Do you have a goal to climb a mountain but... your day to day looks more like watching tv from the couch?Listen, it turns out you can shift your personality to actually become the person who can reach these really awesome high goals we set for ourselves.Shannon Sauer-Zavala is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, and she works with people to actually shift their personalities away from anxiety and depression and toward their goals. And did you know those all the rage personality tests are not much more reliable than a Facebook poll? Seriously. Shannon tells us about the one that matters, the Big 5. It's basically the gist of the totality of human beings boiled down to 5 overarching traits.I know, I know, you're dying to know what they are. Bear with me because these words totally need publicist; neuroticism, extrovertism, agreeableness vs. antagonism, conscientiousness vs. disinhibition, and openness. These mumbo jumbo sciency words describe specific tendencies that make up personality and really guide what we are capable of doing.  And guess what? Personality is not static. Actually, Shannon says it gets better with age! Finally, a reason to look forward to the next birthday and stop all this anti-aging bull sh*t!!! Shannon and I had a great discussion about these 5 traits and what it takes to move the bar to reach those goals! Surprise, surprise, it has a lot to do with your thoughts! Which -  spoiler alert - aren't facts. They are just things you tell yourself. So if you start little by little telling yourself different stuff, you can actually change your behavior AND your personality.Don't be fooled and put into a box by personality tests or old habits. You can shift, change, and become whoever you want to be! How cool is that? What's Inside:How reliable are today's common personality tests? What are the Big 5?Can your personality really change!?What's holding you back from your goals and how to push past it.Finally we get some validation that we actually get BETTER with age, I mean as far as our personality goes. What personality shifts would you need to make to reach that next big goal? “Your call is very important to us.” That is just one of many phrases businesses use trying to convince us how customer-focused they are. Do these phrases work, or do they backfire? This episode begins with an exploration. Source: Michael Maslansky author of The Language Of Trust (https://amzn.to/3Wz2IQP). When you walk into a church, it affects you. You feel different than when you walk into a baseball stadium or a restaurant or office or a grocery store. The environment you are in right now affects your behavior your thoughts and your feelings. I am certain you have experienced this but likely never thought a lot about it. That is why Kevin Ervin Kelley is here. Kevin is an award-winning architect who designs stores and offices and other spaces and has studied how rooms and spaces impact people for better or worse. Kevin is author of the book Irreplaceable: How to Create Extraordinary Places that Bring People Together (https://amzn.to/3UALlwE). While you learn about the big historical events in school, history is filled with lesser known stories that will fascinate you. You are about to hear stories of the disastrous opening day at Disneyland; how Abraham Lincoln was only one of several murder targets the night he was shot; the weird marriage of AOL and Time-Warner and more. Here to tell those stories is Michael Farquhar. He is a former writer and editor at The Washington Post and author of several books including Bad Days in History: A Gleefully Grim Chronicle of Misfortune, Mayhem, and Misery for Every Day of the Year (https://amzn.to/3wjKCrF) and More Bad Days in History (https://amzn.to/3QE5q3V). “You have the right to remain silent.” Those are the opening words of the Miranda warning and if a police officer says them to you, it likely means you have just been arrested. Content Warning: sexual assault, child abuse, addiction, racism, and other heavy themes are discussed. Host Shawna Potter talks to Clementine Morrigan and Jay Lesoleil, the hosts of Fucking Cancelled (two L's because they're Canadian), a podcast that examines all things related to cancel culture in lefty/progressive circles. In this episode, Shawna aims to learn more about their critiques and what influenced them. They talk about real life experiences with cancel culture, the effects it has on victims of violence, trauma-responses, how to best support survivors of rape, sexual assault, and abuse, and so much more. If you're asking yourself, “What's the big deal, aren't call outs just a consequence of bad behavior?” you're not alone - and they have an answer ready. This episode does not cover every facet or nuance of responding to harm. It should be noted that most of the content centers on gender-based violence, and therefore might not sufficiently address racism and other forms of identity-based violence. There is no one right way to respond to your own abuse or assault. While public call-outs are one tool in the toolbox, the guests of this episode argue that it is an ineffective and overused one. If you had your fear in the back seat of your car as you were driving, what would you do? Would you let it take the wheel and drive you to whatever place it decides, when and how it decides, as you would have nothing to say about it? Or would you tell it to "buckle up!" and keep quiet in the back, as you call the shots and make all the best choices for you? It does make you question and wonder how you've made many of your decisions so far: were they fear-led or heart-led? A very powerful and insightful talk on anxiety, fear and behavior and how can you use your emotions to your advantage. The framework I share for changing your behavior includes:You have to believe theoretically that change is possible for humans and if you don't think it just yet, seek out people who have already done what you're looking to do and use them as inspiration. Start to entertain the idea that changing this behavior is something you can do. Think through situations you've been in where if you would have done the new behavior, things would have turned out differently. Continue to be committed to the behavior change. Understanding that you can stop and change directions is one of the secrets to living a life of contentment. You can learn how to stop doing the things that are not serving you, that are draining you, that are making you feel ashamed, unhappy, or unfulfilled. No longer feel shame or awkwardness of expressing an emotion that is something other than happiness because being angry/sad/depressed/anxious or whatever is healthy & will help you heal from your experience & understand yourself better.Show Notes:When you're depressed or angry or really sad or any emotion that someone would label as far from happy, it can feel like you're only choice to release yourself from those emotions is to throw yourself into full on happiness or positivity. But it's FAKE happiness or positivity because you are forcing it, so it's not really going to work. And despite the fact that we know this may not solve the real problem, we STILL have people out here telling others to just ‘be happy' or ‘suck it up' or ‘you can't be sad/mad/however you're feeling because it's not going to help.' And THIS is where I needed to step in and make a podcast episode about how that is incorrect. When we avoid our emotions, we end up delaying necessary healing that would actually provide us with more perspective & understanding of who we are, what triggers us, going deeper on why we react the way we do & what would be the best ways for us to respond to situations that may draw out a lot of emotions. The biggest point is that we aren't taking the time to honor our emotions & accept that we have emotions for a reason, to express how we feel about what's happening around us. Why wouldn't we want to share those or cover those up with fake ones that don't accurately represent who we are?And before you get into a thought process of not wanting to be known as someone that gets angry or has depression or any emotion that is not happiness, if that is what you want, you want to be a robot. I promise you, there is NO ONE that is only feeling happy and positive all the time. And if they tell you they are only ever happy or content, they are lying. I will die on this hill. They are lying. Everyone experiences up emotions and down emotions and middle-of-the-pack emotions. They just don't want to tell you that because they haven't worked on that insecurity yet. And that's fine. We work on the things we believe are most important and it's our prerogative. But don't believe for a SECOND that there are people out there that are ONLY positive. It's a facade. So today I wanted to discuss some feelings that actually contribute to your personal healing journey that others may label as ‘bad' or ‘not right' or even ‘innappropriate.' My goal is you understand these feelings are perfectly healthy to experience & should be accepted without shame:Feeling uncomfortable around certain people and needing to end relationships.Feeling unsure and lost in your current season of life & looking for direction.Feeling anger or frustration or sadness or lonliness that feels all of a sudden.Feeling the need to be alone.Feeling worried or anxious about something others deem normal.Feeling sad when things are changing for the better.Feeling hurt or offended or disrespected even when others don't feel the same. Thanks for listening, downloading & sharing!! Life is not always filled with happy moments, but sometimes we desire to reclaim happiness to just make it through all the crap. I'm here to share some tips on how to create happiness during rough & tough times.Show Notes:Life can kind of really suck at times. It can be really rough & you just don't know how to make it through. And everyone around you is just telling you to be happy & push through & just suck it up. And while that advice might help the few select people that are able to ignore all negativity in their life, it's not gonna help the majority of us.Being happy can actually be hard. I talk a lot about leaning into gratitude when we find it difficult to be positive or see the positives in life because so many things are going wrong or just not the way you want it to, but I know that there are even times when that is difficult for me. You can acknowledge that you have many things to be grateful for in life, but you get stuck in the negativity parading through your mind that it takes a little more effort to find that happiness again. And this is not something you should feel shameful for, despite the fact that some people try to make you feel that way, it's perfectly acceptable. Especially if you haven't adopted positive coping mechanisms to handle negative experiences & things that can be overwhelming or even traumatic. If you struggle with knowing how to shift your mindset when you get caught up in negativity, then of course it's going to be hard for you to be happy when it feels like the world is burning down around you. There are several common reasons that we can struggle with happiness in life & I want to share those with you just so you're aware of what might be holding you back & preventing you from tapping into the joy:Your happiness is dependent on something you can't control. (this can be people or how much money you have or getting recognition in your life)You compare your life to others. You spend time with people who are overly negative. You are enduring things that don't make you happy. (friendships, jobs, activities)All these things & many more can be such huge happiness roadblocks in your life. But if we learn how to navigate the hard moments & seasons in life, we will have the ability to be happy whenever we choose, dependent on our effort to shift our mindset.Today I want to share with you 7 ways to be happy even when life is tough & sucks:Don't be too critical of yourself.Take moments to slow down & think. Learn something new. Widen your perspective & apply gratitude.Make a list of things you can actually change.Find something to look forward to each day. Help someone else. Thank you again for listening & I hope this episode was helpful.Come visit me on my Instagram page @sabrinajoyperozzo.Anonymous survey for topic suggestions for the show:https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScqcg0URMsH61Evk_3SiSURBkNuk5aUZVo97H5nuLVB0q36Iw/viewform?usp=sf_linkHave any questions, comments, or feedback?  Send me an email at realpositivegirlpodcast@gmail.com or check out my website, www.sabrinajoy.com where you can listen to all my episodes, send me messages & sign up for my weekly newsletter https://www.sabrinajoy.com/newsletter!Join the NEW RealPositiveGirl Community group on Facebook!https://www.facebook.com/groups/realpositivegirlDonate to the Show: patreon.com/realpositivegirlSupport the show

How far have your excuses gotten you so far? I'm willing to bet absolutely nowhere.Let me share with you 5 tips on how to let go of excuses & achieve your goals, even if you're scared.Show Notes:I have wasted so much of my life living in fear. Being too scared to step out in faith & belief in myself and just try something that I'm passionate about. It was always something I knew I could do without too much pushback. I never had the guts to try what I am doing now, which is helping people with their emotional health through this podcast & through personalized coaching. But it is a journey, right? There are reasons it takes us longer to step up and do some things in comparison to others. And it takes time to learn new skills & be ready for that season of life you want to walk into, but this isn't the case all the time. And sometimes we blame not stepping into or attempting to do the things we want to do on not being ready. It's always something about needing to do this & that first before you can move onto the thing you really want to do. You create barriers for yourself on purpose because you are self-sabotaging. Check out episode 388 if you'd like to learn more on how to not engage in self-sabotage. And to be honest with you, waiting until you're ready is just an excuse. Especially if you're a perfectionist.I have had the idea of helping people through personalized mindset coaching for a while now. It's the reason I started the podcast. But even that took some time for me to go all in. I had to deal with fears of failure & judgment. But something in my snapped that I needed to just get started. So I did. And no regrets. Same with coaching. I spent over a year telling myself I'm going to do it, but I didn't. Again, fear of failure & judgment & not being taken seriously. But lucky for me, someone I had made friends with online reached out to me & encouraged me to get take the leap. And I did.And I know we won't always have those people in our lives to push us down the slide of life & unknown experiences, so we also need to be able to do it for ourselves. Excuses don't make you feel better. Excuses don't fulfill visions and dreams and goals. Waiting until tomorrow or Monday or next week/month/year will only allow you more time to syke yourself out & not do it at all. Then all you're left with is longing & hope that you'll one day take the first step. And hope is nice, but not as nice as action. Today I want to share with you 5 tips on how to let go of excuses:Stop Obsessing Over What Happened in the PastStop Comparing Yourself to OthersCreate a Goal Setting Plan with Tons of Tiny StepsStop Being a VictimExamine What Emotion the Excuse is MaskingThank you again for listening & I hope this episode was helpful.Come visit me on my Instagram page @sabrinajoyperozzo.Have any questions, comments or feedback?  Send me an email at realpositivegirlpodcast@gmail.com or check out my website, www.sabrinajoy.com where you can listen to all my episodes, send me messages & sign up for my bi-weekly newsletter https://www.sabrinajoy.com/newsletter!Join the NEW RealPositiveGirl Community group on Facebook!https://www.facebook.com/groups/realpositivegirlInfo on my 8 Week Coaching Program: Your Mindset Mattershttps://www.sabrinajoy.com/yourmindsetmattersSupport the show

Stop Speaking Negatively - Your Words Create Your Reality

Your attitude is everything. You believe it only affects you inside your mind & not even by much, but you're wrong. Your attitude, how you speak to yourself & out into the world creates the life you live in. There is a correlation between being negative & getting negative. Same with being positive. Let me give you some quick tips to turn that attitude around today.Show Notes:We think that our attitude only affects us, when it affects so many other things in our lives.Tony Robbins talks about how the words we say create life, create our reality & it's so true.If you don't believe me, take a moment to at least consider it.Ask yourself if you've been saying negative things to yourself or out loud for others to hear (or not) & answer whether you have been mostly seeing negative things in your life. And think about the last time you were being more positive or even just realistic. Didn't it seem like your circumstances were more manageable or even better? Your attitude, positive or negative, will determine so many things in your life that you may not have considered. The attitude you have at the beginning of something you know will be grueling & a lot of work will determine the outcome. It might all still come together in the end, but it could have been A LOT better if there wasn't so much negativity swirling around. Your attitude is also one of the few things you ALWAYS have control over in your life. You get to decide how you feel, how you act, and how you handle something tough. It's all you. And blaming someone else for how you feel will not make the pain go away. Shifting blame makes it seem like it's no longer your responsibility, but that's only a fallacy. The things you say create your reality. And I don't want you to think I'm suggesting you subscribe to toxic positivity, which is fake positivity. No, I want you to be fully aware of what you are saying & thinking as much as possible & check yourself when it's necessary so you don't live a life full of negativity & letdown. Please realize that it serves you best when you lean into the positive more than the negative. It isn't going to make the whole problem, struggle, and experience go away, but it's going to make it easier for you to get through. It's not a magic formula, but it is what will make the whole experience better. Maya Angelou said, “If you don't like something, change it. If you can't change it, change your attitude.”Here are 4 ways you can quickly shift your attitude from negative to something more positive:Recognize Your Negative Feelings & Thoughts See Your Struggles As Accepted Challenges Change Your Focus Ask Yourself, “Will this attitude actually make anything better?”Thank you again for listening & I hope this episode was helpful.Come visit me on my Instagram page @sabrinajoyperozzo.Have any questions, comments or feedback?  Send me an email at realpositivegirlpodcast@gmail.com or check out my website, www.sabrinajoy.com where you can listen to all my episodes, send me messages & sign up for my bi-weekly newsletter https://www.sabrinajoy.com/newsletter!Join the NEW RealPositiveGirl Community group on Facebook!https://www.facebook.com/groups/realpositivegirlRSVP to the upcoming Live Masterclass: Becoming More Resilienthttps://fb.me/e/nBpjgVdtQSupport the show

Mental strength can be described as your amount of resilience & confidence. But if you're unsure how to become stronger mentally, I have 10 tips on how to work towards a stronger mind & become even more capable of overcoming the struggles that come your way.Show Notes:I always thought mental strength was tough to work on, but it was because I was a people pleaser. And being a people pleaser meant I had to do what I could to put everyone else first & not make myself a priority ever. This meant that I allowed my mindset to be continually crushed by those I thought I needed to serve to be accepted, to be liked, to be recognized. I had to extract myself from that lifestyle, that behavior before I even had a chance to become stronger. You don't get stronger when you allow others to basically step on you & hold you down. And as most of you know, all I talk about around here is emotions and mindset and how to ensure you are not held captive by your emotions & how better to manage those emotions that will assist you in getting your desired outcomes in life & continue on your journey to becoming your best self. And it's what many of you are here for, which is great because I can deliver on that. And talking about different topics individually can help you understand those topics better, but sometimes it's nice to have a quick list of things to work on to either get a jumpstart on your emotional wellness work or just to have a condensed reminder of what's important to work on, in general. And that is what I plan to provide for you today. A quick list of things for you to do to work on your mental strength. But first, let's define what mental strength is: Being mentally strong means you are able to deal with the stressors, challenges & problems that come your way. This also means you have the ability to cope with any negative emotions that come with those struggles & respond the best way you can, despite the circumstances.Sometimes referred to as mental toughness, it can also be boiled down to the amount of resilience & confidence you have to figure whatever out & keep moving forward. As always, please note that becoming stronger mentally is not an overnight project. It doesn't happen right away & takes time, like most things. Please be patient with yourself as you develop this skill.Today I want to share with you 10 Ways to Work On Becoming Stronger Mentally:Learn to Set Goals That Are Realistic & ManageableWork on Managing AnxietyDon't Camp Out in the Past Learn to Respond Rather Than React Set Limits/Boundaries for Yourself Indulge in Positive Activities & Things that Bring You Joy Embrace Changes in Your Life Be Responsible for Your Actions & Behaviors Work On Being More Patient Celebrate Other People's Success Thank you again for listening & I hope this episode was helpful.Come visit me on my Instagram page @sabrinajoyperozzo to say hi or on Clubhouse @sabrinajperozzo to chat!Have any questions, comments or feedback?  Send me an email at realpositivegirlpodcast@gmail.com or check out my website, www.sabrinajoy.com where you can listen to all my episodes, send me messages & sign up for my weekly newsletter!Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/sabrinajoy)

People pleasing hides who you really are.  You end up living an unauthentic life with limited emotional freedom & happiness because you lack the understanding of how important it is to put yourself first & help others second. Come hear 5 tips on how to stop being a people pleaser.Show Notes:The biggest thing I've learned about people pleasing is that it hid who I really was. Which is bad, but it's even worse if you have been practicing this behavior for most of your life. You lose any sort of real identity & end up only being who people want & need you to be. That is the case for me. I have been a people pleaser most of my life because it's how I kept myself safe from judgment, criticism, physical harm & being shut out. I just wanted to be important to someone and the more I got that feeling by doing everything for everyone else, the more I wanted that feeling. I was addicted to people pleasing. And there is a ton of emotional damage that goes into this & the way I was treated that contributed to me adopting this behavior. I know this is similar for others, as well. And while it might feel empowering to blame those people in our lives that contributed to this behavior (via manipulation or forced expectations), the actual empowering thing to do is to wean yourself off of this behavior & start putting yourself first. This would include incorporating things like personal boundaries, living authentically, becoming okay with others not liking or approving of you, accepting that you can't control everything & many others. Many people might view caring for others & being everything they need as a noble & rewarding act. But the nobility & rewarding aspects of this run out if it's all you do. If you don't take the time to take care of yourself, you won't be able to recharge yourself to keep helping others. Are you a people pleaser? If you are unsure of whether this is a mindset & way of like you are struggling with, let me share with you some characteristics of a people pleaser:You constantly say yes, even when you'd rather say noYou become a chameleon of the people you hang aroundYou accept blame, even when it's not your fault (this also leads to constant apologies)You rely on validation from others to determine your worth & approvalYou're overwhelmed by others feelingsYou avoid conflict (difficult people)You're indecisiveYou compromise your own values to make others happyI want to share with you some tips on how to stop being a people pleaser. These tips will help over time, it's not a quick fix.  Start slowly implementing these things & you'll start shifting into caring more about your needs first, then accessing the amount of emotional resources you have left to help others.Start Being Honest with YourselfYou Have to Say ‘No' When You Can't or Don't Want to Remind Yourself You Can't Control Everything & EveryoneLearn to Sit With the Discomfort of Others Opinions Remind Yourself Self-Worth is Based on How You Value Yourself Despite What Others SayThank you again for listening & I hope this episode was helpful.Come visit me on my Instagram page @sabrinajoyperozzo to say hi or on Clubhouse @sabrinajperozzo to chat!Have any questions, comments or feedback?  Send me an email at realpositivegirlpodcast@gmail.com or check out my website, www.sabrinajoy.com where you can listen to all my episodes, send me messages & sign up for my weekly newsletter!Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/sabrinajoy)

Vulnerability is a strength, not a weakness. And becoming vulnerable doesn't have to happen overnight. You can take it day-by-day & slowly implement it into your life. Let me share with you 5 ways to increase your vulnerability.Show Notes:One of my goals in life is to convince as many people as possible that being vulnerable is a good thing. It's helpful to you because you are allowing yourself to fully feel your response to what's going on around you through your emotions. You are also allowing yourself to be seen for who you really are, which can help with self-acceptance & self-confidence. You being vulnerable can also help others because you're setting an example that it's okay to be this way, to be real.To expand on what it means to be vulnerable, I heard it described in one of the best ways ever: vulnerability is a sacrifice of comfort. This couldn't be more true. When you are truly vulnerable, you are not hiding in your comforts. You are not always taking the easy road. You are not avoiding the hard things in life for the sake of not wanting to fail or not being liked as much. You are stepping outside your comfort zone & taking chances & allowing yourself to be caught in the line of fire with others that may not agree with your point of view or the way you live life. You are opening yourself up to rejection or acceptance. It can be hard at times, but it's worth it because of the true freedom you feel exposing yourself emotionally.Being vulnerable can be scary, but as always, I encourage you to take it day-by-day in your approach of incorporating it into your life. Here are 5 ways you can increase vulnerability in your life:Understand that you are worthy of being accepted as you are.Start expressing your wants & needs to others.Ask for help when you need it.Become comfortable with both acceptance & rejection.Be honest about how you feel to others & yourselfThank you again for listening & I hope this episode was helpful.Come visit me on my Instagram page @sabrinajoyperozzo to say hi or on Clubhouse @sabrinajperozzo to chat!Have any questions, comments or feedback?  Send me an email at realpositivegirlpodcast@gmail.com!Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/sabrinajoy)

We cannot settle for staying stuck where we are because of perceived & unreal threats & dangers that are based on past mistakes & failures. We need to stop letting fear hold us hostage.Show Notes:Fear is an illness. It's a phrase I hear while watching the second season of The Witcher. A secondary character was sharing with the main character that she is afraid of what she could do to others if out of control. The main character told her that fear is an illness & if you catch it and leave it untreated, it will consume you. The other character asked how to cure it & he responded that the best way to cure it is to face it. I found it very profound because it's true. You have to face your fears if you have any hope of overcoming these thingsFear is a funny thing. It's important in times of crisis & trouble, when you need to be more aware of danger & keeping yourself safe. You become more aware of what's happening around you, leading you to make sound decisions. But when it's fear that is based on non-existent problems & dangers, it's not your friend. It's actually working against you.It can be said that this type of fear will lower your awareness & cause you to become hyper focused on perceived problems, real or not. You consciously narrow your options & hold yourself back because of an unknown threat. I see it as building something up bigger than it should be. And it could be based on something that has happened in the past, but that's still not a real reason, but more of an excuse with more fear piled on top.Outside of being in a tragic event that is life-threatening, fear does nothing positive for us.Here is a quick list of bad things fear does to us:Fear creates roadblocksFear paralyzes usFear robs us of peace & takes away our joyFear directs our thoughts & determines our actionsI read a wonderful Japanese proverb: “Fear is only as deep as the mind allows.”  We are in charge of what we let in our minds, we are in charge of what stays. You get to choose! But we get so wrapped up in the fear that we believe we don't get a choice. We are allowing ourselves to be held prisoner to our fears. And maybe someone else is to blame, as well, because they planted the seed. But as much as you can't allow fear to run your life, you can't be a victim, either. Again, you will get nowhere & end up wasting time. Ask yourself, “What will you gain in blaming someone else without putting in the work to make a change?” You might be afraid to ask yourself that question because you know the answer isn't what you want. Here are some tips on how to face your fears & eventually overcome:Determine the Source of Your FearAccept Your Fears Embrace Your Own Power Choose Perspective, Not PanicShift from a Fixed Mindset to a Growth MindsetThank you again for listening & I hope this episode was helpful.Come visit me on my Instagram page @sabrinajoyperozzo to say hi or on Clubhouse @sabrinajperozzo to chat!Have any questions, comments or feedback?  Send me an email at realpositivegirlpodcast@gmail.com!Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/sabrinajoy)
