Sabina Nawaz: You're the Boss Sabina Nawaz is an executive coach who advises C-level executives and teams at Fortune 500 corporations, government agencies, nonprofits, and academic institutions. During her 14-year tenure at Microsoft, she went from managing software development teams to leading the company's executive development and succession planning efforts for over 11,000 managers and nearly a thousand executives, advising Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer directly. She's the author of You're the Boss: Become the Manager You Want to Be (and Others Need)*. Every leader I know intends to be authentic. Unfortunately, we sometimes use authenticity as an excuse not to do the critical work of calibrating our actions. In this conversation, Sabina and I discuss how to avoid that trap so we can show up more genuinely for others. Key Points “Yeah, but…” signals justification and holds us back from what we most need to learn. Your success comes despite unhelpful traits, not because of them. Pure authenticity is a complete fallacy. Authenticity is not singular. We sometimes use authenticity as an excuse not to do the important work of calibrating our actions. Don't let the smokescreen of past “authenticity” get in the way of growth. Authenticity is not static. Reading your old past social media posts will remind you of this. When shifting, start with small experiments to nudge you in a new direction. Language that may be warning signs of the authenticity trap: “That's just how I am.” “I'm not the kind of person who…” “I'm not being true to myself if…” “That's the way I've always done things, and it's worked for me.” Resources Mentioned You're the Boss: Become the Manager You Want to Be (and Others Need)* by Sabina Nawaz Interview Notes Download my interview notes in PDF format (free membership required). Episode 123: Small Steps Are Still Steps (Part One).Episode 124: Tiny Changes, Remarkable Results (Part Two). Why is it matter if you set intentions in your life?Episode 7: Replace Setting Resolutions With Setting IntentionsEpisode 48: Pick Your Word. Power Up Your New Year!Last week I talked about how much habits are tied into our core beliefs about ourselves. "It's hard to change your habits if you never change the underlying beliefs that led to your past behavior. You have a new goal and a new plan, but you haven't changed who you are."- James ClearSo before you listen in today and get the framework for how to change your behaviors and take those small steps that are going to create big changes in your life…make sure you have gotten really clear about what you core values are. What is most important to you? What kind of person are you striving to become? Are you ready to start a new chapter in your life? Let's go.The 4 Laws of Behavior Change (Framework for building good habits and breaking bad ones) #1 Make It Obvious (Cues & Environment)-Environment matters most when intentionally shaping our actions.-Being obvious means being specific.-Being obvious means giving yourself cues that trigger your desire to do the habit you want. #2 Make It Attractive (Craving & Desire)-How can you make the habits you want to incorporate into your life more attractive and desirable? -What are habits you are already doing that you love that you can stack a new habit onto?-We imitate the habits of the close (family, friends), many (social norms), and powerful (influencers, leaders). Surround yourself with people who have the habits you want. #3 Make It Easy (Reduce Friction)-We naturally choose the path of least resistance. So let's use this tendency to our advantage in forming new habits! -Start with one habit at a time so it doesn't feel overwhelming. -Start with the two minute rule, set a timer and cut yourself off after doing whatever the habit is for 2min. -Start with habits that come naturally easy to you.#4 Make It Satisfying (Reinforcement & Reward)-Think about what brings you joy, what gets you excited, what feels like FUN to you and what motivates you. Then how can you use those rewards in your habit system? If you are wanting to break a habit INVERSE THE 4 LAWSMake it invisible (Remove cues). Make it unattractive (Reframe mindset).Make it difficult (Increase friction), make it so you have to put more effort in.Make it unsatisfying (Add accountability). Final Alli thoughts.1. Do you have a goal to climb a mountain but... your day to day looks more like watching tv from the couch?Listen, it turns out you can shift your personality to actually become the person who can reach these really awesome high goals we set for ourselves.Shannon Sauer-Zavala is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, and she works with people to actually shift their personalities away from anxiety and depression and toward their goals. And did you know those all the rage personality tests are not much more reliable than a Facebook poll? Seriously. Shannon tells us about the one that matters, the Big 5. It's basically the gist of the totality of human beings boiled down to 5 overarching traits.I know, I know, you're dying to know what they are. Bear with me because these words totally need publicist; neuroticism, extrovertism, agreeableness vs. antagonism, conscientiousness vs. disinhibition, and openness. These mumbo jumbo sciency words describe specific tendencies that make up personality and really guide what we are capable of doing. And guess what? Personality is not static. Actually, Shannon says it gets better with age! Finally, a reason to look forward to the next birthday and stop all this anti-aging bull sh*t!!! Shannon and I had a great discussion about these 5 traits and what it takes to move the bar to reach those goals! Surprise, surprise, it has a lot to do with your thoughts! Which - spoiler alert - aren't facts. They are just things you tell yourself. So if you start little by little telling yourself different stuff, you can actually change your behavior AND your personality.Don't be fooled and put into a box by personality tests or old habits. You can shift, change, and become whoever you want to be! How cool is that? What's Inside:How reliable are today's common personality tests? What are the Big 5?Can your personality really change!?What's holding you back from your goals and how to push past it.Finally we get some validation that we actually get BETTER with age, I mean as far as our personality goes. What personality shifts would you need to make to reach that next big goal? “Your call is very important to us.” That is just one of many phrases businesses use trying to convince us how customer-focused they are. Do these phrases work, or do they backfire? This episode begins with an exploration. Source: Michael Maslansky author of The Language Of Trust (https://amzn.to/3Wz2IQP). When you walk into a church, it affects you. You feel different than when you walk into a baseball stadium or a restaurant or office or a grocery store. The environment you are in right now affects your behavior your thoughts and your feelings. I am certain you have experienced this but likely never thought a lot about it. That is why Kevin Ervin Kelley is here. Kevin is an award-winning architect who designs stores and offices and other spaces and has studied how rooms and spaces impact people for better or worse. Kevin is author of the book Irreplaceable: How to Create Extraordinary Places that Bring People Together (https://amzn.to/3UALlwE). While you learn about the big historical events in school, history is filled with lesser known stories that will fascinate you. You are about to hear stories of the disastrous opening day at Disneyland; how Abraham Lincoln was only one of several murder targets the night he was shot; the weird marriage of AOL and Time-Warner and more. Here to tell those stories is Michael Farquhar. He is a former writer and editor at The Washington Post and author of several books including Bad Days in History: A Gleefully Grim Chronicle of Misfortune, Mayhem, and Misery for Every Day of the Year (https://amzn.to/3wjKCrF) and More Bad Days in History (https://amzn.to/3QE5q3V). “You have the right to remain silent.” Those are the opening words of the Miranda warning and if a police officer says them to you, it likely means you have just been arrested. Content Warning: sexual assault, child abuse, addiction, racism, and other heavy themes are discussed. Host Shawna Potter talks to Clementine Morrigan and Jay Lesoleil, the hosts of Fucking Cancelled (two L's because they're Canadian), a podcast that examines all things related to cancel culture in lefty/progressive circles. In this episode, Shawna aims to learn more about their critiques and what influenced them. They talk about real life experiences with cancel culture, the effects it has on victims of violence, trauma-responses, how to best support survivors of rape, sexual assault, and abuse, and so much more. If you're asking yourself, “What's the big deal, aren't call outs just a consequence of bad behavior?” you're not alone - and they have an answer ready. This episode does not cover every facet or nuance of responding to harm. It should be noted that most of the content centers on gender-based violence, and therefore might not sufficiently address racism and other forms of identity-based violence. There is no one right way to respond to your own abuse or assault. While public call-outs are one tool in the toolbox, the guests of this episode argue that it is an ineffective and overused one. Recently, I was talking with a friend and reflecting on how I managed to change some of my long-standing patterns of behavior and the methods for how that change process unfolds. This week's episode 198 of the Fragmented to Whole Podcast is about how to change your behavior after 50 years in the other direction! Support the show by becoming a Patreon member! In this episode of the Fragmented to Whole Podcast, I'm sharing some of the big ways I have changed my life over the years and how learning to pause became the framework for every other tool I got from recovery. The framework I share for changing your behavior includes:You have to believe theoretically that change is possible for humans and if you don't think it just yet, seek out people who have already done what you're looking to do and use them as inspiration. Start to entertain the idea that changing this behavior is something you can do. Think through situations you've been in where if you would have done the new behavior, things would have turned out differently. Continue to be committed to the behavior change. Understanding that you can stop and change directions is one of the secrets to living a life of contentment. You can learn how to stop doing the things that are not serving you, that are draining you, that are making you feel ashamed, unhappy, or unfulfilled. Be sure to tune in to all the episodes to receive tons of practical tips on living a more whole life and to hear even more about the points outlined above.Thank you for listening! No longer feel shame or awkwardness of expressing an emotion that is something other than happiness because being angry/sad/depressed/anxious or whatever is healthy & will help you heal from your experience & understand yourself better.Show Notes:When you're depressed or angry or really sad or any emotion that someone would label as far from happy, it can feel like you're only choice to release yourself from those emotions is to throw yourself into full on happiness or positivity. But it's FAKE happiness or positivity because you are forcing it, so it's not really going to work. And despite the fact that we know this may not solve the real problem, we STILL have people out here telling others to just ‘be happy' or ‘suck it up' or ‘you can't be sad/mad/however you're feeling because it's not going to help.' And THIS is where I needed to step in and make a podcast episode about how that is incorrect. When we avoid our emotions, we end up delaying necessary healing that would actually provide us with more perspective & understanding of who we are, what triggers us, going deeper on why we react the way we do & what would be the best ways for us to respond to situations that may draw out a lot of emotions. The biggest point is that we aren't taking the time to honor our emotions & accept that we have emotions for a reason, to express how we feel about what's happening around us. Why wouldn't we want to share those or cover those up with fake ones that don't accurately represent who we are?And before you get into a thought process of not wanting to be known as someone that gets angry or has depression or any emotion that is not happiness, if that is what you want, you want to be a robot. I promise you, there is NO ONE that is only feeling happy and positive all the time. And if they tell you they are only ever happy or content, they are lying. I will die on this hill. They are lying. Everyone experiences up emotions and down emotions and middle-of-the-pack emotions. They just don't want to tell you that because they haven't worked on that insecurity yet. And that's fine. We work on the things we believe are most important and it's our prerogative. But don't believe for a SECOND that there are people out there that are ONLY positive. It's a facade. So today I wanted to discuss some feelings that actually contribute to your personal healing journey that others may label as ‘bad' or ‘not right' or even ‘innappropriate.' My goal is you understand these feelings are perfectly healthy to experience & should be accepted without shame:Feeling uncomfortable around certain people and needing to end relationships.Feeling unsure and lost in your current season of life & looking for direction.Feeling anger or frustration or sadness or lonliness that feels all of a sudden.Feeling the need to be alone.Feeling worried or anxious about something others deem normal.Feeling sad when things are changing for the better.Feeling hurt or offended or disrespected even when others don't feel the same. Thanks for listening, downloading & sharing!! Life is not always filled with happy moments, but sometimes we desire to reclaim happiness to just make it through all the crap. I'm here to share some tips on how to create happiness during rough & tough times.Show Notes:Life can kind of really suck at times. It can be really rough & you just don't know how to make it through. And everyone around you is just telling you to be happy & push through & just suck it up. And while that advice might help the few select people that are able to ignore all negativity in their life, it's not gonna help the majority of us.Being happy can actually be hard. I talk a lot about leaning into gratitude when we find it difficult to be positive or see the positives in life because so many things are going wrong or just not the way you want it to, but I know that there are even times when that is difficult for me. You can acknowledge that you have many things to be grateful for in life, but you get stuck in the negativity parading through your mind that it takes a little more effort to find that happiness again. And this is not something you should feel shameful for, despite the fact that some people try to make you feel that way, it's perfectly acceptable. Especially if you haven't adopted positive coping mechanisms to handle negative experiences & things that can be overwhelming or even traumatic. If you struggle with knowing how to shift your mindset when you get caught up in negativity, then of course it's going to be hard for you to be happy when it feels like the world is burning down around you. There are several common reasons that we can struggle with happiness in life & I want to share those with you just so you're aware of what might be holding you back & preventing you from tapping into the joy:Your happiness is dependent on something you can't control. (this can be people or how much money you have or getting recognition in your life)You compare your life to others. You spend time with people who are overly negative. You are enduring things that don't make you happy. (friendships, jobs, activities)All these things & many more can be such huge happiness roadblocks in your life. But if we learn how to navigate the hard moments & seasons in life, we will have the ability to be happy whenever we choose, dependent on our effort to shift our mindset.Today I want to share with you 7 ways to be happy even when life is tough & sucks:Don't be too critical of yourself.Take moments to slow down & think. Learn something new. Widen your perspective & apply gratitude.Make a list of things you can actually change.Find something to look forward to each day. Help someone else. Daily threats to our finances, freedom, and relationships, people are living on edge and tensions are high. Outburst at home during family time slips more often and road rage is becoming common behavior. Tensions are high and with that comes heightened emotional responses. Leonard Mlodinow is an American physicist, screenplay writer, and a five time NY Times best selling author. He and Tom discuss the context of being emotional and understanding how feelings shape our thoughts and our actions from his latest book, Emotional, How Feeling Shape Our Thinking. Leonard reveals the importance of knowing your emotional tendencies, how to regulate your emotions and make conscious decisions for a better emotional response. If you've ever thought people were either emotional thinkers or rational, this conversation is going to open your mind to a much bigger picture.Check out Leonard Mlodinow's book, Emotional, How Feeling Shape Our Thinking: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B091PJ8BSJ/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0 SHOW NOTES:0:00 | Introduction to Leonard Mlodinow1:45 | Emotions and Rational Thought11:03 | Emotional Reactions19:25 | Emotional Northstar32:11 | Mind Body Connection to Emotion42:03 | Emotional Tendencies & Malleability 46:44 | Wanting Things Vs.
