This week the gang are talking JRPGs, or Japanese role-playing games to use words. Does a game have to be made in Japan to be a JRPG? Or does it just need bright colours and turn-based battles? We seek to understand the true meaning of the genre by stumbling over dozens of games and deciding whether or not they’re allowed into the JRPG treehouse. Katharine reckons if it isn’t made in Japan, it can get out. Adam thinks the US-made Anachronox counts. The Pokédex is finished, by the by. Stephen transitions into the world of mecha with Titanfall 2, while Austen is less than impressed with Dishonored 2 so he settled into a couple of adventure games with King's Quest (2014 - 16) and Telltale's Batman.Stephen picks up the baton for Whatcha Watchin' with a report on the CW's great superhero show crossover, while Donald has been feeling a fair bit of despair lately so he settled down with a Funimation trial and watched Danganronpa 3. Thanksgiving dinner and its accompanying hawk (We'll explain) are done with, so John and Chris settle back into the groove by discussing their early impressions of Final Fantasy XV, their overall impressions of its tie-in CG film Kingsglaive, and per Chris's recommendation, all their reasons why Dreamworks' popular Kung Fu Panda films have turned out surprisingly great. Spoilers abound for both Kingsglaive and all three Panda films, though in the former case, you're not missing all that much. We don't actually give traditional overviews for the series in this particular review either, instead focusing on what elements of the writing and animation make it so special to us. Video Game Movie Anatomy hosts break down Video Game inspired movies to answer the age old question: DO GAMES MAKE GOOD MOVIES?!?! In today's episode, hosts Mark Donica, Stacey Shuttleworth and Patrick Dees discuss Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV! Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV is a 2016 Japanese computer-animated anime film directed by Takeshi Nozue and scripted by Takashi Hasegawa from a story by Saori Itamuro and Kazushige Nojima. Developed primarily by Square Enix's dedicated CGI studio Visual Works, Kingsglaive is based on the setting and story of the 2016 video game Final Fantasy XV, which is thematically connected to the Fabula Nova Crystallis subseries. Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV released theatrically in July 2016 in Japan by Aniplex, and received a limited theatrical run in August in North America by Stage 6 Films. Commercial physical and digital versions released in October 2016. It will also be bundled in different editions of Final Fantasy XV alongside fellow s
This time on a very special episode of Square Roots we combine with Owen Choules from Classic Schmassic, Voltron-style, to form a super cool robot called Classic Roots! Its mission: to look at the feature film created as a prequel for the release of Final Fantasy XV, called Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV. We have so many questions, and even more inappropriate nicknames for the only slightly overweight Libertus. Questions like: Who are these people? Is this set before or during Final Fantasy XV? Where are all the chocobos? Why does that one guy have a super long sleeve? And why does he look like Tom Baker? Can this movie have only one female character at a time? Are giant statues smashing up a city cool? Judge for yourself, rent the movie, and then let us know what you think as we all prep for the release of Final Fantasy XV! Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV certainly has some big names behind it, with the likes of Aaron Paul, Lena Heady, and Sean Bean lending their prestigious talents to the voice cast, but does Kingsglaive hold up as both a movie and an introduction to the highly anticipated game?
This time, we review the newest of the Final Fantasy XV films; Kingsglaive Final Fantasy XV. Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV Development History Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV is a 2016 computer animated fantasy anime film directed by Takeshi Nozue, written by Takashi Hasegawa, and produced by good ole Hajime Tabata. The film was developed by Visual Works, Square Enix’s CGI studio. The film is obviously connected to the Fabula Nova Crystallis subseries, and is meant to get everyone ready for Final Fantasy XV. Kingsglaive was created as part of the multimedia rollout of Final Fantasy XV. The film began production in 2014 by the same team that brought us Advent Children. Kingsglaive uses discarded stuff from the original story, while creating a separate experience and plot. Square Enix brought in multiple external studios into complete the project in time. Plot/Setting The story takes place on the world of Eos. This planet is divided into multiple nations that each once held magical crystals. Sound familiar?! The kingdom of Lucis is currently the only nation that still has a crystal. They use it to defend themselves via a gigantic magic barrier. The crystal holds special powers, ie magic, and is only accessible through the Ring of the Lucii, which is passed down from monarch to monarch. Recently, the militaristic empire of Niflheim has been conquering nearby nations, and is currently at war with Lucis. Lucis is protected by the Kingsglaive, an elite unit that uses the royal family’s magic powers. Kingsglaive starts out with King Regis accepting terms of peace from Niflheam. Regis must cede the territories around the crown city Insomnia to Niflheim, and marry prince Noctis to Lunafreya, the former princess of Tenebrae. Another place that we have no context of… lol. The series was co-produced by A-1 Pictures, and obviously Square Enix. A-1 also helped Square Enix with the On the Way to a Smile animated film. The setting and story are based on the upcoming Final Fantasy XV, which is still connected to the Fabula Nova Crystallis subseries. The series documents events and details of the main characters of Final Fantasy XV, and was originally announced during Uncovered: Final Fantasy XV on March 30th 2016. We all know that Brotherhood, combined with Kingsglaive, is part of a multimedia rollout of Final Fantasy XV. They chose this format because they didn’t feel like creating additional games to cover the added story content. They ended up going with the anime format due to Kingsglaive already in the works. Breakdown: This week the usual crew gets dropped off for a fun reunion of writing talents from IrrationalPassions.com. Jacob Bryant and Jarrett Green make a triumphant return while up-and-coming Logan Wilkinson sits down with Alex for an IP to remember. In games we have that long hard talk about final fantasy movies, most specifically Kingsglaive. It’s bad. But sooooo good. We also Deus Ex and go into ReCore with some PS2 flavor on top. Jarrett also touches in on Honor and indies. We break into some discussion topics: game delays, empathy, what we’re writing, and where we were three years ago. In the mailsack we play a game, take some tweets, and talk about writing challenges... and wrestling, I guess. That’s the show! Let’s take some bets. Featured: Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV, Final Fantasy XIV, Don’t Breathe, Soma, Stranger Things, Gods Will Be Watching, Brigador, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Castlevania: Rondo of Blood / Dracula X Chronicles, Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia, Hitman, Xbox Play Anywhere, Overwatch
We discuss Final Fantasy XV: Kingsglaive, what we thought and what the implications on XV could be. We try to look at the movie from multiple angles and give our honest opinions.
It's another grab-bag style week as Sean and Jonathan talk about various bits of media – including Kingsglaive, the Final Fantasy XV tie-in movie, and ReCore, the new exclusive for Xbox One – before diving into some news and analyzing Sony's recent unveiling of the PlayStation 4 Pro. Did their announcement truly clarify the confusion around this mysterious project, and what does this mean for the future of gaming? And for our final topic, we look back to gaming's past by offering a retrospective of the Nintendo Gamecube, which celebrated its 15th anniversary on September 14th. What are our favorite games and memories from this weird little purple box?
This week the boys talk about Haylie Duff's exciting new gig, what Rebecca Black is doing, Ni No Kuni 2's sparse details, Cyberpunk 2077's development, VR's lackluster sales, Mario on iPhone, the PS4 Pro, Mass Effect's newest footage, Booster Gold's absence from the DCEU, Deathstroke's inclusion and some weird commissions for artists. Then after the break (1:10:00) they review the Final Fantasy XV extended universe content, from Episode Duscae all the way to the feature length movie Kingsglaive. Questions? Comments?

The Final Fantasy Series, Part 2 In this episode: The Final Fantasy series has lots of sequels and spinoffs that aren’t part of the mainline, numbered series. There are some sequels, some movies, and some mashups like Kingdom Hearts that just take the FF characters and give them a new world to explore together. Some are good and some (like the new Justice Monsters 5) are total garbage. But which are which? (Hint: The new Kingsglaive movie is awesome.) We discuss our thoughts on Final Fantasy MMOs, and the gist of it is that both of us wish they had called them Final Fantasy Online instead of mainline numbered games. We have played both FFXI and FFXIV, and XIV felt more like a Final Fantasy game, even though it being an MMORPG made it so that the story couldn’t be anywhere near as compelling as the single-player installments. Do the old-school Final Fantasy games (I-VI) hold up to modern standards? Some of them really do! But which ones? Bwahahahah, listen to find out! We both love love love the remasters and re-releases of the series. More people get to play the amazing games on whatever system they want, either on a new console like the Playstation Vita, iOS or Android, or even PC through services like Steam. Plus, we’re fans of all the HD textures and new sprites/animations. It’s a win-win for us (and for you folks who’ve never played them before!) Our Least Favorite Final Fantasy? III all the way. Not the Final Fantasy III that was released on the SNES (that was actually VI, but III with the poorly paced story, the crippled job system, and the terrible player messaging that kept you unable to progress. Avoid it at all costs (unless you’re a completionist like Void) Our Favorite Final Fantasy, though? IX all the way. But we also have fondness for VIII for the best opening scene of any FF (link below) and V because it wasn’t translated into English for so long that it took effort and dedication to play. Favorite Villain for us? This is a tough one. You’ll hear about it when you listen! But just so you know...Exdeath from FFV, well, he’s a tree. For serious. Favorite characters? Again, a totally tough question, but it has changed over the years. Vivi is a constant from FFIX, but there are others we talk about, too. Favorite Scenes? The opera FFVI ‘Maria and Draco’ (Aria di Mezzo Carattere), The Ending to FFIX when Garnet is Queen and they do “I Want to Be Your Canary” again and then Zidane and Garnet are reunited, and The Opening to FFVIII (Liberi Fatali). Where is the best place to start for newbies to FF series? (asked by @chrisevans17 and @DestenLee on Twitter). Probably FFX for the overall experience, but we go into lots of others for various reasons, all depending on your tastes in gaming. But the biggest surprise? Not Final Fantasy VII. Never FFVII first. And we’ll tell you why. – A qué estamos jugando: Castle of Illusion, beta de Battlefield 1 y Plantas vs Zombies: Garden Warfare 2. – Noticias: Nintendo Direct. – Interludio musical: Ken Theme (Street Fighter V) – Charla sobre Kingsglaive: FF XV (con La Capital Olvidada) – Despedida. La entrada EBP 2×30 – Nintendo Direct, impresiones de Battlefield 1, Kingsglaive: FF XV y más aparece primero en El Batallón Pluto.

We're breaking the rules this week and publishing the podcast a day early! But it's for a good reason, some of us are attending a Kingsglaive premiere tomorrow, so we wouldn't be around :( It's good news though, as you get to hear all about what it was like to attend the First Breath Kingdom Hearts concert! Not only was Nomura in attendance, but the music sounded absolutely amazing and yes, there were lots of tears! We're also joined a Patreon supporter this episode and there's some questions from the community about some interesting details. One of which relates to the mysterious voice that speaks to Sora and Roxas during tutorials in the first two games.
It's all Final Fantasy XV today as Peter, Alexa, and Matt discuss the game's delay, new footage, and the Kingsglaive film. Mostly spoiler free (except for a certain purple creature...)!
Final Fantasy Union is back for Episode 120, but it's not the usual hosts running the show this time around! Branden has invaded and he's joined by Jared to discuss Final Fantasy XV, as Lauren and Darryl are on holiday. The featured topic revolves around Final Fantasy XV being make or break for the franchise and it focusses on three main areas: use of technology, overall experience and how it challenges the status quo. We also have some news for you guys, relating to the release of Final Fantasy IX on Steam and some info about Kingsglaive's release and the production of more Ultimate Collector's Editions for Final Fantasy XV! Enjoy!
Final Fantasy XV Predictions III By Kaleb Schweiss As we all know, Square Enix has sprayed a shoopuff sized load of Final Fantasy XV content onto our eagerly awaiting faces. From a hyper CG film directed by Takeshi Nozue, the man who brought us Advent Children, to a new Final Fantasy XV Demo titled “Final Fantasy XV: Platinum Demo”. But first, let’s start off with Brotherhood: Final Fantasy XV. Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV. As all of us who watched Final Fantasy XV: Uncovered know, Sean Bean, Lena Headey, and Aaron Paul are behind three of the biggest voices of the film. The film will feature King Regis and his Kingsglaive, or Kingsguard…., as they fight off the evil empire of Niflheim, who is advancing ever deeper into the kingdom of Lucis. They are, naturally, after the crystal that is housed here. Regis is essentially forced to secede his lands outside the capital, and send his son to wed the uber hot Lunafreya, a princess of Tenebrae, and captive of the Niflheim. It essentially looks like a little more back story for FF XV, centered around King Regis, rather than Noctis. It is set to take place just after Noctis leaves to wet his whick on ole Lunafreya. Kingsglaive doesn’t have an official release date, but it will be available sometime before September 30th. Brotherhood: Final Fantasy XV is a five episode, completely original animated short. It delves further into the relationships between Noctis and his friends, and sets up the story for Final Fantasy XV. This will be a free to view series, and the first episode is up on YouTube. It is said that this series will follow Noctis from childhood on. Here’s the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fsVhwsUFaDE Thoughts on episode 1 of brotherhood? Platinum Demo: Final Fantasy XV This demo is a free to download game that features a dream within child Noctis. The “storyline” explored will be unique to Platinum Demo, and players who complete the demo will receive the Carbuncle summon for the full game. The demo essentially showcases the battle system. It shows us young Noctis, with squeaky hammer in hand, as he figures out the important things in life, such as driving, and destroying his enemies… seeing them driven before him, and the lamentation of the women!!!!! Well, sort of. You also unlock magic in this demo, and get to play as adult Noctis to take on the formiddable Iron Giant at the end of the demo. Thoughts on Platinum Demo: Final Fantasy XV? Some final mentions -Still considering PC release -Airship car thing will be fully controllable, and obtained near end of 1game -Square may produce more Ultimate….Editions of FFXV, for the 99 percent of us who couldn’t get one. - FF XV will feature Justice Monsters Five, a pinball-style FF monster reference game. There will be various locations to play this game, so you shouldn’t have a hard time accessing the minigame. -There are over 200 quests in the game so far, ranging from story missions to chocobo racing. - Weapons can be improved by collecting materials from the world, and battles. Ability points will be obtained once you level up. REMIX: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=951CjSrLd5M
The dust has now settled from Uncovered: Final Fantasy XV and we thought it'd be the perfect time to do a special episode so you guys didn't have to wait two weeks to hear our thoughts! Darryl is joined by Branden for this episode due to their special connections with Uncovered. We were also hoping to get Churro on the show too (as he sat pretty much next to Sakaguchi), but he was unfortunately not available For Final Fantasy Union, it was immense. We were featured heavily during the pre-show thanks to our event a few weeks ago. Lauren was also the first interview they played during this segment, so it was pretty surreal! Branden was also featured in the pre-event thanks to his art. He was the first fan artist show during the calendar segment, with his drawing representing the month of November. For the show itself, we talk about everything from the release date of Final Fantasy XV, to Kingsglaive, to Brotherhood, to theme songs, to collector's editions! We hope you enjoy it!
