With Final Fantasy XVI skipping E3, one of the main topics of discussion is... when will we see it again? But that's not all! Other topics discussed are the new games said to be in development by Hajime Tabata at JP Games and the results of the "The First Solider" Closed Beta survey!
Hajime Tabata departed Square Enix just over a year ago and we felt like it was an apt time to review what happened and see where it's left us As part of this, we're reviewing the legacy of Final Fantasy XV, but also looking at Luminous Studios' output since his departure. And of course, we're taking a look what Tabata has been up to since he left Square Enix! Music this episode is from daigoro789: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZKx5zMHbSrI

With the start of Square Enix's new financial year, there's been plenty of change afoot! It's seen a continuation of the changes we saw at the end of last year when Hajime Tabata left to pursue new ventures, as Hideo Baba (Head of Studio Istolia) has also now resigned from the company. Square Enix have also published more information around the restructure that's seen the business divisions merged, to hopefully make development efforts much more streamlined. Oh, there's a small piece of news too, relating to a large-scale project that YoshiP is working on, that the Final Fantasy VII Remake! On this Thanksgiving episode of Video Games 2 the MAX, Sean Garmer and Marc Morrison discuss quite a few topics, and the games they've been playing heading into the last legs of the year. They begin by talking game sales for last month as Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 proves triumphant over Red Dead Redemption 2. Then, they switch focus to a much longer conversation about Sony skipping E3 2019. What it means for the company and for the Entertainment Software Association that runs E3. Is the PS5 truly on the horizon, and what games could they have to show even if they did an event. They also get into what Microsoft has planned for Scarlett and a rumored upgraded Nintendo Switch too. They also discuss Square-Enix's financial troubles and what it meant for Final Fantasy XV, Hajime Tabata, Shadow of the Tomb Raider. There's elaborations on Mortal Kombat 11 and Diablo 4 being in development. THQ Nordic buying more studios and their lack of marketing for Darksiders 3. Microsoft's X018 event, and much more. Near the end, they go through most of the 2018 Game Awards and give their predictions for who will win at the show. The guys end with talking about the games they've been playing. Sean gushes over Pokemon: Let's Go Pikachu. While Marc has some less than savory things to say about Red Dead Redemption 2. But both guys agree on how good Tetris Effect is though.

Two highly disappointing pieces of news were the focal point of this episode. The departure of Hajime Tabata from Square Enix, which ends the future FF15 DLC plans, and the ill-timed announcement of a Diablo cellphone game at Blizzcon
Shocked doesn't even begin to describe how we're feeling after everything that's happened this week as not only has Hajime Tabata stepped down as the Director/Producer of Final Fantasy XV, he's also quit Square Enix entirely! The majority of the planned DLC episodes for Final Fantasy XV have also been cancelled, with Episode Ardyn the only survivor. It means there's plenty to discuss on this episode; starting with... how did this even happen? Outside of that, there's also a small news segment, with some updates around World of Final Fantasy and Dissidia NT!

Plus: An investigation into why Smash Bros. fans love Super Mario RPG's Geno, Hajime Tabata's shocking resignation, and more!

In this weeks episode of Subs&Dubz, we discuss the situation with Final Fantasy's lead director, Hajime Tabata, stepping down from his position at Square Enix & what FFXV's future is looking like as a result. Also, for our topic of the day, we discuss what each of us thinks needs to be taken into the world of anime and given it's own series. Enjoy! =D

With the recent birth of our second child, Darryl is flying solo this episode... but that doesn't mean there will be any less to discuss as the games as a service topic has raised its head again following an interview with Final Fantasy XV's director Hajime Tabata! Darryl runs through the merits of the approach in relation to Final Fantasy XV, talking about the lessons that can be learnt and applied to future iterations. But it's also about understanding what exactly it means for games to act as a service, as opposed to a standalone packaged offering. In addition, there's also plenty of questions to run-through, including favourite summon mechanics, opinions on the Ultimania Archive guide books and what we think about Caius and Noel as characters!
Alex and John take on an interesting entry in an even more interesting blockbuster series of video games, Final Fantasy XV! They debate topics such, "Was the story good or weird or both?" and "Did we both actually play the same game?" because maybe they didn't? Final Fantasy XV was developed and published by Square Enix and Hajime Tabata is credited as director! To make recommendations tweet us @GMGGMS!

This week, we discuss a recently published interview featuring Hajime Tabata. Tabata discusses the transition between Versus XIII to Final Fantasy XV. We pick apart the interview and discuss the most interesting aspects of it. Kaleb goes unhinged at Hope's incessant need to hear his own voice in Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, and Joe admits he still hasn't touched the game. Enjoy the Grind!
Greetings everyone! Today we've cooked up a doozy of an episode about an undercooked doozy of a game, Final Fantasy XV. Hosts Joe, Kamille, and special guest Justin, discuss the game's many pros and cons in great length. We discuss the game's troubled development cycle, if the game was worth the wait, the controversial patches coming to this game that adds essential story scenes, and even get into a little open-world fatigue talk. Joe and Justin are veterans of the series but Kamille has a fresh perspective on the series as this is her first Final Fantasy playthrough. The game was released on November 29th, 2016 on the Xbox One and PS4 consoles. It was directed by Hajime Tabata, and the music was composed by Yoko Shimomura.  We open with a pretty long spoiler-free section so if you haven't played the game feel free to listen without worry. After that we dive head first into our Story Mode (patent pending), which is just a mine field of spoilers everywhere you step, so be warned. We also dedicate a section to a certain post game dungeon that everyone should experience fresh... If you wanna see more of Justin, and you should, follow him on twitter @truezeldafan. If you'd like the reach Joe, he can be found @RevenantThings. Kamille is @LadyOddity. Our co-host, George, who wasn't on this episode can be found @Geogenesis999. Hajime Tabata, who is of course the director of Final Fantasy XV, has been talking about the game's story. Specifically, he's talking about what they were looking to accomplish in terms of its focus and its depth. In a separate interview, Tabata also spoke about what he wants to do now that Final Fantasy XV has been launched. He recalled a conversation he had with series creator, Sakaguchi! We've also got some news about various games, like Mobius and the Final Fantasy VII Remake, as well as some questions from the community!

This time, we review the newest of the Final Fantasy XV films; Kingsglaive Final Fantasy XV. Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV Development History Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV is a 2016 computer animated fantasy anime film directed by Takeshi Nozue, written by Takashi Hasegawa, and produced by good ole Hajime Tabata. The film was developed by Visual Works, Square Enix’s CGI studio. The film is obviously connected to the Fabula Nova Crystallis subseries, and is meant to get everyone ready for Final Fantasy XV. Kingsglaive was created as part of the multimedia rollout of Final Fantasy XV. The film began production in 2014 by the same team that brought us Advent Children. Kingsglaive uses discarded stuff from the original story, while creating a separate experience and plot. Square Enix brought in multiple external studios into complete the project in time. Plot/Setting The story takes place on the world of Eos. This planet is divided into multiple nations that each once held magical crystals. Sound familiar?! The kingdom of Lucis is currently the only nation that still has a crystal. They use it to defend themselves via a gigantic magic barrier. The crystal holds special powers, ie magic, and is only accessible through the Ring of the Lucii, which is passed down from monarch to monarch. Recently, the militaristic empire of Niflheim has been conquering nearby nations, and is currently at war with Lucis. Lucis is protected by the Kingsglaive, an elite unit that uses the royal family’s magic powers. Kingsglaive starts out with King Regis accepting terms of peace from Niflheam. Regis must cede the territories around the crown city Insomnia to Niflheim, and marry prince Noctis to Lunafreya, the former princess of Tenebrae. Another place that we have no context of… lol. Just yesterday Kotaku released an article about "Final Fantasy Disease," which, according to Final Fantasy XV director Hajime Tabata, prevents both fans and Square employees from accepting any changes in a storied franchise. What do you think about that? How do you balance the desire to do something new with the long, beloved history of a popular gaming franchise? These are pretty deep questions, but the Talking Games boys are ready to tackle them -- plus Kellen talks a lot about Doom. Thanks to our sponsors for this episode, Cards Against Humanity -- and thanks to the Chicago Podcast Coop for hooking it up! Hey, the Nerdologues are on Patreon! Help us make more cool stuff!

Making-of Crisis Core began development as a PSP port of the FInal Fantasy VII Mobile Phone Japan-only game “Before Crisis”. Hajime Tabata, event Director for Monster Rancher 2, and the creator of “Before Crisis” was chosen as director of the port. It would also be produced by Hideki Imaizumi, the score by Takeharu Ishimoto, written by Kazushige Nojima, and art designed by Yoshihiro Imaizumi. Soon into production of the port, however, when it was decided that the port was going to center around the mythical character of Zack, they opted to create a brand-new game instead. They titled this new project “Before Crisis Core” and eventually shortened it to “Crisis Core”, and drew upon the artwork and back story left over from the development of Final Fantasy VII. Despite having plenty of backstory for FF7 filled in with this game, they initially wanted to include more, but were restricted by the size of the PSP’s UMD’s. Much of Cloud’s involvement was cut in order to focus the game on Zack. The game's antagonist, Genesis, was brought over from the development of Dirge of Cerberus, and made the main baddie, in an attempt to cohesively connect the games. That and the Rock Star voice actor, “Gackt”, wanted a bigger role, so Producer Hideki Imaizumi gave him one. The team behind Crisis Core had some hurdles to get over in development. With Zack as the main protagonist, the regular “RPG” style of gameplay wasn’t going to work, and so they opted for a more fluid Action style of gameplay, with little exploration. There was some fear that such a departure from traditional gameplay and leveling would alienate fans, as well as concern over retconning certain elements of Final Fantasy 7. Square, at this time, was receiving a lot of backlash over the Animated short film, Last Order, and were trying to make up for it. Too late into development, the team realized that the player’s inability to skip cutscenes was a huge oversight that they couldn’t fix, and the luck-based leveling, meant to keep gameplay from growing stale, had its problems as well. Despite all this, Crisis Core’s demo was released in 2006 at Jump festa, and in may of 2007 Tabata stated that the game was 90% complete (Tabata loves his percentages). In september of that year, Crisis Core was released to Japanese audiences, and in the spring of 2008 it made its way to western shores. Note that 2007 would have been the 10th anniversary for FF7, and a lot was made of Crisis Core and other projects of Square’s Compilation of Final Fantasy VII, the others being Before Crisis, the shooter Dirge of Cerberus (our next game), and the CGI movie Advent Children. Crisis Core would be released with a bang, well reviewed by most (metacritic has it at 83/100), it ended up being the 6th biggest selling PSP game ever, selling 3.1 million copies worldwide. It’s definitely one of the more successful FInal Fantasy Sequels/Prequels, praised for its focus on the Final Fantasy VII backstory, although faulted sometimes for it’s DMW or “randomized as hell limit break system” RAHLBS, it remains a beloved addition to the FFVII universe, and has been called one of the most tear-inducing game of all time. Story Crisis core takes place 7 years before the events of FFVII, and focuses the story around a Shinra Soldier named Zack Fair, as he explores the dark roots and experiments of Genetically modified Soldiers like himself. It begins with Zack and his mentor Angeal being dispatched to support the Shinra war against the nation of Wutai, during which Angeal disappeared. Later it’s “revealed” that Angeal and another soldier named Genesis, have somehow betrayed shinra, and Zack and Sephiroth are sent to kill him. At this point, Genesis and a dude named Dr. Hollander, throw a clone army Shinra’s way. Sephiroth attacks Genesis, and Zack goes off to find Hollander. Angeal, however, stops Zack from killing Hollander by knocking him into the abyss, as Hollander must be kept alive if they are to have any hope in finding a cure from being turned into a monster, something that happens when potential Soldiers are exposed to too much of Jenova’s genetic Material, an amount had by both Genesis and Angeal, as well as Sephiroth. Zack wakes up, having fallen into Aerith’s church, and they spend some quality time together while Zack heals. When Zack returns to the ever-being-attacked Shinra building, he is convinced to side with his friend Angeal, who has become disillusioned with Genesis. But once again, Angeal disappears, and Zack is ordered somewhere new, Modeoheim, where Genesis was last seen. On route he meets a young Cloud Strife, and their brief friendship begins. Zack does end up fighting Genesis, but Genesis throws himself into a Mako Reactor in the end. On that same trip, Zack finds Angeal is fusing with his own clones, being overtaken by the monster inside of him, and eventually Zack is forced to kill him, inheriting his mentor’s sword in the wake of his death. After all of this, despite the fact that Genesis’s clones still fight Shinra, Angeal’s have become some sort of protector for Zack and Aerith. Still in search of answers ;regarding Genesis’s whereabouts, Zack, Sephiroth, and shinra troops that include Cloud, go to investigate the Nibelheim Reactor. And it’s here that Sephiroth finds out about the experiments that created him, and he goes absolutely fucking nuts, destroys a town, and attempts to take Jenova’s body. Zack fails to stop him, and in a crazy feat of strength, after being stabbed by a huge fucking sword, Cloud throws Sephiroth into the lifestream below the reactor. Later, Zack finds himself and a very weakened Cloud in Hojo’s lab, as part of the Jenova experiments. So he freaks out, takes cloud, and gets the fuck out of there. This causes Shinra to pursue Zack and Cloud ruthlessly (Cloud, because he’s the last experiment to hold Sephiroth’s cells, who is the one who reacted with the most stability with Jenova’s cells). Hollander tries to get Cloud, but Zack makes quick work of him, and aligns himself with Dr. Lazard, who is turning into an Angeal Clone, and sends Zack to go to Banora to defeat Genesis. After a super-monstrous Genesis is killed, Zack returns to Cloud and finds a note from Aerith that revealed a 4 year gap that took place between the incidents at Nibelheim, and him waking in Hojo’s lab. With Shinra in hot pursuit, Zack attempts to flee with cloud, and ends up sacrificing himself for cloud in leigh of hundreds of attacking shinra troops. Shinra leaves without cleaning up the scene, and Zack shares his last moments with Cloud, and like Angeal once gave him the Buster sword, so to does Zack pass the sword to Cloud. Although we covered a fair amount of news from Tokyo Game Show 2015 during our special episode, Hajime Tabata continued to reveal new information following the event. Darryl, Lauren and Jared do a not-so-quick round-up of this, discussing why people were so attached to Stella and what other potential content cuts mean for the game. Outside of this, we wanted to do a feature to talk about who some of our favourite Final Fantasy characters are. Each of the hosts were tasked with choosing one character who they felt represented something strong and good about the franchise, with the idea being that they would make a case for why that character deserves to be treasured as one of their favourites. We hope you enjoy it, as we get a little emotional at points. Music this episode is provided by a YouTuber called RebeccaETripp, who did a wonderful arrangement of the music that plays while in the Salikawood.
Square Enix pretty much rendered half of Kingdom Hearts Union 83 redundant, but we're here with a special episode to give you all the info on Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 and Final Fantasy XV! Yes, pretty much straight off, Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 was announced during the Sony Press Conference, but things didn't stop there. We had a new trailer for Final Fantasy XV, a new game announcement in the form of Final Fantasy Type-0 Online and of course, there was the Final Fantasy XV Active Time Report with Hajime Tabata. Darryl is joined by Branden as they run through all of the pressing concerns and information that was detailed (albeit in a slightly condensed form for some topics), perfect for catching up on Square Enix's interests at this year's Tokyo Game Show.
We had something of a news explosion this episode, with both Gamescom and PAX Prime throwing up plenty of topics for discussion. The main point is that Hajime Tabata has declared that Final Fantasy XV will release in 2016! We also delve into the Dawn trailer and give our thoughts, while also discussing how Tabata is steering the ship! That's not all though, as we have a few questions from the community this episode. It gives us the chance to talk about the newly launched Triple Triad, the infamous Final Fantasy X~Will and X-2.5, as well as the importance of vocal themes. We hope you enjoy the episode, which is rounded out by a cover of Terra's theme by YouTuber Josiah McDaniel.
It's the landmark 50th episode of the South Figaro Podcast! We began this podcast talking about Final Fantasy XV, it's only fair we celebrate the anniversary of South Figaro by talking about Final Fantasy XV....too bad it's not under more favorable circumstances. Vagrant Winds sighs heavily along with me over the unbelievably poor showing of FFXV at this year's Gamescom, while also pondering just how much of this is the fault of director Hajime Tabata and what needs to be done in order to turn things around in the game's troubled marketing (as if its development woes weren't bad enough).
There have been some Final Fantasy XV bombshells since the last episode, as Hajime Tabata took to the stage in the latest Active Time Report to share some details about the game's development. There was a primary focus around the story and we now know that Stella Nox Fleuret has been cut from the game and replaced by Lunafreya. Nojima's role has also changed and some of the initial scenes shown off when the game was Final Fantasy Versus XIII have also been cut. It means there is plenty to talk about and that's without even getting into the other news (Episode Duscae 2.0) and the return of the quiz!
It's all going on with Final Fantasy at the moment and Square Enix in general! Not only has it been announced that there will be a Square Enix press conference at E3 2015, there was also a super special edition of the Active Time Report. In this episode we discuss both topics with some significant detail. To that end, there is detailed coverage about the feedback that has been collected from Episode Duscae and Hajime Tabata also alluded to the fact that we might be seeing Episode Duscae 2.0. We also have a bit of news from the wider Final Fantasy universe thrown in too for good measure, making it a pretty extensive episode!
Final Fantasy XV Is 60 Percent Finished The new Gold Saucer will bring chocobo racing from Final Fantasy VII, Triple Triad from Final Fantasy VIII, and a bunch of other mini-games and activities. Final Fantasy XIV patch 2.51 is due out next week, on 24 February. During camping, players will be able to have their party eat meals cooked by Ignis, the driver and chef of the group. Eating will give status buffs and other effects to aid in the party's travels. 'Final Fantasy Type-0 HD' Gets Rather Bleak In New Trailer What you may have noticed about the video, which was from the recent Active Time Report Page 4.0 broadcast, is that its somewhat choppy in places and seems to jitter and jumper a bit. Well the game’s director, Hajime Tabata, has since mentioned that the demo build of the game won’t reach 1080p and won’t even be running at 30 frames per second. you'll be able to save and load your progress. As reported by Nova Crystallis, Square Enix announced at the Taipei Game Show over the weekend it has partnered up with XPEC. XPEC is a Taiwanese company that will help finish off developing Final Fantasy XV. Final Fantasy XV director, Hajime Tabata, said it was important to collaborate with XPEC. He described the game as a “large scale project” and it was necessary to have XPEC there to help them finish off its development. XPEC themselves explained it was an honor to work on a project like Final Fantasy XV. They said most of the staff are big fans of the Final Fantasy series. XPEC were responsible for working on the train station level that was revealed over the weekend. They couldn’t show much footage though as they are heavily involved with the second half of the game. Honors to the best games of 2014 won’t be the only thing handed out at the 15th Annual Game Developers Choice Awards on Wednesday, March 4 in San Francisco, with Final Fantasy Creator Hironobu Sakaguchi set to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to the world of gaming.Meggan Scavio, General Manager of all GDC events, talked about Sakaguchi: Over his illustrious and thriving career, Sakaguchi-san has established some of the most successful entertainment franchises of all time, and helped cement the RPG genre in Japan and around the world. But the gaming world owes an even greater debt to Sakaguchi-san and team for making a compelling game narrative as important to game development as its graphics and sound. Final Fantasy helped pave the way for game stories that dealt with death, regret and character development in a mature and significant way, and we’re proud to honor Sakaguchi-san as a true leader in the space, and an inspired game developer. During a livestream from the Tokaigi Japan Game Party, Producer and Director Naoki Yoshida appeared to tease an upcoming Xbox One port of the game by holding up an Xbox One controller. While of the course the controller is compatible with the PC version of the game, it was never used during the demonstration. Additionally, Yoshida-san has previously explained that while Square Enix was ready to work on an Xbox One version of the game, it would only do so once Microsoft allowed cross-platform gameplay. He even went so far as mentioning the possibility of having servers with only Windows and Xbox One gamers. With Microsoft recently announcing cross-platform play, perhaps this is the sign that we will soon hear about FF XIV’s Xbox One release. Tactics: Here are a few quick pointers for racing the Chocobo Trainer on its highest difficulty: If you are trying to get the sun sigil, you will need to finish this race with a time UNDER 0.0 seconds. I have had a race time that finished at exactly 0.0 seconds and I only won a shitty item. In order to achieve this time you need to shoot to get between 12 and 15 balloons, while only getting hit once or twice if you are fast enough to the finish. It's very difficult but these tips will help you. And remember, use the DPad, it makes maneuvering your chocobo a little easier. Also remember that if you run into an invisible "wall" it will cause your chocobo to make a hard turn back on course. This is sometimes useful when you need a quick dodge. The first ramp like area will try and trick you into thinking you can pickup a balloon or two by moving left. DONT do it! This will cause the trainer to move ahead of you and you won't get a single balloon. Instead stay right, as your goal is to gather a couple balloons and be in front of the trainer as you round the corner. Being ahead of the trainer as you round the corner will cause most of the birds to target the trainer. This helps free you up to gather more balloons without the risk of getting hit yourself. It is very important that you attempt to stay to the right as much as possible, as moving more to the center or left will cause the birds to start targeting you. It is also important to note that while there are some sets of birds that target the trainer while you are in the lead, some will aim for you regardless. These usually give you enough time to dodge them if you are paying attention. During the second turn, try to stay to the right as you head into the final leg of the race. This last stretch is where a bit of luck comes in as the birds are a little more unpredictable. If you stay the right you will have a better chance of avoiding the birds, but the balloons are scattered all over the place. Only make very calculated attempts at collecting balloons in this last area as you can be hit multiole times in a matter of seconds and end a promising run. A last bit of advice, if there are a few balloons in a row at the very end of the race on the left hand side, you can attempt to collect them as the birds don't always have the time to fly into this area. It can be dangerous getting over here so only do it is you need that last balloon or two to get your target time. Good Luck!
