Book Club #111 - The Unfinished Harauld Hughes - Richard talks to the extraordinary Richard Ayoade about his incredible multi-book releases about writer Harauld Hughes (including books of his plays, films and prose) and his equally brilliant “The Fairy Tale Fan Club” kids book. They chat about the questions children ask about the stories they are told and why it's fun to attempt to answer them, how to get Wes Anderson to narrate your audiobook (be Richard Ayoade and ask him) and why bad characters appeal to children. Plus what it's like to be in the brain of Richard Ayoade, why he wanted to create the character of Harold Hughes, why he put himself in the book, the joy of a book that it takes a little while to tune into, another incredible audiobook and how to create parody that occasionally transcends humour, but where you come to care for the people you are mocking. How has he been allowed to do this? He definitely should have been allowed to do it, but it's still amazing that he's done it and that it's available for you to read! There is also a chance to win all four of the limited edition Harauld Hughes books - rare unsigned copies too!Or buy the books here (quickly) - https://uk.bookshop.org/p/books/the-book-that-no-one-wanted-to-read-richard-ayoade/7098935?ean=9781529500752https://uk.bookshop.org/p/books/the-unfinished-harauld-hughes-richard-ayoade/7688891?ean=9780571377893https://www.faber.co.uk/product/9780571393107-the-models-trilogy/https://www.faber.co.uk/product/9780571393084-plays-prose-pieces-poetry/https://www.faber.co.uk/product/9780571393060-four-films/See RHLSTP recorded live - https://richardherring.com/rhlstp Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/rhlstp. Kicking off season 4 of the IBM Blockchain Pulse podcast, Matt Hooper is welcoming on his first guest, Harold Hughes!   A lot has changed since season 3 of IBM Blockchain Pulse. We are now in a time of tremendous uncertainty, moving into a future that will look vastly different than anything we’ve previously imagined. And in the midst of so much change, hope can sometimes feel scarce — which is why Matt Hooper is thrilled to present today’s conversation with Harold Hughes, founder and CEO of Bandwagon, an analytics and identity management company that uses blockchain to help event venues and entertainers create a more personalized fan experience while eliminating ticket fraud. Harold’s journey as a founder is awe-inspiring (and not just because it led him to the blockchain industry)! It’s inspiring because he has built a thriving business built on real customer need, iterating and evolving over the past 6 years, joining an accelerator only when he thought it could help him scale — and he’s done nearly all of this from his hometown in Greenville, South Carolina! Harold has been thoughtful with each step of his journey and it is one you won’t want to miss out on hearing all about.   With our future being shaped in part by leaders like Harold, how can one not be hopeful about the future?   Key Takeaways: [:00] An excerpt from today’s episode. [:27] About today’s episode with Harold Hughes. [2:27] Matt Hooper welcomes listeners to the first episode of season 4! [2:54] Matt welcomes Harold to the show. [12:37] As a first-time founder, where did Harold gain the confidence that he has in trusting in himself and in others that he brought aboard early on? [17:27] What is a fan analytics company to Harold? And how did he know that he had to expand beyond a fan analytics company early on in forming his business? [19:56] When they first started out, what data was available with regards to fan analytics and fan identities? How were they able to collect it? [22:24] Harold about raising external capital in 2016, a few years into running his business after going fulltime. [23:33] What was Harold’s introduction to blockchain? Today's guest is Harold Hughes!  We talk college football, bourbon, technology, leadership, and more.  It was great to have Harold come on the podcast because I really wanted to learn about how he has led his team through the pandemic.  Harold takes a very people focused leadership style like several of the folks I've had the chance to chat with since the pandemic started.  We also talked about innovation, project management, and the release of the new Ideal Seat product.  Check out my friends at: Booking Protect.  www.bookingprotect.com Kieran and Sophie are doing some great work with the website and the social media feeds. They have been posting a lot of stuff to help us keep the industry alive in our minds, to keep us focused on our relationships, and to rebuild our businesses after the lockdown. Bookmark the blog because there will be some really great stuff coming in the next few months as we continue to work towards being able to reopen our venues, stadiums, and events.  Check out Einar and Martin and the Activity Stream team's efforts with the We Will Recover project.  www.wewillrecover.live As Martin mentioned to me at the start of the pandemic, it was important to help get people focused on recovery and controlling the things that they can control.  So there are classes, webinars, blogs, and all kinds of content that will help you get back on your feet.  A new thing I'm working on is the #ivotedconcerts project with a former podcast guest, Lawrence Peryer, and a great woman, Emily White.  Visit www.ivotedconcerts.com and make sure you are registered. Vote and send a selfie to the address given and you'll be able to see a virtual concert with a bunch of really great artists.  And, if you can support the effort in some way, please do!  Finally, get my Friday newsletter: Talking Tickets.  5 stories with analysis and action items. Bio Harold Hughes (@OneBandwagonFan) is the founder & CEO of Bandwagon – an identity infrastructure company that helps companies and organizations transparently manage, aggregate, and store valuable consumer data. A rising star in sports tech, Harold has had his ideas validated as a graduate (and now mentor) of the Founder Institute Greenville chapter; graduate of Capital Factory – Austin, one of the inaugural companies in Google for Startups Black Founders Exchange Program, and most recently the IBM Blockchain Accelerator. In his hometown community, he serves as the founder and Managing Director of Brickyard Innovation Lab: an entrepreneur ecosystem for early-stage startups and emerging growth companies. He is also a Co-Director of the Founder Institute Greenville chapter, a startup incubator, and a member of the Greenville Chamber of Commerce. A man of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Harold is actively involved in the community participating on the Board of Directors for Rebuild Upstate and Visit Greenville. As a strong believer in mentorship, he makes time to speak with youth and his peers about his journey to entrepreneurship and how he has found success along the way. Harold Hughes is a graduate of Clemson University where he received Bachelors degrees in both Economics (B.A) and Political Science (B.A.).  As a “Triple Tiger”, he also completed his MBA at Clemson, before pursuing a graduate certificate in Innovation & Entrepreneurship at Stanford University. Resources Aura Bandwagon Fan Club News Roundup       Tech giants curtail, end sale of facial recognition to police IBM and Microsoft announced plans last week to end the sale of surveillance technology to police departments, with IBM stopping all research, development and production of such systems indefinitely, and Microsoft saying it plans to stop the practice until Congress passes legislation. Amazon currently only has plans to pause the sale of its Rekognition software to police for one year, but it too has called for new legislation. The decisions came after years of advocacy reached a boiling point amidst reports that police have been using facial recognition during worldwide protests, in support of Black Lives, after the killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police just over two weeks ago. However, IBM, Microsoft and Amazon are just 3 of the companies selling facial recognition technology to police. Also last week, the American Civil Liberties Union and several other organizations sued Clearview AI, a supplier of facial recognition technology to police departments, for scanning Illinois’ residents’ faces, without their consent, in violation of an Illinois law preventing nonconsensual fingerprinting and face scans, The New York Times reported. The Hill reports Massachusetts Senator Ed Markey also called on Clearview to conduct an independent assessment of whether police have been using their technology during the protests, to which Clearview responded that it only helps police after crimes have already been committed. And Vice surveyed 43 facial recognition companies whether they too will refuse to work with police. According to Vice, most didn’t respond to the inquiry—you can find a link to the list of those companies in the show notes. You’ll also want to read Geoffrey Fowler’s Washington Post piece discussing efforts by other companies, including lesser-known companies like NEC and Idemia to thwart lawmakers’ efforts to rein in law enforcement’s use of facial recognition to spy on U.S. citizens. Zuckerberg still being difficult about curbing misinformation Despite leading lawmakers’ and activists’ calls on Facebook to improve how it flags misinformation, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is still being difficult. But at the same time he claims he’s “disgusted” by President Trump’s content, The Hill reported last week. The debate with Facebook has continued for years, with the company condescending to and patronizing a handful of civil rights groups making repeated calls for the company to better moderate hate speech. The term “hate speech”, of course, being one Fox News like to wrap in quotes as if it’s not a real thing, never mind that centuries of newspapers’, broadcast stations’, the FCC’s, and social media companies’ enabling of bigots and misogynists suggest otherwise. Sure. Facebook will take down hundreds of accounts managed by anti-racist Skinheads. But when Trump threatens bodily injury posting “when the looting starts, the shooting starts”, lumping peaceful Black Lives Matter protesters into a single category of “looters” … That’s no problem. On Wednesday, the House Homeland Security Committee wrote Zuckerberg, again, urging him to curb Trump’s “dangerous” posts. Zuckerberg’s response? Writing a letter in reply to 270 concerned scientists he and his wife Priscilla Chan fund through their Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, admitting Trump’s posts constituted misinformation, that they were incendiary, that they were “deeply shaken and disgusted” by them. But, alas, “Having more voices at the table that represent a diversity of perspectives, viewpoints, and lived experiences isn’t just a good way to help solve the world’s biggest problems and challenges – it is the only way.” “The only way”. Those words are important because they negate diverse perspectives, viewpoints, and lived experiences. They urge authoritarianism. Uber waives fees for black-owned restaurants The Hill reported that Uber Eats, after creating a list of black-owned businesses, has waived fees for customers ordering from black-owned restaurants. Uber’s ride-sharing unit also announced discounts for passengers going to black-owned establishments. The company said the deals will continue through until the end of the year. Jeff Bezos ‘happy to lose’ racist customers Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos took to Instagram last week to drag a racist customer named Dave who complained about Amazon’s homepage statement in support of Black Lives Matter. The customer sent an email deriding the world’s wealthiest person saying he’d laugh watching the company’s profits decline as a result of the statement. Bezos posted the email, redacting the customer’s name, saying he’s happy to lose such customers. Amazon was up 24 points on Monday June 8th’s market close, the first market close after Bezos’s post, to 2,524.06 per share. Police investigate disruptions of police radios during protests Someone took advantage of police officers’ unencrypted frequencies during protests. In one intrusion, hackers played Tay Zonday’s YouTube viral hit “Chocolate Rain” over police radios. Authorities are investigating incidents in Minnesota, Illinois and Texas. Some departments have switched over to encrypted frequencies. Twitter makes Juneteenth a holiday Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey announced last week that the company will now recognize Juneteenth as a company holiday every June 19th. Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, the date African Americans in Galveston, Texas first learned of their emancipation from Union General Gordon Granger, who delivered the news nine weeks following Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s surrender at Appomattox Court Courthouse, and some two-and-a-half years after President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. YouTube announces $100 million for black creators YouTube announced last week that it would be investing $100 million to amplify the voices of black creators. YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki made the announcement Thursday, in a post in which she also reported the company removed some 100,000 hateful videos and 100 million such comments in the second quarter.

content: Mar 7, 2017 · podcast: Mar 14, 2020 Audio (MP3): 20170307 - We'd pray as a group Some of you may have heard part of this already. It needed an expounding. So back when I was a teenager and drinking and being out of control and kinda sorta wanting to be sober, my dad suggested I read the We Agnostics (PDF) chapter from the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous. I read it because he asked me to but I was resistant to the whole Higher Power thing. Not that I didn't believe in God or the destruction of man by alcohol -- I certainly did. My mom and I read The Man from Ida Grove by Harold Hughes way back before I went berserk. I knew the story and how alcoholism could play out. My mom even helped me memorize the Serenity and Lord's Prayer during that era. Also when I was a pre-berserk kid I'd go off to church with the neighborhood friends and after the sermons and the whatnots, we'd pray as a group. I'd mouth the words but never felt the power and the love of God as they seemed to. Those friends had peace when they were young, a confidence in their place in the world that I was obviously lacking. Most of my childhood life I was deathly afraid I was going to hell. I saw God to be an angry Santa, all too eager to kick and cast you down below because you weren't living up to expectations. I didn't even know what those expectations were let alone what I was supposed to even be just doing. Other than being a "good" christian like those neighborhood friends. Anyways... My dad talked to me about the whole electricity part and while it made sense and I could understand the logic and reasoning, I hadn't completely surrendered, wasn't willing to give up control. I was too close minded. I wasn't even on Step One. Still berserk. I never got into a bathtub with a shotgun like Hughes' did but on my darkest day I was there emotionally just the same. But once I was "driven to AA" as the 12x12 puts it, the notion of a Higher Power came pretty much right away. I didn't care about We Agnostics' logic or science or explanations. I was at the point where if somebody told me to "stand on my head in the corner to stay sober" then okay. No more intellectual justifications as to why God exists. No more Wright brothers or electrical currents. I wanted to be sober because everything I was doing not only wasn't working, IT WAS HORRIBLE. And not only did I have the willingness to do anything to stay sober but after the meetings and the whatnots, when we'd pray as group I felt the power of God. I needed God and God was there. Even though I felt batshit crazy, I had touched that elusive notion of peace and confidence that everything was going to be okay. It was important for me to be with my kin for the God thing to work, too. I didn't feel bonds with those neighbor kids at church because we played on different levels, probably in different space-time dimensions. The people in the meetings though, they were my spiritual brothers and sisters. Anyways 2... to wrap this up my point is: my newly sober beliefs in God were all spiritual and not rational. Still are. My brain is good for math, not finding God. #alcoholism #advancedsoul #diariespodcast gogomom · Mar 7, 2017 at 3:43 pm This is the only part of the Big Book I hated. As an atheist it was most unhelpful. To summarize, it basically says that it’s OK I don’t believe in God, because at some point, I will. OK, never going to happen. I do have a higher power, but it isn’t a deity of any kind. This and the antiquated language is why people who are not in AA believe that it is a religious program. $m.wand.ajax_click=true;$m.wand.lightswitch=true; tcr! · Mar 7, 2017 at 3:46 pm Totally with ya… I’d take a hacksaw, some glue, and a magic marker to various parts of the Big Book if they’d let me. $m.wand.ajax_click=true;$m.wand.lightswitch=true; devokar · Mar 7, 2017 at 4:17 pm Belief in a higher power of your own choosing is what it states in the steps. I love the serenity prayer - I just leave out the “God” part at the beginning. I also don’t mind the Lords Prayer that closes most of the meetings I attend. The Tao of Sports Podcast – The Definitive Sports, Marketing, Business Industry News Podcast

Harold Hughes has more than a compelling elevator pitch, he has a complex idea that may change the secondary ticket market. Hughes has founded Bandwagon, LLC, which specifically targets ways for fans to resell their tickets to other fans of the same team, eliminating the fears that the rivals may pick up seats in the best areas of the stadium. Hughes explains how he came up with the Bandwagon process, as well as learned to code in order to create a short-hand with his programming staff. Hughes has conquered a lot of the learning curve required to sell tickets on the secondary market, and looks to capitalize on an under-utilized segmentation of the marketplace. Twitter: @TheBarcodeMan
