer, do yourself a favor. It's available on Disney+ and it's a delightful, nostalgic, family-friendly, action-packed romp that is a little similar in tone to the Indiana Jones franchise. No sequels or big franchises here, but that's part of the charm. However, that doesn't mean there isn't cool Rocketeer-adjacent stuff for you to check out! Joe Johnston is an underrated director and we'd humbly recommend Honey, I Shrunk the Kids (hmmm…a potential future Does it Fly? episode, perhaps?), Jumanji, The Wolfman (a terrific horror movie that's due for re-evaluation), and Captain America: The First Avenger. But for those looking to dig even deeper, the Rocketeer concept was inspired by the movie serials of the 1930s, ‘40s, and early ‘50s, specifically Republic Pictures' excellent King of the Rocket Men (1949), Commando Cody: Sky Marshal of the Universe (1952), and Zombies of the Stratosphere (1953). Movie serials might be tough for modern audiences to digest, but all three of these feature terrific stunts and outstanding wire and model work to simulate flight, and it's very clear how they influenced the creation of the Rocketeer character and the style of the movie. FURTHER READING Do you want to delve a little deeper into the facts, concepts, and stories Hakeem and Tamara referenced in today's episode? Of course you do! Hero of AlexandriaWhile this also sounds like a movie title, it isn't. Check out a breakdown of his accomplishments, some of which were years, even centuries, ahead of their time.Rocket Concepts in 1861?!?Hakeem is referring to the work of Reverend William Leitch, who wrote an essay called A Journey Through Space which correctly predicted a number of spaceflight principles. Again, we're talking about 1861. You can read that essay in full here. The Bell Rocket Belt100 years after Reverend Leitch, someone did actually build a working prototype of something called a Rocket Belt. Lots more info on that, as well as some remarkable photographs, can be found here. The Nazis had been working on a concept during World War II, as well.Newton's Laws of MotionYou ain't flying without adhering to these rules, which are thankfully broken down in easy-to-understand language right here.Erroll Flynn Did a Lot of Things, But Not THATAdventure movie leading man Erroll Flynn lived, well, let's just say he lived an interesting life. But one thing he wasn't? A Nazi spy. We suspect that urban legend began with a particular biographer, and some details on that are here. The Practical Effects of The RocketeerThe interview Tamara references with Rocketeer's VFX artist Tom St. Amand can be found here, and it's every bit as fascinating as she says!WANT MORE FROM DOES IT FLY?Want more retro adventures with a Does it Fly? twist? In this episode, Chris welcomes back Scott from “DC Squadcast” to discuss “The Rocketeer”. Dave Steven's created what many consider to be one of the most enduring superheroes which proved to be one of the first successful features to emerge from the burgeoning independent comics movement in the 1980s. Cliff Secord, a down-on-his luck pilot, is always looking for ways to make a fast buck. Discovering a stolen rocket pack could be the one thing that will turn his fortunes around... but will it? What follows are government agents, German spies, deception, danger, and adventure. This is the world of... The Rocketeer! Originally aired on May 8, 2023.This week, I'm working on the coverart for the track that I was working on in episode 402. The track itself is now done, and you can actually listen to it at the end of this episode or on Bandcamp. However, the picture to go with the track was not. I wanted it to be pixelart and decided to give a nod to some of the 80s and 90s films that influenced the story and themes in The Thirteenth Hour - films like Flight of the Navigator, The Last Starfighter, Back to the Future, The Rocketeer, and The Neverending Story. I used the silver ship, Max, from Flight of the Navigator, the Delorean from Back to the Future, the Gunstar from The Last Starfighter, Atreyu riding Falkor from The Neverending Story, and Cliff Secord from The Rocketeer - all fliers - flanking the pixelart Logan that I made decades ago. In true form, Logan is flying through the air leaving a rainbow exhaust trail (where the track gets its name).Speaking of Flight of the Navigator, the slow intro that I used for this track was meant to be a direct ode also to the most excellent soundtrack of that film done by Alan Silvestri (who also did the Back to the Future soundtrack). Today's episode is brought to you by Reburn. Please, treat yourself and get a copy of this brilliant indie comic. The Rocketeer "Using the stolen rocket-pack for the first time, racing pilot Cliff Secord has taken to the skies - in a desperate bid to save the life of a fellow flyer!" - from the opening of chapter 2, on page 19 That breathless style of narration and the accompanying first-rate illustrations (to wit: just look at that striking action hero pose adorning the cover . . . which is incredibly misleading, because his pistol-packing scenes last for a single scant page) ought to help in making The Rocketeer - possibly best remembered these days from the very good 1991 live-action film version by Disney, done in the vein of the Indiana Jones series - a sky-blazing success. However, I was disappointed by this book - it's one of those rare cases where the movie inspired by it is much better! The titular character is a dork who usually lucks into being heroic rather than, you know, actually being solid hero material. The two stories were subpar (they were supposed to be connected, but the second one confusingly heads off in another direction after an obligatory origin tale) and the so-called humor seemed forced most of the time. The sole saving grace? Said 'hero's girlfriend was drawn to resemble the real-life pin-up queen Bettie Page. However, a pretty face was not enough to save the day in this case. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/comics-in-motion-podcast/message

During their escape from the authorities, the getaway driver hides the rocket pack at an airfield, and stunt pilot Cliff Secord's Gee Bee racer is wrecked in the chase, crippling his career. Movie star Neville Sinclair had hired Valentine's gang to steal the rocket pack, and he sends his monstrous henchman Lothar to question the injured getaway driver about its location before killing him. The Rocketeer is a beloved 1991 Disney film. Based on Dave Stevens' comic series, which debuted in 1982, it revolves around stunt pilot Cliff Secord's (Bill Campbell) fortuitous discovery of a jetpack created by Howard Hughes. Of course, adventure ensues. The character was created as a tribute to the 1930s serials that had inspired wonder in the youth of their day. Both the comics and film execute that homage perfectly. The Rocketeer is indeed a cult classic. Loaded with charm—which is anchored by the majestic score of James Horner—it serves as a delightful reminder of the comic book films of yesteryear. Those films had to rely far less on CGI and far more on making the viewers organically believe in the magic they were presenting. They also had a much slimmer margin for error. They weren't the commodity they are now, so there wasn't an excess of "superhero" cinema. Unfortunately for The Rocketeer, it failed to take flight at the box office. It grossed just $46.7 million on a budget of $40 million, sending the sequel plans to the crap heap. The good news: Despite some dodgy green screen here and there, it remains a very enjoyable time; and its enduring appeal seems to be leading to a sequel series for Disney+! In this episode of In Search of the Crystal Skull, Patricia and Arun discuss about the 1991 Disney film The Rocketeer based on the 1982 comic book series of the same name. It takes place in Los Angeles in 1938 where a stunt pilot named Cliff Secord and his friend Peevy find a jet pack from pilot and philanthropist Howard Hughes. Cliff uses the jet pack to become a mysterious superhero called The Rocketeer. Meanwhile the mafia was hired by an unknown adversary to retrieve the jet pack for a plan involving with the Nazi army taking over the world. When the film premiered in theaters, critics enjoyed its fun sense of adventure in an older time, but felt it had a few shortcomings. It didn't help that Disney wanted to make it into a trilogy making The Rocketeer their equivalent of the Indiana Jones series, but due to not making as much money as they hoped, plans for a franchise was scrapped. It has since gained a cult following and had a Disney Junior animated series in 2019 focusing on Cliff's great-granddaughter who is the new Rocketeer. It currently has a 66% on Rotten Tomatoes. What do Patricia and Arun think about the film? --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/old-school-lane/support

Welcome to 1991! Our first episode rockets into your podcast app of choice as Cliff Secord finds a mysterious jetpack and is soon catapulted into a conflict between the feds, the mob, and the Nazis... oh my! Billy Campbell, Timothy Dalton, Jennifer Connelly, and Alan Arkin star in The Rocketeer. The Trailer:
“Feature Film” – The RocketeerWikipediaSet in 1938 Los Angeles, California, The Rocketeer tells the story of stunt pilot Cliff Secord who stumbles upon a hidden rocket-powered jet pack that he thereafter uses to fly without the need of an aircraft. His heroic deeds soon attract the attention of Howard Hughes and the FBI, who are hunting for the missing jet pack, as well as the Nazi operatives that stole it from Hughes.Trivia - IMDBThe character of Neville Sinclair was loosely modelled after Errol Flynn, who was suspected of being a Nazi spy.The Gee Bee racer was nicknamed "The Widowmaker" and "The Flying Coffin" because it was incredibly difficult to fly and was prone to crashing. Because of its speed and maneuverability, some pilots still raced it despite the danger. The actual Gee Bee used in filming was only allowed to land a very limited amount of times during its time working on the movie, as landings are extremely hard on the landing gear of this particular plane.During the fight scene on-board the zeppelin, Cliff says to Neville, "Where's your stuntman now Sinclair?", to which Neville replies "I do my own stunts." This line is in reference to Timothy Dalton's time as James Bond, since he is known for being the only Bond actor to perform most of his own stunts.Billy Campbell, who once studied commercial art, made sure to read the Dave Stevens graphic novel, on which this film was based. He got the part after getting a haircut to make himself look identical to the character in the graphic novel.Joe Johnston's work on this film is what led to his hiring as director of Captain America: The First Avenger Disney had a special mechanism built especially for this film. Called the "Shaky-cam", it was designed to be the exact opposite of the "Steady-cam", that is, to introduce vibrations into the picture. This was used in the scenes filmed inside the Zeppelin to give the impression of the power of the engines. When the movie went to video, the effect didn't transfer too well, and was therefore steadied.Segment: News/Announcements “The Newsies Banner”Black Beauty coming to Disney + November 27thBorn free in the American West, Black Beauty is rounded up and brought to Birtwick Stables, where she meets spirited teenager Jo Green. Originally aired on August 10, 2020.This week, I'm working on the title track from the next Thirteenth Hour soundtrack LP, Once Upon a Dream. I have the keyboard riffs and the lyrics mostly done and am now trying to figure out how they go together. I've recorded a bare bones version here with just the vocals and the piano chords, which is how many of these songs start. In the coming week's, I'll be refining the skeleton of the song as I figure out how the different riffs work into the song, where the backing beat will come in, how the solo will sound, etc.In the Like a Hood Ornament segment, I'm talking a bit about how my kids and I have been working on a costume paper mache rocketpack for my daughter for Halloween (she'd like to be Kit Secord from the cartoon, who you can see at the bottom of these images below).Viewable at: https://13thhr.wordpress.com/2020/08/10/the-thirteenth-hour-podcast-261-musical-interlude-the-making-of-once-upon-a-dream-and-like-a-hood-ornament-16-the-last-rocketeer-and-kit-secord-rocketpack-updates/We still have to figure out how to attach straps, and I'm wondering if it might be fun to figure out how to light up the engines and/or attach the little banks of purple LEDs on the bottom that this version of the pack has. Maybe we'll make an electrical switch wired to the gloves, like in the movie. Also, the next segment of the fanfic short story, "The Last Rocketeer," describing a team-up between Centauri from The Last Starfighter and a 71 year-old Cliff Secord who has long since given up being the Rocketeer (but secretly wants one last flight) is up.You can read the first chapter on Wattpad here: https://www.wattpad.com/919346978-the-last-rocketeer-1-in-which-cliff-finds-aHere's part 2: https://www.wattpad.com/926948946-the-last-rocketeer-2-nighttime-visitorsAnd here's the section I was reading from in episode 260: https://www.wattpad.com/930869004-the-last-rocketeer-3-into-the-depths-of-hellThe first part of Chapter 4 is here: https://www.wattpad.com/934519790-the-last-rocketeer-4-in-which-the-proverbialMore coming next week!∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞ Signup for the mailing list for a free special edition podcast, a demo copy of The Thirteenth Hour, and access to retro 80s soundtrack!Like what you see or hear? This week on OCD, Tess is joined by her buddy Pete to review Dave Stevens’ Rocketeer comic. We also review Disney’s “The Rocketeer” movie. Find out why this comic is an incredible art piece and what Dave Stevens has to do with Indiana Jones…and maybe Boba Fett. The Rocketeer, by Dave Stevens, is a rollicking tribute to pulp novels and Saturday morning matinee serials. It follows the high-flying adventures of stunt pilot Cliff Secord and his girlfriend Betty after Cliff finds a mysterious jet pack and takes to the sky. One of the most beloved comic series of all time, The Rocketeer has been completely remastered and is presented here with glorious all-new coloring for the first time.Follow Pete on Instagram!Follow OCD on social media:Instagram - @ocdpodcastTwitter - @ongoingcomicpodFacebook - @ocdpodcastTess’ Instagram - @tessllanosIf you would like to support the show, please leave OCD a 5 Star review on Apple Podcasts and/or you can support OCD at Patreon.com/OCDPodcastThis podcast is part of the BFOP Network.

092 - The Rocketeer with Jason Croxon When you combine certain ingredients such as a dashing hero, a sultry starlet, and a dastardly villain you have the necessary components for a great tale of heroism. The Rocketeer certainly has all that going for it. But we’re not sure why this movie didn’t reach the heights it’s protagonist, Cliff Secord aimed for. Joining us for The Rocketeer is Jason from The CrossFit Bath Podcast Please take a moment to rate us on iTunes and share the show! Disney making a comic book based superhero movie...? What a concept! Back in 1991, it happened. Directed by Joe Johnston, The Rocketeer is based upon the character of the same name created by comic book artist and writer Dave Stevens. That Film Stew's Luke and Damian watched the movie that you most likely haven't. They'll get into all thing Rocketeer - Who is he? What's his deal? Where did he go? And how did Disney handle the superhero who is an homage to the Saturday matinee serial heroes? Set in 1938 Los Angeles, stunt pilot Cliff Secord stumbles upon a hidden rocket powered jet pack that he thereafter uses to fly without the need of an aircraft. His heroic deeds soon attract the attention of Howard Hughes and the FBI, who are hunting for the missing jet pack, as well as the Nazi operatives that stole it from Hughes.

Summary At Hughes Aircraft, Peevy is explaining his reworked design of the X-3 to Howard Hughes. “Just basic aviation,” says Peevy. The office doors swing open. Wooly is berating a handcuffed Cliff Secord. “We’ve got so much on you,” says Wooly, “we’re going to make your life miserable, buddy!” “Good to see you, son,” says […]
Rachelle and Dave are joined by their friend J.Bone to talk about Dave Stevens' The Rocketeer. J is not only a fan, he also has drawn a lot of Rocketeer comics himself, including Rocketeer: Hollywood Horror with Roger Langridge, The Rocketeer and The Spirit with Darwyn Cooke, The Rocketeer at War with Marc Guggenheim and he did the cover and interior illustrations for the prose collection, The Rocketeer: Jet-pack Adventures. So he knows a little something about ol' Cliff Secord. Also in this episode: the first official image of Josh Brolin as Cable, Dave recommends the first issue of Elsewhere from Image Comics, Rachelle recommends The Wendy Project by Melissa Jane Osborne and Veronica Fish, and J recommends old romance comics.
Summary In Eddie Valentine’s office at the South Seas Club, Neville explains that the woman he’s having dinner with is Cliff Secord’s girlfriend. “Good,” says Eddie. “She’ll tell us where Secord is. My boys’ll get the truth out of her in two minutes.” Sinclair leans over Eddie’s desk, face to face with Eddie. “Valentine,” says […]
Summary The air show is underway at Chaplin Field. Cliff rides up on his motorcycle, and notices someone else is flying Miss Mabel. Miss Mabel bounces down the runway and takes off into the morning sky. “… and here to dazzle you with his razor-sharp flying skills,” says the announcer, “is Cliff Secord, the ‘Fearless […]
This week we dive into the world of Dave Stevens' The Rocketeer in the 1991 film directed by Joe Johnston. Starring Bill Campbell as the spitting image of Cliff Secord, a young stunt pilot in the late 1930's, taking on the villainous Nazi spy, Neville Sinclair, charmingly portrayed by Allen's second favorite James Bond, Mr. Timothy Dalton. The film is as family-friendly as it could be, but without once talking down to its audience and never once slipping into being stupid or silly. Also in this episode, we hate the radio and love Jennifer Connelly.Email: fourcolorfilm@gmail.comTwitter: @fourcolorfilmFacebook: facebook.com/fourcolorfilmWebsite: fourcolorfilm.com

[rating:4.5/5] Major Spoilers Poll of the Week We’ve been thinking a lot about death lately – the ending of something that could be the beginning of something else; a time to remember the good times, and the hope that the person has moved on to something better. But comics don’t treat death as a permanent thing. For years readers have seen death become the revolving door in comics; a gimmick, a ploy to part the reader with the money, a sensational event that can be sensationalized across the pages of the few surviving mega newspapers across the country. In short death seems to have lost all meaning for the comic book reader. LINK Discussion: Tokyo Babylon It’s 1991, the last days of Japan’s bubble economy, and money and elegance run through the streets. So do the currents of darkness beneath them, nourishing evil spirits that only the arts of the onmyoji—Japan’s legendary occultists—can combat. The two most powerful onmyojiare in the unlikely guises of a handsome young veterinarian, Seishiro, and the teenage heir to the ancient Sumeragi clan, Subaru.
