The Minnesota Hindu community is gearing up for the annual Holi festival starting March 25. Holi marks the arrival of spring — you may recognize it from iconic photos of streets — and people covered in red, green, and yellow paint. Holi is often called “The Festival of Colors” and the date changes depending on the Hindu lunar calendar. The Hindu Society of Minnesota is partnering with Midtown Global Market in Minneapolis to throw a big Holi festival on Saturday, and Shajive Jeganathan the president of the Hindu Society, joined MPR News host Cathy Wurzer to talk about it.

We are so often consumed by news of the horrors of war, that we despair of the darkness and we lose perspective! Kris commenced Sunday's address -"A festival of Light" at Shady Grove by telling a story from the Indian Upanishads. Our Unitarian Festival of Light is inspired today by the Diwali - the Hindu Festival of Lights. Light has long been a metaphor for that deeper part of ourselves - call it the soul...the spirit, some divine spark within ourselves - a light - "the lamp within" -emanating goodness and divinity. Today is our Unitarian celebration of the light and goodness, expressed in the day-to-day acts of kindness and empathy. So let's not dwell on the darkness but join with us by celebrating this light within and surrounding us. Our Diwali! Kris leaves us with a challenge: "How do you bear that light to the people around you?" He concludes: "Let us be the light in the darkness!"

Song of a Dream   Hello, this is Jana, and I'm here with a poem from India, called ‘Song of a Dream',  in honour of Diwali, the Hindu Festival of lights.     Diwali celebrates the victory of light over darkness, and good over evil.  For Indians, Diwali is a huge holiday, in October or November. It usually involves a lot of fireworks lighting up the sky. The celebrations last for five days, though the third day, which  marks Lakshmi is the most important. Lakshmi is the Hindu goddess of wealth, fortune, prosperity and beauty .      My family, who come from India, are in fact Christian. But in honour of my ancestral country, I'm going to read an Indian poem, ‘Song of a Dream', by Sarojini Naidu. I hope it will light up your heart.    ONCE in the dream of a night I stood Lone in the light of a magical wood, Soul-deep in visions that poppy-like sprang; And spirits of Truth were the birds that sang, And spirits of Love were the stars that glowed, And spirits of Peace were the streams that flowed In that magical wood in the land of sleep. Lone in the light of that magical grove, I felt the stars of the spirits of Love Gather and gleam round my delicate youth, And I heard the song of the spirits of Truth; To quench my longing I bent me low By the streams of the spirits of Peace that flow In that magical wood in the land of sleep. And that was ‘Song of a Dream', a charming poem by the Indian Poetess, Sarojini Naidu, whom Mahatma Gandhi called the "Indian Nightingale".     I do hope that you enjoyed it. Sentebale’s programmes not only ensure their basic needs – love, security and an education – are being met, but also provides them with the educational and psychosocial support they deserve. This is the first visit to the UK by a Nepali Prime Minister in 19 years.  The Duke has previously met KP Sharma Oli, on his first official visit to Nepal in March 2016, a country he had always longed to visit.  At the time, Nepal was recovering from a major earthquake - rural villages had been torn apart leaving many families displaced, with heritage sites in Kathmandu severely damaged. Despite this tragedy, The Duke was moved by the remarkable spirit, resilience and warmth of the Nepalese, as seen in the photos from his visit.  The Duke explored Nepal’s stunning natural beauty, trekking through a National Park, experiencing the Hindu Festival of Colour in the Himalayan village of Okhari and staying with a local family in Leorani village.  During the visit, HRH also met The Royal Gurkha Rifles at the British Gurkha Camp in Pokhara, whom are a unique unit of soldiers in the British Army recruited from Nepal. The Duke has a particularly close bond to The Gurkha’s, having served with The 1st Battalion in Afghanistan in 2007/2008.  The Gurkha’s have taken part in operations in Kosovo, Bosnia, East Timor, Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Australia and Iraq and share a 203 year relationship with the UK. At the end of his 2016 visit, The Duke joined Team Rubicon volunteers to help a remote village whose community had been destroyed in the earthquake. @Teamrubiconuk unites the skills and expertise of military veterans with first responders to rapidly deploy emergency response teams in the aftermath of natural disasters. Tihar is one of my favorite festivals to see in Nepal. Each day of the festival either an animal, a Goddess or a brother/sister relationship are honored. The biggest night, Lakshmi Puja, is the most important night of the festival when houses and businesses are cleaned, decorated with Rangoli art(flower, colored sand) and candles. Prayers are also performed in hopes that the Goddess of Wealth, Lakshmi, will pay a visit and bless your family or business with a prosperous year.                                While walking around the streets of Thamel and the rest of Kathmandu you'll notice many people, especially women, are dressed  in their best outfits, many purchased to celebrate this special night.Thamel, the tourist section of town is one of the best places to hangout and watch the festivities. With the highest concentrations of shops, restaurants and businesses it’s one of the liveliest parts of Kathmandu during the festival with impromptu dancing, singing and traditional gatherings.India's version of the Hindu Festival of Lights, Diwali, will seem like a much more robust celebration with a multitude of fireworks lighting the sky and echoing through the streets, and elaborate light and sign displays in front of jewellry shops,  especially in places like Jaipur. I enjoy both celebrations but I have an iffinity for the charm of Tihar, with the emphasis on dancing and  singing in the streets and the more earthy candle lit alleys of Thamel and Kathmandu.In this episode of Far East Adventure Travel Podcast, highlights from the latest Tihar Festival in Kathmandu, Nepal.
